    I wish i saw this before my first trip to PH. Now I know with taxi's always use the App Grab to get a safe driver and fare, never give kids money (we fed them McDo but still, better safe than sorry), and to never follow taxi drivers. One time, a group of men told us to get into their car because they were a taxi service but they weren't. A little yelling by me got us out of a bad situation

    • @TheSavvyExpat
      @TheSavvyExpat  2 года назад +11

      Yikes, good thing you guys avoided that. My family only uses Grab. It's way safer and definitely less sketchy. And I'd say feeding them food is without a doubt better than giving them money because w/ money, you never know where that's going to 💯

    Very informative! Lots of scams I've not heard about. What's kept me safe won't promote finding new social relationships but that's the way it goes. I simply ignore attractive and unsolicited options that become available to me from people I don't know, and some I do know. I think of the process as a competitive game, which is quite entertaining. Rule of thumb to live by: Believe nothing you hear and half you see.

    There was a lady beggar in Dumaguete, she had a small baby in her arms she approached me and asked me for money because she was hungry, I told her I'll buy her food and not give her money, she said no she wanted money I walked away, had a foreigner friend who told me he had a hamburger he just bought, a beggar approached him and asked for money, my friend gave him the hamburger but no money as he walked away he turned and actually saw the guy throw the hamburger away, be careful with panhandlers its a syndicate that controls them, even the blind are placed in the streets and panhandle by these syndicates, the Philippines is the worst country in Asia when it cones to honesty.

Feeling guilty? Ha! Sorry, I don't see much of that here when it comes to taking handouts. True story, I was waiting for my friends outside with my daughter in a parking place next to a mall entrance. A scammer came up to me and told me he had 5 kids and no money, that his wife was ill etc, etc. When I told him I have no money because I'm supporting my wife's family he went over to talk to his friend, and they laughed together like they hadn't a problem in the world. I also noticed he had a nice I-phone. Didn't really strike me as someone in desperate need.

    I was feeling so confident about my future plans to move to the Philippines until I watched this. I would of fallen for half of those. Also, to any Filipino watching this I want to point out the obvious. Not all tourists are rich. Speaking English doesn’t equal money. I’m a single mother, I will be saving for years to stay in the the Philippines for 6 months to a year. I will be renting a modest house or apartment, I won’t be staying in fancy hotels or going to expensive restaurants and I certainly won’t be buying luxury goods. That said moving to the Philippines with my son is my dream, and I can’t wait to experience your beautiful country and culture.

    I am a Filipino and I can say most of this guy said are true. I am not saying all Filipinos are like that, but some can be. I remember when I was 8 years old, I travelled from Abroad with my sister to the Philippines. When me and my sister arrived to the Airport in the Philippines. We went to the collection area to get our luggages. As soon as we got our stuffs, we were looking for a trolley, so we can put our luggage's in. As soon as we found where the trolleys are. There was 2 people who worked there standing where the trolleys are... and I asked to give me a trolley for our luggage. The man said... it's 100 pesos for a trolley... I was a kid and did not think nor know about scams that time. So I gave the guy 100 pesos and he gave me the trolley.
    When my relative picked us up in the airport. I told my relative about it. He told me that I should have never gave money! because trolleys in the airport are free for travellers to use! I realised to the point that those 2 people took advantage of us because we were just innocent kids. I got scam. But I learned my lesson. Lesson learn... when someone is charging you for trolley. Never pay them!! tell them to f*ck off and give you the trolley lol. But seriously just be careful.

First, I think I mentioned I’m married to a Filipina for 27 years so I’ve been educated on the PI 🇵🇭 for a long time. We’re both vaccinated and boosted. The vaccine is a matter of choice and we support that. However, people must abide by the rules, if a host country says stay at home all ye unvaccinated then so be it. Unfortunately the U.S. is not one of those countries that mandates or controls the masses and unvaccinated. Although I believe the U.S. should crack down, that’s my opinion. I have no problem with what the PI 🇵🇭 is doing. Our hope is to get there soon as we can. Keep up the good work Evan and remember that everyone isn’t going to agree with you and that’s okay! Try before you buy. If you are able explore other potential countries, both in SE Asia and elsewhere. Keep your options open. Even in the Philippines, not all places are the same. Thanks again for good advice and tips. However, I understand the bullet scam at the airport NAIA was ended by the current Duterte presidency. Child beggars, yes I've encountered them even in Makati City, but usually in the less desirable, safe and less developed Poblacion barangay, home to the red light district centred around P. Burgos Street. But not around CBD Ayala triangle, Greenbelt Malls area, or high end pockets, like Rockwell Center and Century City. Also I'm lucky never to have seen them in BGC or Mc Kinley Hill .. for me always feels safe in these latter areas even later at night in darkness. But there again these areas are some of the most expensive, westernised, or internationalised pockets I suppose in the entire Philippines. But great advice to consider if visiting or thinking of living in the Philippines.

    Mine was a taxi cab driver. He did not use the meter, even though we asked him to. We then had an agreed upon price, which he changed and increased, as he claimed our luggage was heavy and weighing down his vehicle. He then stated, that since we had less than an hour to get to the airport, he doesn't normally go fast, so he increased the price again. An utter scumbag, but he knew the desperation of use missing our flight, so he took advantage of it.

    • @alanguages
      @alanguages 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks. Back then cell phone cameras were not common and we were informed to always use the meter. We had no idea a driver would agree, then keep it shut off when we were already on the way and change the price twice. He also wasn't driving fast either. He just came up with an excuse to increase the price.@@somerandomstoic

She was in uniform, told me she is airport staff, show id and asked where I go. Showed me the tariff of travel cost to locatiom of each city. She called someone taxi driver maybe and charge me like 40+usd for 15min. So Be careful, Pls always go to taxi booth and ask for the taxi or take a grab taxi

    Honestly the only scam i had to deal with when i went back home to the philippines for the first time in 10 years were the airport taxis lmao. The bitch tried to charge me for 3000 pesos, So i went outside NAIA and called uber and the estimate was only 250-500 pesos. The ride only cost me around 300 pesos so I gave the driver 200 pesos tip since he got me to my destination quite fast plus a great conversation. If you give me honest price then you will get honest tips

    How about family scams? No one ever talks about life in the Philipppines from a Filipino expats POV. So why don’t you do one from the viewpoint of a Filipino expat with relatives who still live in the Philippines, and return to the Philippines to visit, or to live/retire back home?

    If you want to become an expat learn one word and be able to use that word before traveling to the Philippines, that word is NO! You ARE NOT obligated to pay for nobody's food, rent, clothes, electric bill, beer etc. If you meet a Filipina and she wants you to buy this and that or pay for her families bills, dump her, block her and move on. I've been with my girl here going on 5 years, never once has she asked for money, and she works! There are some good girls over here but it may take time to find that one so don't be in such a rush. Remember, learn to say NO over here or you may wind up on the streets, homeless and broke....not a good place to be in a foreign country!

      I will just add to that...
      1. If she asks why after you said no just say, "I never explain my reasons". Give her a reason and you have given her grounds for arguing.
      2. Say no but always say kindly and respectfully. No need to say with anger.
