The ladies found his music to be so romantic back in the day we called him Johnny Mattress .
From what I've read, Mathis hasn't smoked in decades. He's in his mid 80s now, vocals change with age. Actually his vocals have only started to change within the past 15 years, which is remarkable given that he's been singing all his life. I think he sounds great for his age.

Johnny Mathis was huge back in the mid- to late 1950s! What a phenomenal voice! He recorded a few Christmas albums and you can hear several of his Christmas songs on the radio every December. But he mostly covered holiday songs that were already hits for others and didn't originate any of his own. Two of his bigger pop hits were "Chances Are" and "Wonderful, Wonderful."
He's still very popular. His success was instantaneous and his following is huge. He still tours at age 84, always to sold out venues. He is the 3rd most popular recording artist ever, behind Elvis and Sinatra. Chances are and Misty are his signature songs, among many others.
And he had #1 duet hit with Deniece Williams in 1970s too (Too much, too little, too late)

Find a clip of his called 'Johnny One Note'. He holds a single note, without stopping, while a female chorus sings around him, for about two minutes!
"West Side Story" is a famous hit Broadway musical, that was written by Arthur Laurents, with music provided by American classical music conductor Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It came out in 1957, and was later made into a film in 1961. It is fascinating that Johnny Mathis decided to perform a song from this musical, "Maria". I guess that he liked the challenge of performing the song with its changing vocal ranges set up for him by Bernstein and Sondheim.

@@BrosReact0151 Yes, Johnny Mathis is still alive as of this writing. Several years ago, Johnny Mathis performed his 50th Anniversary Concert on PBS, and the concert is available on DVD.

"The Christmas Song" was recorded by Nat "King" Cole. "The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" was recorded by Andy Williams.
Johnny Mathis recorded The Most Wonderful Time of the Year as well.
It's from the film West side story and the Christmas song is when a child is born never been a fan of his gotta unusual voice though 😏

He’s the most underrated vocalist ever recorded. He was Elvis Presley’s favorite ballad singer -superior to Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis , Tony Bennet. Sadly, he passed away at age 66 ( born in 1932) but his legacy of over 20 LPs and over 140 pop songs will live on forever. I’m going to offer you initially 2 songs to react to:
The first is “ once upon a time” unique and recognizable and his 4 octave vocal range reaches the celestial angelic realm. “ And “ if you love me( really love me)” and this is the song at the end ( last refrain) where John sustains the longest PHRASE in lp recorded HISTORY ( 13 words and 30 seconds)
Here are 2 reasons how John developed such an amazing Voice-especially in the high range. His mom was a professional concert violinist and when John was 6 or 7 years old she would have him sing to the tune of the violin.
The second reason, John was a deep sea swimmer and invented and patented an Aqualung and used it to set a world endurance record of over 2 hours underwater!!
