    Jamie, the next time you want to pull one of those stubborn stakes that's stuck in the ground (5:08), just try the following: move the stake continuously in a circular direction, forcing it outward as you go, making the hole ever larger. You'll notice the stake will rotate in the opposite direction until it just pops out. Much easier and faster!

      @ThePlockets 9 месяцев назад +2

      I would probably want to do something like that as well, but it is probably unnecessary as long as those 8x8's are rated for marine or below grade. Considering the absolute nightmare it would be to repair/replace those posts, I would go for the overkill anyway, just for peace of mind.

  • @ronsimpson143
    @ronsimpson143 9 месяцев назад +5

    You don't need to screw each stake to the lever. Screw two blocks onto the lever, just a bit further apart than the width of the stake. Then, place the stake between the blocks, and the friction from lifting the lever will increase as you lift because the angle of attack on the blocks shifts to pinch it. Kind of how a t-post puller works.

    • @DrTubeman
      @DrTubeman 9 месяцев назад

      Yup, this way you've mentioned saves you heaps of time to screwing and unscrewing each stake/peg if there is a lot of bracing stakes/pegs to remove. You can also use this same two-block method on a lever to remove concrete boxing pegs/stakes as well as most other types of stakes/pegs from the ground.

    • @ronsimpson143
      @ronsimpson143 9 месяцев назад +1

      My dad and I were pulling t-posts and didn't want to go buy a t-post puller. We made one from a t-post and some scrap metal. It worked. Then after about the tenth one (pulling out of hard Oklahoma clay) I got the tractor and attached a chain to the bucket. Hydraulics beat muscle every time. @@DrTubeman

    • @DrTubeman
      @DrTubeman 9 месяцев назад

      @@ronsimpson143 Yup, you certainly can't beat the power of hydraulics, especially if you've got an excavator with a bucket grab attachment.
      I've been operating excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, and other heavy machinery for decades.
      One of the most handy machines for pulling out fencing posts is a 20-30 ton excavator with a bucket grab attachment fitted, you can rip out massive strainer posts 50cm-20inchs that had had locking blocks wired and nailed to the bottom of the post with ease even if the posts were in rocky hard ground with rocks ramed around the base of the posts.
      The key was to grab and lock tightly into the post halfway down between a bucket tooth and a tong of the grab and hoist a post out using the lifting boom of the excavator, extra stubborn posts you use a combination of the bucket crowd dipper arm and boom to force a post out of the ground.

    • @terencemerritt

    Love your content. I learn something new from you guys every time I watch. Only recommendation - seal the end grain and all ground-contact wood on those 8x8 post before you backfill. I like to use a wide flash tape like 9” G tape. That stuff is easy to apply, no dry time like other dip or paint-on sealers and will create an impenetrable barrier against moisture, rot, mold, etc. I’ve torn out 10 year old pressure treated deck post in relatively low moisture ground found checking and rot that greatly compromised the posts. I’m just not a big fan of any ground contact for “treated” lumber. Too many variables…

Especially seen as though those rotting and sheeting off would be the most catastrophic scenerio? Wrap them in DPM then seal the top with Lexel would much be better than touching a moister source no?

    The deck is amazing, but it's kind of like a hallway. It'd be better if there was a lounging area somewhere on the deck, with a table and chairs or something. Like picture at 20:18 if the deck bumped out say 8 feet to the right where the center of the house bumps out, and the roof kept going above it. You'd have a pretty epic 3 season dining room in the trees. Maybe hang a light feature from the roof and make it a screen porch. OK done making work for you now, it's going to be amazing either way.

Soil and bugs and fungus are different all over, of course, but out here in coastal Cali we had PT fence posts turn to powder in 8 years or so. I've seen plastic 1/2 barrels put around 'em on the uphill side to hold up the dirt, and maybe gravel run-off beds to channel the water away?

    Sir Jamie, standard support is base on the span. On horizontal, the clear span you devide it to three. The first 3rd is when you put the bracket. On vertical on the other hand, devide it 4. The first quadrant from the top is your mark. You're welcome. 😊

    There is a brace table on framing squares.
    Also, for any 45⁰ brace, just take the leg length times 1.414 (which is the sq.rt. of 2).
    I'm surprised that, with all your experience, you don't use this method.

    • @ayushpandey8223
      @ayushpandey8223 9 месяцев назад +5

      I think the problem is that there might be small variations in the leg lengths and then the braces might not end up exactly 45 degrees. Yes it is more work but it gives the most uniform appearence.

    A tool I use often to align the joist with the rim board is a 600lb squeeze clamp. If you angle the clamp just enough, you can raise or lower your joist, depending on what needs to be done.

    Hey Guys,
    Code for deck post braces if you're doing a kneebrace is min 1/3rd the height of the post from the top, 45-60* angle. 2018 NCRBC Appendix M, Figure AM109.1(2)

      There’s also an amendment to am109 that states two HDP galvanized screws can be used given they have a diameter >= .270. Those grks do not meet the requirement. Simpsons are the only ones I know that do.

    Well built deck and the only thing I would have done differently was to add 12" cardboard tubes under the 6x6's to raise the completely out of the ground for no bottom post rot over time.

      Not only did I keep mine out of ground but I soaked them in preservative and termite killer for a week to the bottom 2 Ft. of the posts.

    Installing steel cables in a horizontal X pattern immediately below the floor joists would greatly increase lateral rigidity and stability. Use a turnbuckle in each run of cable to pre-tension them.

      The decking when installed will pretty much take care of any movement issues if there is any

    If my memory is correct for the bracing, 3 ft by 3 ft is a 45* triangle, so 3 times the square root of 2 equals the hypotenuse.
    So the length should be 4.242 ft or 50.9 inches.

    It would be great if you could talk about your 4 day work week from business owner's perspective. How do you make it work? Pros & cons? Do the guys have to have weekend jobs and did you ever struggle with worker retention? If you're comfortable getting into it, do you pay above average hourly wages to make up for reduced hours? And anything else you'd like to share about it.
    I'm currently working Monday to Friday, 9'ish hours a day on a fixed salary, for a mid sized civil/infrastructure general contractor. I don't have the energy for much more than sitting on the couch after workdays and half of the weekend is spent recuperating. And the years seem to be flying by. Somebody asked me the other day what I'd do if I won the lottery and I said "build spec houses". Now I'm giving it some serious thought.
