What Witchcraft Does Hozier Put In His Songs?!

  • Wow. ‪@hozier‬ has just released some new music and I'm going to react to the lead single called "Eat Your Young". Hozier seems to have attracted a lesbian cult following, despite being a 6'5 straight white Irish man...what is it about his songwriting and lyricism that women are falling for? What is this magic? What are they seeing? Let's find out.
Here is a link to Eat Your Young: • Hozier - Eat Your Youn...

One of my friends said that the reason Hozier is so loved by women is that he writes about them the way another woman would. Which I think is very noticeable. The way hozier describes love and admiration is so ethereal and non objectifying, for lack of a better word

I do like the way he describes women, but I’d argue that men descriptions of women as goddesses and angels to be worshipped or as threatening forces of nature are quite common and dehumanize the object of adoration by definition. But art has no moral obligation to not do so, it’s all about the way it’s used.

When I first heard his songs, it gave me hope for the future of music. When I found out how young he was at the time, it gave me hope for his generation. When I heard what he was saying through his music, it gave me hope for mankind.

The album recordings weren’t supposed to be the only things to care about.
You’re in a room with a limited amount of songs & time. No one is there almost all day.
In contrast, the mediocre performers can’t write or sing anywhere near his level but they got praise & special treatment for how loud they are in recordings & how they dress or act. An image of how the listener wanted them to be in their imagination.
Folks bought Swift because their kids thought she was their babysitter but she’ll never be a music hero or good role model. The corporations bought her awards but she can’t reach Hozier’s attractiveness & musicianship no matter how much they flood the media with her. Money & lies don’t buy class.
Hozier didn’t have a stunt like the pop trash performers. He just sang like he normally did, no matter who cared.

Interesting and v talented guy, Hosier. Those chromatic bits do indeed grab the earholes, lovely. I think the Enyo vibe gets enhanced a bit also by that huge reverb. Great! Nice one Justin. 🎶🌟👍

Interesting to hear Ennio Morriconne references. I'll have to take a listen to see if I can pick that up too. And I have to offer that setting aside the obvious staggering gift of his voice, Andrew Hozier-Byrne is a compositional genius. He doesn't pay attention to youtube comments so I feel fine writing this (as he'd deny it immediately) but it's absolutely true. He plays with music like how writers utilize words and painters build layers of colour & light. So much of his skill is visceral instinct as well as flow and he naturally takes everything that has touched him (musical, historical, spiritual, artistic, natural or socialpolitical) and it all gets channeled through him, interpreted and is brought out the other side to the work that we hear. Picture a prism taking in all the lightwaves and sending out something beautiful (or bleakly treacherous & dark but still achingly beautiful). That's Hozier.
There's also the Irish upbringing & influence, and their artistic greats have no trouble going dark & finding the humour in there somewhere as well. I've also seen that his gigantic heart compels him to issue work that is going to go out into the world and it's going to have some kind of intent to care for people. From a few things he's said I believe it's written (some of it) not just for himself, but partially with his fellow man in mind, and the idea of asking: can this embolden the oppressed, or give comfort to those suffering. Can this give joy, a lift, or a feeling of being understood or camaraderie. He writes joyfully but also carefully I believe with the idea that "music is a historical document. And if I can create something that, long after I'm gone, might possibly give someone a sliver of the same joy I've felt from listening to some artists, then I won't feel compelled to come back and haunt anybody. I'll be a happy ghost."

I’ve just bought tickets to see Hosier today , so this was well timed for me. Very good episode. Ennio Morricone …….. where would you start, such a massive body of work. It may not be rockknkroll but I would love to hear your take on The Ecstasy of Gold - L’Estasi Dell’oro. I can already hear your improvisation. Obviously there’s no lyrics in this theme tune but if you listen, there’s definitely vocal parts that sound like you provided.😊Can’t wait for the PTL tour tickets to come on sale ❤

That 'semi-tone shift' (I'm not technically knowledgable) to me, evokes sickness. Like it stands out when you first hear it, and the whole song despite it's meaning sounds amazing, and bit musically I feel shows that the narrator is sick. The gluttony and everything they're singing about, it's because their gluttony is a sickness. It's wrong. So it sounds amazing, but those few little shifts remind you that there's something off or wrong about the whole situation.
