- Hozier is back with a new single called "Francesca". I reviewed him already on this channel, let's see if this song is as good as the last. What do you think? Honestly? He is praised by his fans a lot but is his music really as good as they say it is. I want YOU to tell me.
You can watch the video for Hozier's song Francesca here: • Hozier - Francesca (Of...

Hozier stopped me in the street a couple of weeks ago when I was walking my dog to tell me he was 'a mighty little fella' So I guess he's officially Hozier approved!
That’s well cool!
How did it feel to get stopped by a celebrity? I imagine not many people get that experience!
classic hozier
Is it good to be hozier approved ? If so why ? Is he breeding dogs ?
i am way to envious of you haha
What is it about Hozier that people love?
EVERYTHING.
The man is a fucking phenomenon.
💯
YES
This!
What gets me about Hozier is not only the level of vocal control he has, but the tastefulness and creativity with which he employs it. He takes a *lot* of care with his phrasing and articulation, but is flexible enough that every performance of the same song feels distinct.
This thoughtfulness extends to his writing style as well. You always get the sense that the final product is a perfect realization of the musical vision underlying it, which reflects a high degree of compositional fluency and resourcefulness. It's the same sense of confidence and purpose you get from something by Pink Floyd or Beethoven - every edge is sharp, every facet is polished, everything's exactly where it's supposed to be.
No way can anyone say this dude is over rated!!! Its like insulting Jesus!!😂❤
Well said.
Yes
Very well said.❤❤
My favourite hozier lyric is "If I was born as a blackthorn tree, I'd wanna be felled by you, held by you, fuel the pyre of your enemies"
For those of you who saw me write "feel the pyre" not "fuel the pyre", no you didn't 🤍
me too. from NFWMB ❤
I love this one too❤️ amazing song and amazing lyrics
Same!! My absolute favorite.
I also love: "If there was anyone to ever get through this life with their heart still intact, they didn't do it right ."
it's fuel the pyre of your enemies
@@HaphetS I did mean fuel I typed wrong lol, fixing that
I recently got into Hozier and I'm kicking myself. I thought all his songs would be like his breakout song which was played to death...but his songwriting is literal poetry. So special.
I get you, but also, because Take me to Church has been played so much I feel like we don't really listen to it like it should be listened to (the fact that Hozier recorded it in his attic and it shows doesn't help with that). My favorite rendition of that song is not even from Hozier, it's the Cover by Eva Noblezada, you should search for it and give it a listen, it had opened my ears to the actual marvel of the song that I haven't been able to appreciate before because I heard it so many times.
Put me back in it, BEAT DROP.... Goosebumps.
He is so good at writing of love that transcends death... Beyond that he MASTERFULLY accompanies it with gorgeous music to emote the sentiment appropriately.
Its awe inspiring.
Id say hes undeerated. Not over rated. His poetry is brilliant and his voice is absolutely beautiful
Hozier is so exceptionally consistent from studio to live settings, you'll sometimes find videos out there of him playing his songs in tiny, generally shitty venues and inexplicably they sound as good as the recording. All of that to say - he's quite good, yeah.
I'm one of these really lucky people who sees Hozier around where i live. Wicklow. It's profoundly beautiful with the beach and hills on your doorstep. Hozier is one of these Irish artists who genuinely comes from a family of real craftspeople and musicians.
I watched his recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music and no matter how much i try to dismiss him as a hippie vegan for students etc, I cant. Because he is extremely impressive when interviewed, very humble but confident - unbelievably knowledgable on music and literature (although claims he doesnt read, some stuff just sticks) he is aware of his own talent - and not actually fake. I think he is a formidable artist and Take me to Church is a masterpiece and a takedown of the Catholic church and a fierce advocacy of LGBT rights etc. All the good things. Hozier is a legend.
Audio engineer here. The best trick for controlling that tasteful reverb is known as the 'Abbey Road' technique where you basically filter out everything below around 600Hz (at a 12dB slope) and above around 6kHz (adjust to taste) on its way to the reverb. That way you get a really nice mid-range tail that doesn't at all accentuate the fizzy stuff and also helps with not 'muddying' up your mix with all the low end crap invading the verb. Resist overusing compression; rather automate volume or clip gain first and then compress where necessary / desired. 👍
Am I the only one getting turned on
Hoizer is a demi god of the forest who emerges from his hibernation occasionally in a cozy jumper to bless us with his voice
Enjoyed this, Justin. Just to say he doesn’t call himself “Hozeeay” - he’s Irish (like me), he says “Hozee-er. Cheers!
I love this 😂
I just discovered his new album Unreal Unearth and everything about it is phenomenal, from the chords to the lyrics, the symbolism, the raw emotion translated to beautiful poetry
His work is so well thought and polished, I'm literally breathing this album and I'm in shambles
And yet it's not something everybody's taking about, so if anything I'd say he's very underrated
Underrated. What people love about him is his realness, his writing, his vocal delivery, the depth and variation in the music and phrasing. It's real art.
"...Frère Jacques the shit out of it..." Amazing. Love Hozier. I agree he is certainly a voice (and songwriter) of our generation. Not unlike Dylan, he is an extraordinary poet with a truly unique and memorable vocal quality. Thanks for another excellent video!
Dylan wishes he could be so good.
Hey Justin, long timeviewer/listener. Love your work.
Just fyi, us Irish call him Hose-eee-err not with a french pronunciation. I'm shocked Jenny has not corrected you. You can pronounce it however you wish of course but I just thought you would like to know how we shout at him down the local 😂 p.s. can't wait for my lovely yellow jhra tshirt to arrive
In my opinion, a lot of singers to me can be vocally talented but have not much heart or soul in their singing, which I believe is much more important and when when you get a mix of both incredible talent and soul those am the singers I love the most, Hozier is one of them.
he aint no taylor swift, that piece of ...
I wish I could tell which Key he’s singing in. Since I don’t have a trained ear and cannot sing, I always sing in the Key of “D(elusion)”.
He's singing in D major, I think
I ❤ Hozier so much. his songs affect me so much - like Jeff Buckley did a long time ago
Same!!!!! He’s this generations Jeff Buckley for sure.
I always group them together too! Such beautiful music and powerful yet sensitive voices.
His voice is undeniably gorgeous, but I'm still blown away from hearing/seeing 'Rock and Roll Deserves to Die'. I commented that I wanted to scream 'Holy FU€K' and you could hear it across the pond. But turns out your across the states, since I'm on the East Coast. I loved the song so much and the cheeky video was bloody brilliant. YOUR voice is just unbelievable and reminds me so much of Freddy Mercury. I hate that I just recently discovered you, but I had some addiction issues when The Darkness made it big. I wasn’t listening to new music because I preferred Janis Joplin, Queen, Metallica, The Doors, Hendrix, Prince, Tina Turner, GNR, AC/DC, etc. However, The Darkness checks off all the boxes for me and I'm officially a huge ❤ fan. I'm totally enamored with your voice and talent. I was familiar with 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love,' and the video brought me pure delight. It reminded me of being a teenager and watching MTV videos. It was fantastic. Cheers and enjoy California.
The theme tune was definitely in the key of cockney street urchin
He has an incredible voice. Beautiful control and power. He really can sing anything. The world doesn't want a new Van Morrison ie Market place. What a pity. He is rare in a world of auto tune cabaret "stars" and dancing monkeys. Quality artist.
Nice shirt and have had the opportunity to spend a night there, happy daze 🥴 x
Rare? There were 3 of him at The Shady Lady open mic night on Monday.
He’s voice and lyrics are gorgeous and he’s gorgeous as well. He’s Underrated as fuck
Quite frankly, to me, he's so gorgeous - a god of a man (not unlike you), I wouldn't care if he was pounding out "Row,Row, Row Your Boat" on a ukulele! I'd still think the same. He is an excellent, jazz musician and vocalist, in my opinion.
Hozier is a beautiful romantic and intellectual and amazing musician!
It's men like this that keeps some old folks alive.
I do have to agree with you on this.
He is a very handsome man!
And with the voice it's a plus!
Agreed!
we are delusional but thats not why he's so good
I think that fantastic chord in your theme song (the one with the tritone) has me in some kind of trance where I have to watch all of your videos.
I really like him, he's got depth.
Great stuff Justin as always! Due to your wonderful voice and great sense of relative pitch, your Acapela intro and outro themes were squarely within Em. (I suspect muscle memory in your vocal folds also played a part in this). Your final "again" at the end of the outro was closer to an Eb. My guess is that's because you did a bit of spoken-word between the final "rides" and "again", and also because the siren outside your hotel (understandably) put you off! (the siren was an Ab, btw). Anyway great work, thanks for introducing this Old Fart to a lotta cool contemporary stuff, and as we say here Downunda": "I like the cut of your Gib" (whatever the F*%# that means!)
First impression: could be a lovely earworm. Nice 80s/90s soft rock vibe. But with deeper lyrics.
seeing him live a few weeks ago was insane. Hes a Generational talent
Come on Justin, do a review of Blood Upon The Snow! It’s fkn INCREDIBLE!!!
I don't know if you already made a react to De Selby parts I and II, and 'All things end'.. they are just amazing! some of his songs, like 'Movement' and 'Eat your young' have such incredible videos!! It's like he builds his songs already thinking of their videos.. and the videos are just as poetic as the songs, they look freaking amazing together!! And he seems to me to be such a gentle man, a sweet person.. it's like he's got a good heart.
There’s a Cranberries, Dolores O’Riordan, vocal styling in the bouncy passion. A big fat Yes to affordable housing in LA 👍
Sirens in a big city... I live in such a small place, if a siren went off here, the whole village would go into a standstill, and all phones in every house would call all the others at the same time 😆
Oh my gosh I cant believe my comment was quoted on here, thank you! Also, its Welter with a hard W, not a V :) Love your channel, and love that youre continuing to cover Hozier!
Good song writing so I feel like hozier is underrated
Great songwriter, great lyricist, and a great singer, with great instrumentals happening in the background so he’s got all the essentials
Hey didnt you get accidentally interviewed once by a news crew who had no idea who you were on your doorstep? Would love to see a reaction video of that ❤
Thanks for the Paolo Nutini shout out. I remember when he 'disappeared'. Never forgot about him. 'Iron Sky' still makes me cry.
What Hozier does is pure art
I love him seems when he sings it comes from his soul. Seems harder to find these days. Thank you for your videos
Thank you for this video, I love Hozier, almost as much as I love you!
Thats the first song from him that i actually heard his irish accent throughout the song
And isn’t it just beautiful 👊
Actually, you’re still doing the theme in E minor, even without the guitar!
Nope. I hear it in an exotic E Major. Period.
@@ludvig5597 relax Beethoven
@@wolfreyet Nope. I hear it in an exotic E Major. Period.
His music is just as good if not better then advertised. So many amazing things about his music
The timing of that horn, comedy gold!
Justin makes very good RUclips. His music is a bit above my level. It's like Chopin too me. I recognise the talent, hard work and genius behind it but it's a bit to much for me. But listen to his knowledge and experience is a good thing in my life. I'm glad he's doing this.
He's singing a bitt more in a traditional Irish accent.
This song takes me back to 1994 when I was traveling to mars and falling in love.
Genuine thanks for that reverb/compression comment Justin - am going to have to try that on a mix thats been eluding me. Legend!
It's in the same key, you've memorized 'E'! You could use that to achieve relative pitch which I believe you discussed with Rick Beato! I'm using exclamation points!
Hey Justin..here’s a friendly mix tip from some bloke on the interweb 😮💩 if ur getting too much sibilance in your vocal reverb or delay maybe try using a high pass filter (may be built into the reverb or use an eq) to cut out the frequencies where the sibilance lies usually around 5k. This will set the effect further back and stop it distracting from the main vocal track. Compressing the reverb Ive found can bring out the sibilance more as it doesn’t remove any frequencies it just brings up the lower volume content and squishes the loud especially with heavier compression and them pesky Sssssss can get piercing. But hey you probably already know this…but maybe not. Love and tea cakes xx
4:41 That's what's doggin' me with this one... all the oowaaiiieee almost like "Check It Out" from that comedy show... but more elegant, of course. Still the same basic sound, at heart, though.
6:24 that thought had crossed my mind too
He was born on our birthday march 🎉. 17 th. Oh us Pisces. Sooo emotional depth and feeling , sometimes too much
I love JHRA, but maybe because Hozier is my favorite, I would like to say that one song doesn't lead one down the Hozier rabbit hole. Or at least it didn't me. I was first snagged by that gorgeous voice. It's a lovely and powerful instrument, clear and strong, without relying on it's beauty entirely. There's character and nuance, and most importantly, heart there. Then I let the songs play until I was pushed down toward Wonderland by the music. I love a hook and there isn't a Hozier song that hasn't played in a loop in my brain. Plus, it's unlike any other music I've heard. There's blues, yes, but also a love of gospel, folk, pop, and chorale music (and why not with a voice that can actually handle that kind of range). There's also something I assume is Irish. That variation in tone that I hear in Delores O'Riordan and Sinead O'Connor. Then the lyrics got me. Because I was listening again and again, the words dug in and there was so much to consider I found myself searching them online and studying them like the poetry they are. Lastly, once I was familiar with all the songs (and I mean all because in the times when Hozier put us in the desert, there were gritty videos of him as a 20 year old to mull over), I could appreciate the range of songs and the unifying philosophy behind them. For all the beautiful wording, there is an underlying rawness and authenticity that feels intimate. This is an artist who really gives his gift, and I find myself deeply appreciative rather than simply entertained. I've been to two shows and they are so much about the music. Hozier live is better than his studio recordings. His band shares his perfectionism and soul and he seems such a genuinely lovely human on top of it. Thank you.
I think the intro was em and outro was f sharp... anyways, awesome video as always! Enjoy your trip in the USA man!
You're doing a show in L.A. soon! Yayyyy! I just say the tour schedule. I'm so happy!😊
When and where? I haven’t found any links for tickets.
I've always preferred the term "refrain" because it is what it says. "Chorus" implies something grander with multiple voices, and we don't always get multiple voices. But I'm pretty sure the jury is out and the terminology is set in stone by culture and I won't get my way.
I need to investigate further. Late to the party on this one, but he keeps cropping up on my radar. So, I thought the theme was in the usual key at the start, and up a semitone at the end. 😎
Justin is still here?!!!!!! Is he performing here or just visiting? It’s just exciting that he’s so near lol.
LA looks good on you, J! Another good one. Thanks!
I year later, he has number 1 in usa uk Australia and Ireland
Justin Hawkins, you're a legend and I love you and love what you do here, but you did NOT just call Hozier letting his beautiful County Wicklow accent through ENGLISH... You're better than this 😭😭
One of the few artist these days that can actually sing.. 💯 My favorite artist.
Hozier is always hope through anything you counter in life. Periods. I lost my brother, my best friend at age 43 but what If I actually came to let him listen to this song. It's a song for the desperates. And for the ones who are still living. And for the souls as well. Sorry Justin, but you got it all wrong. We all have one god no matter where we're from or what we believe in. His best appreciated song was "Enjoy the Silence" by DM, a band we both love. And Hozier stood up for LGBT people, non religious but spiritual people, making a hommage to Nina Simone. What in the world is overrated about him? Maybe you shouldn't have done that in Los Angeles btw. Away from the noise would be better, mate.
We must worship this MAN!
Wow Justin, you're a liar. You didn't change the key at all. You masterfully pitched the theme tune to Em just like the original, possibly from your magnificently gifted, pitch perfect head. Then you masterfully descended down a semitone for the outro as to resolve and conclude the piece. What a beautiful modulation my friend, A++ indeed...
Thank goodness, thought I was losing my mind!
Compressing post reverb does give a lovely swell when you really drive it
Can’t wait to see you blokes play the Wiltern in the fall.
I love His Sole, a kindred one.
Justin I just bought tickets to see you guys play in San Francisco! 😊
Justin, Did you get to meet Andrew Hozier at the record store or any place else in Los Angeles since you were/are both in California at the same time? 😊
Justin, you crack me up! I just feel like you are playing master piss taker on this video and the subtlety is master level!
The intro is perfectly in key 🤣
Like him 😊 I've never noticed the accent in his singing before either
That's a totally Irish accent.
i just love the way he talks about women
Yay! 🦋
still in Em you old pro
No, it was in G Major!
I have been in that room, just not with him. Just with Robert Downey Jnr. It’s the same room the fight scene in Sherlock Holmes was filmed in. The tarred yarn store at the historic dockyard Chatham.
Hozier is my fav fae bog man
*Dear Justin* why have I never seen you review the band *GHOST* ??? I bet that you will love this band, reminds me of the darkness tbh, kinda old fashioned heavy rock sound with melodic vocals, just released a EP of four great covers (inc Tina Turner) *PLEASE REVIEW GHOST* 👻👻👻👻👻
He has done more than 1 video on Ghost already 🙂
There’s at least 2 of them as I think Ghost was the first artist he covered a second time.
Love you!
I didn't realize how much people disliked Hozier. I think he is beautiful, poetic and has an incredibly impressive voice.
Why did I think that was Jared Leto in the thumbnail
Is G# an accurate estimate for the key of the theme?
I guessed G
Paul McCartney played (and still plays) a Höfner bass, not a Vox. Bill Wyman sometimes played a Vox though.
Frere jacqued the shit out of it 🤣
hozier is perfect
Yeah I'll take a stab Justin..key of E? Great show as usual, thanks man.
hozier is some lad for one lad
09:20 😂😂😂
My bet is A# for the intro and F for the outro, as it also stands for...10:08 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Its' flat one semitone???🎵 And I'm talking about the fire engine
Nice watch, Justin
I'm am going with A# for the intro a capella
"I'm going to do the theme tune (......) this isn't the original the original key, perhaps you can tell me what key it is" -Justin, before proceeding to sing the theme tune in the correct key
Early USA tour???❤
I needed to wash my car but had no equipment... But for my birthday I got a hose yay!
Who is opening for you in Detroit? Might I suggest Detroit Punk legends The Strains?
His lyrics are that good often times I’m thinking Wtf is he on about but when you look into em very clever stuff
This song/video is good in an Imagine Dragons kind of way.
Not jealous in the slightest and a very apt shirt too😂
