I always took the "sleep to the freezing" in a darker sense. When you get hypothermia, one of the symptoms is sleepiness, but falling asleep is how you die in the intense cold. So the girl in this song can be like a sanctuary/respite, but even when she's bringing him "peace", she's killing him.
“He hit me and it felt like a kiss” is a line from a song written by Carole King and Hozier said he actually wrote this song with that particular line in mind
@@MPREGCOOKING No I didn’t. Read again before putting words in my mouth. A disguise means a trickery, fraud or even dishonesty, FYI. It is therefore not a love song. If you don’t believe me, believe how the artist (who downright wrote the song) is horrified every time people propose to that song 😂
@@aja6647 For Christ's sake, dude. Do you have any reading comprehension? You. Literally. Said. It. Yourself. It's about ABUSIVE LOVE. It's still love at the end of the day, my man. I will reiterate the fact that you CAN love your abuser. I've heard of people using this song as a wedding song and it always deeply concerns me, because this song 1000% is about DV. Just goes to show the importance of looking more into lyrics when choosing a song.
extra scary knowing that the music video has DV victims in it and actively is bringing awareness. like how can someone look this song up for their wedding and not know what they are doing?
Thank you so much for reacting to Hozier, it saddens me he’s such an underrated artist when he’s one of the absolutely most talented people out there. I met him once after his concert and he was the sweetest and most gentle soul I’ve ever met. It hurts me that there’re people who are capable of taking advantage of this. Hope there’ll be more reactions to his songs ❤️
What makes me love this more is the fact that in the music video of this song, the roles are actually reversed, and there's a woman experiencing this kind of relationship, meaning that this can happen to everyone regardless of their gender. I have a huge respect for this man and what he does. Thank you for the video. It was really nice. 🙏🤍
I’ve listened to his music since I was 8-9 and this song was always one of my favourites bc of its gorgeous melody, now I sit here almost 20 just coming out of an abusive relationship, bawling at the lyrics of this song that I couldn’t quite comprehend at that age. He is just brilliant, and I hope he never lets anyone treat him this way ever again. Please do more hozier reactions mere!! Love you🫶🫶🤞☺️
Another great reaction as always, thank you Mere! This is such an beautiful and heartbreaking song, I love Hozier's music. If you're planning to react to any more of it, I would recommend you react to "From Eden" along with the music video. It's one of his more underrated songs, but the lyricism is incredible.
A powerful song and a quality reaction from you! This song and your words shine a light on an important issue: men as victims of domestic violence is a reality that is often overlooked. What can we do differently as a society/culture to make men feel like they can share there stories and pain instead of “being a man” and depressing it? If looking to do more Hozier, his new album is awesome. I’d love to hear your reaction to any of those songs, but especially “All Things End” and “First Light.”
You should react to Work Song. It’s such a beautiful-sounding song and I’ve never quite been capable of fully grasping the lyrics, so would love your take on it!
i’ve always loved this song, but can’t believe i never actually listened to the lyrics. i thought it was this beautiful sweet song lmao. to be fair i’m mesmerized by the guitar playing 🔥but thank you for doing this song mere!!
When you’re abused and literally harmed, your body produces some endorphins. When I used to self harm, the blood would literally feel weirdly like a sweet release but there is shame and sadness with it.
i’ve been a fan of hozier for many many years and for most of that time i listened to cherry wine as a love song and only a love song. only about a year ago did i realize what it was really about and shit it messed with me
Mere, you def need to listen to Bjork. 100% recommend her album “Vulnicura”. Lionsong and Black Lake (quite a long song) are really worth the listen and the lyrics are next level. Love you always❤
I read the “open hand or closed fist” part as kind of commentary on how male domestic abuse victims are often ignored cause like a woman slapping her boyfriend is an image that’s used so often in romcoms and everything and so normalised so men can often be ignored when it’s that kind of thing so it’s like, open hand or closed fist, it’s the same thing either way.
Hi Mere. I made a point of watching the music video for this first before your reaction. The song IS about the violence he has suffered because of her but for some reason I don't know why, he has reversed the roles in the video. She is the one with the bruises and seeing her black eye in the mirror. It's pretty emotional. Would love to hear your comments after watching it. Love from the UK 🇬🇧
@@aeri_taylors-version i might be reaching here but what if it's about what "sells" more? as in less people would be drawn (at least i would assume) to the reversed video. i believe the same thing happened with Take Me to Church where he replaced "he" with "she" in the lyrics but then settled on portraying a gay couple + homophobic alt right group in the music video.
@@laincoubert7236yeah I mean he was also able to get a very famous actress to play the main character in the music video.... But yeah I agree with the person above me in the reason for him changing these things is that it can happen to anybody.... I think take me to church was switched because the song is kind of about his OWN sexuality in contrast to his religion he grew up in but... He was also very inspired by the gay men that were being beaten to death in Russia on livestreams back then ... So that's where the music video story comes in.
A beautiful song about a man that leaves a toxic relationship : Keeping me alive by Jonathan Roy. The acoustic version blows me away. He also has one narrated as the close friend/family of someone deeply struggling with mental health : lost If you are interested in another song about a female point of view of DV, Bad thing from Jesy Nelson is on this theme with a music video.
I fell in love with Hozier's music because of this song and just like Ultraviolencee it affected me a lot because i've lost loved ones to this cycle of domestic violence. When it comes to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's case, theirs was a toxic relationship but there's nothing like mutual abuse, which is what a lot of people who don't want to take sides say. Johnny has a history of violence and he got involved with Amber when she was very young, he abused her till she'd had enough and fought back, but the thing with our world is its fixation with perfect victims and the moment you don't fit into that mould they're not for you. The case is so saddening because it was a social media prosecution and how Amber was mocked by everyone is sickening. The only thing it did is make it easier for men like Depp to scare their victims to silence with similar lawsuits
Honestly I think being lost in the tide of her breathing could also mean that he's afraid she'll end her life if he leaves her. Often and domestic violence situations the abuser will threaten to take their life. I dunno if that's what he meant but as all poetry, Hozier's lyrics have so many meanings.
a lot of people take this as a straightforward love song on first listen because of the soft vocals and instrumental and even the lullaby-like melody, which i think is deliberate. on a casual first listen, the most concern i’ve seen people show has been a vague sense of something being off. it’s only when you start to really examine the lyrics that you understand what’s actually going on. beautiful song and great analysis, it was so interesting seeing this from your perspective + i learned a couple new things!
I clicked on this immediately because I thought this was Lana’s Cherry song!! 😂I’m Lana and Mere obsessed 😅 Really glad I stayed to listen to something new ❤ You get so deep into the lyrics, I love it
This song is a paradox. I can't listen to it very often even though, in my opinion, Hozier is a remarkable artist. First time I heard this incredibly beautiful melody and then realized darkness in lyrics it hit me like a truck (still does) "Open hand or closed fists would be fine"... Jesus. It is not fine. It is as "NOT FINE" as they come.
Please react to Breathe me by Sia “Breathe Me” is a cry for help, a cry for hope, a cry for survival. It talks about depression and the feeling of not being good enough. The feeling of worthlessness and no self love. A such beautiful song !
Hi!! RUclips just recommended one of your videos and I must say I've been binge watching everything I can! (I've watched alllll videos of ldr reacts already) I love your fresh perspective, and yes, I do agree cherry and wine is almost a male version of ultraviolence. There's something in both songs that bother me, maybe because I can somewhat relate. I absolutely adore Hozier, but Cherry and Wine is not one of his best songs IMO lol Recently he released a new album, sorta based on Dantes Inferno/pandemic, and it's so beautiful it almost hurt in a beautiful way. He sings about the different levels of hell in his own perspective, and I particularly love Francesca and I, Carrion - probably the most love song in this album lol But all of it is just a masterpiece, and it would be amazing to see your perspective! The poetry in his lyric is not always obvious and the more I listen and read about it all, it makes me realize how much of a genius he is!
