My Viltrox 13mm 1.4 became my favourite lens on APS-C pretty quick, when I moved to full frame, I just had to buy this 16mm 1.8 too and I was not disappointed! - The only downside is it's quite heavy, sometimes I bring my Samyang 18mm f/2.8 when I want a light daily carry.
@@CLVlogs05 f/2.8 is around f/4 equivalent on full frame - with such a wide focal length, you get no 3d pop or background/foreground separation. Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I bet sony announces a full-frame 14mm F1.8 that is roughly the same size as the 20mm G-lens. Price it at $999.

I already have the Sony 24 2.8 (bought for when I want the compact setup and not to bring attention), Zeiss 16mm- 35 F4 (very nice lens and good on stabilisation). I fancy this lens for its speed but am concerned about jittery active stabilisation (a must for me is good active stabilisation). The Sony 20mm F1.8 is not that much more money on offer in the U.K. difficult choice. If Viltrox can crack the stabilisation secret sauce they’d clean up.
Thanks for the awesome review, Mark! This one looks epic AF. I have and love Viltrox 23mm and 75mm because of your excellent recommendations! I will be using the 75 for a group family photo shoot this weekend. Looking forward to it!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I have been blown away by it even though I have to step way back from the subject. But I’ll bring the Sigma 30MM as well so I can get a variety of shots. What program do you use for your photo editing? Light Room?
Thanks a lot Mark. I was thinking to buy the Sony 20mm f/1.8 as my first full frame lens when I buy Zv e1. Never knew that it is not the right fit for vlogging with dynamic stab. Will buy Sony 35mm f1/1.8 along with this. Any suggestion for a good telephoto zoom? (Can’t afford Sony 70 to 200 f/2.8 gm 2 😊)
Nice review as usual ! The lens is indeed very sharp, but the background blur is a bit busy in the park vlogging scene. I'm very impressed with the Viltrox 24/1.8 FE, but my 13/1.4 has AF issues, it likes to pulse. I thought the issue was the ZV-E10, but it's similar on A74. For a Chinese brand, Viltrox is charging a lot, USD 438 here in China, double of the older series. Not sure how this will fly.
too bad about the 13 - mine doesn't pulse at all unless it's extremely low light. If you're using aperture priority in video you also might see some stepping
Viltrox 13mm 1.4 with DAS gives you the real 16mm full frame with a ton of blur. It's actually so good that I'm going to sell my 10-18 Sony along with the 17-28 Tamron. In that range I can use foot zoom
@markbennettcameracrisis what’s the real world focal difference between this lens and the Sony 11mm after all the zoom/crop to remove vignettes on the zve1?
Received mine two days ago (for Sony), and it is an awesome lens. But the lens connection to a MAC and PC does not work at all and I needed to return it for an exchange. Per Viltrox, there is something wrong with an internal circuit. This may be rare, since I could not find anyone else having the same issue. The lens-to-computer function is only important if upgrading firmware is important to you.
Hello Mark, thinking about buying this lens and wondering how good is it to zoom in to a picture for cropping? I mainly use my Sony A74 when I go on a cruise. I love the wide & low light picutes I can take with this lens.
Mark, I was shooting today with the Viltrox 16mm and also the Sigma 24-70 II on my ZVE1. I notice that on the Sigma, if the lens is in AF, you can turn the manual focus ring and it temporarily takes over focus; not so on the Viltrox. Turn the Viltrox focus ring while in AF all you want, nothing happens. Seems you have to switch it to manual to manual focus. Any thoughts on why this is or if there is a way on the Viltrox to make it manual focus or AF Assist if you need to budge toward a certain object or seamlessly take over focus while in AF?
Nice. Where are Viltrox lenses made? I find the wide to super wide angle lenses the most fun of all to use. I even took a portrait of my friend and his wife with a Nikon (F2A) 16mm full frame fisheye lens. Little weird.
it isn't small for sure - but there is a difference between a 20 and 16 for me. I have the 20 1.8 from Sony and it's just way too tight on dynamic stabilization. But I should get in that 20 2.8 fro review!!
So if I take my sony 16 to 35 f4, focus it at 16mm vs this 16mm 2.8 fixed, what advatages does this viltrox give me? Viltrox- more bocca blur, slightly sharper image? Gary
Sounds like condensation. Try to keep your camera and lens inside you bag and let it adjust for 20 mins or so when you enter areas of different temps. Going from warm to cool temps or vice versa will cause condensation and damage your gear eventually
