I replaced my diverted valve since it was very difficult to turn and would not even do a 1/4 turn. Replaced it and now it turns like butter. Replace the valve. Pricey but worth it.

Mine is sticking again so I will need to replace that valve soon.

I wonder if you could buy a knob with a deeper extension. Those square fittings are fairly common.
