I sometimes think the Beatles are the only four people who never truly realised the power of that unit. They were fantastic as individuals, but there was just something magic about them together. As insiders, they couldn't see what we can see, which makes us the lucky ones.

John had natural Liverpool wit, the people of the city have it naturally. Look at the way they wound the media around their little fingers at New York airport when they arrived. The 4 of them had it. Sometimes this is misinterpreted. Liverpool humour at the time was quite mocking. In Liverpool if you applied that to others you got it back, so all was equal. But when you did it to others not accustomed to the humour it was taken as an insult. John never knew when to stop it, Paul did.

Obviously, I'd defer to Elliot Mintz on the subject -- but my sense is that John had a much easier time letting his guard down with Elliot than with other journalists. There was genuine trust there.
And, Elliot, thanks for all you've given us for so many years. I used to listen to "The Lost Lennon Tapes" in the mid-to late 1980s every Sunday morning. I was very pleased to discover, many years later, that your good works continued, representing the likes Bob, no less. My utmost respect and admiration ...

No kidding. John was talented guy. But he was a real person. At times tormented by fears insecurities etc. He was a bad dad to Julian. He was a wonderfully flawed human being. He was a peace advocate. But many were at the time. John went through drug addiction, too much booze etc. Most of us did at the time. I love his music. Frankly i think George was always the most spiritual Beatle. Gone to soon like way too many of us of that time. RIP John Lennon

I used to see him too mostly without Yoko . I saw him with Yoko at a Japanese restaurant a few times. I remember John walked with a kind of bounce in his step & always answered when someone spoke to him. New York City people are jaded & see celebrities often. Every morning you can see Barbara Walters walking in Central Park, Madonna runs there a few times a week, Ive seen Paul McCartney a few times in the Hamptons shopping in the small A&P. & at the Met. Museum which I live a few blocks from. Paul is not as friendly as John was I notice he does'nt acknowledge people all the time & Ringo isn't friendly I saw him at The Rainbow room I think Liza Minelli or Dionne Warwick was the act. I never saw George.. Linda was always a New Yorker at heart & not friendly at all. If anyone spends time in NYC you will see celebrities. Bloomingdales, Macys in Herald Square, Barneys are good places to see a celebrity. At a Billy Joel concert we sat next to Pink & her new husband Corey. She requested a song because it was their favorite & he refused to sing Just The Way You Are in honor of their wedding. Im a registered nurse in a major NYC hospital & have taken care of many celebrities during childbirth. NYC is the best city in the world. People literally die trying to get here. Im lucky enough to have been born here & lived here for my 60 years on this earth. Im not unique in seeing celebrities they're all over the city. I even saw Yoko when there was an exhibition at the rock & Roll Hall of Fame annex with John & Yoko belongings. The staff did not like her at all. I also remember the phone with a direct line to Yoko & she would call & speak to fans. I have never asked anyone for an autograph.

There’s something really nice about this interview - an air of tranquility as they walk together on the beach. John seemed like he was finally at peace in regards to the whole breakup and could now look back fondly without regret. I can almost feel the nostalgia of those highs and the sadness of those lows. Such a shame he’s gone. He was truly one of a kind.

This is about as normal as I've seen Lennon in a interview.
A re-union would certainly have been something to see. They made such great music/songs it's hard to bet against them not producing new gems. We all know McCartney (my personal favorite) went on to produce more excellent songs. So, there's proof "time" had NOT stopped that Beatles talent. They ALL went on for years being quite successful. So, a return to a Lennon/McCartney collaboration (Harrison/Ringo too!) would have given us more wonderful Fab Four music...siiiiigh, what might have been. 💔

Elliot, I am so glad you were able to get this interview with John at this time. You really had a wonderful way of bringing out the best of John, void of sarcasm, and silly faces etc. He felt completely comfortable around you and the world gets to see this side of John, probably the only one of it's kind as interviews with him go. He didn't have to be "on". I've seen this interview many times and it always leaves me smiling.Thank you and well done Mr. Mintz, well done.

Elliot always had the most down-to-earth discussions with John. I remember this interview but at the time I was really too young to understand the depth of it. It seems John had certainly grown up and was looking back in a postive reflective way but yet at the same time pretty much stating that he's glad to be where he is and well beyond all that happened to him when he was younger. Thanks Elliot... great interview... and it's great to look back and see John as a more secure and settled person.

Sadly John Lennon died 7 years before I was born, but like everyone else, I grew up listening to The Beatles and his solo work. I've seen many interviews and documentaries that JN appeared in and it seems like John was quite relaxed and put at ease in this short clip. It look like he wasn't playing up for the cameras, he seemed calm and reflective but also a happy, secure and settled person finally at peace with everything that was going on in his life at that particular time of his life at 33 years old. The sad thing is that John was denied the opportunity to watch his sons grow up, continue to make great music, and get to 80 as he would be this year.

At that point, the only thing keeping them from getting back together was the fact that they were scattered all over. John was open to it, Paul probably would have been up for it but was busy with his own Wings Over America tour. George, as the youngest member, was not especially keen on going back to a situation where he was treated as a high school kid, and Ringo was off doing his movies and making Number 1 records. It's good to see, at least with John here, that the animosity has worn off and a reunion could have been possible, provided they were all in one place at the same time. But that's life, folks!

It always seemed like three of them wanted to regroup, but one of them wouldn't be into it. I think Ringo, and Paul after a year or two after the split, would have been happy to give it a go, but John, despite waxing nostalgic on occasion, would quickly get over it and decide he didn't want to bring the Beatles back. George was, to my view, the biggest obstacle. While the other three seemed to make their peace by the mid-70s, George did seem to carry a bit more resentment, particularly towards Paul. Even by the time of the Anthology, during the scenes when the three surviving Beatles were together, sometimes you could see him give Paul a sidelong glance.

My Grandpa, an english amatorial film maker living in Margate was once walking Toby (his Dog) on the beach. He still have some Super8 films or kind of cassettes in a box somewhere from the day when he met John and Yoko on the beach filming "something funny"! When he saw the video of this song on TV he realised that on that morning he (in some way) was testimony of the creation of a Masterpiece!

Forgot to add. He was such a peace loving gentle soul, which makes the manner of his untimely passing all the more tragic.
Even now, I can clearly remember that freezing cold December morning after he had died. Sitting on a bus, going to work. Staring at my newspaper. It was the biggest shock since Elvis died 3 years earlier.
John would have had a whole lot more to contribute. As such Double fantasy was defo a bitter sweet experience.
    RIP John
