Wich isn't even that weird when you think about the fact that the GDR (east germany) was controlled by the soviets, soviet puppet state. Everything from the west was seen as potential propaganda, or something like western music as something immoral, capable to ruin our values. Not mine, I grew up in west germany. I was born in 1982 and I was in elementary school, when the cold war was on its peak. So I remember the last stages of east germany quite well, from everything my parents or grandparents told me, and from everything I heard on the news. Some things were scary, like nuclear threats against the west. Unfortunately we're getting these again these days. Sad. My parents used to visit friends in the east from time to time, to bring them stuff they weren't able to buy in the east. I still have some money, coins from east germany. I was always amused about how they felt like plastic chips. Cheap stuff. ^^ @@SaeedReacts.

Flake, the guy on the keys, wrote two books about his time growing up in eastern Germany and how Rammstein was founded. Also he goes deep into their first concerts, expectations, fears and success. Brilliant books. Sadly, as far as I know, they're only available in German.

Königs Wusterhausen is a small town southeast of Berlin. The first radio transmitter in Germany was built there in 1916, initially for military use during WW1, then in 1920 for public broadcasting. The opening radio announcement ("Attention, Attention. This is Berlin Königs Wusterhausen and the German shortwave transmitter. We're broadcasting dance music.") was verbatim the first ever public short wave transmission back in 1920. The announcer in the video is from Finland and had to learn the historic German radio enunciation first.

But in westgermany was also many stuff forbidden in radio. TVs and Radios were restricted in East Germany under Soviet regime, they could only listen to or see what was sanctioned by the state (same as Russia right now, really). They only had access to radios and TVs that could only tune into state propaganda. Radio Free Europe was set up to transmit across the border into the Soviet Union and millions of people hacked their radios or built their own receivers, this was basically the only way they knew what was happening in the rest of the world and it allowed them to hear western music.
Incidentally, this is also how many of them found out about the severity of Chernobyl at the time. Radio Free Europe was used to broadcast health advice into the Soviet Union telling people to keep their children inside, eat canned goods and tune in for updates. A lot of Soviet citizens continued to listen because they knew their own regime was lying to them about the disaster.
It's all this that makes his song and video one of my favorites of theirs. They're so good at artistic representation of their lived experiences.

The first words in the video are those from the first radio transmission in Germany. It ended with: "We play dance music."
Music was allowed in Eastern Germany - as long as it matched with the eastern ideology. So no rebellish kind of music like rock music etc. and of course only news that were approved by the government.
The song is about the situation in East Germany (before the reunion) where the USSR controlled East German government tried to control all influences to the people. All band members grew up in this circumstances. As you may know, that government even build a deadly border where more than 300 people were killed while trying to escape from that state. And the people living under this regime found a way to escape a bit by hearing radio stations from West Germany. Therefore "their ears became eyes" while hearing what they are not allowed to see. The band members are dressed like artists / actors in the 1950th-1960th.
Later on also West TV was (illegaly) received - at least in some parts of Eastern Germany. But the style of the video seems to address the former years.

Rammstein was founded in East Germany. Radio and television broadcasting was controlled by the government and you were not allowed to travel outside or to listen to west radio or west television. But the broadcasts overcame the east german borders and people listened secretly. So the information and the culture was spreaded even if the east german government wants to prohibit it.
