      Definitely agree, wouldn't have "saved" the film in my opinion (the plot relies too much on characters making appallingly bad decisions) but at least it would have improved it and made some character's death more meaningful.

      Flicks And The City / Jan, wasn't sure if I was supposed to put post here to be eligible for your wonderful gift package so apologies for posting this twice!
      Really enjoyed your video! I agree that there were several scenes that I wished they'd left in for the very reasons you stated. It will be interesting to see if they'll be put back in for a special edition/director's cut when the blueray version comes out! Hopefully this will be the case, and makes sense that they would do it that way. Also would have been nice to see the Shaw/David scenes as well! Just my thoughts! lol Thanks again for sharing this awesome video! Lady Anne ^^Ö^^

    • @HaohmaruHL
      @HaohmaruHL 7 лет назад +5

      Actually, the way it was released as a prologue promo makes it better and builds some hype. It would look pretty stupid if we witnessed the last supper when they go to sleep and then movie jump cuts back to them waking up 5 minutes later. That small time between this prologue scene and the actual release of the movie help it feel more natural. And also that fake stomach ache self-irony joke wouldn't even work in the actual movie because we know exactly when we get to alien infestation.

      KaloTube we have never seen her dying. How can we say that her death was lame? We don't even know if she was killed by David, crash, or infection from Prometheus (trylobite 'birth' could've not been the end of her black goo related problems).

      Mateusz Różnowski When he wanted to kill Daniels, he said, he'll do to her what he did to Shaw. Which screws up that neat prologue. And the fact she probably never met the engineers.

    • @gregmcamp

      Scott has mentioned that one of the sequels he wants to make will be a prequel to Covenant that ties prometheus them together by exploring the Shaw storyline. Though I don't believe that happens. Initially he said that the Prometheus sequels were going to drift further from the Alien universe and that didn't happen.

    The only scene that was actually meant to be in the film, was the prologue with Shaw and David. From what I've heard, it was cut after a test screening. The Last Supper and She Won't Go Quietly videos were never meant to be part of the film, but to serve as viral marketing materials.

    The film should have been everything that happened between promethius and Covenant. They fucked up skimming over Shaw's death her relationship with David. Punisher Armory. I don't think it would have hurt to have the omitted scenes be part of the feature, but I also think most of us true fans had watched the omitted scenes multiple times before the movie opened in theatres yesterday (05.19.2017). In some ways I thought it a bit clever by Scott to do things the way they were done as all of us Alien nuts had already watched the omitted scenes so we knew some of the "back story" before the movie started and non-Alien nuts never really missed the scenes they didn't know about.

    • @punisherarmory1382

      i dont think he necessarily is out of touch, i just think he's trying to expand the universe too rapidly and cramming a bunch story into this and prometheus. he said he doesn't want there to be as big of a time gap between alien films anymore so hopefully this will help him better pace the movies.

  • @Bern76ard
    @Bern76ard 7 лет назад +13

    Here's the thing. The trailers were structured and paced in such different ways that I was truly hyped about the movie believing that Mr Scott had created the perfect Alien film. From the spooky Nature Boy cover to the bizarre Country Roads the trailers were genuinely brilliant at their job. Seeding my anticipation with high hopes of drama and mystery and tension. The interview in which Mr Scott spoke of the challenge of scaring the shit out of people had me worried about seeing the film thinking it might be too much for my heart to take. Alas the film was not like the trailers. It looked amazing and sounded fantastic but it just didn't work as a journey. If it was a rollercoaster then the promise of thrilling drops and turns were found to be straights and minor dips with the breaks on. I am hopeful that there is an alternative edit that with new eyes can save this movie from the disappointing theatrical release. The promise is all there but when I hear phrases about keeping things at set lengths I get annoyed. We are not babies. Film is an art form and shouldn't pander to conformity. A story takes as long as it takes to unravel as does a song and this film I'm certain would bask in glory in it's full length 12" dance edit. Rock on Ridley. Please Please Me.

    • @bobrew461
      @bobrew461 4 года назад

      "A story takes as long as it takes to unravel ..." Studios don't think like that alas. They write scripts in 3 acts, and there has to be some action written in every 10 - 15 minutes to keep the audience interested (their view, not mine). Something has to happen to the character(s) near the end of the first act...It's a formula they cannot deviate from. Hence so many flops!

      Walter is shitty alright. In a battle to the death he gets side-tracked by simple conversations and murdered by a much weaker, slower and crazier version of himself. My god, who are designing these things? Why are´nt any androids in this universe working as intended? :P

    • @Infernalhazard
      @Infernalhazard 7 лет назад

      Because making an android less human and much more calculated doesn't have a potential to lead to 'David', the haywire monster that kills without mercy. Gee I wonder why they wanted more human traits in the later models....

    • @Tome4kkkk
      @Tome4kkkk 7 лет назад

      Idiots took a break that is. This was one of the best scenes in the movie. Not only it best highlighted the differences between the android models but also provided a tension because of what David could have done to Walter right there. Aaand idiots like those are exactly the reason why we have short films where stories are almost always an obvious lowhanging fruit.

      I don't know if that flute scene may have been some sort of connection to the scene in Prometheus where David activates a hologram on the flight deck/ control room of the Engineer ship and you see one of the hologram Engineers blow into a flute to activate the control panel. Also just an observation from the end of Prometheus. When the Engineer ship takes off and the Prometheus ship crashes into it to bring it down the Engineer ship starts rolling along the ground like a wheel then falling towards Shaw UPSIDE DOWN. Yet when she eventually enters the crashed Engineer ship to get to David the flight deck/ control room is right way up (?) and also finds Davids head and body exactly where they fell considering the ship has just rolled along on its side with the loose contents inside like being in a washing machine.

      The first ship was located in the pyramid. They would have to locate another pyramid to find another ship. Begs the question what happened at the second site ? Similar to the first, how many more pyramids?

    • @garymartin6461
      @garymartin6461 7 лет назад

      Prince Kosmo After the Engineer rips Davids head off and kills Weyland and the others the Engineer takes off in that same ship meaning when Prometheus brings it down David and other dead bodies are still on that ship which eventually cartwheels and falls upside down onto Shaw. After Shaw escapes the Engineer and the squid alien and David tells her of the other ships you see her return to the upside down crashed ship to get David and you see her lowering his body from a hole in the side of said crashed ship so they can go to a new ship. Any way these Engineer ships don't seem to fly very well. You have the Engineer ship in Prometheus crash, Davids crashes in Covenant then you have the crashed one in Alien. The Engineers should do a safety recall on them. lol.

      It's irony in the plural sense. "Irony- a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character's words or actions is clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character."

      Hawken Valhalla that's a very specific type of irony, and since it's not the one used in common conversation, it's incorrect unless specified. In this case it's foreshadowing. and even your definition doesn't fit, as people didn't know he was gonna be literally burning up until the movie. that, is foreshadowing.

      It feels like the original idea was to do just that but once Prometheus wasn't received very well they jumped ahead and tried to tie it into Alien faster, instead making it feel rushed with missing pieces. Some of the scenes we saw here and potentially other we haven't seen yet could make it a little better. We'll see.

      at this point they should just start this all over and make a new series called Engineers, that way you dont need it to all end up matching Alien 1. Disappointing they changed the whole direction of it because of some crybaby fan boys that didn't get enough of seeing the xenos like five other films. Its too bad they didn't keep these separate and just borrow pieces from one another such as the alien creatures itself.

      I agree this was a really effective scene and really liked it when they released it.
      I got the sense though that they were trying to mirror Prometheus' opening where David was wandering around by himself, and also show the contrast between the two characters. David basically fucks around - watches a film, plays basketball, bleaches his hair, watches people dream whilst Walter actually seems to spend the entire time maintaining the ship and crew.
      If they include this scene in a director's cut, I hope they can do so without ruining the pacing.

      MsZeunicorn ; I was feeling the exact same. It was a loss for the story not not get the Shaw/David relation more clarified. Maybe that could have shed more light on if he really had some kind of romantic feelings for her, and the aliens, the eggs etc were to be the children they could never have, or if she only was a highly regarded "tool" in his megalomaniac new creation programme.

    In a weird way, the lack of fuller character development of the team puts us partly in David's disconnected bond with humans. It annoys me that they cut the character building, but added like 15 minutes of fighting a random alien on the ship. The climactic battle was the fight on the cargo ship, but they ruined it by making it play second fiddle to the "hit it with a truck" scene.

    I was lucky enough to get to see Alien: Covenant about 4 months before it's official release at a screening. Unless I missed it on that first viewing, I am pretty sure that the surviving robot was Walter, NOT David, as in the finished release of the film. They still showed Walter put the embryos in storage, suggesting either that he was contemplating what David told him, or maybe just had the curiosity of wanting to have the specimens to research. Did anyone else get to see a pre-release screening that can verify if the ending was changed this way?

I was very confused when I first saw the movie and had even wondered why the heck was Franco's role so minimal. it felt very choppy and I couldn't connect much with the characters either. These deleted scenes finally makes so much sense. Whoever made the decision to cut all these scenes needs to be fired from the team for the next project.

    • @72SeasonsGone
      @72SeasonsGone 2 года назад

      Yeah I sort of agree with what you're saying but I think the one who made the decision was the director lol in the video she said that he likes to keep his movies right around the 2-hour Mark so I think it had partially to do with timing. But when it comes to James Franco I almost think he kind of pissed scott off or something lol I agree though I think some of part at least part of the scenes should have been in there like the last supper maybe not the full 20 minute version but a 5-minute version of it would have been good and then the part with Shaw and David at least part of that should have been in. Maybe not the voiceover part where he says they're going to the engineers home planet because to me those dudes don't seem like engineers they seem to more like another one of the engineers science experiments because they did not seem high-tech at all and I can't think that he killed them all he by killing one small colony I mean am I supposed to believe that that's their whole society a few several hundred dudes in robes. I like this director and the series I just hope the next one can be even better because this one was a lot better than Prometheus which I saw in the theater and I walked out feeling kind of like I wasted my time with that one

      Unlikely. Most of these things are not deleted scenes but viral content made specifically for web release. They were notably directed by Luke Scott, Ridley's son, so they're unlikely to end up in the movie because adding them back in is liable to mess with the tone since it wasn't directed by Ridley(although the prologue Last Supper fits in well). Same with the viral content for Prometheus. The prologue with David and Shaw is the only one I can see being added to the theatrical cut, since that one seems like it might have been directed by Ridley(The director info in the youtube upload is left vague) and was intentionally left out to keep audiences focused on the Alien storyline.

      Zepo ; Trust me: there will be a MASSIVE Directors cut on this one, and it needs it. A great interactive map explaining the engineers planet would be nice. And; it did not look like the original engineers meeting them there when they landed. They looked too small and frail.
      Maybe the only one who did was that Priest-looking guy in white raising his hand in welcome just David showered them with living crude oil-bombs...

    Jan: Excellent information, cogently presented and comprehensive work - well done!
    I am simply a movie lover, without any kind of legitimate pedigree as a film maker [unlike so many folks on youtube who seem to make that kind of claim]. This video of yours discussing A:C's deleted scenes only makes me wonder why on earth Ridley decided not to include them in the theatrical cut. Nearly all of the deleted scenes you discuss here would certainly have made A:C much more thematically fulfilling in my mind since most of the biggest problems I had with A:C would have been significantly mitigated with their inclusion.
    It just seems such a curious and unfathomable decision by Scott...Do you have any thoughts or info on why this was the case?
    cheers!

    • @joesatchton212
      @joesatchton212 7 лет назад +3

      +HKreload: Since when did it become OK for film makers to release scenes for films on youtube but not make them part of the film itself?
      Your argument about them being freely available on youtube is irrelevant - the fact is, as this video states, most all of the deleted scenes in this case would have ADDED or CLARIFIED events on the film. Their omission, IMO and in the opinion of others, does appear to objectively detract from the theatrical release. That however is only OPINION. Feel free to differ.
      In your example about James Franco, you are basically linking character development with the number of lines they have or possibly onscreen time. Again, this could not be more incorrect. It's called "acting" - that word encompasses not only spoken lines of dialog, but also non-verbal means of communication, both with fellow actors onscreen and also to us as the audience. Sir Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter - yet he was only onscreen for less than 20 minutes.
      Living under a rock? Bro, you could not be more smarmy. It has nothing to do with that at all. Personally, I am a fan of the entire franchise but I ain't no 24/7 fanboi that is compelled to endlessly seek out every minute detail of a given topic in some geekily-maniacal manner. And last I heard, not everyone has access to the internet or even uses youtube or even cares to watch TV. Some people like to read books and do stuff outdoors like sports.
      Finally, I saw Alien in the theater in its original run - did you? Didn't think so.

    • @FlicksAndTheCity
      @FlicksAndTheCity  7 лет назад +2

      @Joe Satchton, so glad you enjoyed the video and although HKreload is correct that these videos were available before the film, it's just not the same as including them in the film. The prologues were released quite a long time before the movie came out and were very good as marketing material but I believe the movie could have been much better by simply also including them in the movie.
      Any filmmaker can't actually expect that scenes which aren't in the film you see in the cinema to be considered as significant as if they had been in the final film. And HKreload, the film really has to stand by itself ultimately. The best films out there don't have a prerequisite that you must have watched trailer 1, 2, 3 or marketing video 4, 5, 6 to properly understand whatever is going on. Any supplementary material can be enjoyable extras for anyone who wants to delve in but can't be considered strictly a part of the film that you paid to see in the cinema.
      My only assumption (and it could be wrong) for why Scott didn't include the prologues is because he felt the movie would be too long with them, or perhaps he couldn't see how to fit them in for reasons. A very small part of the Elizabeth Shaw scene was used in the middle of the movie, but I would have thought it could have all been used. Killing a major character off screen in between films generally isn't the best idea.

    • @joesatchton212
      @joesatchton212 7 лет назад

      @Flicks And The City: Hey, thanks so much for taking time to reply :)
      Yes, I stand corrected - the items under discussion are "prologues" and/or supplementary materials. I guess in my old school perspective, and if in a future DC or special version, these scenes do eventually get inserted, then they would be at that point "deleted scenes" wouldn't they? Ah, semantics - what a wonderfully pointless thing, especially on the net. :D ;)
      Your key point, which I do happen to agree with, is that the "best" films do generally need to stand on their own. Further, excellent point about about supplemental materials and their role in films - they shouldn't be crutches. Citizen Kane stands on its own, The Godfather, Shawshank Redemption...on and on, most all of the classic films in cinema history have been deemed classics despite the fact that they contain or offer no additional stuff. This fashion of "director's cuts" and reams of supplementary materials really originated over the last 20+ years or so, in many cases as pure marketing ploys [e.g., "you love the movie! now get the DVD / BD to get even more extra stuff!"] - that's totally cool as an option and I love that stuff as well.
      In the case of A:C, my opinion stands and is generally similar to your reaction here on your video - I have now seen A:C three times and absolutely feel that almost all of the "prologue" / extra scenes would have mitigated, to varying degrees, the thematic and characterization issues I had with the movie.
      Technically, Scott has done a typically amazing job, no question. Visuals are spectacular, the creature effects and horror elements largely are terrific, the audio is equally great and the pacing pretty good for a three act film.
      But I have said this on other posts - A:C to me was like an exquisitely prepared 3 Michelin star meal that comes with portions fit for a child...I just wanted a wee bit more. :)
      cheers and thanks again for the reply and the vid[s]! SUBBED!

    Alien: Covenant is a movie that grabs you tightly and never lets go. It brings back that sense of fear and claustrophobia that was present in the first film, and ends up being a truly satisfying prequel to the alien films. Ridley Scott returns to his "baby" that is the Alien franchise in such an exhilarating way that it is hard to ever look away from the screen. With a fascinating story exploring the ideas of AI against human condition, Alien: Covenant doesn't just end up being a great Alien movie, it ends up being both a great science fiction movie and an intense psychological thriller. The acting in this movie was terrific, with the stand out being Michael Fassbender. As one of the best parts of this movie, Fassbender returns as not only one but two characters, showcasing his range as a masterclass actor. With creature effects that are horrifying but surprisingly beautiful to look at, the aliens are a true force to be reckoned with, making for some of the scariest and goriest moments in the Alien franchise. While there may be a large amount of questions unanswered by the end of the movie, those are put aside for an ending that changes the Alien movies forever. Overall, Alien: Covenant is a movie that reinvigorates the franchise and is a warm welcome for science fiction and horror fans alike.

    Where is it written a movie has to be only 2 hours long. I wouldn't have minded sitting in the movie another 45 minutes learning more about David and Shaws journey. What and how David was experimenting with the black goo , the creation of the protomorph and the eggs. Too many missing pieces of the puzzle in Covenant that probably won't be explained in Awakening. 4 stars out of 10. 👎🏽

      I am Lucero I agree, if Star Wars and Lord of the Ring are 3 hrs long, why can't Alien be 2 and a half hrs long or more??? At least would be better story telling than this rushed BS.

      movies are usually cut to fit the 2 hour length so that theatres can fit in more rounds of screening per day.
      and yes i agree with you....probably get more plot from the trailers than the movie itself

      David didnt create anything,much like any scientist,he experimented with the black goo,a creation of the engineers,he fiddled and put the goo on various organic forms,he simply took the goo and started to mess with it,he did not create the Xenomorph,the black goo did.

      Shaw was too nice and trusting she should have never trusted David he was up to his own agenda from the beginning... I would have never put David's head back on until we got where we were going... And I would not have taken that goo with me because going to sleep and leave things in David's hands after hearing him make the statement about "sometimes you have to destroy in order to create", was not a good idea... he could have easily recalculated that ship and headed for earth is what I think he wanted in the first place...

      April R Turner thank you, people act so mad she died at David's hands, it's like they are stupidly forgetting he killed her boyfriend with the Pathogen in Prometheus without a tinge of guilt. He didn't care about humans, his motivation in that regard was clear in Prometheus & Covenant, people who can't see that are being willfully ignorant...

    Just saw the movie. I think it's disappointing that David killed Shaw and had her on a table dissected . I thought it was a cheap and lazy approach. It would have been better if he had turned her into a queen. Lastly I can't help , but feel that having David as the creator of the alien it has reduced the mystique of the alien.

    • @cinemar

      This film was entirely based on one of the worst lines in Prometheus. David: "Doesn't everyone want to kill their parents?" The 'kill all humans' bullshit is so old.

      The creature existed way before David according to the fresque in Prometheus amd the fossilised Space Jockey in Alien... one doesn't stop the other... The black goo lead to the creature. So David create another type of Eggs, Facehugger and Xeno to me it's that simple.
      But saying that I can't wait to see Ridley make his own Star Wars Prelogy and disapointed people with improvised script that retcon and modify the good ideas of Alien, it's interesting and fascinating at the ssme time lol (and I'm dead serious) : )

    I has expectiing the film to continiou where was prometheus left.... To see paradise planet and again Elizabeth Shaw playinh the leading role.. only the fact that shes not playing at the film is a TOTAL TURN OFF!!!! WE LOVED HER CHARACTER AND PLAYING AS ACTOR... FIND A WAY TO BRING HER BACK TO THE FILM... SAY THAT THE ALIEN COVENANT WAS A DREAM STORY....

Or maybe director's experiment how to play with fan audience via youtube. Can't wait to lay my hands on director's cut. Reckon there will be a lot.

    Massive respect for an excellent essay on the deleted scenes. The high quality of these articles makes me wonder if they will in time play a significant roll in future movie production. Let us hope they replace the outrageous and discredited test screenings.
    I feel it is sad how the real story of space... the huge deal of colonization... ends up on the cutting room floor.
    (Does current pro-editing software actually have a 'floor' folder? it's been a decade for me.)
    True fans of space don't need 'drama' and 'monsters' to keep them interested. When you are a fan of archeology as I am, people get their rock off over the smallest details. A single embryo would captivate generations of scientists. Yet the movie has so much more on offer.
    Imagine a cinematic experience that just had explorers dealing with the dead engineers in all their Pompain glory. What the fuck happened here??? Wow. Imagine a full scale art instillation of that arena in the middle of nowhere. Frozen death on a geological scale. In the movie it is just a back drop... but... WOW.
