Is the BYD Seal the EV you didn't know you wanted?

- The BYD Seal is a fully electric saloon car that rivals the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, Polestar 2 and Mercedes EQE, among others. It costs from just under £46,000 and offers an official range from a single battery charge of up to 323 miles for the dual motor all-wheel drive model, or up to 354 miles for the single motor Seal.
Straight line performance is impressive, with the dual motor able to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.8 second. However, the Seal is no one-trick pony. In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott assess how this Chinese EV rivals models from Europe and the US, examining its space and practicality, its design, interior quality, technology, charging speed and how it drives. Would you consider a BYD over a Tesla Model 3?

Can confirm that the car has wireless android auto. Apple car play is wired but an update is expected to enable wireless.
And it has V2L which my Atto 3 has too, and no Tesla other than the Cybertruck has. We had a weather event late last year and I ran an extension lead inside and could run my portable induction cooktop, lights etc, and i even ran a lead over my neighbours fence so they could heat their baby's bottle.
We also use it when we're camping so i don't have to bother with gas stoves. A brilliant and useful feature.
Also suitable for young people who like camping in the forest, mountains or beach😊
Amazing
Had our BYD Atto 3 for only 2 days and already got to try the V2L - power outtage this morning due to windy weather, could still iron my clothes, keep fridge & freezer running and my fiance work from home on the PC as usual! Bloody love my car 😍 going to be awesome for camping!

I’ve owned a Tesla Model 3 for 3 years. Had an order in for a highland but Tesla are a joke with the part exchange offer being nearly £5000 less than wbac. I’m getting a seal AWD now
The regeneration level is not the Brake Assist setting, so changing this will make no difference when lifting off the accelerator. The regen is the Energy Feedback setting found under New Energy.
It certainly does make a difference.. The vehicle breaks much more heavily if you have this set to high!.. apparently it didn't make much difference in the earlier versions of the firmware but you can certainly feel it in v 2310
@@i00Productions Interesting, but I believe she was talking about the regeneration you get when lifting off the accelerator.
@@vasil7410 somehow every reviewer has to make comparison with tesla 3 but not in reverse.... BYD does not emphasize on 1 pedal driving they let drivers coast the car like driving ICE
Good looking car and the technology that BYD have is the start of the Chinese onslaught. The European manufacturers will have to up their game and drop their ridiculous prices. Let market forces decide.
>> Let market forces decide.
@@tooltalkNonesense. Chinese cars are subject to import taxes in Europe, which is greater than any EV incentives. The Seal is still arguably better value than comparable ICE cars, let alone EVs. And there are no mandates to buy EVs, anywhere in the world.

Great to see another competitor bring such a compelling car.
Interesting that every complaint/niggle you mentioned it's a software issue which can be fixed with over the air updates.
I'm also glad Tesla have more competition as they've arguably stagnated in few past few years.
I like my Model 3 a lot, but chose a Seal as our family's second EV, instead of the Highland. I think that sums up the situation.
@@vasil7410 I hope the lower ground clearance than your Model 3 doesn't cause any bumper "scraping" issues for you? I cancelled my Seal order and have ordered a Model 3 Highland - for that very reason. More info in another post.
@@Paul-ow9ddI've discovered that the advertised road clearance on the Seal is a bit misleading. There are two soft rubber guards under the left and right sides of the front bumper that give it this low clearance. The idea is you hit these guards before damaging the bumper itself. The actual bottom of the front bumper is fractionally higher than on my Model 3. There are RUclips videos showing this and the option of removing these guards, but I will leave them there because they are serving a purpose. Indeed, they appear to be made so they can be replaced if they get too worn out.
Edit: I should also add that the underside of the Seal overall looks higher than the Model 3. If this is a key criteria for you then I'd suggest inspecting the cars in person.
@@vasil7410 Yep, closely checked clearance in person with a measuring tape with both vehicles. The M3 is better for my driveway entrance. I'm aware of those two sacrificial bits of rubber/hard plastic on the Seal, but they don't help on a steep driveway. The front lip of the bumper is the part that scrapes first, as it's lower.
Live BYD❤
What color? Indigo grey?
I think this is the first serious car BYD has launched in the UK. The Atto and Dolphin are aged designs in China and the interior quality isn't great in places.
This is only the beginning of the Chinese onslaught on the European market.
Would be interested to see how a side by side comparison of efficiency would compare.
BYD's design is not focusing at aero dynamic and weight reduction as much as Tesla does, so lower efficiency is expected. But you get premium interior and more handsome looking (in my personal opinion).
@@brian.z6592 As far as aerodynamics: both the M3 and the Seal have Cd 0.219... the Seal is 250 kg heavier, though the 5000 charge cycle lfp battery is 82 kWh net (M3LR nmc battery 74 kWh net and approx. 2000 charge cycles)... i do not have real life consumption for the Seal... my 2023. M3LR has 8000 kms in it and it measures a 12.5 kWh/100 km all over average consumption during this 8000 kms..., what is obviously quite hard to believe..., but bear in mind, i drive at 70 t0 100 km/ hour when not in town and i drive very rarely on highway... and under Hungary weather conditions...
You didn’t mention the indicator noise!
Do Japanese cars in Japan have indicators on the left of steering wheel?
Another great review Vicky. This certainly looks like a serious contender for many EV's available. Price is still high though whichever way that you look at it but in comparison with what's available it's OK. I still don't like the lack of twisty knobs and buttons but having to scroll though menus is a downside but that's a general moan not just directed at this car. With a car this good in a year of the company bringing cars to Europe it does make me wonder where things will be in 3 to 5 years.
EVs are cheap in China, but tariffs are high in Europe
Am guessing you're driving along the Newforest
The Seal is a reasonably comfortable EV to drive, and the AWD is amazingly powerful. Yes, it does have stalks - unlike the new Model 3 but look carefully at the low ground clearance of the Seal before committing to purchase. Reviewers have never commented on the lower ground clearance on this sedan/saloon or whatever it's called in your market compared to other similar vehicles.
I had a Seal on order to complement our other BYD the Atto 3. I was concerned about the low appearance of the Seal from photos and numerous videos. Only ONE reviewer (in Australia) commented on the lowness of the chassis. My concern was damaging the front bumper on my steep driveway into my carport.
Yep, only 2 centimetres of clearance at the front of the bumper. Some speed humps and parking space wheel bollards as well as poor roads pose a real issue for this vehicle.
Make sure you're happy with its low clearance so you don't end up with buyer's remorse, as I would have.
I cancelled my order and now have a Tesla M3 LR on order. It has 6 centimetres of clearance on my driveway compared to 2. Not a lot, but I can safely negotiate with that. Even my VW Polo has 5 centimetres of clearance - and the Polo is quite low.
Paul, I've managed to just about "beach" my Model 3 on its battery attempting to go down a steep incline into an underground car park and I have scraped my front bumper several times on curbs when parking. It's a low car. Apart from rubber guards under the Seal's front bumper, you may find the Seal actually has better road clearance. If it's this critical then make sure you inspect the physical cars, don't just rely on photos and specs.
Yes in a 30 min test drive of a BYD Seal out of their Brighton (Bentleigh) Melbourne branch the route took us down Nepean Hwy, a left hand turn into South Road then left into Grange Road. Then completing the circuit down a road with speed bumps. Observations: once under way from the lights in Nepean Hwy the Seal lifts its skirts. But over the speed bumps the front of the car bottomed. In Australia with most of these new EVs we’ve been “forced” to put deposits on new models (ATTO 3 and Seal) before test drives possible. Normally with a new car I’d rent one for a weekend before committing to a purchase. So not being a Tesla fan boy, the ease of arranging a Tesla test drive on very short notice encouraged me to test drive a Model 3 and then a couple of weeks later a Y. I couldn’t get over what a sharp drive the 3 was and how it threw you back in the seat. A 2 day Highland 3 rental last week couldn’t get over how quickly it changed lanes and accelerated doing it.
Nothing worse than buyers remorse. My current car is also a Polo, it’s been a grist car and at the 12 year mark still drives super nice.
@@YSA920Just be aware that BYD "deposits" are fully refundable, and it goes towards the price of the car. The Telsa "order fee" is not refundable and is in addition to the price of the car.
@@vasil7410 I'll have to be careful in the Model 3, but as I mentioned above I measured the clearance in my driveway and the Seal was an unusable 2 centimetres above the concrete at the front edge of the bumper. At least the M3 was 4 centimetres better at 6. I guess owning a VW Polo the last couple of years has taught me well with being careful over speed bumps, steep driveways and front wheel concrete stops in carparks. Knowledge I'll use when I get the M3.

If this sport version is GBP46,000 in UK why is it only GBP35,000 (AUD68,000) in Australia?
That's a big difference
These are the reasons
1. No import tariffs on EVs in Australia, 10% on Chinese imports UK
2. 10% GST Australia, 20% VAT UK
3. Direct sales model Australia, Dealer network (dealer margins) UK
4. Less than 1/2 the cost to ship a car Shanghai to east coast Australia vs. say Grimsby UK
By the time you add these up BYD is not making much more if any more margin in the UK v Australia.
Australia has a more comprehensive trade deal with China than we do. Plus China is much closer to Australia so shipping costs are minimal.

A car manufacturer generally don't need their name on a charger to charge there (except for some charger locations being monopolised by one American car brand) and western car brands are also about half the price in China compared to what they are in Europe so the "something wrong" is a general European problem not specific to a particular car brand.

Western car brands are made in China and need to compete with the huge array of better made, better quality and better tech local brands whereas in Europe the old guys still have a monopoly and charge whatever they feel the market will stand, Chinese car manufacturers want a piece of that action hence the overinflated prices…..this will change in the buyers favour soon just like in China

Manufacturer BYD, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, is involved in the largest number of episodes, but many other players are no stranger to statistics on electric car fires in China in 2022 . Here’s who it is and why fires occur according to the Beijing Institute of Technology.
How many of those cars were Hybrids?
Whilst, obviously, ANY car fire is regrettable, considering there are currently around 9.5 million EVs in China, then 7 per day / 2,555 per year is only 0.0003%.
According to the UK Fire Service, around 33,000 petrol and diesel cars caught fire last year out of a UK total of 30 million ICE cars = 0.001%.
