The juror who voted no had more empathy for the shooter than the victims and the parents. I bet that if it were his/her child who was killed by this shooter, he/she would have voted death penalty no question.

Three jurors voted “no;” and two of those three voted “yes” in the first round of voting.

    • @soupnfresh

Dan stop being a liar and making stuff up. Four were undecided in the first round of voting with others voting for life and death. And why does this matter? The final vote was three for life and the rest for death. It only takes one vote for life to remove the death penalty. They didn't need to convince anyone for life or death. It's their individual decision. It wasn't a vote to find him guilty or not guilty where all jurors needed to agree.

The sad thing is that wonderful teacher Nicolas had in eighth grade tried so hard to document his behaviors and reached out to administrators knowing he was a threat in the school. It’s sad because nothing was done. The warning signs was there. I’m a teacher and there are students who are struggling. I feel the school didn’t take enough action and the FBI knew about his plan. And if there was ever a reason. this was it. the jurors do not take in account of the pain of the families. I sincerely hope the monster goes directly into general population. I get it. I am generally against the death penalty. But, when there are rare cases that are so heinous AND there is no doubt of who committed them, then the death penalty should be given, if that's what the parents/familes/friends want.
I think the jurors were told not to take into account their victim impact statememts is absolutely ignorant.

    • @informationoverload2487

You’re clearly not fit for politics. You see the jury doesn’t make their decision based on emotions because it’s literally their jobs to be unbiased. Justice is not to kill people. The death penalty is slowly being outlawed. If ever there was a time to use it. This wasn’t it. You’re too emotional. You’ve become obsessed. The jury did it’s job by enforcing the law while at the same time protecting the rights of the defendant, who clearly suffers from mental illness.

Closure is not a destination, it’s a life choice; a practice. There are fragments of closure, but existing in the present and moving forward is the only true closure that exists, independent of the type/degree of grief.
If a person believes Cruz should suffer, then they would logically prefer a long life (50-70 years) in a Florida private prison over a quick death in ten years.
Also, Cruz is likely to be isolated during his incarceration. That isolation is not sustainable for very long. Many developed nations designate this type of isolation as cruel and unusual punishment. Again, if the goal is to see Cruz suffer, death would be a release; a relief; a kindness.

Does anyone know or think that's a photo of Jaime in the photo of a dancer behind him? It's stunning. I read her words too on the orange banner behind her father and she just sounds like a caring, intelligent young woman. I've been following this trial for months and months and my heart breaks more than words can say for these families and victims. The shooter is one of the most horrific people I have heard from, especially from such a young age (age 4 or earlier he was showing signs of cruel violence towards animals). You just gotta wonder WHY people soo cruel and awful are on this earth as they only bring destruction and evil and pain. The hearts of these beautiful people, and their families, help to overshadow his disgusting evil nature and life long behavior as their love is so great. RIP Jaime and to all of the others who were targeted and murdered that day. The world's prayers and love are with you all. Meanwhile, the shooter will rot in jail and everyone prays he gets what he deserves one day. Gotta feel pretty horrible knowing the entire world hates his guts for what he did when all he apparently wanted was love and acceptance. If he's not a total failure in every way including getting what he REALLY wanted, I don't know who is. These beautiful souls have touched the world with their intelligence, kindness, talents, etc. and will love forever in our hearts.

There are probably far beyond the amount of inmates anyone could guess... living in significant if not downright overwhelming fear while incarcerated. This is not something to indirectly attribute too and normalize. I was glad to hear Fred say that his goal was to originally make peace with the verdict, but preferring an incarcerated death as he mentioned... isnt going to discipline peacefulness.

While tragic beyond belief, I am not surprised. The trial took place in the hypocrite state of Florida, where the right to life is trumped by the 2nd Amendment. Unless people with serious mental problems can be involuntarily locked up for their own protection and the protection of society, and receive treatment, the country will continue suffering the loss of our children and young adults. As a Florida Sheriff recently asked, when have you heard of a sane person committing mass murder? Once a person with dangerous mental problems invokes their 2nd Amendment "right" to buy military style firearms and large quantities of ammunition, it is too late for the mental health treatment or any argument relating to mental health in court.
Take him to Guantánamo Bay, strip him naked, lock him in an outdoor cage, and give him neither food nor water, nothing except the thoughts and prayers of the three jurors for the rest of his life! Show the world how effective and useful thoughts and prayers really are!

As I listened to the Judge read all 17 juror's verdicts I couldn't help to think, my god 17 senseless deaths', how many people have to die before the DP is imposed? I love his analogy of "closure" there never will be closure as long as we visit our daughter in the cemetery. It is a page that we turn the chapter on. I never have been a huge fan of the DP however, I am in absolute favor of abolishing solitary confinement and protecting these people. Let him face his consequences like Ted Bundy did....
