The 9.8 isn’t always guaranteed! Taking a risk every time you buy a “near mint” raw. Especially when you buy online and have to depend on photos to assess the grade. But that’s part of the fun!

It is crazy with how they can be extreme on price differences. Some blow my mind lol.
But what I hate is when a CGC 6.0 book is $600 but a guy selling a non slabbed, his opinion is it’s a 6.0, and wants $600….

Rai #4 (as in SamuRAI) is well documented as the lowest printed pre Unity comic by Valiant. It’s hard to believe now, but I remember when that book was selling for more than $100 (raw, before CGC) and featured in Wizard magazine. Estimated print run of 10-15K.

Keep doing what you are doing. You are a great spokesperson for the hobby.

Small thing to consider - let's say you bought a raw book for $40 - the (possible / probable) press & clean is another $40 - grading is $40 - shipping is $10 - $20. So, $140 for a $300 sale - not saying that's bad, but something to factor in.

    • @shawnconvey7323
      @shawnconvey7323 10 дней назад

I would say your numbers are high on all things here -- press and clean for a modern is around $20 then grading is $20 and if you are getting only one book graded sure shipping will be high but DON'T send one book send a bunch then your shipping works our to $4-7 so yea $40 for the book and another $47 for the rest is still $87 but if you press it yourself then it is even cheaper and the one thing that isn't mentioned in this video is that 1 raw copy is $40 BUT sometimes you gotta buy many copies before you get a 9.8 candidate especially if you are buying online and not in person so people need to go in eyes wide open knowing that the minty copy on ebay is not guaranteed a 9.8.

Great video and topic!! I feel like it’s the same equivalent on the other end too. I know some books that are extremely expensive raw but cheaper graded in comparison to grade . For example people online are asking $160-180 for a beat up raw copy of ASM 194(first app of black cat) but you could get a graded 7.5 for around 200. I would much rather spend the couple extra bucks for a book that’s in way better condition . In this situation a beater of that book should be 100 flat

G.I. Joe #2 is $15 raw? Wow, prices have not changed on that book too much. I remember buying a copy at a comic shop for my G.I. Joe collection only a few years after it came out, I paid $10. I thought that was outrageous at the time. Now I could probably buy $300 in raw copies and maybe get a 9.8 out of the bunch, and still make money.

I do a ton of $1 bin hunting. I only use raw price to weed out my findings but then use 9.8 pricing to decide which books I purchase. Black books are always a good $1 bin buy as getting a 9.8 is very tough so the census is low. IMO if I have a true raw NM candidate and its value is $50 but the 9.8 is $400 then why would I ever sell for $50? I would be looking to get at least $100- $200 for the book or I would slab myself. Why leave money on the table just because someone sold a raw cheap on Ebay?

If its an important book, I ALWAYS buy graded. Back in the late 90s I saved for a copy of ASM #300. The owner of the shop (Literally a real life version of the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. Heavy, Goatee, Ratty Pony-Tail, and a Condescending Attitude) told me it was priced so high because it was in such good condition. Years later I get it graded and it comes back with the dreaded purple label. I was not a happy collector that day (I get he was trying to make a living but I don't have it in me to pull such sleeze-bag stunts) but I learned two things. 1. I got ripped off and 2. This kind of crap wouldn't have happened if the book was already graded.
Yeah, CGC isn't full proof but the chances of having something wrong with a Raw Book is far higher vs a Graded One

It’s odd to me how a book put in plastic could drastically increase the price. We are letting a handful of graders determine the grade of your book. I noticed most RUclipsrs have been spot on determining the grade of their books or at least very close. Pretty soon we aren’t going to need CGC to tell us the grade of our comics especially modern age comics as well as Bronze Age.I get we need them to check Golden Age and Silver Age comics to determine in the book was restored or not but that would be the only use for them for me personally. Weird they feel the need to implement 9.9 grades now. I guess 9.8 is the new 9.6 value or worse yet 9.4 value

Rai is pronounced Rye, if you're wondering. Pre-Unity Valiant, the Jim Shooter/Bob Layton early 90s stuff is awesome AF. The reboot in 2012 with Dino (Dinesh Shamdasan) was incredible too. A shame what happened to Valiant Entertainment after Dino was forced out. I’m hoping to see those 9.8 Valiant books on your eBay page soon

My local comic shop was selling a X-Men #4 (1991) with a 1-inch corner crease for $25 raw. I told her it was worth $5 and she laughed. I obviously disagreed with her, but she said "someone will buy it". Bought a NM one later that day on EBay for $12.
This video is just you trying to convince people that their perfect raw books aren't worth anything and they should sell to you. Ha ha ha ha. Right. Ha ha ha.
There is NO WAY a X-Men 136, perfect raw, would go for only $40. No way at all unless the seller is dumb. It would sell instantly on EBay at that price. It's perfectly liquid at $100+

An X-Men 136 CGC 9.6 just sold for $109 on EBay, I wouldn't pay $100 raw for that book in NM condition, not worth it. If the book is a true 9.8 candidate and the pictures show that, some bidders may risk it and spend a few hundred.

@MintHunterComics: @ryanfindlay845 is correct to mention that "Rai" (as written in English) is pronounced like the Canadian Whiskey "Rye" in Japanese. However, @joeythestuntmaster6210 is incorrect to equate this pronunciation with samuRAI, at least based on the Japanese character written next to the name (although I haven't read the story so perhaps they refer to the badass Rai as a "samurai" in the comic and that is what caused the confusion?). Anyways, "samurai" is correctly written as 侍 and means "one who serves" (the character consists of two parts, a man 人 next to a temple 寺). The Japanese character on the cover of the comic book is clearly not related to the word samurai.
There are several correct pronunciations for the character found on the cover 霊 . Most commonly it is pronounced "rei," as in the compound 幽霊 yuurei meaning "ghost, apparition, etc." Which means that you are kinda correct to pronounce it that way!! 👍 But, it has a ton of pronunciations that have been in use since ancient times.
The earliest compound word I found was 神霊 shinrei , meaning "spirit of a god, or a deceased person's spirit that has become a god," from the Shoku Nihongi (740). But, other early pronunciations included "ryou" in the compound word 死霊 shiryou meaning "the spirit of one who is deceased." (Nihon Ryouiki - compiled 810-824).
The total number of pronunciations I found for this same Japanese character 霊 (in the Ruijuu Myougishou (compiled 11th-12th c.) is 22!! ---- >
chi, tsuchi, chimi, tama, rei, ryou, rou, yoi, mi, miko, mitama, mikage, kannagi, sudama, negau, ayashi, mezurashi, tameshi, tamazaki, tamashii, akiramu, and kami !!
Now you know why Japanese is considered the most difficult language in the world for anyone outside of East Asia! :) And yes, I speak/read/write Japanese, Classical Japanese, Chinese, Classical Chinese, and a few European languages, so I am actually qualified to make that assertion 😉. I am actually the weakest of my multi-lingual friends, one of whom speaks/reads/writes 15 languages! We all agree that attaining fluency in Japanese is truly the most difficult, so don't feel bad about not knowing how to pronounce something in Japanese 😁
