There is a psychology analysis as well on the grader. I submitted 10 copies of Spider-Man 1 silver cover together all of which were professionally pressed and checked and all should’ve been graded 9.6 to 9.8. However if you think about the psychology of it, that graders getting the same book in a full stack do not grade each one the same. He or she became super critical and the bulk of them actually came back at 9.2 to 9.6. Resubmitting several came back at 9.8. What I do now is I do not group any similar identical books. If I have three of one particular book they will go into three different submissions. And I have had several come back that said “finger impression” or such when I know that that was not the case and it was actually the individual removing it from the bag to be graded. So I have now taken to submitting in the next size up bag so it slides out easily.
Very interesting. I submitted four copies of Spider-man 1 Platinum...two came back 9.8 and two came back 9.6. Then I got excited on those so sent in ten more (I had bought 50 copies)...I thought for sure some of those would come back 9.6 if not one or two 9.8's just going on the first submission. Instead I got back seven 9.4's and two 9.2's.
@@kamenliter exactly! There is definitely a psychological aspect to it. I’ve had much greater success, sending in multiple submissions separately, than putting a big stack in together. I usually send in shipments of 10, 20 or 25 once a month but there will never be any identical books in each submission I separate them all out
@@larryl6527 Wish I would have known this before I sent them in! Doh! I’ll have to take a closer look to determine if I should resubmit the remaining 9.4’s. Also none of these (including the 9.8’s) were pressed. For the future, should I have multiple high grades of a book, I’ll definitely send them in separately.
@@kamenliter it’s a bit painful taking them out of their slabs, knowing full well you paid to have it graded but sometimes it’s worth it if there’s a financial incentive.
@@larryl6527 Yes it would be. And I fast tracked them. Not sure if it would be worth it, though, unless they went to a 9.8. That’s probably pretty unlikely. I’ll just be more aware in the future.
Thank you for your post. A lot of perhaps obvious things here that would bring down a grade like staple popping, missing pieces, tears, impact creases and more. Easily seen defects that can't be mitigated would be a sign to keep the book raw, at least for me. The eye opener for me was the submission of book of a similar tier and not mixing tiers. Your example of the Detective comic was interesting. I'll keep it in mind. Best to all.
I prefer the Overstreet grading guide. Why should cgc be the standard grading system, when Overstreet is recognized as the time tested measure. Comics are produced by presses and indifferent operators. Being satisfied with good reading and a nice library of comics soothes the disappointing results of grading. I think that 9.5 and 9.8 should be the top grades. There are no 10s. Paper is ephemeral and so is human perception. You don't grade with a magnifying glass.
Great video! Thanks! Question... regarding the rubber stamping, how does CGC feel about "Not To Be Sold" stamps, on books that were comped to Marvel employees?
Great tips! I have only submitted one book to CGC and luckily got a 9.8 signature edition. I do have quite a few books now that I might submit and I will be referring to this video for the tips.
Was the autograph one that YOU got at a convention? Or did you buy it with a certificate of authenticity? I have several I waited in line to get YEARS ago. Some heavy hitters. But I’m concerned they’d need authentication or risk being hit with lower grades due to writing on the cover… Curious what your experience was.
@DylanMadd if it's not witness by cgc it will always gst a qualified grade. Green label. Inwould keep it raw. Or send it to.csbs. they verify the sig thru a laser and match it up to an archive of sigs
Can you please do a video on gripper holes towards the bottom of the of the pages? I have a ton of comics from late 70s and early 80s, the covers and bindings being near perfect otherwise
I did a prescreen for a lower grade hulk. But a pressing first. Wanted a 5. Came with corner chip... didn't know it would have cut it down that much. Should have taken a picture of it pre sent so I can see t least how the pressing went. I heard the pressing isn't that good.
Legit date-stamps and hand-written pencil or pen marks with date + distributor, coming from a primary retailer (pharmacy, newsstand) are ok. Store stamps from a secondary seller (book stores such as good ole Bonnett's; comic shop resellers), kids writing their names, are definitely a downgrade.
I have a Bloodshot #1(Feb 1993) I am curious about a potential ink misprint variant. The red ink on my chromium cover is not red. Its more of an orange gold. I have looked at other examples of this book, and the red is VERY red. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
Excellent info. I have a couple of nice 8.0ish books with small corner pieces missing (Fear 19 and Marvel Spotlight 4). I’ll have to see if they are too big to send in.
On ebay, the Crowley copy of "Comic Comics"#7 (Fawcett) has a *big* file copy stamping that *defaces* the cover artwork, yet the grade is CGC Universal 9.0...!
@@MintHunterComics I'm reminded of more than ten years ago when I saw an issue of Stars and Stripes Comics (1941) from the Lamont Larson pedigree that achieved a very high grade from CGC, yet there was obvious brown foxing at the upper right of the front cover. Another collector who had a lot more experience than me expressed his surprise as well. It's a mixed bag of inconsistency or possibly a more lenient attitude towards GA in general -- or pedigrees in particular.
Have a beautiful X-Men 101 with a popped staple that crushes the grade from a 7.5 to a 5.5. Honestly though, I really like it because I paid a sweet discount for a book that displays really well.
I heard date stamps don’t affect the geade right? Is this true? If so why do date stsmps not affect the grade but store stamps do? They’re pretty similar.
I think they start with a 9.8 and work down. If they don't find anything to drop the grade, they then look to see if there is anything exceptional about it that warrants it being higher.
Great tips !!! Thank you for the video 👍 I’m definitely going to separate some of books now before submitting . In your opinion do CGC use similar grading ‘standards’ to Overstreet ? I’ve a lower grade Tomb of Dracula 10 with shop stamp and price written on it, the overstreet guide to grading mentions with lower grades that stamps don’t effect grade and are acceptable defects ? Many Thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful! yes they do their own take on the overstreet guide. sometimes they are harsher and sometimes they have even been on occasion more lenient!
Just curious but does anyone here know what kind of negative grade you would get for a comic book that has a very small tear on the cover? Like 1/4 of an inch.
That is some very helpful stuff. The grade groupings you received and the positive results of your resubmission strategies reveal an inherent flaw in the system. The CGC graders, despite having expertise in comic grading ( which is questionable, especially with all the new hiring of late ), fall victim to basic human tendencies; people want to group things in similar or like bunches. Submitting comics for grading feels like a crapshoot at times, but I like your idea of upping the odds in one's favor. Another common defect on Silver/Gold books that really will hammer the grade is any kind of spine tear or split. If you see books on eBay graded as "6.5 FN+ with 2" spine split", think closer to 4.0 VG to avoid the dreaded disappointing unboxing.
Great video. I pressed 13 copies of Marvel Comics Presents 72 9.8 candidates in the same submission and they all came back 9.6 wp no grader notes. They had zero flaws. I have seen 9.8 of this book with color breaking spine ticks. So what did I do wrong?
If getting 9.6s instead of 9.8s will be a big disappointment either psychologically or in terms of FMV difference, consider sending the books to be 9.8 prescreened. No extra charge if they do get the 9.8, and less cost (than slabbing) if they don't. Plus the prescreen may psychologically sway the grader to be a bit more generous on borderline books. And you can always resubmit any rejects that you feel were too harshly graded, without the hassle and additional lost cost of cracking them out of their 9.6 slabs.
Oh boy James. You know, I normally ship my stuff off and say go with God, but now I’m seriously worried about my last 10 books submission. I mailed out uncanny 266, invincible IM 7, ASM 316&601, Inhumans 5, GL 25, GOTG 1, Batman 423, Eternals 1 and a UF4 2nd print. I hosed myself didn’t I? I have yet to submit books to cgc but I got to do it for some of my bigger books so this was informative. Super noob question, when you re submit a book after not getting the grade you wanted when it's clear they missed the mark do you have to pay again or does CGC see the flaw of what they did and do it on their dime? Thanks for another great video!
Hey James or people who see this I have a question if you see this how does a younger person who dosent have a job yet get into comic books my dad once a month maybe will let me get some 4$ dollar books at a not full comic shop but all there good stuff is like 70 but do you have any tips I’ll appreciated a lot
Question; how do you press a comic book that’s inside a polybagged I have a lot of comic books with polybagged how do I press them if I need to do this. Thank you for all your advice.
I came across a book recently missing a top staple .. as in it never had the top staple .. so clearly a manufacturer issue, any thought on that grading?
I've got an Amazing Spider-Man 50 that has no top staple. It doesn't have a hole for the top staple. It was somehow not stapled at the time of printing. I've never sent it in and have always wondered if or how much that would be counted against it.
I have an FF 75 that looks like a 9.2 which I’ve graded a 7 because bottom staple is detached. Now I wonder if it would even be tho high. Yours may be fine because they shouldn’t knock a printer error.
Can you explain what you mean when you said "Don't submit books in the poly-bag."? Are you talking about the standard bag and board that everyone store their books in? If that's what you mean, can you tell me what to submit my books in? I'm ready to make my first submission of 15 books and I'm getting pretty nervous about the entire thing.
Don't worry, regular bags are fine. He's talking about comics that are sold as an "exclusive poly-bagged edition" that have a vertical seam on the back that gets pressed into the comic when books are packed tightly in a box or in a stack.
Pedigree collections only have 4 specific criteria they must meet, and none of them have anything to do with stamps. Some pedigree collections have been notated by a specific marking left by the owner to signify it is/was there’s, but it’s never been a specific stores stamp to my knowledge. It’s usually a personal/unique marking, such as initials or a symbol. A store stamp SHOULD NOT be the sign of a pedigree. I don’t know why you said that. Stamped books have had many many owners, and pedigrees are proven to be complete collections. Pedigrees are defined: 1. Over 1k total books. 2. The vast majority of the collection must be from Silver Age back. 3. Books must mostly be high grade. 4. Must be single owner. Most Stamped books you find in the wild certainly don’t meet 3 or 4.
Staple pop…that’s what I have wrong with my TMNT (mirage) # 1 fifth print. It’s the only thing is see wrong with the book and I swear it was popped when I bought it back in ‘88 or ‘89 I think. The center page tore off the top staple. Thanks for the info!
Two grips I've had with CCS/CGC, sent in NTTs #44 to be pressed and it came back 9.6 with the same pressible defect not pressed out. The other book, Amythist Jem World #1 the Kansas City 35¢ variant got a 9.6 because they said the cover was skewed, and they forgot to label it as the variant I mentioned!
@@MintHunterComics some pressable defects need more attention. Like hydration attention. There was no excuse for the other book all around. Looks like you're still in the same place, thought you moved?!
That last one, and the loooong wait time + risk during shipping makes me not want to submit at all! Especially for a keeper. Just gonna put it in an ultra pro one touch magnetic holder and be done with it!
That’s true about sending the same 2 books. I sent in 2 Wolverine 8s and they both got a 9.4. I also sent in 2 ASM 362s and they both came back 9.4. The books were different conditions.
Have you tried CGC/CCS, pressing service? If so, how was your experience? I’m considering sending some UF4’s and want to get them pressed for the same reasons you mentioned in the video.

Thank you for all this info, helped a ton
Glad to hear it!
Brother, what an insightful video!!! Thank you
Excellent video as always James. Thanks brother 🤘🏼
My pleasure!!
Thanks again for the great tips. Always entertaining and informative.
Glad you found it helfpul!
any writing on covers makes the trash in most collectors eyes... collectors, not dealers/amateur dealers.
Awesome video, very informative I watched it 3X. I’m preparing for my first submission.
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative video. Thank you. Also, How about staining and fixing?
Great video! Thanks! Question... regarding the rubber stamping, how does CGC feel about "Not To Be Sold" stamps, on books that were comped to Marvel employees?
Thanks fort the tips I will look for these in my long box
Great tips! I have only submitted one book to CGC and luckily got a 9.8 signature edition. I do have quite a few books now that I might submit and I will be referring to this video for the tips.
That is awesome!
Another amazingly insightful & very helpful video. Thanks M for the knowledge drop. Appreciate this info.
Can you please do a video on gripper holes towards the bottom of the of the pages? I have a ton of comics from late 70s and early 80s, the covers and bindings being near perfect otherwise
Great video, Very Informative!!
That makes sense. Surprised after a thousand copies wouldn't get that...
great videos man, I'm new to the market and you're helping out
I have a Bloodshot #1(Feb 1993)
I am curious about a potential ink misprint variant.
The red ink on my chromium cover is not red. Its more of an orange gold.
I have looked at other examples of this book, and the red is VERY red.
Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
Hi how are CGC with scratched Acetate covers? where the pages are still are still flawless. Thanks
Wow - just wow
Date stamps aren't as harsh - however they often do bring it down a slight grade
I think they start with a 9.8 and work down. If they don't find anything to drop the grade, they then look to see if there is anything exceptional about it that warrants it being higher.
No they really do have to start with 10 and work down - that's how we rarely rarely rarely (but once in a blue moon) see 9.9's
@@MintHunterComics I'd love to see a video on your theories as to how a comic possibly achieved a 9.9 grade. Your videos are great, thanks!
Thank you for this excellent vlog on CGC grading.👍🏼
Thanks for the heads up brother.
Couldn't agree more with your take on store stamps. Especially when it comes to golden and silver age books.
Agreed - I wish they wouldn't hurt ya for it
Very interesting to hear about how corner tears and stamps are treated at CGC.
Harshly!
Great video as always James.
Thanks for watching
Good tip on submitting similar books together
Glad it was helpful!
can a good dry cleaner get rid of these stamps?
Great video. I pressed 13 copies of Marvel Comics Presents 72 9.8 candidates in the same submission and they all came back 9.6 wp no grader notes. They had zero flaws. I have seen 9.8 of this book with color breaking spine ticks. So what did I do wrong?
It just be like that sometimes I'm afraid! 9.8s are (and should be) extremely difficult to obtain
So you have basically exposed this grading trend is all a scam
Oh boy James. You know, I normally ship my stuff off and say go with God, but now I’m seriously worried about my last 10 books submission. I mailed out uncanny 266, invincible IM 7, ASM 316&601, Inhumans 5, GL 25, GOTG 1, Batman 423, Eternals 1 and a UF4 2nd print. I hosed myself didn’t I? Time to double up and do another go with God after this one! Did that GL 25 cause of you dude!
Nothing wrong with that! I'm sure you'll be fine - I think you'll still get good grades!
This is really useful dude! I don't think they should dock on the stamp! That sucks, I am one of the very few that like's stamps lol. Keep up the content.
I agree!
Seems to me if you like the stamps you should be happy they dock for it atleast when you're buying anyways
😀
I have yet to submit books to cgc but I got to do it for some of my bigger books so this was informative. Super noob question, when you re submit a book after not getting the grade you wanted when it's clear they missed the mark do you have to pay again or does CGC see the flaw of what they did and do it on their dime? Thanks for another great video!
You have to get it re-sent in. -they'll stick by their guns forever - no use fighting against the machine. But this time send it in and get it pressed
Hey James or people who see this I have a question if you see this how does a younger person who dosent have a job yet get into comic books my dad once a month maybe will let me get some 4$ dollar books at a not full comic shop but all there good stuff is like 70 but do you have any tips I’ll appreciated a lot
It used to be quite easy but comics are around $5 a pop right now - my best advise to younguns is get a job! I had 2 jobs at age 11 lol
I have a comic with no staples or holes, its a printer anomaly. Do you get hit hard for this?
Question; how do you press a comic book that’s inside a polybagged I have a lot of comic books with polybagged how do I press them if I need to do this. Thank you for all your advice.
You take it out of the bag. CGV won’t grade it in the bag anyway.
This!
@@danielperkins9347 some polybagged comic books have a card or poster inside the polybagged what do you do then. Thank You for your response.
@@guillermozuniga6600 if it were me I’d put the card in the bag with the comic but on the back of the board so you can see it from behind.
Are you from the Dayton area?! I frequent bonnets bookstore lol
@@adamburkhart4046 Oh yes.....thanks. Now I know what you mean.
If the book has like sweat fingerprints inside like if the glass is pressing on the book I’m supposed to send it back right
Pedigree collections only have 4 specific criteria they must meet, and none of them have anything to do with stamps.
Pedigrees are defined:
It's very possible it just was always like that! dude I SWEAR it's always that only main thing wrong! ugh
Hmmm - seems odd they couldn't press it out - sorry to hear that!
@@MintHunterComics some pressable defects need more attention. Like hydration attention. There was no excuse for the other book all around. Looks like you're still in the same place, thought you moved?!
I have the same problems with coins, especially full steps on Jefferson Nickels. I swear they spin a wheel for grades.
I'll never know why! but it's just always something to avoid!
Have you tried CGC/CCS, pressing service? If so, how was your experience? I’m considering sending some UF4’s and want to get them pressed for the same reasons you mentioned in the video.
Is a 2005 comic ok to submit with current ones?
Happy New Year
always super informative
Why thank you!
Super helpful guide!
Glad it was helpful!
One of the big ones is large color breaking creases
How do you find the list and features of the pedigrees that have been verified by CGC?
Google "CGC peigrees" - they'll give you the full run-down
How much does it typically cost to get 25 modern books graded
you got to wonder why some shops decided to put a massive big stamp on the cover of their comics
Would trading out a staple be considered a reason for CGC to slam you with a purple label?
That similar low grade "infection" is interesting. It's gotta be psychological. Was it the same issue also?
Recap (does not replace actually watching the video)
* Store stamps
* Tiny missing piece(s) of 1 cm. or more
* Staple popped (detached cover at one staple)
* Polybag indentation
* Mixing high grade in with low grades
Great informative video. Kudos!...:)
Glad it helped!
4:44 Empire Comics was legendary in my city, they've been around since the 70's until things went sideways and they closed
That's so sad to hear
