Mate, this video was great! I've held off sending to CGC through fear they would be rejected. I'm in the UK so it's a lot of effort sending them. This is the best cgc video I've ever seen.
I was on cgc and doing a 9.8 pre-screen and saw this video, which I'm glad because I was so wrong about what was allowed. Much appreciated for making this clearer!!!!! Keep up the awesome work.
This was excellent. I learned so much about grading in this 1 recording than in the last 10 years. I didn't completely understand how cgc determined a book is a 9.8 'til now. Thanks for putting this one out.
Thank you so much for making this video. You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for someone to break it down like this. Now I can confidently grade my books better. I always had a feeling I was over grading and now I’m certain of it. Thanks!!!
This is a GREAT video and you explained everything really well. SO many people think that a 9.8 is flawless. Thank you for this video, I added this to my favorites list on my channel. Thumbs up :)
Super helpful. I am thinking I likely have a few more 9.8s among my Bronze and Copper books than I thought just a few hours ago. 😎 Really appreciate you doing the heavy lifting on the murky world of grading.
I still feel there’s some inconsistency with the grading. I’ve sent in books that get 9.2, 9.4 and 9.6 with what you’ve shown as 9.8s. Looking at the graders notes, there was hardly anything letting me know why this received the grades they got. So it’s really hard to understand what’s correct and what’s not.
This was an amazingly helpful video. I havent collected comics since my teen years in the 90s (only purchasing trades now and then) and have started to get back into collecting, so this is a new world for me and really helps me understand what to look for. Thank you!
This was the video I was looking for! I have some popular books that have binary tears and I thought it was a deal breaker, but turns out it's still possible to get a 9.8!
You took good time and care on the details, which is commendable. I used to submit sports cards to PSA, SGC, and BGS decades ago. You are correct on declaring the subjectivity of the process. It does come down to the persons grading the item. I have a few 70's issues I plan on submitting to CGC, but simply for keeping in my personal collection. I'm gladly subbing to your channel. Please do continue to focus on the truths of the industry...and the fun it does bring to you and us.
Great rundown video. The subjective nature of grading is tough but you definitely help make it a little more scientific. Like many, I've had 9.8s that look like 10.0s in every way. Maybe someday I'll get a 9.9 or 10.
Best video I’ve watched breaking down allowable defects. I’m walking away feeling that many of the 9.8s shown could of easily been 9.6s. It’s all on the graders discretion
One of the most informative videos out there on this. Thanks for sharing. extremely helpful for first timers like myself who will be sending in books to CGC soon.
Great vid. I learned a lot, I have a lot of keys I am gonna start submitting to cgc, and these eased my mind. Thanks for the knowledge and the hard work to make this video.
Just found your channel and this video was awesome man. Like many have mentioned, I'm also looking to submit my first batch of comics to CGC for the first time and have been looking to as much research as possible before I do. This has been one of the most helpful in that process. Subscribed!
Hey thank you this was the video I needed to see because this industry is getting crazy with the cgc style thank you for pointing out everything I need to know you're amazing
Actually there is a video cgc has, I believe on their site, on the grading process and how they arrive at the conclusion for the grading. The whole process is explained in great detail. I will try to provide a link.
Super helpful. Working on my grading skills myself as much as I can. The mid grade is what’s tough for me to see where things kind of fall for older books
Great information. I have a nice copy of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire #1 that I’ve always wanted to get slabbed but was worried about color rub down the spine. I might have to take a chance on it.
This is a great video. I haven't been sending comic with binding tears because I thought they would be backed pretty hard tho last few years of comics they all seem to have them.
Great information thanks. You did a great job with this. My problem to is defining fine and very fine. Maybe you could a similar video on that? Thanks again.
Great video the two defects that I personally don't consider ever achieving a 9.8 is multiple spine ticks/color break and color Rub I consider those a 9.6 or lower, if I'm paying a lot of money to get that 9.8 book I always buy from someone on eBay that allows returns as if I get a 9.8 book that I paid 200, $300 or more for and it has either those defects I'm returning the book I don't consider it personally a 9.8 on the flipside I've gotten a lot of 9.8 books that are virtually Flawless and should be higher grades so at the end of the day there's low 9.8 grades and high 9.8 grades it's all what you're comfortable with what you collect if you're a 9.8 collector. Another great note a lot of books that were graded pre-2008 9.4 and 9.6 we're graded very strict back in the day I actually purchased some I've seen in person at conventions and have cracked open resubmitted and got it back graded 9.8
As I learn more about what is allowable and/or not. I have come to realize that the final deciding factor if the HF(human factor). We can send in what we believe is a perfect book, but it will all depend on the individual grader. Good Luck.
Great video, very informative and helpful. When you’re determining market value for CGC graded comics and books. what in your opinion is the best source for that data? Thank you.
Depends on the book…if it’s a modern book with lots of sales definitely eBay recent sold listings, if it’s a more rare book I look at GPanalysis, cover price, and eBay to look at recent sales and then also check out current listed prices…this market is so hot many saw sources are behind in updating so you gotta look at the whole picture 👍
I was wondering what book should i try to get first cause i got 6 grail books to get and they are X-Men#1,Hulk#181,AMS#129,TMNT#1,Cerebus#1 and Superman Batman#6 German Variant.
This was very helpful for finding key back issues on eBay. I always ask for plenty of pictures that cover the whole comic book. I don't just settle for auction photos already uploaded, per your advice from another video. I'd rather pay the 9.8 slab than get a raw copy and throw money away. But now, I know what to look for. I've always passed on copies with that spine color rub, but now I know that it is negligible. Although I've seen 9.6 slabs that I swear looked like a 9.8. Given it doesn't have interior issues, I wonder why the "judgement" of the book can differ so much with a 9.8 that can look like a 9.4.
The only I guess do you think I've ever seen on any of my Comics is sometimes when they come in the mail they have those little white lines on the side that look like creases kind of and sometimes the very two tips on each end will be slightly bent
Great video. I was wondering why my UF4 had a 9.8 when it had a color rub... So it's a negligible defect. I have wizard world young avengers #1 cgc 9.5 and that book is flawless like no handling or manufacturing defect, looks like a Gem Mint to me.
I feel better now about my spine rub books. I was noticing it a lot with DC comics that I’ve been reading from 2010 (yeah I’m a little behind in my reading) especially with card stock covers. Now I won’t feel so sad - it was starting to bother me even knowing that I would never submit these filler books for grading.
Is the age of the book in relation to condition taken into consideration? Ie) 2020 with a spine tick = 9.8 vs 1960 with multiple spine ticks or other defects = 9.8
I always peel mine halfway so I can get the code, but the sticker remains intact. According to Regie Collects, stickers like that would be noted on the label, but would not affect the grade. I'm still waiting for someone else to confirm if this is truly the case.
Great video and shows up clear on camera. Question, were these books sent for ccs pressing? My general sense was if sent for ccs pressing they would be more generous with flaws then if just sent in like that straight. Maybe thats not the case?
I've been curious about what defects are allowed. I bought the new future state the next batman 1 minimum logo with him revealing his face and on the bottom corner the cut was a rough off set cut and I been very curious about the grade. Other then the off corner cut its perfect...
Mate, this video was great! I've held off sending to CGC through fear they would be rejected. I'm in the UK so it's a lot of effort sending them. This is the best cgc video I've ever seen.
Probably my favorite RUclips video right now about comics. Very insightful and helpful when we’re out there hunting for potential 9.8s. Awesome stuff!
Thank you!
I was on cgc and doing a 9.8 pre-screen and saw this video, which I'm glad because I was so wrong about what was allowed. Much appreciated for making this clearer!!!!! Keep up the awesome work.
This is great stuff, as a new collector it's hard to know where to begin with cgc submissions. But this helps a ton! Happy New Year!
Happy new year!

Really appreciate you doing the heavy lifting on the murky world of grading.
You are the best my brother I appreciate all your wisdom and advice keep on helping the community like you do
As someone will be submitting to cgc fir the first time this is very helpful in selecting the books I will send. Thanks!
This is the best video on this subject I've seen.
It's funny as these defects would kill a sports card grade
Yeah they’re way more strict huh? Probably because it’s one tiny card and not a whole book...makes sense
Thanks man. Been collecting for quite a while, and this helps clear up my understanding of how some defects affect grading
Very informative, thank you for doing this. Now I need to go through my supposed "9.8s" again before I consider submitting anything.
Thanks for the great information. Great video! I look forward to many to come. Have a good one!

Well done bud. I know your info to be 100% accurate based off my own submissions. Your rub and tick portions were especially insightful.

Long awaited / Much requested -- no joke! really informative!
great info thanks again! going to be doing my first submission this month and this will help me loads
Great stuff! Not a new collector but newer to the grading part so this helps immensely
This video helped clear up a lot. Thank you
nice info about that bindery tears! iam glad thats an allowable defects!
Amazing ....I've sold a lot that would prob have been 9.8...but this vid has saved me selling more. Awesome.

Ton of great information. Spine rub has stopped me from submitting several books. I have to rethink those
Good stuff. More like this. I'm about to start submitting and this helps. A lot more is allowable for a 9.8 that I thought.
Glad it helped!
Another great video......on point with topic discussions so far!
I had wondered if color rub on the spine would completely ruin chances for a 9.8. Great video, thanks!
Explains a lot of what I’ve seen! I’ve bought lower grades that look great but may be hard to see through the case.
Super helpful. Working on my grading skills myself as much as I can. The mid grade is what’s tough for me to see where things kind of fall for older books
Very well done , learned a ton of applicable information . Thanks!
Great information. I have a nice copy of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire #1 that I’ve always wanted to get slabbed but was worried about color rub down the spine. I might have to take a chance on it.
I’ve got a ASM 300 with less color rub than that and it was cited as the reason for it being a 9.6 no ticks or anything. Absolutely perfect.
Well put together, very informative video, thank you
Great content. Preparing to send my first big submission and I’m stressing. This video was a big help Bry.
Super informative. Great video👍

Great overview and details.
I have a crain venom 7 that came back a 9.8 despite one very clear color breaking spine tic
Been waiting for this one! Thanks for the info 👍 😀
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the informative video. How about non-sharp/blunted corners?
That can really hurt the grade depending on how bad. They measure it
Very informative, thank you for sharing. I just subscribed

Can a small discoloration at the edge of the bottom or top still be a 9.8?
Do you mean color rub? I guess it depends how big and what kind of. Discoloration

could you also check if removing the sticker from the free digital versions change the value of a comic?
Yup, I’ll try to get to the bottom of that!
I always peel mine halfway so I can get the code, but the sticker remains intact. According to Regie Collects, stickers like that would be noted on the label, but would not affect the grade. I'm still waiting for someone else to confirm if this is truly the case.
Great analysis. Thanks homie
what about those small holes at bottom of pages - not sure where they come from (mayby newsstand?). Those holes mean no 9.0, correct?
If all of the books in the run have it they let it slide...only defects are deducted so if it was manufactured intentionally like that no deduction
Great video and shows up clear on camera. Question, were these books sent for ccs pressing? My general sense was if sent for ccs pressing they would be more generous with flaws then if just sent in like that straight. Maybe thats not the case?
The graders wouldn’t know if it was pressed by ccs or not...but no none of these were pressed by ccs
