  • As a creative person, should you quit social media? Can you even, or would it be social and career suicide?
    I went for 30+ days without social media, and here's what I learned.

    Social media is toxic and a total waste of life. I just left everything except RUclips and Rumble as I use them to host videos for my blog. I got fed up with the evil censorship going on, along with many other issues.

    I quit Facebook almost 2 months ago because I just got fed up with all the "perfect life" photos, political rants, and other drama. People were telling me I should try taking breaks at one time, so I thought "Ok. Maybe I'll feel better after a week or two." After I came back, I realized that the scrolling and depressed feelings didn't go away. I just decided to delete my FB account for good and I can't say that I regret it.

    I find social media in general to be a total waste of time. Scrolling for hours to see stuff and people that you really don’t care about and they really don’t care about you 99 percent of the time.
    What woke me up to it was a video that simply asked to name the last 5 videos that you had watched “TikTok’s” and I honestly couldn’t remember them, I had to go back and re watch them cause I had no idea what they were. At that moment I knew it was silly and a waste of time. The only platform I’d recommend to anyone would be utube and that’s only because a lot of people post really useful content.

    Also hitting my 30-day mark without social media myself and feeling so good. I heard the term "outrage porn" to describe all the toxicity that the algorithm likes to push out. Just like you, I never knew that I was feeling negatively due to social media, I was always assigning blame to other things. Feels like I disappeared and it's peaceful and quiet here. Clarity is a good word.

    You've articulate exactly the way I've felt about this subject for some time now. Thanks for sharing! I've limited my FB to Saturday mornings only(for an half hour or less), and it seems to be working well so far. After a week of not being on Social media I soon realize that I missed NOTHING. I've also set a new rule for myself to only share something if it's for business purposes. I don't like sharing news articles because somehow they always end up in a debate which then sucks the energy right out of me and leaves me feeling irritated. Instagram doesn't seem to effect me as negatively as FB for some reason. I think it's because it's harder to share news articles on Instagram that could potentially take me down a rabbit hole of doom and senseless debating.

      Hey Alex - thanks so much for the comment. Glad to hear it resonated! I'm happy to report that after 8 months, I'm still experiencing all of the benefits of having quit, my ability to focus and do great work in less time with less stress is improving steadily, and my work shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, I'm busier than ever with rewarding work, and I see no reason for that to change. I'm much more focused on doing excellent work and delighting my collaborators, and that is what's paying dividends and creating ever more opportunities.
      Here's wishing you much success, clarity, and happiness in your work!

    It can be useful--but . . . There is something that will impede your advancement as I told my own subscribers. Addiction to social media. Now social media can be a good thing for advertising your business, YT channel or the like. But having your entire existence based on it is not. First there is the unhealthy aspect of comparing yourself to other profiles which usually aren't nearly as stellar in real life as they are on the front page. Then there is the aspect where your validation is being sought from people you rarely talk to in real life--if ever. Not to mention the constant quest of follows and likes also drops minute amounts of dopamine in your system literally physically making you addicted to social media. Which leads to later anxiety increase and depression. But also--if you are spending all your time on your iPhone then you aren't advancing yourself. Think about how much more you could learn about stock trading if you cut social media 90% down? That's my end point. It should be a very small part of your life not the center of it. Hope that helps someone out there---Charles

    I've been thinking about quitting social media for a while now. It's a huge waste of time not to mention the negative effects on your mental health. The only thing that stops me is that I use Facebook for my creative business. It's really hard to decide if I need to completely quit.

    • @AdrianEllis
      @AdrianEllis  Год назад

      I hear you! Well, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. You could make a plan to slowly stage down, remove things that don't work, keep what does. Maybe you only use your FB Business account, and not a personal profile. Slowly migrate customers to an email list based business - there's lots of evidence to support that this is a great way to run a biz and safer as you're not at the mercy of the platforms (algorithms, changes to rules, downtime, etc). Use something like Hootsuite, Socialbee, or Buffer to put a bit of separation between you and the platform - use a more passive way of creating content that goes out automatically so you don't spend too much time in FB etc. It's tough - a balance between there being some opportunities by using the platforms for sure, but making sure it doesn't affect you negatively because of your use.

    I’m a bit late to the video 😂 but I think social media can be used in two ways even utube. you can either be a consumer, scroll endlessly through peoples content who you don’t know or don’t even care about or you can create. If you are consuming nothing and only creating content the apps can’t affect you at all if you are successful on there then it can only do good. The issue is 99.9% of us create nothing and are the consumers. I don’t use the apps anymore because I can’t help myself I get bored and I start scrolling. I advise for everyone to quit social media your life will be far better.

    Great Stuff, I left all of the platforms and focusing on the email list. Has your email list grown since leaving social media?

    • @AdrianEllis
      @AdrianEllis  2 года назад

      Great to hear! TBH I've not yet made the time to really focus on the mailing list. It's partly that I've been very (and happily) busy with composing work, and also because I'm still trying to figure out where I want to put my time and energy. It's still an unsolved thing in my brain. In the meantime I'm playing with using Social Bee, which seems to act like a buffer between you and social media. I like pre-planning and batch creating posts - focusing more on the creative act of content making vs the external metrics focused thing. Another experiment!
      How have you found leaving socials and focusing on your list? Upsides, downsides?

    • @thekeikoprojectdocumentary
      @thekeikoprojectdocumentary 2 года назад

      @@AdrianEllis Awesome keep experimenting and let me know. I told my followers on all my platforms that I was leaving and to sign up to the email list. A lot signed up and now I can see who are my real supporters. It feels great to get out of that FAKEWORLD and have a lot of time to create. Social media can be great to spread awareness, but the negative effects are way too strong and it's full of fake people.

  • @rosecampion4337
    @rosecampion4337 Год назад

    Yes, but how to get people on your email list if you aren’t posting on social media? How would people find you?

    • @AdrianEllis
      @AdrianEllis  Год назад

      Fair and good question. Now, I'm not an expert in this field and haven't tested these strategies, but from what I've learned researching and taking some courses on this, there are a few methods. First is having a great website where you really work the SEO, so it ranks well and attracts your ideal clients. Getting them on an email list usually happens with the offer of some kind of free, low-cost (to you) but valuable (to them) "lead magnet". It seems that blogging regularly on your topic of expertise/niche can help ranking and drive more traffic. You can also do the same on RUclips, if you are good on camera, or with podcasts if you're good in that area. In short - you're "pull marketing" by putting out regular, targeted, and valuable content to attract potential clients/customers. Then of course you can do paid ads on many platforms.
      Of course, there's also the idea that it doesn't have to be all-or-nothing, nuclear option. Just cut out or down on social media that's personal - ie. doom scrolling etc. and focus only on using it just for pure business means. Try using a program like Hootsuite or SocialBee to put a buffer between you and the platforms.
      This is hugely simplified and all of this will take research, time, and effort. But, it is possible. Just remember, people ran successful businesses before social media, and nowadays, doing things differently can actually be a big advantage!
      Wishing you good luck and success!

    There is one thing better that you can do for your well-being ‘quit alcohol’

    • @AdrianEllis
      @AdrianEllis  2 года назад

      I had an interesting convo with a good friend the other day about how differently our brains experienced things. Specifically: I was going on about how amazing 5 HTP is for me - a wonderful little anxiety reducer that's like a mini-mind massage. He said it produced a near panicked state in him!
      To your point - I recently stopped drinking, and for me, it's had a small effect in improving my sleep, plus I'm losing some weight. But in terms of overall impact, the benefit of quitting social media FAR outstripped that of alcohol. For someone else, it might be the reverse! So, I wouldn't say one is better than the other - it depends on the person. Try both!
      I found that 5 HTP was a game changer in terms of making it easier to stop drinking, because it almost replicates that "warm bath" feeling of that first beer, but without any of the side effects. I started by taking 50mg when I stopped working for the day, and it was something that took the edge off. Two weeks later, I started to forget to take it (as there was no pleasure ritual like there is w/ beer - because, well, yum), and I got through the behavioural reset phase pretty painlessly.
