One of my favorite songs of all time. This show was epic in 1987 (33 years ago). I had read Billy sunk 2.5 million dollars of his own money to do six free concerts in two cities back then. US and Russia relations were at a high after this event. Thanks Billy for being an ambassador for music and America !!

Um, wrong. President Ronald Wilson Reagan brought down the Iron Curtain without firing a shot. Gorbachev demanded President Reagan take SDI off the table. President Reagan refused. Gorbachev blinked, and the Iron Curtain fell by President Reagan furnishing the Mujahideen in Afghanistan the Stinger missiles that defeated and wore out the Russian occupation of Afghanistan that was the fundamental cause for the fall of the Iron Curtain.

I love Billy Joel but I have to say John Denver did 11 concerts in the USSR in 1984. He opened up Russia to Western musicians after a long gap. Also recorded It's About Time, sorry song was What Are We Making Weapons For, with Russian, Alexsander Gradsky. Both John and Billy did a lot to mend Russian/USA relations.

I'm not sure there's much serious guitar playing going on in this song, admittedly. He has two other guitarists doing the heavy lifting. But I have seen him giving it a good workover in other songs, e.g. No Man's Land, We Didn't Start the Fire.
This is my favorite Billy Joel song. Great energy, lyrics and sound. Perfect.

I watched this concert in USSR broadcasted on TV. 1987 and Perestroika was wonderful times. USSR opened doors for Western rock music artists. TV and radio programs became less censored. Billy Joel was one from first guests from the West. Then there was Pink Floyd and Scorpions in Moscow.

The first time Billy Joel played Moscow, the KGB were everywhere in the crowd and the audience was quiet. Billy screamed "turn out the lights!" over and over, then finally overturned his piano. Only then did the KGB turn down the lights and let the people enjoy the show.
