Finally! This is unquestionably the most underrated Billy Joel song ever. Any given person can argue which is BEST, but this one deserved so much more respect than it gets.
@@ducksoff7236 In any setting you want, toss out the question "Billy Joel's five best songs?" and see how often this one gets mentioned. I figure that's largely driven by "classic rock" radio that plays the same dozen or so songs (which are good songs!) incessantly and this one once every couple of months. But whatever the cause, I seldom see anyone peg it as one of his best.
Christie Brinkley was his “Uptown Girl”, a former Sport’s Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover model (still makes guest appearances) and is the tall blonde walking around the edges of the studio with one of their children.
Loved growing up with Billy Joel. This song came out when I was 14. Rob Squad: Christie Brinkley was Billy Joel's wife at this time. She's in the video here a few scenes. She was the star of Joel's video Uptown Girl. And if you've seen the movie Vacation, she was the blonde in the red sports car and swimming buddy of Clark Griswald.
Christie is the beautiful blonde with a baby in her arms. The baby is their only shared child, Alexa Ray Joel born in 1985. She's now older than Billy and Christie were in this video.
Edit: Former Boss was permanently angry @ Joel b/c he & his bro were extremely good friends with the bass player in this video - Doug Stegmeyer. Go Google Doug.
One of my favorite Billy Joel songs. Such meaningful lyrics, gets stuck in your head. You have yet to do my ultimate favorite...."Only The Good Die Young". You will NOT be able to sit still.
@@ellessandraramsay1841 Not trying to be a dick here but there was no "onwards" after River Of Dreams. At least not as far as pop/rock goes and only a classical for piano, instrumental album that he wrote but did not play on himself. I agree River Of Dreams was not his best album but there were still some decent enough songs on there all the same.
Here are a few Billy Joel songs you should react to before his concert: New York State Of Mind, Only The Good Die Young, For The Longest Time, You May Be Right, and Honesty.
I’ve always loved Billy Joel ever since I was little and heard Moving out - Anthony’s Song (my name is Anthony lol). But this is one of my favorites as well, and the video is awesome. I can just imagine hanging out in the streets of NYC on a hot summer day, and suddenly having an unplanned Billy Joel concert just appear before me!
OPEN THE WINDOW…WE ARE DOING TO DANCE!!! A..1..A..2…A.123…💃🏻🕺 Billy’s bride Christine Brinkley( at that time) and his daughter Alexa are in the video. Love this song! Made me smile😊❤️
A great, but sad song of Billy Joel's is Goodnight Saigon. It's about the Vietnam War and how the boys changed from before and after going to war. It's really a quintessential song from Billy.
If you're going to react to Billy Joel on Veterans day, it should've been "Goodnight Saigon" (don't know if you tried and got blocked) - Happy Veterans Day to all veterans.
Going to put this one out there again, because I'm hoping y'all will check this out when you have a chance: Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind (from Old Grey Whistle Test)". It is live, it is amazing, you get up-close camera shots of his piano playing, and the saxophone player is also incredible. I have been watching y'all almost from the beginning, so I think I can say pretty confidently that you both would love it. :)
Amber & Jay, here are some other great song by Billy Joel to react to: "New York State of Mind", "The Stranger", "Only the Good Die Young", "Honesty", "You May Be Right", "Zanzibar", "Sleeping with the Television On", and "Pressure".
I totally agree with you when you say you have to watch the video to really enjoy Billy Joel. Please go back and watch the video for Scenes From An Italian Restaurant! I promise, you won't regret it. Amber will love the extra horn solos and the energy will amaze you. It is the concert in Long Island.
Yes, I agree. This song and "This Is The Time' from the same album are two of my favorites from him. I highly recommend that they give it a reaction also.
He came to Auckland back in December of 2022 and this was his opening number for the show. A fantastic night for me. This is probably my favourite song of his. This and My Life. Great reaction.
LOVE THIS TUNE!! There's NOT a bad BILLY JOEL tune!! He was married to supermodel, Christie Brinkley from '85 to '94 and they had one child: with whom you see her walking around with in this video (Alexa Ray Joel). ENJOY THE CONCERT, YOU-TWO!! Wave at me when you drive through Dallas! HUGS!
That's what happened to me back in the mid 80's. I can remember he started the show with this song. I've probably seen him a half dozen times since. Every show is great!
His Ex wife is Super Model Christie Brinkley, and she is in the background of this video holding their daughter. So happy you will be able to see Billy live. Wait until he sings Piano Man, and how the entire crowd will sing so loud it's amazing. His sho0ws at MSG are said to be like sitting in a giant Livingroom with 19,000 friends. You will have a great time. As always Thanks for the Smiles
I've always loved Billy Joel. I've been enjoying his music for almost 42 years. I grew up on Billy Joel. He's such a wonderful songwriter, too. He just lifts my spirits anytime I hear his music playing. Jay and Amber, I know you'll truly enjoy the concert you're planning to attend! One excited for you both. More Billy Joel songs: 1. "An Innocent Man"/1983 2. " Leave A Tender Moment Alone"/1984 3.. "Only The Good Die Young"/1978 4. " You're Only Human (Second Wind)/1985 5. "And So It Goes"/1990
Jay/Amber, you'll LOVE his "The Stranger", "All About Soul", "Only The Good Die Young" and "She's Always A Woman" !!!! edit- his album "The Stranger" is in my top 5 of all-time!! Christie Brinkley is the blond woman in the room in the beginning holding their daughter.
"Piano Man", "A Matter Of Trust", and "River Of Dreams" are my three favorite Billy Joel songs. I really hope that I'll be able to see him at some point in my life...wish concerts weren't so expensive; I miss the 70's and 80's--when I could actually afford concert tickets!
8:58 when you said "time capsule" my jaw dropped because that's also what I loved about this video, and video's like it. I was a teenager when this came out, so seeing some of the people felt a bit like I was re-visiting a past that I seem to miss more with each passing year.
Christie Brinkley was his ex, and she appeared in the video holding their daughter Alexa Ray who was named after Ray Charles! I'm so excited you get to see him (and Stevie.) That is gonna be one amazing show and I'm just thrilled for you. Y'all totally deserve it.
This was filmed in the East Village in Manhattan. You can see Billy's then-wife Christie Brinkley near the beginning with blond hair and a black tank top holding their baby daughter. The street crowd is a good cross-section of mid-80s New Yorkers, with the office workers in suits, the folks sitting out on the sidewalk because the apartments are so hot, the Madonna wannabes, the day care kids being walked around the block with the rope, the Guardian Angel neighborhood security volunteer in the red beret.
😊Great pick guys❤ Amber you mentioned his wife Christie Brinkley (huge super model) just after she walked into the room with the band holding their baby daughter Alexa Ray Joel who is now a singer/song writer/pianist herself. I was lucky enough to see Billy and Stevie in Los Angeles this year!! Amazing show of course. You will for sure FAN GIRL out while witnessing 2 living legends still doing there thing at such a high level.....especially Stevie. I am so excited for you.
The Longest Time-Billy Joel. J/A love for you to react to this beautiful song by him. Without ruining the surprise, you haven’t reacted to a similar song yet which was a top 5 music charter in the mid 80s. Thanks again for reacting to BJ his catalogue is great and deep!
That’s his wife, Christie Brinkley, with their child in the video. She was the most famous model in the world. You may recognize her as the hot girl in the Ferrari in National Lampoon’s Vacation.
I remember buying my first Billy Joel album, "The Stranger," when I was in sixth grade. He is such an amazing artist. I can't even think of how many songs he has written and sung throughout my life. He also has songs that are not as well known but just as good. Thanks for sharing!
I have seen Billy in concert nine times (the first when he was touring in support of his 52nd Street album) and he has never failed to perform a great show. He always showed that he appreciated his audience, going so far as having a second piano on a riser on the back of the stage so those in the “cheap seats” behind the stage got to see him up close while performing. If you want to see a great early performance, seek out “Billy Joel Tonight- from Connecticut” and watch all of the songs from the show. My two favorite are “Handball”, a mostly instrumental song that I don’t believe he ever recorded for an album, and “Prelude/Angry Young Man”, a song from his Turnstiles album where he displays some amazing piano playing. This is a link to that RUclips video…. ruclips.net/video/BgyyFmDZrFA/видео.html
As I am sure know, there are so many more Billy Joel songs for you to react to. A few I would recommend are Only the Good Die Young, She’s Got A Way, and New York State of Mind (a classic!)
An excellent song choice. Obscure for everyone except us die hard Billy Joel fans. Thanks for playing this, as it's one of my favorites and rarely played on the radio.
Words cannot express how much I love Billy. I'd love to see him live in concert; so happy for/jealous of you guys! I strongly recommend that you do a reaction to his "Downeaster Alexa." It has a lot of instruments that you don't usually hear on his songs, or in rock songs in general.
The man has so. Many. Great. Songs. I think he might be the greatest popular songwriter in America. Have a hard time thinking of anyone else on his level.
You still haven't reacted to a live performance. Quintessential Billy Joel live from his hey day would be "New York State of Mind" 1978 from the Grey Whistle Test, "The Stranger" live from 1977, "Good Night Saigon" from 1982.
I never heard a Billy Joel song that I didn't like but I have to say this is my favorite by the way he was married to Christie Brinkley and she is in this video holding their daughter , I think you only see them twice. My favorite album is The Stranger every song is fabulous
"He always puts you in a good mood". No, he always makes you feel, whether that's joy, sadness or anger. Check out "Goodnight Saigon" for a really moving song that he wrote with the request and blessing of a veteran's group. He didn't serve but had friends who did, and he had mad respect for them and what they went through.
Personally, this is my favorite Billy Joel song. Another that captures his struggle with BiPolar Disorder is "I Go To Extremes." You should check that out next
The 80s was such a magical time. Nearly every week there was a new number one by a different artist. Fun, fashion and music was on the way up the entire decade.
When people saw Billy playing guitar they were shocked - he was the Piano Man! He laughed about it, saying he only could play some rhythm chords and doubted if his guitar was even plugged in!
you have to listen to Billy Joel New York State of mind from old gray whistle test video he wears sunglasses and smokes a cigarette and looks really cool. I think you’ll love it
man, i grew up on Billy Joel. ive not heard this song in a VERY long time. i was able to sing along none the less. You guys are going to be in for a real treat, he is amazing live!
I loved this album. That and the piano man album. This album he did a few duets. Like My Baby Grand with ray charles. In this video you see his wife Christie Brinkley with their baby Alexis. She was one of the original super models from the seventies. This is one of my fav songs from this album. This Is the Time is another fav from this album. Beautiful romantic ballad. Code of Silence with Cyndi lauper is another chilling song. Enjoy seeing billy Joel. I’ve seen him in concert twice. He really knows how to play to the audience. I know you will enjoy it.
I just Stevie and Billy in concert last night here in Minneapolis; great show but I do wish he had included this song in his set list as it is one of my favorites. A similar song is "All About Soul" but the song I think you should check out the most is "Goodnight Saigon." It is about the experiences of soldiers in the Vietnam War.
Definitely one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. I was 7 when it came out, and even then I knew how incredibly cool this video was. I would love for you to react to "Piano Man"!
They have and it was one of Billy's first ones that they reacted to and I think that it might even have been the very first. Although they were saying during this reaction that it is no longer up now though.
@@seanscanlon9067 Ha! I just jumped right into the video and missed what they said in the beginning. Thanks for pointing that out. I hope they can reupload it!
I grew up listening to Billy Joel along with so many from the era. I actually won an album from my local radio station called "glass houses". I don't know what ever happened to it but I just love Billy. He is an amazing talent you should do a reaction to "scenes from an Italian restaurant" if you haven't already.
Have seen Billy numerous times and not been disappointed once. He puts on a PHENOMONAL SHOW! He has such a great catalogue of music to draw upon and it makes for a great concert and Stevie Nicks will make it an all time great double bill. Only one time that I have seen Billy has there been any other act on the bill.
Billy Joel has been a staple part of my music listening over the years , the man is a genius . So many brilliant songs. An Innocemt Man is well worth checking out , a real gem......
The video was done as a tribute to the Beatles with cameos from Paul, ,Ringo and George, in different spots of the video. This song is one of my favorites of his !! His wife at the time was Christie Brinkley. Great song thank you!!
Billy Joel's then-wife Christie Brinkley appears in the video holding their baby daughter Alexa.
Saw him in 89 on that tour, opened with this, was surprised seeing him playing guitar on a song!
Finally! This is unquestionably the most underrated Billy Joel song ever. Any given person can argue which is BEST, but this one deserved so much more respect than it gets.
Also, I'm always a sucker for "random people breaking into dancing in the street" scenes.
Confused at how one of his most popular songs is "underrated"........

"Allentown " is a great one from Billy Joel about working-class America. It reminds me of John Mellencamp's music. Great reaction ❤

@@PatrickExcelsior "Leningrad", too.
was gonna say they must note have heard that or Pressure, or Allentown
Allen Town. And yep PRESSURE too
@@matthewteague623 I love Leningrad, one of my favorites.
Personally, this is my favorite Billy Joel song. Another that captures his struggle with BiPolar Disorder is "I Go To Extremes."
You should check that out next
This was awesome because the band all played each other's instruments. Billy looks bad ass playing a guitar.
You're missing one of his greatest. New York State of Mind (Old Grey Whistle Test) is one great live performance. It has a sax solo!!!!!
you have to listen to Billy Joel New York State of mind from old gray whistle test video he wears sunglasses and smokes a cigarette and looks really cool.
@@tomdonadio5518 Yeah I know what you mean and have done the same myself in the past, when moving things forward to the actual video itself.
An underrated rocker of his, nice guys, you Rock! Billy is awesome, enjoy! 🎵🎹🎤🎸🎶
The lady holding the baby in the studio is his ex wife, fashion model/Vacation actor Christie Brinkley, and the baby is their daughter, Alexa Ray.
And Alexa is all grown up now and a singer/piano player in her own right. Every once in a while she'll join her dad on stage.
Alexa's middle name "Ray" was in honor of Ray Charles, per BJ
Billy Joel has been a staple part of my music listening over the years , the man is a genius . So many brilliant songs. An Innocemt Man is well worth checking out , a real gem......
How ironic……was just reading a story about Billy and his family, adopting a French Bulldog.
Even more reason to love Billy Joel.
This is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. Can't go wrong with Miami 2017 either.
This is the best advice for a long-term relationship that I’ve ever heard in a song. It’s kept my marriage going for over 30 years
I grew-up in the 70s and 80s with Billy Joel. Absolute genius. So much fun, too.
The video was done as a tribute to the Beatles with cameos from Paul, ,Ringo and George, in different spots of the video. This song is one of my favorites of his !! His wife at the time was Christie Brinkley. Great song thank you!!
