- Hi guys, do you dread painting spindles? Today I just may put the FUN back into it with the #SlapItON paint technique that I've been using for years!
When I first started painting furniture -- spindles were a nightmare. I hated painting them. Whether they were chair spindles, legs on a piece of furniture or ANY type of rounded piece with any type of detail, I dreaded it. It never turned out smooth. It always looked messy. I always ended up with brush marks.
Well, I'm so excited about today’s makeover and sharing this technique with you. My sister Andrea requested me to do this video.
When she saw me painting spindles on another makeover, she was thoroughly amused and impressed... her words not mine! She said she's NEVER seen anyone do it like this.

This is how I had instinctual started painting my chair spindles. But I felt so ridiculous while doing it, I started googling to see if there was a more "professional" method, and came across your video. Thank you for confirming that I'm actually doing it the right way! LMAO the Slap Method is a great name btw
I LOVE the way you share your techniques with us! Thank you!!!
I just tried this and it works so well!! I was beyond skeptical initially but gave it a shot and I'm so glad I did. Saved me a ton of time and the result was amazing! Thanks for the video! Great work! 🙂
OMG 😯 girlfriend!!! You are a freakin genius!!!! I've lost count how many times I've sanded down these Queen Anne legs on this table I'm doing & tried every technique I've read about. This is the only one that has worked!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Yaaay! I'm super happy it works for you! :)
Fantastically simple and effective, thank you for sharing it!!
Best method I've seen! Works like a charm and super quick 👍
OMG! I found this video a couple months ago, sort of applied it to table legs - not the greatest idea in that case - but I just finished an old chair and this technique worked AMAZING!!! Makes painting so much fun(a little tiring) but WOW!! Flawless finish if you do it right. Thank you so much for posting this!!!
So happy it was helpful Lisa!!!
Thank you! I was painting a chair for the first time and after getting so frustrated putting on the primer, I thought, " there has to be a better way!". I found this, and let me tell you, adding the paint was so much easier!
I'm so glad it made things easier!
I used this technique on a stair railing and it worked great! I was afraid of splatter, but none at all. Thank you!
It does work great, right!? So glad you didn't get splattered. ;)
Mind blown!! Thx for the tip!!
What a great way to paint spindles..thank you so much!!!!!❤❤❤
Awesome! Thank you! I am working on a piece that has captain chairs with spindles and it has really been a pain. I am going to try this
Amazing! I am painting a very similar table for my first project and have tried everything just to get the primer on, three coats to cover. Very frustrating. Hopefully after one more sanding it will be ready for painting and I will be using your technique.
Thanks Denise for the great video. You've made painting spindles easy.
I'm so happy you've found this helpful Gloria! :)
After much trial and error, that’s exactly how I paint spindles, dowel rods or anything with a round shape. My deck rails have round tubular uprights between the top and bottom rails, and I painted them all that way in a very short time. I never really thought about how weird it would look to someone who was watching! 😂
..so I'm not the only one...lol. Works great, right! I use it on finials, dowels, legs, and anything with a circumference too. Great time saver! Thanks for watching and chiming in Connie! x
This is genius! You saved me a lot of frustration, it worked like a charm! And no, it did not splatter at all.
I'm so glad Julie! Thanks for commenting XO
Hi..that is exactly the way I do it 🤣😂 My husband used to be an auto body/painter for his dad...now he owns and operates....he just shakes his head at me lol...,just doesn’t get the distressing, sometimes messy painting, etc....he has helped with projects and he is so slow🙃😉bc he acts like everything is a car....even a pallet project...,I send him on errands...thanks for sharing😊k
That's too funny Kimberly! I think if it was up to our men - cars would be painted - furniture would not. 🤣😂
Thank you so much for sharing. What an easy way of doing spindles. Love it.
Yaay! I'm so happy you find it helpful. Happy painting Celine! x
@@SalvagedInspirations you even took the time to respond to me Denise. Thanks! I truly enjoy painting - nothing professional like you but am totally having fun and little tricks like you shared is most welcome and helpful.
Love this! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Dina! Thank YOU for watching! 🤗
GREAT tip! Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for watching Pam! x
Oh my gosh! You just saved me so much time and stress! Thank you so much. This was so easy.
I'm so glad!!!
Thanks for this! I have a very similar shelf tower, multiple spindles so this will help me alot! New sub and greetings from Illinois!
I'm watching this cause in a slapper2!!! Ty happy I'm not the only one. And yesssssss light on paint.
LOL - true to form! I found this video AFTER I struggled for hours trying to paint table legs (and brush marks definitely show). Next time....Thanks for the video!
uhhh, better late than never, right?...lol. If you give it a try on future projects I'd love to hear how it turns out for you Sue! :)
Great idea 💡
A great tutorial, I tried it and it worked! Thank you, can I ask which colour paint you used on the blue and where are the rose stencils from thanks again.
Is there a video on the white table with blue transfer flowered shown at the beginning of your video? I’ve looked through do many if your videos and can’t find it.
Well I’ll be darn. I do the save thing. I just got mad at it and it worked!! Lol
lol too funny... but ya, it works!!!
I have 150 of those 2 do tomorrow, I may
try it but I hope the homeowner doesn't think I'm nuts lol.
150 wowzee!!! If you give it a go I'd love to hear how it works for you!... and good luck tomorrow. :)
Genius!
That's how I do it. LOL. It does look funny watching it done. I do hate painting a spindle.
totally agree - looks funny but WORKS! lol
Bob Ross would love this technique! Beat the devil out of it!
Can you paint the first coat vertically and then the second coat with your method and get the same result?
Love this, can you post the link to this brush if possible I’m trying to figure out is that brush an angled one🤔
Hi Deb! All the products including brush are located in the "Source" section on the #siblog. Hope this helps. :) salvagedinspirations.com/how-to-paint-spindles-without-brush-marks/
It works great, thank you😀
Yaay! 🤗
Always amazing tips, thanks for sharing Denise! 👍🏻💕
Thanks Mara! Nice seeing you here and thanks for watching. :)
That’s awesome! I’m painting the spindles on my stairs and I was brushing up and down but I’ll try the slap method! Great vid!
Thanks and good luck with your stair spindles. :)
My dad was a professional painter & that’s how he painted spinals
Thank you!!!!!
How do you paint chair back spindles or other spindles that are spaced closely together?
If they are super close together I prefer using my sprayer for a nice finish.
Just in time for current project. I was so worried about painting the spindles! Did notice a bit of paint missing between some of the ridges, so when you are doing the second coat to you come in with a regular brush stroke to cover the missing paint? Thanks so much for this demonstration!!❤
Each additional coat should fill in all the details. If it doesn't, you can always take an artists brush to touch up but I don't think you'll need too. :)
Your video was just what I was looking for. May I ask what kind of paint you are using? Thanks!
Kathy Manzo I’m using Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint 💙😊
Love that technique.
Do you also slap on the top coat.
I am also looking for how to eliminate brunch marks with top coats on flat surfaces.
Thats a great question! I've never tried slapping on topcoat because I'm in the habit of using my spray gun for topcoats. If you give it a try, I'd LOVE to hear how it works!!!
Just what I looking for 👍
I'm so glad! Have fun :)
Just curious what you do when applying a coat of poly to chair spindles?
I spray my topcoats/poly with a spray gun however on this piece there is no topcoat. Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paints are durable enough as is for lower traffic items. :)
you are pro~ thank u, n wat kind of paint u using? Can I use Zinsser BIN for this ? Cuz it best stain blocker
Thank YOU Donn! :) I'm using Dixie Belle Paint. If you click on the "Subscribe" button under the video description it brings you to the direct post with the exact colors/supplies. And yes, you can use BIN Shellac Primer for this but work quickly! because it's a thin primer that dries very fast, if you take your time you'll end up with a sticky mess.
Salvaged Inspirations thank you , saw ur blog today, very helpful.
@@donz2293 I'm SO glad! Thanks for dropping by and saying so... mean a lot! :)
So could u use this technique applying Annie Sloan Pearlescent Glaze?
I’ve never used the AS pearl glaze but if it has a paint-like consistency, then yes 👍
@@SalvagedInspirations supposedly it shows brush strokes easily because of it's sheen. I thought this technique might be awesome on legs. Thanks so much! I love following all your projects!❤
💛
How do you do that on a staircase
I am curious, it appeared that the top and shelf were spray painted, why wouldn't you spray paint the spindles as well?
Hi Michael. The top and shelf were also applied with a brush. That said i LOVE spraying furniture but not everyone has access to one, so I wanted to demo how to get the smoothest finish on spindles using a brush. :)
@@SalvagedInspirations ok, just looked like some overspray on the spindles. Do you have a video for spraying? Want to try it but haven't tried it yet. Eventually a full oak kitchen to paint.
@@michaelfacey7711 I recently did a video on how to clean my spray gun (requested from an #sireader) but not a full vid on spraying. I want to do my cabinets too! Great idea for upcoming project/video. :)
I can’t do this on my bannisters but great idea
😍
So you end up with paint spots everywhere!!
When I add too much paint to the tips - yes...lol. But the brush doesn't need much paint to get this effect so when loaded correctly, it won't/shouldn't splatter.
What kind of paint do you use?
I used Dixie Belle's Chalk Mineral Paint.
I want to try this on my bannister but I'm worried I'm going to splatter paint all over the place!
If there's too much paint on the brush it can splatter... I've done it...but once you get the hang of how much paint to add it goes smoothly. :)
Exactly what I'm worried about!
Dry brushing it’s called in art😂
Estoy aprendiendo mucho gracias a sus vídeos. Muchas gracias. Yo soy aficionada y tengo un blog donde publico mis trabajos, por si le interesa conocerme un poco.
¡Muchas gracias! Me alegra que encuentres útiles estos videos y todo lo mejor para tu blog. Tendré que comprobarlo. :)
Cool but in a living room for banister spindles paint would splatter everywhere lol
I used this technique on the stair railing and it worked great. No splater at all.
That’s what drop cloths are for.
don't use a water based satin gloss use a top quality oil based satin gloss much better finish and much harder wearing.
يعطيك الصحة والعافية ربي يحفظك ويرعاك 🇮🇶🌹🎄🎄🌹🇮🇶🌹🎄🤗
Haha..
Bob Ross approves the brush smacks
Yesssss...lol
that sound .......lol
