  • Indie music reviewers BJ and Al discuss The Smile's new album "Wall of Eyes." They both give positive reviews, with BJ rating it 5 stars and Al 4.5 stars. They describe the album as more carefully crafted than The Smile's debut, with longer, more complex tracks. The hosts highlight songs like "Wall of Eyes," "Friend of a Friend," and "I Quit" as standouts. They compare the psychedelic, immersive sound to classic albums like The Beatles' "Revolver" and Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn." Overall they find the album to be a strong second chapter for The Smile as they evolve beyond Radiohead into their own distinct entity.

This album is far better than their debut
This actually cohesive, song after song, you get the full picture
Besides, they already sound like another band and not like a radiohead demo anymore

Feeling like this is the one - the one that is the masterpiece. That’s the feeelling and vibe I sense with this just after a couple listens. Such a strange, unusual sounding album. Friend of a friend - how do they do that? Loving “You Know Me!” as well. Contender for album of the year…yeah. That’s the vibe.

Love it….tighter list and each one killer. Rush, Can, still teasing out a few stones. Definitely Stg.Peppers string octave crescendo.
It’s a grower in every dimension. Great writing, composition. Tom’s drumming is even tighter and tastier. Bass lines are pure groove.

For me The first album is basically The Smile at its more direct and easy to digest. Wall of eyes on the other hand is The smile at its more complex and grower way, but with the same if not even more reward for listening the whole thing. And for the project as a whole to me The Smile is basically if you took the two most important pillars of Radiohead and mix them with some of Atoms for Peace/Thom Yorke's most rhythmic solo stuff, add some Jazz, Math Rock, Krautrock and Post-Punk influences from Tom Skinner. It’s less atmospheric than Radiohead but much more complex on the rhythm side also Jonny's guitars haven’t been this distorted since Hail to the Thief/Bodysnatchers Maybe?

Well said... still follows a lot the core Radiohead DNA and is a much evolved album than the first one

I think they did a great job by sticking to 45 minutes of music. It feels like they made this one for the LP experience, which I think was another great decision. Even the track order feels like it was chosen with this in mind, although I think “Wall of Eyes” is a bit boring as an opener. However, “Under Our Pillows” closes side one brilliantly.
Of the eight tracks, four are legitimately great. “Read the Room” is probably the best track, with “Bending Hectic” just behind it. “Under Our Pillows” and “Friend of a Friend” round up my list for best tracks.
This is not a perfect album, though. Aside from “Teleharmonic,” which I think is really good, the other tracks are a bit boring. They are not bad compositions at all, but they kinda go on for too damn long. I don’t think those had enough ideas to justify their length.
All in all, this is maybe a great album…? I’m sitting at 8.8/10 right now, but could see myself inching it to a clean 9/10.

radiohead ended being thom and jonny, being "multi instrumentalists" both and with the addition of computers, drum machines and thing, for me the other musicians can be replaceable... idk for me the smile is great

Under The Pillows psych reminds u of Pippers? Interesting… gives me more CAN Kraut vibes.
Wall of Eyes and Friend of A Friend are the weakest tracks, so my expectations were super low, but This album is amazing.
I honestly don’t need more Radiohead at this stage if the Smile keeps releasing albums.

Yeah the middle freak out in Under the Pillows reminded me of Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk and Interstellar Overdrive off that album ... maybe its just me :) Still a big fan of Wall of Eyes and Friend of a Friend but Read the Room has definitely grown on me. Great album!

@@theindieminers have you not heard suede’s last album Auto fiction? It is a classic. How many bands have reformed from splitting up and made music that is equally as good as their 90s hey day? Bands like smashing pumpkins and pixies have failed to achieve that. Plus what band in their 50s have a better front man than Brett Anderson? He’s way more energetic on stage than any 20+ year old. Manics are a decent band but for the whole package and consistency suede for me.
