The Beach Boys' Sunflower: Why did it Bomb?
indie miners dive into The Beach Boys' 1970 album "Sunflower," exploring why it became the band's worst-charting album despite its later recognition as a classic. They compare their experience of discovering the album to first hearing Love's "Forever Changes"-both albums initially underrated but now seen as masterpieces. They discuss the unique contributions of Dennis Wilson, whose tracks stand out for their distinctiveness, often diverging from the traditional Beach Boys' sound.
They also highlight the album's lack of a standout single, noting that it’s more of a cohesive album full of deep cuts rather than commercial hits. The discussion touches on internal band politics and how the abs...

    I agree it's very shallow and they lost their sound. The lyrics seem horrible on some tracks too. they perhaps tried something new but there is no tsructure in the best way and the average level is super low.

    The "Almost Summer" soundtrack is better than "Looking Back With Love", and both of those albums are head and shoulders above "Summer in Paradise". Mike is not musically gifted. He may be able to win lawsuits, but he lived his life on the coat-tails of his more talented cousin Brian.

    Musically Corgan has explored so much and have tried to move away from the magic of the first albums. I applaud that, recently I hear him using colors from that era and that’s alright. But I can’t tell if SP wants to be metal, Tool, Black Sabbath or a Nu Metal band I can’t tell from this album. It sounds like everything and nothing. What has kept a me away from Corgan music is that his Vocal melodies do not complement the music as much as before. He starts singing the vocals of the new albums post Machina and I’m like ok bye. This is my opinion and doesn’t reflect the awesomeness of the band. 🤘🏻🫡

For instance back on some classic songs like disarm , they bore the hell out of me =Good song but kinda boring.... Theres nothing boring on this, and sound quality is amazing, and the writing is better (crazier). These are way better musicians than they were when they were kids. Tons more knowledgable. I think that Billy is in the unique position that his singing should be further back in the mix like in the old days. The sharpness of his voice eclipses the music. If they rolled it back just by 10%, everything would be more "pumpkiny". By that I mean more congruent. His voice demands this, and they had it dialed in perfectly during the first several albums.

    Come on. It’s still the same crap. Zero emotion. Billy over singing. Formulaic rifts. Jibberish lyrics. Sounds like a B sides to me. Nothing like the 90s energy sound or angst.

    • @87hallzy
      @87hallzy Месяц назад

      Smashing pumpkins were throughout the 90's even up to Corgan's Zwan project amazing. Anything they did was amazing. Post Zwan until now he has not wrote a single good song. To say that this is inspired by Siamese Dream, or Mellon Collie is just ridiculous. The singing is horrible. I don't know if its because higher octave. I think they need Flood to produce an album and have Billy out of the room. They are probably friends with the female back up singer, she needs to go. Billy needs to stop over pronouncing lyrics which is super super annoying and many people have brought that up. Speaking of lyrics, this is the most lazy lyrics, and extremely pretentious. I couldn't get through the album because it was embarassing to even listen to. No emotion is totally right. There has been none since Zwan. As a fan, I have given Smashing Pumpkins so many chances because its not like they had 2 great songs. They had 7 albums (counting Pisces and the double album as 2 albums) of fantastic, near perfect songs and songwriting. I guess they just don't care anymore. There is not one person on this planet that can tell me truthfully you enjoy the lyrics. It's the worst lyrics of really any artist this century. People are liking these guys because they play guitar now? That is like Picasso stepping away from painting for a while, then coming back, opening a paint can and just pouring it on on the floor and leaving saying isn't this great? Then saying what else do you want I used paint like you wanted.

      Its funny, feels like we're almost trying to defend him now after we've had a number of episodes dedicated to how horrible Atum was :) ... Look it wasn't great - still think it was ok though - and probably what you'd expect from a band that's 35 years old. Agree that none of the lyrics and singing hold a candle to the 90s stuff, but the addition of actual band interplay (as opposed just sounding like a Corgan solo record) is the ingredient here that makes it at least better than the last few records ...

    • @87hallzy
      @87hallzy Месяц назад

      @theindieminers thank you for the reply. I would say yes, it is better than the last many records. Of course as you can guess, the last records were atrocious. This was bad in many ways, but it sounds like at least they all contributed. It just blows my mind how they can have really over a decade of pure magic, then it's this. I want to believe they can do it, but this was the end for me. They don't need me as a fan, but I'll always say 1991-2003 was magic for Billy Corgan and company. Hits or not, the entire records were outstanding.

    • @theindieminers
      @theindieminers Месяц назад

      I guess that's what happens to most bands after a while. The counter-initiative thing to say is that the "better" that Corgan feels like he has gotten at the songwriting craft over the years the worse they became. Among other things, a lot of the songs in the 90s all had breathing space within them - these days songs seem to be crammed with all possible ideas to a technical precision but potentially to their detriment. Maybe not 100% correct in articulating that...

    The pumpkins biggest issue is that Billy needs a producer who will pick and curate his songs. He’s a great songwriter but not a great producer. That will never happen though. Having the other members contribute more would help to keep the music fresh too. Jimmy is like the best drummer in the world yet the last few albums sounded like a drum machine.

    I wish you researched this more guys. Suno was the wrong tool to focus on for starters - anyone semi-serious in music considers suno a plaything. Udio, on the other hand… i can give you plenty of examples where its impossible for any outsider to accurately determine whether it's human-made or not. But the biggest issue i have is this. The current set of tools is the worse it will ever been from this point onwards. The next generation of this stuff, where the intelligence is in the application (and enhancement) of music theory rather than just generative - that is what is going to blow people's minds. Let's revisit your position in 6 months

    • @theindieminers
      @theindieminers 2 месяца назад

      Firstly, thanks for watching! You raise some valid points, and we’re actually probably closer in seeing it your way than what you might think. Udio does seem to offer more variety at the moment, however in general we’re still struggling to find any generated music that we would listen to on repeat. It would be awesome to be proven wrong (esp. in six months) - and the technology is crazy cool, but the high bar HAS TO BE for this to generate the best albums of all time on demand with minimal human involvement, otherwise what is the point? It feels like reaching this outcome might be tied to achieving AGI, which is not a given. In the meantime, these tools will certainly help semi-talented musicians be better, which is actually a good thing!

It's basically the Speak-n-Spell of music generation. On the plus side, it completes a whole song in one shot, without having to build it all piece-by-piece.

So, when you train an AI it is no different than when you train a person. The new AI models are not simply spitting out search results. They are not doing a copy and paste of something out there. They are generating something new from the inspiration of the past. It is no different than people. Say you take a close look at the Beatles and study their music in depth. You can see the influence of classical composers in their music. If you look at pop music you can see why so many pop songs sound the same as all the others. The basic structures are the same. I spent a semester in college thinking I could be a music major. My music theory class was all about studying the forms of music from the past. We learned the rules of things to do and not do. We learned voice leading, what makes a pleasant cord for voices to sing. What we learned from all the rules we were taught could then be used to create something that sounded exactly like Bach, Mozart, Handel, etc. The main challenge is that the AI can gobble up the information so much faster. If I want to learn something new, say philosophy, I will go to the Internet, books, videos, etc., and start to learn what others say, and what others have done in the past. If I want to make my photography better I will study Rembrandt, VanGogh, Mattiese, and DaVinci, and then apply those lessons to my work. I will also study modern photographers like George Hurrell, Ansel Adams, Joe McNally, and others. I am not copying those artists. However, I am copying their style. I am getting inspiration from them.

      I 100% agree. I came to the comments to say something very similar. I don't quite understand the arguments against AI which tend to come in two forms: First, the AI is copying other artist's work, to which I saw, we already have laws to combat duplication of other people's work. Then they tend to pivot to the second argument which is that they can't use copyrighted works to create an algorithm, which I don't think is anywhere in copyright law. Maybe that's something that's soon to be hanmmered out in court or in congress, but as it stands I don't see how it's any different than an artist like me listening to a bunch of Buddy Holly songs, finding out what instrumentation, chords, lyrics, and melodies he uses then using that information to create a new work. I really don't think the argument has legs. And for the record, I am a recording artist who has never used AI to create any of my original works, and still I support it and am excited by where it's going.

      If you want to become better at photography or painting, you would not look millions of photos to get style references of, like how the modern art generators work. Instead you would get a pencil and brushes and start painting until you are good. You could also take some lessons where some teacher explains how perspective works, how color theory works, what anatomy is, what is the ethics of art etc etc. The art generator never got those lessons. You also would have preferences of what kind of art you like and what not, which also is impossible for Ai to have, since it doesn't have preferences. Ai stops thinking and therefore existing when no one is prompting. (I think, therefore I am)

      @@MrSorbias First, a great student will not only work on their technique, but they will also study the masters. The teacher you mentioned will show examples of how various artists used perspective, color theory, leading lines, negative space, etc. to get the image they wanted. Second, the final statement is interesting. Right now AI is simply a servant to our requests. I know it is a heated debate as to if AI could become sentient. The interesting thing about that conversation is that philosophers have argued and debated for centuries about what exactly it means to be sentient. We struggle to answer that question for ourselves. It is going to be even more difficult when judging AI. Right now AI will only produce an answer in response to our prompts. Can we get to the point that the AI can generate thoughts and ideas without an external prompt? I would argue that it is incredibly possible. I would also argue that quantum computing will be the innovation we need for that to happen. The massive leap in processing power of a quantum computer is almost beyond imagination.

    you make a great point that other song writers use songs from other great artists they love as inspiration for their own new song creations. This is no different to how these AI platforms work - unless, as they might claim, they don't use existing music to train their models (cough cough). I think one of the main differences between AI and proper song writers is that these AI platforms make it so much easier for talentless "creators" like me to create "great" music. I have been experimenting with both Suno and Udio using (more or less) the same lyrics and prompts to create music so I can compare the 2 platforms and I'm sorry to say, I personally love the end result on both of them. I've uploaded both sets of songs onto SoundCloud because for the most part they are songs I genuinely want to hear. So I "pretend" I'm listening to "new" artists, or bands I already love, who are creating music that's worthy of being on my favourites list.

      Thanks for watching! Yeah this is interesting it's almost as if everyone has the chance to create their own unique version of the best album of all time which is mind blowing to even think about. If I were in a band id definitely be using this to tidy up some of my shitty songs and have it played with real instruments

      @@theindieminers Lol, this is exactly what goes through my mind with every new song I use AI to create. I love going to listen to live bands in pubs and clubs, some of their songs could use a bit of polish. A lot of the songs that I'm able to get Udio and Suno create I often imagine being sung by some of those bands. They may see things differently of course, but to your point, if they are "average" song writers, they can improve things by using these AI platforms. In my opinion, as a fan of any band who has great singers and musicians, I don't care if the song is created by AI, it's how they deliver it that is important to me. Of course, that's just my opinion 🙂

      Just to be clear, I believe that the best music will continue to be created by humans; formulaic music will easily be replaced by AI. Think Stock, Aitken and Waterman back in the 80's. That could just as easily have been AI generated hit songs (??)
