3:34 encapsulates all of the kids in one. I have no idea if that kid in the purple sweater is grooving or bored out of his mind. This is such a fun video.
Even if the melody is childish, it’s really hard to follow, specially for a kid. It definitely took them out of their comfort zone. It made them feel like there is more than just what they know. Sone of them were so attentive, or deep in their minds 😊 such a weird and beautiful idea for a video!
Honestly, it's an interesting experiment since the children can't lie. Obviously it's not a music for children, but when the lights turn on, they look happy. Maybe the message here is: "We're all children and we get so excited about superficial things that we don't pay attention to the most important things."

It works for this song which has such a push/pull between catchy and somewhat deliberately flat and tuneless stretches. It’s the Smile’s way of showing “yeah, we know this section is less immediately fun than that section. So what?”

Where did it go? In somebody's pocket, a friend of a friend All the loose change, loose change
This video really hit me hard. Children are so impressionable. They are the future. Let’s allow them to blossom in a healthy world. Let’s do our part, our very best to make sure these children have a bright and loving future. To be themselves and accepted fully.
You do your part by living closely with your people, and allowing your children to blossom from that kind of an environment. The constant search for the self is an abyss. We don’t choose our own names but we recall them with near perfect precision when they are uttered.

I already can't wait to see the future comments from some of the kids in the video like "I was there. I didn't really know how precious the moment was."
Absolutely love this song. I couldn’t work out how this song sounded familiar but I have just now. Dare I say it ? Thom sounds almost Beatles like. And the film clip is so addicted. Watching those kids faces. Do they even realise, that they’ve just witnessed musical geniuses at work? 😂
So simple and so beautiful to watch. The idea of including the kids and then capturing their raw reactions is pretty brilliant. I loved it. Paul Thomas Anderson is the master.
@@Godspleen oh sorry, I think I misunderstood your question.. so my answer was about the Friend of a Friend music video. The screening event wasn't a single film, it was a combo of a bunch of things - some exclusive behind the scenes footage (no audio), of the recording process, full album playback in surround sound, the premiere of the video for Friend of a Friend, and screening of a few other pta x radiohead/thom collabs, including Anima.
@@grapegirl No my question was about the Friend of a Friend video don't worry! But that must have been a great night in this London theater - lucky indeed...
Not only is this a great song, but the video really moved me - seeing all those children react to the music in such an authentic way, wow! Kinda reminded me of the first time I listened to In Rainbows, I was a teenager at that time, but I still remember all the complex emotions it brought up in me.

I am a very critical person in my both professional and personal life. But there is one exception being all things related to Thom Yorke, Radiohead & The Smile. Love their stuff. Always evolving, always exciting.
When these kids are the age of the band members (and are educated enough to realize what legends these band members are), they'll blow their friends minds when they're like, "Oh Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead and The Smile? Those musical legends from our grandparents generation? Yea I saw them at the height of their powers live just a few feet from the stage in a concert for me and 20 of my friends."
I love how in they're music its constantly switching between which instrument is leading the story. The instruments just sound in perfect harmony with each other... not one taking the limelight
As a primary school teacher, all of these facial expressions and involuntary movements are deeply familiar to me. In a way, being oneself in front of a class feels very similar to performing a song that's way over their heads. Then again, if the younger generations aren't our true ‘audience’, who is?
Genius concept. It invites you to reflect on how we perceive music and how we respond to musicians performing it, but does so in such a light-hearted way, despite the incredibly deep questions it poses. Love this band. The album is magic.
This was so fun to watch. All the kids not sure what to do or think about what they’re seeing. A few bopping along. Some day some of them will look back with wonder. 💜😊💜
This is probably the best song I've heard in the last two years. Tom & Johnny can always compose fantastic songs. I feel a strong The Beatles vibe here. Great idea with the kids in the clip, it's really fun to watch their reactions.
We were at the premiere in Paris with my 17 years old daughter that became a huge fan of Radiohead and Thom/Johnny work. As her father was at the same age in the early 90's when hearing them changed my life for the better. We were there literally 3 hours before the opening for the sweet sweet tape and merchs, NO ONE could be bypassing us for this (and hell no one did) 😅 Hearing for the first time this album, and discovering this clip with her next to me DEFINITELY HITTED SO SO CLOSE TO HOME ❤ I will never forget this moment, and can't wait to see you again in Belgium in march with her.

Add some sparkles to create the right effect
And they're all smiling, so I guess I'll stay
At least 'til the disappointed have eaten themselves away
Buried from the waist down
Stop looking over our shoulder
All the window balconies, they seem so flimsy
As our friends step out to talk and wave and catch a piece of sun
I guess I believe in an altered state
Where they leave their windows and their doors open wide
Here, the telephone lines are always busy
Unable to give a reason or a straight answer
Buried from the waist down
Stop looking over our shoulder
We need to get it together
From our window balconies, we take a tumble
As our friends step out to talk and wave and catch a piece of sun
All of that money, where did it go?
Where did it go?
In somebody's pocket, a friend of a friend
All the loose change, loose change
there's some level of comedy to playing a song themed around corruption and nepotism to children
Thank you!
👍👏
@@DuringDarkyeah definitely felt that vibe as well
This video really hit me hard.

Sadly, they’re probably all doomed to live in a post apocalyptic hellscape
30 year career... how can they still be getting better!!? And that stunning last section at 4:29
"All of that money, where did it go?" and the look out over the room. I got chills on my arms
Absolutely. It's as if some of the children understand that lyric and what it means to us in the UK 😢❤
I already can't wait to see the future comments from some of the kids in the video like "I was there. I didn't really know how precious the moment was."
This is definitely my favorite homeless band
They are just starting out. The gigs don’t pay much
@@daheikkinenI know you're joking but the first gig in Amsterdam was 75 euros and the upcoming show is 80 euros or something like that
thom looks like a hobo whom some kind fellow put some random clothes on indeed 😂
@@daheikkinenthey outsell in like 5 hours lol
Check out death grips
Absolutely love this song. I couldn’t work out how this song sounded familiar but I have just now. Dare I say it ? Thom sounds almost Beatles like. And the film clip is so addicted. Watching those kids faces. Do they even realise, that they’ve just witnessed musical geniuses at work? 😂
I was thinking the exact same thing. A little day in the life? There are parts that remind me of pyramid song too
@@Duzz14 definitely those two!
Maybe my favorite music video of all time!!
So simple and so beautiful to watch. The idea of including the kids and then capturing their raw reactions is pretty brilliant. I loved it. Paul Thomas Anderson is the master.
The video is so great. I was lucky enough to see it at the Wall of Eyes on film screening in London last week. Fun fact: Tom Skinner's kid features!
how long is it?
@Godspleen around the same as the track length? Maybe slightly more... I don't think the music starts straight away, but I can't remember exactly.
@@grapegirl ok thanks, I was wondering if it was longer like the Anima short film
That was so sweet. You gotta love kids, they keep us grounded
I bet to some of these kids do know how special this was, and it’ll influence their whole life
Time and parent signatures abound.
Best music video I've seen in decades.
Not only is this a great song, but the video really moved me - seeing all those children react to the music in such an authentic way, wow! Kinda reminded me of the first time I listened to In Rainbows, I was a teenager at that time, but I still remember all the complex emotions it brought up in me.
I’m a time traveler. That boy on the right 3:18 in green sweater will become one of the greatest musicians.
plot twist: the kids are the actual time travelers, and from right to left, that's Ed, Phil, and Thom.
So spot on@@M2Mil7er
@@M2Mil7er more like thom, phil and jonny, left to right
Those last seconds turned memories of my Brother and I around those kids ages in the late 70s into tears rolling down my face.
I keep coming back to this, each time finding new subtleties in both musicianship and docu-videography. True master class ❤
His voice makes all of us feel like kids again. ❤
OMG, this is the best editing ever in a video. Absolutely brilliant and I was in stitches.
i heard the whole album at London Wall Of Eyes On Film and it was amazing, this video is great too
What was playing on the screen during the other songs that don’t have music videos?
@@NoRUclipsName1so when they played the whole album for the first time the songs were accompanied by the art made for them (basically just what the friend of a friend audio yt video is for every song) and then any songs that had a music video were played again with the video after that :)
How do they make 5/4 feel so natural. They are masters.
I am a very critical person in my both professional and personal life. But there is one exception being all things related to Thom Yorke, Radiohead & The Smile. Love their stuff. Always evolving, always exciting.
This helped me smile after receiving some really bad news. Thank you.
hoping youre okay
Hope you’re well and have support wherever you are
THE SMILE
Hang in there pal, we're in this together.

Those kids picking their nose are forever immortalized in a music video. Their parents will never let them live it down.
So what. I think it more important to grow up happy, then be in any music video.
Seeing this premiere tonight! Very excited
I loved watching every child's reaction and expressions to the music. I expect this was the idea behind the video. So wonderful.
These dudes will never cease to amaze me. Favorite musicians hands down
If you asked any musician what would be their "nightmare gig" this would be it. They did just fine.
Great song off of a great album.
Counting every second!!!!!!!
FRRRR
Every plank time!
Have had the chance to see Thom twice. He’s the best. Hes the heart!
Awesome video. Awesome band! Those kids will look at his video in 25 years and go, "we had no idea...!"
I just cant get over how good this song is
So many 'priceless' expressions from the kids 😊
When these kids are the age of the band members (and are educated enough to realize what legends these band members are), they'll blow their friends minds when they're like, "Oh Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead and The Smile? Those musical legends from our grandparents generation? Yea I saw them at the height of their powers live just a few feet from the stage in a concert for me and 20 of my friends."
I love how in they're music its constantly switching between which instrument is leading the story. The instruments just sound in perfect harmony with each other... not one taking the limelight
Wow, the look on Thoms face as he walked away, bless him. What a great song 🎵 🙏
ok, it's funny writing smiling comments but have you ever stopped by to think how beautiful is this song of The Smile?
The kids are so real ❤
Such a powerful message to the given audience. So much braveness and irony here. Bravo!
The Smile performing for children is like. . . It's like taking children to see a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, lol
Now the children ARE a Paul Thomas Anderson movie
hehe did you catch the director credit on this
@@actualdin8458 Does you asking this mean that you think I coincidentally named Paul Thomas Anderson?
Creepy
As my friend sayd, all kids are on DXM
The message here is that imagery/lights/action draws more attraction than the genius in plain view. Even amongst children. It's a visual world.
Not if you are blind or live in a dark room or are asleep and not dreaming.
10 years from now we'll come back to this video, remembering how we got to see the premiere.
Thats the best litteral wall of eyes one could get
This was so fun to watch. All the kids not sure what to do or think about what they’re seeing. A few bopping along. Some day some of them will look back with wonder. 💜😊💜
I'd do anything to be one of those kids. Lucky! Favorite song from the smile hands down!! Thom is amazing
The most sincere reaction is the reaction of children.
Amazing clip. Thanks for all!
Oh this will be fun. I was lucky enough to watch the screening, it is a charming riot if there ever could be one.
This is probably the best song I've heard in the last two years. Tom & Johnny can always compose fantastic songs. I feel a strong The Beatles vibe here. Great idea with the kids in the clip, it's really fun to watch their reactions.
At first I thought it wouldn't work but it did... Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the greatest! 👏👏👏
We were at the premiere in Paris with my 17 years old daughter that became a huge fan of Radiohead and Thom/Johnny work. As her father was at the same age in the early 90's when hearing them changed my life for the better.
We were there literally 3 hours before the opening for the sweet sweet tape and merchs, NO ONE could be bypassing us for this (and hell no one did) 😅
Hearing for the first time this album, and discovering this clip with her next to me DEFINITELY HITTED SO SO CLOSE TO HOME ❤
I will never forget this moment, and can't wait to see you again in Belgium in march with her.
Such an incredible song
Best New music I've heard in a long long time.👍
jonny and thom are still making music! I feel absolutely grateful that I can enjoy this.
Please grab the wheel Thom and never let go.
Just can't get this out my head. Top 5 of anything him and Jonny have done
That “buried from the waist down” part gives strong Grizzly Bear vibes
a band that couldn't exist without the influence of radiohead
@@konnyknees agreed!
