This probably won't win any painting contest but considering the aspect of cost/time x skills needed x outcome - this absolutely steals my heart and makes me wonder that even such a terrible, completely unskilled and talentless person like me should pick up a brush and try it out. Will probably pick up ArmyPainter Speedpaints instead of GW's Citadel Contrast though, but the idea remains the same.
Discovering your method has leveled up my painting like crazy. I've always loved contrast/speed paints, but layering up over them brings the whole model to the next level without adding a whole lot more time.
Just started dark angels from leviathan and from the schemes I’ve seen I really agree on the edge highlights, just really doesn’t sit with me and the DA theme, exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
Just starting my Fallen. Out of ALL the tutorials, I like this one the most - mix of speed and quality. I may to a Grimdark Villainy Ink wash instead of the Sepia wash. I will experiment.
Lovely Job Andy. If the double pistol thing really bothers you I've found that it's fairly easy to clip off the Grip and Trigger guard from the holster and leave it empty.
Dark Angels! My favourite chapter! The secretive plasma spammers are awesome! And you will never get bored of their scheme, because they got three! The robes are a great little thing to have dotted in their, creates a very unique aesthetic. Since you are looking for suggestions: I suggest taking a look at Craftworld Iybraesil. They got a really vibrant teal-y blue scheme that looks awesome. They also love themselves some Howling Banshees.
that's a really nice clean dark green with enough variation but still staying dark green :) something I like doing to most of my minis, especially space marines, is giving them what i call the "superman" treatment. he and many other superheroes got some for of belt or underwear on their hero suit that adds visual interest and break up the suit a bit. so i always paint the belt and belt buckle a different color to help break up the power armor, nothing fancy just some type of brown (light or dark doesn't matter) or a black-ish color with a metallic belt buckle. i find it helps a lot for me with visual interest :)
Dark angels are my marine army that I've come back time and again. And I've always struggled to find a dark green that I really like, I've done the gw method (don't like it at all) and I've gone for more attempt at natural osl highlighting which works....kinda. but this is Def the favourite one I've seen so far. I'll be giving this a try when I get more models for the dark angels.
Thank you so much for making this video. I am also glad to hear that I wasn't the only one asking for your take on Dark Angels. For a future video suggestion I think it would be great to see how your method of contrast and layering would work for something with heavy texture and definition like fur. A Skaven model could be interesting with all the different fur color options that they have. Thank you for all that you do and the inspiration that watching your videos brings to making people want to put paint to plastic.
That such a kind message to read thank you so much. And yes I’d love to get stuck into some more textured models and I love skaven so not a bad idea at all.
I find I need to thin Dark Angels green with Contrast Medium otherwise it just swallows up the zenithal highlights without mercy. The whole coat looked like I just went over it with Caliban Green base paint with no significant highs or lows to be found from the contrast.
@Conner Hutchins sorry for the necroping but the real best way to do dark angels armor with that paint is to zenethal, then do a coat of warp lightning or karandaras green and then finally go in with 1:1 medium+DA Green. It adds way more vibrancy
Their colour scheme is very appropriate for this time of year. :D Since you're doing different chapters of Space Marines, I'd love to see you do different Orders of Sisters, different Leagues, and different Hive Fleets. I'm always curious how you'd do them. I hope you have a wonderful Holiday season, and I'm certainly looking forward to more Battle Reports too.
Excellent as ever, thank you. The best colour I've found for painting Dark Angels is Army Painter's Speedpaint Absolution Green. I'd be interested to see how you think it compares to Contrast Dark Angels Green. All the best.
Dark Angels are on my short list of chapters I'd want to feild if I ever got the opportunity, so this was great to watch quick and simple. Could you do the Soul Drinkers when you get an opportunity? There's not many purple armies so seeing one them would be awesome! Great video as always Andy :)
Funny you mentioned about using black templars as a basis for dark angels, I'm currently looking at the same idea but paint in horus heresy colour scheme
Great video, would love your advice on something. I have the 2017 Dark Imperium set, back then I wasn't aware of contrast paints. I finished a couple of Dark Angels at the time then abandoned it but I'd like to finish them with contrasts (I was never great at "traditional" painting!) My problem is they've all already had a spray of Caliban green (probably a little heavier than it should have been) and then a wash coat of something, can't remember exactly what, either a black or a dark green, but it was applied way too thickly and I've got some rather shiny parts in the recesses. So. Reality is they're not getting painted unless I go to contrasts. Do you think I should spray them all black and then a light layer grey seer to start again and accept the risk of losing detail, or, do you think just the grey seer on top of what I've got (they're already very dark!) Or something else? Thank you!!
Why dont you try a grey undercoat with a heavish highlight in silver. Also I have just used Green Stuffs chrome to edge the sholder pads/plates. Really gives a pleasing look to the armour.
@@MediocreHobbies Thank you, I'm printing custom heads for a Joy Toy 1/18 scale DA figure, and I wanted to match the paint shade. Your shade seems quite close.
It might sound weird but if you watch my video on highlighting skin, it might help you. Basically you're making the cloth/skin/armour brightest(highlighting with the brightest colour paint) where the sun would hit it most. Pick a basic direction where the "light" is coming from, and then make anything facing that light brighter than anywhere where the light can't see. I hope this makes sense but please ask again if I confused you even more! Here's the skin video to show you how highlighting stages work. ruclips.net/video/7B0drv7Ufm4/видео.html
For this result you do, but I’ve done plenty of models without layering after contrast, just depends on the scheme, the off white colour for example in this scheme needs a layer paint to brighten it up but there’s suitable contrast colours you can just leave alone for armour etc!
@@MediocreHobbies thanks i feel the dark angels green would look 10x better as it does in your video with a layer over it - just starting this army so might aswell get all the paints now and be done with it aha - do you find you use alot of the contrast paint per model ? (basically how long would it last)
Gonna be honest. I think the caliban green and the shade was not necessary as you can barely see it and contrast paints already shade the areas. Everything is else great
Thanks man! The shade seals in the contrast paint to prevent it from rubbing off and it’s totally up to you how you paint it after that so you can leave out whatever you want!

As a Dark Angel's player, thank you for this one!
Any time pal.
Thanks Andy, I don't see you in the shop anymore, but I still get your valuable advice online!!! For The Lion!!!!
For the lion my friend.
This video has sealed the deal with how I want to paint up my Azrael. Thank you so much for going in depth with this build. Fantastic work!
Oh love hearing that! Thank you!!
Discovering your method has leveled up my painting like crazy. I've always loved contrast/speed paints, but layering up over them brings the whole model to the next level without adding a whole lot more time.
That’s so kind pal. Thank yous I much and I’m glad it’s helped.
Sounds awesome - I'd love to see your take on Blood Ravens!
I love blood ravens. I’ve wanted to do them for years.
Hey, the lower volume on the music worked well for me. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback, it’s always helpful! Glad you liked the difference!
Just started dark angels from leviathan and from the schemes I’ve seen I really agree on the edge highlights, just really doesn’t sit with me and the DA theme, exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
That's great to hear, and glad you agree too :D Enjoy your painting sessions and hope you get some good games in too if you do play!
Just starting my Fallen. Out of ALL the tutorials, I like this one the most - mix of speed and quality. I may to a Grimdark Villainy Ink wash instead of the Sepia wash. I will experiment.
Definitely going for this more muted /military looking green over the standard mouldy apple look everyone else seems to go with
Ye I’m not mad on that other style. Just not for me.
Lovely Job Andy. If the double pistol thing really bothers you I've found that it's fairly easy to clip off the Grip and Trigger guard from the holster and leave it empty.
Solid idea.
Hey Andy - I'd love to see your take black templars!!!
You’re in luck-already got a whole playlist done for then 😄

I like your suggestion a lot. And yes that’s one of the best parts of the dark angels. Three schemes.

That’s a solid point. And makes so much sense.
Had no clue there was an Irish content creator in the miniature space! This is awesome 🇮🇪
Glad to hear it pal. Appreciate the support.
I’d love to see your take on White Scars.
I have a Heresy video on White Scars-you might want to check that out!

really great this video!! fast and good quality really thank you for all his good ideas 🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵

Dirty yellow death guard ;D
Hahahah I will get to more death guard don’t worry.

Damn, amazing job, hopefuly i will reach this level someday!
Just follow along pal. You will mail it.
nice work :D i've always hated how GW paint their dark angels with the Tron-like glowing edge highlights.
Same I was never a fan.
Ah, Dark Angels. My favourite Heretic Astartes chapter 😉
Hahahah cheeky.
I find I need to thin Dark Angels green with Contrast Medium otherwise it just swallows up the zenithal highlights without mercy. The whole coat looked like I just went over it with Caliban Green base paint with no significant highs or lows to be found from the contrast.
What ratio do you mix it in?
I can understand that. And I’m worried it will need that extra step on modles with no robes to steel the attention away.

I shall have to give it a try. I’m tempted to wait on using any more speed paints to see what there new range is like. Cant wait for it.
Amazing as always mate, would love to see a mk3 marine paint in dusk raider colours
Hmmm your not the first person to ask.

Souldrinkers is one I haven’t been asked before. But any son of dorn is a solid choice for me.

Oh that’d be awesome to see! Definitely do a test model at least!!
Thanks!
Cheers man, really appreciate that!
Did you ever do the Deathwing? Or will that likely be a future Video?
It will indeed be a future video.
Perfect Andy, thank you. Will you be doing the Deathwing?
If not, what colours would you use for the bone armour?
Yes I will indeed be doing the Raven and death wing. It would be rude not to.
That looks awesome! What was it primed with?
Chaos black and then grey seer.
Always good to have a bolt pistol on your hip in the off chance that plasma pistol overheats ? :)
haha yeah maybe that's it :D

So test on one with the black and then grey seer and see where you are after that. You mite need to strip them.
For deathwing just reverse? Also a ravenwing video would be great too
I have plans.
Why dont you try a grey undercoat with a heavish highlight in silver. Also I have just used Green Stuffs chrome to edge the sholder pads/plates. Really gives a pleasing look to the armour.
Interesting. I shall have a look.
Do you have a list of all the paints you used written down anywhere that you can share? Would be so grateful
Not right now sorry!
Just wondering, whered you get/make the bases for the head and backpack mounts?
There from gamesworkshop. There very handy.
I couldn't catch what you said early on, you said you sprayed it with chaos Black then what did you coat it with?Grey seer?
I did indeed. Chaos black all over and then a heavy zenithal of grey seer all with rattle cans. No airbrush.
