Haven't painted with a drybrush focus in 20 years but these videos have my attention - can't wait for my series D to show up to give this method a try.
Stunning paint job, really makes that green jump out and such a lovely sheen! I think painting a whole army of them this way would drive me nuts but for the main characters, beautiful!
Great video as always Byron. Great use of contrast paint over a highlighted base coat. Love the face, really quick and effective technique. My top tip for decals on a curve is gloss varnish first then micro set and sol to soften. Leave it a while and the decal will melt into the surface. GW decals are nice and thin, so they conform really well. Keep up the great content
Hey Simon, apologies for the delay, dude! This is a great tip, I'm genuinely very inexperienced with them, so I'll lap up anything that'll help me out :)

Any chance you could do a deathwing model? Love to see how you would go about doing the bone colour power armour. Still waiting for my series D brushes to arrive, then I'll be giving this a go.
I'll give this colour scheme a go for some of my Dark Angels Kill Team squad. I was looking at trying a different scheme to paint them with. Also, I should paint their heads seperately to give them more details. I normally do it to the WH 40k vehicles, I rarely do it on infantys. Thank you!
@@ArtisOpus Just to say I second the Crimson Fists request! All your videos are incredible though, I always learn a lot and absolutely love your brushes!
As we build up our Power-Armour library this is getting requested more and more, I need to work out how to do it my way, and how to make it obviously distinct from the Ultras (ignoring the red hand :)), it's definitely high on the list though (perhaps after white scars, and some bad-dudes)!
Looks awesome! I love how the awesome things that are TUFTS (and skulls) really make a model come together and I love the edge highlighting via dry brushing. I'd love to see a fully weathered KO army (or maybe just a squad) painted with 40K power armour techniques. That would look sick! ;)
Big fan. Got back in with 9th. Been trying to find a way i'd like to paint a dark angels force. Think i'll try and emulate your methods. It's subtle, but pops where a lot of Dark Angel paint jobs feel kind of flat.
Have to agree I only just stumbled upon the videos and put in a latte order never spent this much on brushes and accessories before so hoping I can pull it off
Wanted to give a update. Bought the Drybrush and basic brush set back at the start of quarantine, and honestly? Some of the best stuff I've ever used to paint models. They take a teeny bit of care, but they're worth every cent I paid.
Really like this one, great to finally get the Dark Angels done on the channel! I think I would personally use Ork Flesh contrast over the actual Dark Angels green one just because I've found that this paint behaves better for me - My DA green contrast always comes out more patchy than the other contrasts, I'm not sure why but I have found that the way the paint behaves varies massively across the contrast range. I like the trick with Cassandora Yellow on the gold, I'm definitely going to be using that from now on!
Hey dude, apologies for the delay! The contrasts really do have far more varied properties than I'd originally thought, I've been on the lookout for it more and more since the Aethermatic blue Gloss incident ^^. If you like the Cassandora trick you should enjoy the next one! :)
New Necron models are coming soon - would love to see your take on the new C'Tan Void Dragon - doing a teal to white - spin the boxart paint job a little bit to Artis Opus styling
Your videos are so useful for quick application of base layers and highlights, and from there you can really spend more time on details without feeling like it is a big slog. Nice.
Absolutely, mate; exactly what we're aiming for, all about letting people get to the fun bits quicker, and allowing you to meet expectations, thanks so much for the kind words!
Might have to give this a try- I've been looking for ways to take my Dark Angels to the next level. They come out alright with my current techniques, but very basic. They need a little something, so maybe this is it.
All of these are amazing! Have you done or could you educate us on either a white miniature or the half and half coloured miniature? Thank you Keep up the great work.
Can you do a video/whiteboard talk about how you do sub assembly? I’m having a difficult time with sub assembly on my Necrons because of the small round joints on them! But the way you had the marines head set up for sub assembly seems like it could help
This is genuinely something I wouldn't have thought of at all, but it could be a great topic, it's quite a complicated question/answer, but could absolutely help a load of people out, thanks so much!
I was wondering how it would look if i started with caliban and then paint as you did show, woud it change the end resault too much? Love how this ended up looking👍
You think you could paint a White Scars dude? I know you've done a video on painting white on minis. But a nice grim dark worn white on a space marine would be much appreciated. If possible. Love the videos.
A great video idea, if it’s not been done already, would be 3 - 5 dry brush blending exercises that would advance blending skills for the beginner/intermediate painters using a spare base, or spare plastic items lying around.
Hello, I´ve been following your work for some time and the things you do are amazing. I even bought brushes from you and they are top quality. I like your drybrushing technique tutorials. I would like to ask you, if you are going to create tutorial for White scars. Manny thanks, yours faithfully Jan Ježek
Awesome video! I am using your technique for my new Dark Angels. I haven’t played since 6th edition so I am pretty excited. I couldn’t find it so I am wondering, what ratio you used when you mixed the medium and the Dark Angels contrast? Thanks again! 4:35
I love your videos! Keep up the great work. I am just starting out on Dark Angels and as it’s Christmas I don’t have any Dark Angels Green Contrast. As it’ll be a while before I can get some, can you recommend something else that isn’t contrast for the wash please?
Hey dude, sorry for the delay. Try using any vibrant green paint you have and mix it with green ink. If you don't have one then carefully adding in a little purple or something for depth may be close for this purpose😊Let us know how it goes!
Love the video, I've just ordered my set of brushes. Quick question, how do you get the arms to sit so well on a stick. When I've tried they move around quite alot. Thanks
I just push them really tight dude, these ones have a very snug fit, you can always put a tiny dot of glue on, and then break the bond if needed, this way you'll get greater friction too, as things'll be less smooth :)
Question about the green, because on a proper camera even a lame layering looks better, so I have to ask, does the drybrush look as good as it is on this video? Because as I know drybrush always leaves that stippled effect and giving it a glaze doesnt change much, or maybe i miss something? :)
My man, you should definitely check the rest of our channel out 😃. We are all about the drybrushing, and pushing the quality as much as possible. The glaze does make a difference, but of course it is still important to do high quality drybrushing underneath it!
Exactly the same as we did in our Ultramarines tutorial. Take that method's colours and apply them just like we did on the Space Wolf or the Imperial Fist. Let me know how it goes 😊 And thank you so much for your support!
what is the mix between the dark angels green and the medium? because i em trying this video out for my first ever army but i keep getting these ugly brush strokes on my model and idk what im doing wrong. got any tips?
Hey dude, I've just googled them, what an awesome colour scheme! I'd actually start them pretty close to how I started this guy, I loved the colour mix of xerus and moot :)
Hi ! Great video, I love the result ! I didn't understand where the blue on the backpack comes from + your black priming seems purple-ish... Could you explain what you did there please ?
The blue on the backpack is the original sprue colour, the Space Marine heroes have blue, red and green sprues for the ultramarine, blood angels and deathguard versions
I have open ear studio headphones and the audio was so good compared to a bunch of others that I had to stop as I thought the sound was on my speaker / coming from the room and it was really disorienting for the first few minutes :D Do you use some 3DIO microphones or what? :D
Mhhmmm, it's just the normal Lav mic, maybe I got the distance from me perfect or something...? It was on a collar so it could just be the sound entered more directly than normal, when it's a little under my chin. I wish I knew so I could duplicate it!
@@ArtisOpus It was so perfect on the reference headphones that you can't imagine :D It was a strange experience for sure :D I hope you find how it happened :D FYI you can get fairly decent ones for under 100$ so if you do not already have proper headphones get one :D Also nice job here , I love your videos ^^
How do you get such even coats? Do you just keep the brush very dry? I find it so hard to get the recesses painted without the flat surfaces coming out super dark, and the whole model looking mottled. I guess also the brushes you use, I need to pick up some more like the first brush you were using.
The right tools for the job really make a big difference. Also thinning your paint I'd actually avoid it feeling dry personally and rather aim for just having very little on the brush😊
@@ArtisOpus Thanks for this! I'm still practicing, and it's getting better. I thought thinning paint meant taking most of the paint off the brush, and I'd heard with contrast paint you wanted it fairly thick so it would settle into the recesses, and that the issue I was having was overbrushing it? I'm just really not sure. I'll keep watching videos and practicing, and hopefully I'll figure it out eventually! I'm sure either way I'll need to strip and repaint all my models at some point!
@@ArtisOpus thanks, it's absolutely awesome to get a response on such an old video. Ive got an iron warriors army in your style and now on the way to creating a DA one. If you ever run master classes, sign me up!
Question about the palette you use / sell... Does any of the dried paint ever flake off into the newer wet paint? You have your contrast paint on it and any time I use my plastic palette , anything dried under it starts breaking up and pulling up into it. I think I’m a bit confused by your palette lol. In the store it says to prime it. I think I need one of these.
Hey dude, not unless I've been silly and put new paint on old paint from the same session, that hasn't fully dried yet. I think there's probably a big difference to a primed painted surface and plastic, as it's pretty much the same as a miniature. The one exception is after you've drybrushed over it, where you can get little dusty flecks of paint, I just brush off the pallet to avoid this :). Hope that helps, they really are magic, I can't recommend picking one up enough, you'll find yourself learning a lot about painting using one!
Hey dude, it's our Dampening Pad, it introduces a small amount of moisture to the painting process, which is useful for all the reasons diluting paint in traditional paint is! It encourages smoother applications, and less chalky finishes. Check out our ultimate drybrush guide for some more info, also our flawless airbrush blends video ruclips.net/video/kxuY2NXeI2M/видео.html
I don't find it's much of an issue really, I paint in the coldest area of the house, which helps. If you're somewhere dry and hot a humidifier actually makes a big difference
@@ArtisOpus thank you. I'm very new to this and currently painting 1.2k worth of DA with limited paints (so much so that I often raid my wife's artist paint if I need something). The speed you guys paint at make me green with envy.
Looks awesome mate. What order did you use the paints to get your red details? I really like how the red on the gun looks. Did you do all the gold birts on the model the same way you did the chedt eagle? Thanks.
Hey Billy, it'll sound over simplified but it's really is just the following: Mephiston red Black wash (can be a diluted wash, or black paint +medium/water as I did) Mephiston red again Wild rider red Troll slayer orange (optional)
how about doing a tyranid with a highlighted carapace like a gaunt or bigger like a carnifex!? theres so many people on the tyranids subreddit that could use some inspiration by Artis Opus :)
Yessir! Follow the steps and be careful to not overload your drybrushes (also don't use tiny ones, I would recommend our size Medium or higher). Check out recent content of ours, we've painted a lot of marines, and there's even one on painting faces which is good for beginners

I don't suppose you would let me know what recipe you would use for Ultramarines ? Just ordered the dry brush set 😀 should land tomorrow 😀
And I just discovered you already have one on Ultramarines 🙈
Exactly the same as we did in our Ultramarines tutorial. Take that method's colours and apply them just like we did on the Space Wolf or the Imperial Fist. Let me know how it goes 😊 And thank you so much for your support!
@@ArtisOpus they haven't came yet,, apparently element games is waiting on the stock,,,I can't wait,,it's worse than Xmas lol
what is the mix between the dark angels green and the medium? because i em trying this video out for my first ever army but i keep getting these ugly brush strokes on my model and idk what im doing wrong. got any tips?
I'm just starting out with 40k and my army is Mantis worries, I would love to see how you would paint them.
Hey dude, I've just googled them, what an awesome colour scheme! I'd actually start them pretty close to how I started this guy, I loved the colour mix of xerus and moot :)
I'm considering buying all three sets of opus brushes next week also, they look absolutely amazing.
Woo hooo. Definitely some DA food for thought!
:) Did you enjoy it?
Artis Opus absolutely. Ordered some of the paints to give it a go next week.
maybe your take on orks/orcs? always loved those models
Certainly doing it in the near future, it has been requested a lot! :)
Can I switch the colors for a purple colored armor? Green as a filter for the purple shadows.
Absolutely dude, just pick a nice deep one (Caliban would be perfect) 😊
What are the blue pieces you have in place of the arms?
They're the pegs for attaching the arms :)
How essential is it to mix your own base colour vs using caliban green. Only 5 models in and worried about consistency over a whole army.
It's fine to use Caliban, not a worry, with several processes over the top I wouldn't worry about consistency overly, though :)
What is this sponge in which you dip your brush?
Hey dude, it's our Dampening Pad, it introduces a small amount of moisture to the painting process, which is useful for all the reasons diluting paint in traditional paint is! It encourages smoother applications, and less chalky finishes.
Check out our ultimate drybrush guide for some more info, also our flawless airbrush blends video ruclips.net/video/kxuY2NXeI2M/видео.html
@@ArtisOpus Thanks!
How do you keep the paint from drying on your primed board?
I don't find it's much of an issue really, I paint in the coldest area of the house, which helps. If you're somewhere dry and hot a humidifier actually makes a big difference
If you want to can you use caliban?
Absolutely dude! This is just a format, you can swap in/out any paints you want!
Hi sorry if I'm dense, but this is my first vid with you guys. How did you do the base because the backpack was really really blue
That’s the base plastic showing thru.
@@leereynolds3833 Ah that makes sense im such a muppet
😅It's fine dude. I should have undercoated my model better so it wouldn't be so confusing.
Are you planning on doing a similar video using airbrush techniques? Im trying to uplift my painting skills with a recently purchased airbrush
do you add any protective coats to the final model? and if yes how/what?
Not on plastics buddy, I don't feel there's any reason, unless you want a different finish (satin/matte/gloss)
@@ArtisOpus thank you sir!
Could you do a Deathwing? Please, and thank you!
White Scars and Plague Marines are on the list, Deathwing should follow shortly after :) Thank you too buddy!
when you say the arms are "pressed on" rather than glued, what do you mean?
This model has pegs on the arms, they are pressed on but not glued :)
Dark Angels ftw.
🤘🤘🤘
How would this be applicable without contrasts? Can this be done with just Caliban green etc?
Yeah, you can mix contrast medium with any paint, it has the behaviour you want, or you can glaze traditionally, both work :)
Thanks.
Hey Billy, it'll sound over simplified but it's really is just the following:
Mephiston red
Black wash (can be a diluted wash, or black paint +medium/water as I did)
Mephiston red again
Wild rider red
Troll slayer orange (optional)
@@ArtisOpus thank you.
If Guy Gardener was a Marine...Great job!
I really hadn't though of this until you said it, but you're so right! 😅 Thanks so much bud!
Strange thing to ask but what is that music in the background? It gets stuck in my head every time I watch one of your videos lol
Hey bud, our music is from Bensounds. Royalty - free for artists 😊
How would contrast angle green look over an undercoat of bright silver?
It'd look like a metallic version, check out our ultramarine video for an exact equivalent :)
could this work for brighter colors too? for example space wolves?
Absolutely!
What kind of pad/wet pallet is that?
Same question for the Dry brushes. Look like Army Painter, but not sure.
We're late on this one! It's our drybrushes and palette :)

how about doing a tyranid with a highlighted carapace like a gaunt or bigger like a carnifex!?
theres so many people on the tyranids subreddit that could use some inspiration by Artis Opus :)
That's a really really good idea and a good point, plus we've definitely neglected Tyranid so far. We'll squeeze it in as soon as possible 😊
@@ArtisOpus can't wait, im loving your work as it comes out!
Is it possible for a beginner to achieve this look?
Yessir! Follow the steps and be careful to not overload your drybrushes (also don't use tiny ones, I would recommend our size Medium or higher).
Check out recent content of ours, we've painted a lot of marines, and there's even one on painting faces which is good for beginners
Will this be a full video?
Yes!! Did you watch it? :)
@@ArtisOpus yep watched. Very good. I'm looking to get the brushes how hard are they to clean. I got the "D" set.
