Starting a deathwatch army and this method is perfect to get the armour looking tidy without spending hours building up layers. Thanks for putting great tutorials together!
have you actually tried it? it's way harder than he makes it look in the video. hitting edge highlights with a dry brush is proper pro dry brushing. I'm no slouch when it comes top painting or dry brushing, but hitting the edge highlights with the brush used in this video is extremely difficult. I'm probably just going to paint my highlights on regularly.
it doesn't help that they don't really show you what to do neither. all of the video is sped up so fast you can't follow it. when it actually comes to following it, it becomes way more apparent.
hoping I can find people that have done this scheme to help with some advice. it's way more difficult than I thought it would be. I might end up just manually doing the highlights.
Also I hope that it is able to be knocked back down towards black because after the first stage, it's pretty much blue now.
What did you guys think, would you change anything on the mini? What'd you like to see next/explained in a video?

Hey there, i wondered what product the tufts are!
Not sure i follow the Base Coat - is that a mix of the two or alternative usage of either Huldra Blue or Vallejo 950? I think it would help a lot of people if you stated explicitely in the video what it was primed / base coated with :o
Love it otherwise... actually had a suggesiton what you could pull off but I forgot now... Oh I know classic scheme of Death Guard would be awesome!
Craftworld eldar!!!
Also... the pre-prepared skulls strike again lol :D
By far the best Templar paint tutorial I’ve found thanks pal 👌
Thanks so much, Michael, our pleasure, dude :)
That’s literally the best tutorial for black armor I’ve ever seen. I’m Planung a Sororitas army and searched like a lot for the right armor painting. Love it, best regards Simon
Thanks for the kind words, my man! Best of luck with the sisters! 🥰
have you tried it yet?
it's really blue armour as the first stage is just painting the mini blue. Maybe the varnish really does knock it back so far it turns black again, but until I get to this point and see for myself, I'm dubious at best.
I'm hoping some of the people that have left these comments have actually tried this and had it work like it does in the video, because then maybe they can explain how to do it properly.
Absolutely beautiful mate, one of the nicest smoothest black schemes I've ever seen.
Much appreciated dude! Thanks so much!
I’ve always toyed with the idea of doing the highlights first, and then glazing in the black. Now I know it actually works, cheers!
Yes mate, just depends how bright your mid tone and highlight are, (they need to be brighter). This takes a fair bit of readjustment :)
Clear explanations and stellar execution, really helpful, thank you!
Thanks so much Karl, glad you liked it!
have you used the method in the video yet, please? I'm having a bit of trouble executing it and could do with some more tips.
Perfect video before I start my Black Legion!
Awesome, good luck! 🤞You can show us your progress if you tag us on socials😊
Great vid. As a lover of painting Templars this is an awesome guide to get great results for troops!
Thanks so much Tom! ^_^
Wow ! Fantastic result ! I’m surprised it worked so well over black paint.
Thank you very much for the upload and for finally inspiring me to paint black armor 😊🤘🏻
Cheers
You're most welcome dude, thanks for your support! Let us know how it goes :)
Hi you are one of the easiest painters to follow and understand on RUclips love your work, keep cranking out the vids m8ty.
Super pleased to hear! Thank you so much for your kind words! :)
Yesssss, can't wait for this to start!
Did you enjoy it? :)
@@ArtisOpus loved it mate! Been looking for an easy to follow, smooth Black Templars tutorial as I've never painted them before. Definitely going to give this a try 👍
Finally! Thank you SO SO MUCH!!!
You're so welcome dude! Thank you for the support ^_^
LOVE LOVE LOVE this tutorial, really great look and well within my ability. Thanks a million!
You're most welcome, my dude, great name!
have you used the method in the video yet, please? I'm having a bit of trouble executing it and could do with some more tips.
That's beautiful work! Wow!
Thanks, dude!
Great video, very instructional!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you Chuck! 😊
I only started painting in January and after lots of test models and RUclips videos I finally settled on Black Templars as my main army despite the challenges of the black power armour. I have done 4 test models of templars buying single figures off eBay before I start my combat patrol box and the last technique I tried was this one. I just have to say it's amazing I followed what you did exactly and I couldn't believe that I managed to actually make it look like your model in the video. It really is a fantastic easy method that looks so effective too and now it's made me want to buy your dry brush set as my next purchase.
Can't thank you enough, fantastic video and it's put me in such a good mood seeing the result I've managed to achieve.
the dry brushes are great. I had been using make up brushes previously before Artis Opus came out with these brushes. After getting the D set for myself was amazed at the quality. You can get similar results with make up brushes, but the D set really does make a difference.
Yay more dry brushing and i like the base
Cheers dude, I'm genuinely pleased with how the model turned out! I'll be using that basing scheme elsewhere for sure :)
Great video gang!
Thanks so much! 😊
Awesome video as always Byron. Amazing techniques and really liked the theory at the end.
Keep up the great work!
Hey dude, thanks so much, thought we'd try something different out. The aim of the channel is to really try and equip people with a bit more info for them to go away and raise their understanding, (and therefore enjoyment, hopefully!), and this kind of fits with that, it was the best way to ad-hoc it! Hope you're well :)
@@ArtisOpus always better after one of your tutorials as it reinvigorates my painting mojo haha
@@S2uBuGaming 👨🏼🎨👨🏼🎨👨🏼🎨 Yes, dude! Just need something little to spark it and you're off! Good audiobooks once you've got that initial spark are a great way to keep the momentum!
Great video my friend I really did enjoy your theory at the end of it. I would love to see more like this at the end of your videos maybe like what different colours you would have used.
Thank you very much Jirhon! Great suggestion, I'll certainly be doing this 😊
that is so helpful, over the years I've had injuries to my hands that now makes painting a really painful if I try to have a proper session. the dry brushing is really going to help.
Sorry to hear it dude and so pleased we can help 😊

I've been stumped for doing Black that looks good on my Deathwatch and this is perfect. Thank you for the content.
Our absolute pleasure, let us know in another comment how it goes, or if you run into any issues :) (YT is bad for reply notifications)
have you used the method in the video yet, please? I'm having a bit of trouble executing it and could do with some more tips.
@Local Man I'm actually finally able to do it and am in the middle of it right now.
I found this video just before my semester at Uni started so I've had to wait a couple months.
I've had to adapt for my first go as I'm missing the blush brush and huldra blue but so far the results are looking promising.
Excellent paint job made to look easy. Loved the last bit too
Hey dude, thanks so much! Apart from the damned freehand it wasn't too bad at all actually, lucky cooperative colours helped! Did you message us for your brush set from the great unclean one competition btw? :)
Artis Opus 😱 no I didn’t realise. How do I need to do that? Via email?
I’ve been a bit wrapped up with work and hadn’t realised. Do I email you?
or I can get in touch with my daughters Facebook account? Whichever is easiest for you. This has cheered me up as I’ve just started with tooth ache. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
One of your best guides so far! It looks so good! Thx a lot :)
My pleasure :) Thank you for the support!
Love these. Convinced me to order series D. Would love to see some eldar aspects. 🍻
Thanks so much dude, they'll serve you well :)! Oh, but they're so fiddly and spiky! I wonder what I could do with them...
Thank you emperor of mankind for Artis Opus Black Power Armour drybrushing guide!!!!
You're most welcome Abbi! Hopefully it's useful :)
awsome video. just jumped back into painting after having a stroke last year and these videos have been great help at finding easier more effective ways to paint. am planning on painting black templars and used the artis opus guides to choose paints and brushes although im still saving for the D set dry brushes, anyways love these videos, thankyou.
Hey dude, thanks so much! You could always pick up a single brush (medium, perhaps?) to test it out and see if it's for you?
Please let us know how your hobby journey goes, thanks for the support
@@ArtisOpus good point, i didnt realise they were sold individually. Thanks again :)
Nice result there
Many thanks dude
I know it's never a popular, but I'd love to see an Infinity model done with your methods - working with metal models is a very different medium, so I'd be interested to see how it works.
It's so hard to revert after living that charmed plastic life! Their realistic proportions really make things more tricky too, my heavy hands may end up destroying things :)
Your videos allowed me to crank out some damn good looking Space marines from the Raptor's Chapter. Hoping to order some brushes once my town in Oregon is done being on fire.
Amazing dude! Can I see your raptors anywhere? Sorry to hear about that, we're going nowhere so will be here with sexy brushes when things are a bit less spicy!
One of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen for black armour :) also liked the explaining at the end of the video. I’ll use your technique for my Sisters Of Battle! Would love to see some alien races painted in your style, like Tau or Eldar.
Thanks so much Jan! Tau make a comeback some point soon and I'd love to try some Eldar vehicles, I have a wave serpent build 😊
Artis Opus looking forward to it!
have you actually painted using this method, please? if you have I'd love to hear more about it as I could do with some more advice getting this scheme down.
I am getting my first space marines soon the indomitus box set can’t wait to paint them . Black Templar’s all the way
Amazing dude, happy painting 👨🏼🎨😊
Nice !
Thanks! 😊
Great tutorial. Thjs version of the black template is great.
Crinson fists should be next.
Thanks so much Sean! Your suggestion is already on my list 😊
Just finished my second Ultramarine. Did drybrushing for highlights. You make it look easy!
An explanation of glazes and how to make them and when and why to use them would be awesome.
Thanks for sharing your talent and inspiring me to take up a new hobby!
Thanks so much dude, that's a great call, I think they're easily confused, and can be your best friend, or worst enemy, when used right/wrong!
Amazing work, great vid! Could you possibly make a video on how to prepare a miniature for painting? Exactly, how to dismantle arms and head when painting. Thank you and much respect 👍🏻
Hey dude, in this case the mini just allows for it - it has male/female bits on the joins, which is particularly helpful.
If it didn't I'd have no choice but to paint it all glued, these days we're spoiled by quality of life stuff like this, etc!
Great content again, black is one of those colours that offers a lot of people a challenge (me included!)
I really enjoyed the "theory" section at the end of the video. It's refreshing to see someone take the time to do this.
My suggestion is to do a video for a beginner's "primer", describing/explaining the terms you use for techniques; not all newer painters are well versed in terminology like stippling, blending, or glazing (i still can't work out the difference between a glaze and a wash). Just my 2cents!
Hey Gareth, this is exactly why I mentioned it, I think I could run through a load, perhaps a community post would help me get a comprehensive list, so I don't miss anything out :).
@@ArtisOpus sounds like a plan!
Nice work.
As far as color theory goes, try a demonstration. I've heard and seen how composition can change how the audience perceives a color, so you might go show steps going from one color to finish and highlight how the color appears to change from one step to another.
Hey dude, absolutely, it's just a matter of working out the perfect examples to simplify this enough to properly engage people, and make instant understanding more obvious! I'm thinking about this a lot at the moment (hence me trying out the demo at the end of this) so hopefully I'll figure it out soon :)
The only thing i don't like about the videos is that Facebook-Crafting-Video Music you have going on. Other than that it is great to see how you approach such a model, how you use all the techniques to your advantage and that you tell us, what you are looking for. Keep it up!
Thanks dude, that's exactly what we're going for!
Regarding the music t's used by a popular hardware channel as well it turns out, too many associations for people!
@@ArtisOpus I guess there is a good reason why this music is used so often. Psychology is a huge part in videos that want to be catchy or teach you something.
It was just the first thing that came into my mind when watching your videos (new to your channel)
I love your videos and drybrushing classes. Keep it up and keep Crushing!
Cheers, dude, we'll keep making them if you keep watching :D
I just have to say, interesting decision to have the guy gun straight out but not looking down his sightline! It actually made me laugh.
Anyway, beautiful work. I've got the forgeworld Horus model and have been wanting to paint him up for awhile but I find making black look good is very tedious and difficult. I might try out some of what you did here.
Nice one mate, looks really effective, and gets around the red/orange colours in the base really help get prevent the model from looking like a black and white film! Also, how about a bit more xenos content, maybe a look at how you would approach Ork skin or something like that?
I need to up my skin game, it's definitely something that I am less practiced with! I think there's definitely something I can do with this :)
My suggestion? Iron Hands. I would love to see what you come up with.
Any excuse for metallics and hazards!
If anyone is reading this, and wants to try this scheme. I recommend watching the Salamander video, because Byron goes more in depth about how these kind of techniques are performed. You really need to use the "rolling" technique" to be able to accurately hit the edges. Also something I picked up myself, but if you end up putting the last highlight in too much, you can buffer your first highlight (the Dark Reaper) and tidy it up.
At the moment I am just blocking in the other colours, and then I'm going to varnish and glaze it down. It's definitely more blue than black right now, but this is what we want. You can now add depth to it like you couldn't with flat black. Working from an off black is ideal for doing black IMO. I used to do my black bolter casings in dark reaper on my death guard. This scheme is like a more advanced version of this.
I've had a go at this @awoken8infinite but found on the fenrisian grey, it just looked too chalky and the armour kinda went from a black to bluey grey :(
@@josephbradshaw2825 I've decided to try a more traditional method, as my guys were just very blue, even after glazing down.
it's not like I need a cheat process to paint as I can do edge highlights and stuff.
I love dry brushing, but mainly on more detailed plastics... also it can look great on space marines if you are working with colours.
for black armour it's way more difficult. I think I might end up doing a more traditional scheme for my BT's, especially since vehicles are going to be better in 10th and this scheme will not transfer to vehicles most likely.
I would love to see how you would do a Tyranid model
I'm so up for this, a couple more power armoured dudes and I'll have earned myself something organic 🤗🍻🍻
Terrific video and terrific subject. Black Templar are by far my favorite Space Marine chapter. One thing that's a big draw (at least for me) is the fact that the Black Templar chain their weapons to their hands and arms, so that they won't drop them. It's a bit fluffy, but since we don't yet have a Primaris Templar upgrade sprue with the chained weapons molded as one piece, do you have any suggestions (what scale, where to find, etc.) on how to add chains to the model? As far as video content goes, I for one would love to see more color and contrast theory, as well as some assembly techniques and tricks you may use. Thanks for taking the time to create some content. Already subscribed and I'm looking forward to more! Cheers!
Thanks so much Andrew! ^_^ Try jewelry chains, you'll definitely be getting some assembly stuff very soon. Thank you for the suggestions 😊🤩
Fantastic video as always. I've got the series D brushes sitting there ready to go. Have you made a video that shows you setting up the dampening pad, and overall brush care for the Series D line? Like a starter video on the basics? Don't want to use them till I know exactly how much water is meant to be absorbed into the brush through using the dampening pad and how to properly clean them. Keep up the amazing work!
Hey dude, this'll come out very soon hopefully, we have something in development that's very relevant, so want it to feature. Thanks so much for your kind words!
Dampening pad rules:
- 1 drop of water from the back of the brush
- Work it in with a finger
- Take a 'dry' finger and press it into the dampening pad - you should have a very light - sheen of moisture *no more*.
- Your brush should feel slightly colder to the touch, and not dry.
Use dampening pad before, during, and after painting to remove excess on your pallet.
Hope that helps!
@@ArtisOpus thanks heaps, will keep an eye out. I noticed the Rogue Idol video this morning so as soon as I get a chance I'll be watching it. I really appreciate you taking the time to write this message out. Didn't get notified I got a response! Haha.
Loved this vid dude 🖤
I’ve ordered some of the new Monument Hobbies paints to try out on my new Black Templars. Going with a Dark neutral grey for the black armour to let me use full black in the recesses. Not sure how sensible this is though 🤔
Amazing Dave, I have a huge selection of them that I just got for testing, and am really excited to put them to use, they've historically been impossible to get within the EU!
That could absolutely work, it's all about picking your mid-tone, that Grey has to be the right one for the job (perhaps a little darker than normal).
This video is probably about to get a lot more views.
Let's hope! ;)
why?
I would like to see a mossy forest sytle base/terrain quick video - i have some elriks hobbies bases and i always thought deep forest kinda Mayan theme to them but struggling on the right color workups
This has been requested a lot, I'll do some product research and see what I can come up with!
As I'm doing a Heresy Imperial Fists Army a yellow tank would help greatly, tried following your Wolf vehicle changing colours but did not work out well, Theory at end of vid would be great.
Again thanks for all your hard work.
Cheers dude! Once we've covered a load of the infantry chapters we'll revisit the vehicles... for now you may want to keep your eyes peeled Saturday, if you like yellow tutorials... ;)
@@ArtisOpus Matey you are a star and will be waiting with bated breath for Saturday. One quick question do you have a vid on brush upkeep and using soap I can't find any
This is quality, stealing this for my Ravenwing! When you come to do Dark Angels, do you think I could be cheeky and request that you do a Greenwing and Deathwing scheme? I know you've basically covered blacks for Ravenwing with this video and the black Stormcast video but I think the bone armour of Deathwing is definitely something you could do cool work with and with the new Bladeguard veterans being part of the Deathwing now, all us marine players have lots of new models we need schemes for! :P
There's so many solid schemes for them, and I think they'd each look great! Especially Deathwing could absolutely look legit!
We'll get to them I promise, we seem to be doing a Space Marine scheme every other video currently... so maybe it'll happen sooner, rather than later! :)
Second this. Waiting for Darkangels need some love. Especially deathwing
Also dark angels with darker green. Seems like most of people are painting close to Salamander tones
Hi, love you videos man! Just a quick note for native English speakers, when you are going to pronounce Vallejo, imagine it was written Vayeho
You're of course completely right! I will try to in future vids :)
Soul drinkers next please !!!!
On my list buddy, stay tuned 👀
@Artis Opus
I ordered the 3 x Navigator set last week, around 12:00pm Saturday morning. I spoke to someone via email that said there were issues getting a material needed for the boxes, I think.
I don't know how we missed these mate, sorry!
@@ArtisOpus it's cool. got my brushes a while back, love them.
also might have to buy another set of dry brushes in that Tiger box you just released, really cool.
Do you think you'll do black brushes again for Halloween this year? I'd really like some of those.
Firstly I’ve learned so much from your vids so thank you!
I’m doing Dark Angel’s and watching this for the Ravenwing black. When you do the wash with 950 & Huldra blue, would 950 and DA green contrast or similar give it a vague green tinge? I’d like them to have a hint of green so that they all tie together a bit more? Would I need to start with the green even earlier in the process so there’s a subtle green tinge? Thanks in advance.
Hello AO! Great video. I am wondering if you would make any significant modifications to this scheme if you were doing Raven Guard?
Fantastic tutorial! For Ravenguard rather than Black Templars would you say I’m better suited to doing this using a series of pure greys rather than a series of blue/blue-greys? And if you would say stick to the blue method for a better result do you know the vallejo equivalents to the GW paints you’ve used for the armour here?
Hey mate, if you were to use the streaking grime would you use AK streaking grime in this application instead of normal washing etc would you use the AK streaking grime instead of the blue glaze that you did to armour, or would you still do the cool glaze and then go the warm/cool streaking grime look?
Love your work and I'm trying to get into some oil washes with my dry brushing!🤙🏼
Stormcast eternals...watching how you did the different golds on the shield it would be cool to see the whole model
I'll paint something entirely gold at some point of the future most likely😊
Yay black Templars.

Awesome paint work! After the dry brushing stage do you touch up the flat black armour panels or did you utilise the wash you made to create a gradient?
It's all the wash and the drybrush combine as perfect partners dude. You can wash multiple times if you want to take things further than I did though 😊 Good question!
What did you do to darken the armor? After the dry brushing you jumped straight to the white
Woohoo! I love seeing how different people do black templars. Loving this one I must say. The cross came out super good. I was wondering if you'd get some huldra blue in the black armour :P I like the little debrief at the end of the vid. So after dark angels its Grey Knights right? :P
Cheers Bevan! There is huldra blue in the black armour :D it's the secret to the paint job working :D.
Dark Angels Vs Grey Knights Vs White Scars Vs I make up a cool (metallic?) scheme is the current Power Armour debate :)

@@ArtisOpus as always fantastic work been using this black armor scheme on my deathwatch
TBH I had a hard time hitting the edges for the edge highlight. I realized after that maybe I was using the brush wrong though, and probably needed to use the side more. I might just go for more traditional edge highlights though as I know I can do them. Shame though man as was hyped to do this method.
Looks epic. I'm a scrub and when I try dry brushing highlights I end up with a really streaky look. Any quick tips?
Hey dude, thanks so much! Sounds like you got a wet brush to me, this could be too much water or too much paint. Make sure you remove excess and test on your texture palette before going to the model. Let me know how it goes 😊
Sorry for the late comment. I just want to say that this is a great tutorial...maybe the best I've seen for Black Templars. As a newcomer, I really appreciate that you show alternative ways of painting than just straight Airbrush like many other creators. I am definitely not at the point where I can buy one, but I want to get better and videos like this help me a lot.
I have one question though - after you applied the drybrush...did you apply some shade and/or varnish? The model looks darker and you can't really see the excess paint on the flatter (and round) areas that was there before. This is my biggest struggle with drybrush - how did you get rid of it? Thanks a lot and please keep up the amazing work!!
Hey dude, thanks so much for your kind words and support! Hope you're well!
This guy had a careful wash all over, but concentrating on recesses containing Huldra Blue which is a very deep dark blue😊
@@ArtisOpus but that wash was what? Huldra Blue wash only? Or some mix?
I'm wondering if this technique can be applied to dreadnoughts at all? They are the largest minis I have for Templars. I assume you just have to leave in more black?
With my first Crusaders I have buffed on the Dark reaper, just leaving the black in the recesses and some of the bits where there would be shadow. After we apply the varnish does this naturally darken up all of the armour again, as it appears this way on the video. I also imagine that with the glazing/wash step this will help bring it back towards black again, also? I'm wondering if I should actually do a pass of glazing before the varnish is applied in order to add some more depth, or am I best off just waiting till I have added the varnish?
I ask because I've never actually used varnish in this way before, and worried that once the varnish is applied, it might be more difficult to actually add depth in the places I want it. Will it lie properly on top of the varnish? I assume painting on top of the varnish isn't an issue?
Great video! I´m a bit condused though. The base color of the mini is vallejo black mixed with huldra blue? Or is it just vallejo black?
I know that they are similar on paint scheme, but I'd still love to see you paint a Raven Guard figure.
We're just working our way through the main ones, secondary ones will follow in future 😊
Hey they're a founding chapter, black templars are secondary! (◕દ◕)
@@ArtisOpus the hell are you on about corax is a primarch
Did you you’d the black and huldra blue glaze at the beginning? Or just a mix of both paints without the glaze?
My god those lenses are incredible! How did you do them?
Thank you so much! I did them exactly the same way as in our Ultramarines video: ruclips.net/video/6v5IXAln0MI/видео.html
Great video!
I tried doing my necrons black armour highlighting using the blues similar to this. Technically i think it was well painted but it didnt look good next to the classic green glow of the necron weapons. Would this technique work if i used say eshin grey working up to ulthuan instead of the more blue based highlights?
My nucrons scheme is essentialy black templars but on a necron -white skulls, black armour plates, boltgun metal metallic parts and the classic necron neon green weaponry. It looks good on the default warriors but the character models have more details and im struggling with colour theory to understand what colours to paint their extra bits like the headdress and so on.
Hey dude, check out our How to Paint Black Armour tutorial (stormcast model), it uses pretty much exactly what you're describing, and looks great!
My default in situations exactly like the colour scheme dilemma you've described is to do 1 of two things:
1 - Borrow colours used elsewhere (just like my base/details here sharing word bearers red)
2 - Metallics that 'aren't colours' - you can put a load of detail into silvers washed a couple of times, and get real depth and contrast, but they don't have a colour value, so you can basically never go wrong! Same with Black/Bone/White/Light Grey etc.
Let me know how it goes :)
good work, i need white scars ;)
Cheers bud, White Scars, Dark Angels, and Grey Knights seem to be top of the frequently requested list!
cause you asked for it would love a badmoonz ork vehicle/komando /nob/meganob ect. tutorial love the video my guy definitely have a sub from me
Thanks, buddy! Mhhmmm... With the new yellow contrast being so good maybe it is time for some Orky goodness... 🤔
@@ArtisOpus I wait with anticipation thanks for what you do my guy
Do the principles of the wash work with any paint scheme? Would they work with your dark angels method?
Absolutely dude, it's a real magic step, especially subtly on power-armour
Just needs a paints used list 😂😂
This is the exact look I wanted for my black armour, Artis Opus! Could this translate to vehicles? If there anything you would change in the process?
Hey dude, great question! Not hugely, you can take a bit more time, be a bit more careful, if you want it black *resist* the urge to use too much grey until the very edges.
If you make the wrong bits grey, washes are your friend, don't worry :).
Hope that helps - perhaps watch our 2 recent drybrushing videos on Star Wars pieces (ultimate guide, flawless blends) - these may give you an idea on how to approach larger pieces, however as I said black needs discipline, to not turn grey!
Really glad I seen this. I'm getting the D set next week, and I'm doing black templars. I was actually going to use stippling to apply volumetric highlights, but this would be incredibly time consuming (I would assume) so this method is probably better for my Crusaders and other rank and file, and I can do the volumetric highlights on my characters.
Did you use a small for all of this? I might get a 2nd small so I have a "new" one for doing my final highlights. I know I'm getting a free size 2 with my order though, so maybe the 2 will be fine for the first 2 steps?
Also mate, was the scale 75 "huldra" an alt to dark reaper, or another colour you used on this please?
And lastly, do you know what the equivalent is to the spray varnish you used in the pots? (I have them both, I just know that ones way more gloss than the other one)
Sorry for the delay dude.
I just drop down if I need access/smaller head for dotting, so the small generally only comes out on infantry if I am shading, or doing a kneecap, etc.
Size 2 is great, 3 is my personal fav if you're going for a one size fits all megabeast :)
Huldra was mixed a little in with the vallejo black to deepen and send to 'off-black' at the basecoating stage :).
Which timestamp for the varnish?
Appreciate this is very delayed, but better late than never!
@@ArtisOpus Thanks for reply.
it was the munitorum varnish, I have some now.
I ended up getting 2 x 1's (bought a 2nd) but I'm thinking about buying a 2nd D-set with the tiger box... I was going to hold out and see if you did the D's in black for Halloween this year though, as I'd definitely buy those.
I actually really like the size #2 M brush as well. I think some larger sizes in those would be great.
Also do you guys think you will ever release boxed set with larger brushes in? like 3 - 5 I imagine would be great to have.
I am used to Raph's mainly which are bigger in size than other brushes, so it's a process getting used to painting with smaller brushes. There is definitely a lot of detail work that be achieved with the smaller brushes for sure though, but I still like my wide bodied brushes for a lot of work.
Maybe a set that contains some larger S and M brushes would be a cool idea. I'm sure a lot more people would appreciate this too.
Awsome tutorial! Now i really want those brushes :D
But i still cant understand when and how you are using that Huldra Blue...
P.s What paint would be a good equivalent? Pref. gw.
Hey dude, I'd maybe mix a strong contrast blue in with a dark blue, it's the saturation you need.
It's a little in the basecoat (non-essential) but mostly in the wash stage - you can see the mix in my white palette in the background
Could you use SCALE75 - DEEP BLUE instead of Huldra + Black mix?
Hello! i like your tutorial but I have a very big problem. I have problems to get this all colours.... can you call me the same colour for GW Paints or GMC? And if I use GW colours, is it possible to get the same resault?
What is the pot were you submerge the brush? And what does it have in it?
Would love to see some Orcs 40k or AoS.
I do need to give the greenskins some love on the channel💚
@@ArtisOpusI think a Mawcrusher would take to dry brushing quite exquisitely.
could i use this for cadian armor you think?
Absolutely dude!
Alpha Legion would be cool since you asked. Thanks.
Can you explain why you wanted some blue in the wash? the lowest areas of the model was black, meaning you are tinting the recess to be less black, wouldn´t it make more sense to go black for this stage? If it is overpowering the blue tinting you laid down you would just do the wash weaker instead? Please share your thoughts, i love your style of painting!
Cheers dude! Its all about the depth of the colour. It shouldn't work but it does and is something you can exploit to your advantage 😊
@@ArtisOpus did your base coat have some of that scale 75 blue in it as well? as that name comes up at the start of the video, and I couldn't work out why. I thought maybe that your base coat was actually a mix of this blue and black?
Came because of Kirioth, stayed because you have high quality videos. Can't afford your brushes because I've been laid off twice from Covid-19 but I can give you a like and a comment. Cheers mate.
Dude, that sucks, so sorry, it's been an impossible period to navigate as a business, and we're practically selling self-isolation kits! Your kind words and views are much appreciated! Hope you're well
Great turn out and I like your own mix for the armor wash. Question..Do you clean your dampening sponge or do you just change it out after awhile?
As long as you let it fully dry between uses it basically never needs replacing :). Mid session I flip it over sometimes.
The most important step is to let it dry with the lid off, with the lid on you invite bacteria, although it is a pro-sterile sponge.
@@ArtisOpus Got it! Yeah didnt think about that part. Thanks for the info and the added tip!
I may be missing something. Is the model an overall coat of the Vallejo Black to begin?
It's a vallejo black, with however much huldra blue you like (I used enough to just tint it to 'off-black'), personal taste though.
I don't have any of your wash stuff. Could you substitute with medium and Black Templar contrast?
That should work out fine dude! It's just about adding a bit more depth really
Was the base colour 1:3 huldra to black? you can't really see the blue at all I don't think (just tried it myself) You think maybe a bit more blue in it? or is it not supposed to look blue at this stage?
Maybe the blue tint will show up better once other colours are added on top. It;s like I could see it when the paint was wet, but it dried just looking like a glossier black than the chaos black rattlecan
PS: I used the same vallejo black and the huldra blue from scale 75 (so same colours as the guide) I can't go any further till I get my brush sets from you guys though. fingers crossed you get the stock in to build the cases soon.
Hey dude :). The aim isn't necessarily for a blue black per say... It's an off black that is deep, so even if the blue isn't mega noticeable, it is still doing work.
The upcoming dragon rider has another take on the method, perhaps it will be useful, basically midnight black satin 'batsuit' style finish, I really like it, and it doesn't take too long at all.
When did you order? Let us know in another comment, RUclips isn't good for ongoing convo notifications!
@@ArtisOpus Thanks. I'll be sure to check that out.
Been meaning to get some of those Marvel minis as well.
EDIT: ah you said "dragon Rider" I thought you said "Ghost Rider" for some reason (might have been the batman reference that made me think of comics)
Hey! awesome result. What colors did you use for trim lights?
Hey dude, the highlights on the trim, or the lights themselves? :)
@@ArtisOpus the highlights on the trims of the black armor, sorry for the vague question xD
What ratio of Huldra Blue to Vallejo Black do you use for the initial base coat?
Hey dude, just to taste, it's quite potent, so 1:3 or 1:4 is probably fine!
Brush brush!
👨🏼🎨🤩
So is your base coat a mix of Vallejo Model Color 70.950 and Scale 75 Huldra blue , what ratios did you use? Also did you use a primer under that ? I'm completely new to painting warhammer and would love to emulate your style as the end result is outstanding !
Hey dude, no worries, thank for the kind word :).
Honestly over black the ratio doesn't matter too much, as long as it isn't too blue! The most important step is th evarnish (monutorum spray varnish) and the blue wash to pull things back, it's controllable so you can go as strong/light as you like, hope that helps!
@@ArtisOpus Brilliant, thank you so much for your reply !
@@Zeblin94 it's like 1:3 for huldra to black, mate.
Hi there, Can you confirm which is the first paint you used for the blue drybrush? I bought a bottle of Huldra blue from scalecolor but it seems far far darker than the first blue applied here? Did you add white to this? Thanks so much for this tutorial though!
dark reaper. he uses huldra mixed with black for the basecoat, then again for the glaze.
