A good friend is an autocross addict, having owned a few super cars and went back to a Miata. Basically he said the super cars are so well engineered they aren't any fun until 100 mph and you are either going to jail or going to wreck. When things get this refined it's either boring or dangerous LOL. My GS is the most powerful bike I've owned and I have to constantly check my speed as it is, these bikes are best left to RUclips for me. Always great to see a vid from you Chops.

Think this one is for me… crazy, tech laden, high spec suspension, wheels, brakes etc, smoother than a twin, road riding body position, ok MPG and good range (looking at you Aprilia), very powerful… yet reliable (looking at you KTM) and not as crazy a price (looking at you Ducati) and not boring (looking at most Japanese brands)

Yeah I have to agree, the riding position on this bike is perfect for the street. I wish every naked bike was more sporty like this bmw. I would have kept my MT-10 if it was sporty like this bike and not so damn upright. I hate sitting upright on sportbikes, looks and feels wrong.

You need more forward position to combat the wind.....even over 80 the wind can be annoying....over 100 it's uncomfortable.....

We've had the Competition model since it's delivery in April. It's a surprisingly versatile bike considering all the crazy hp. It handles soooo well and with that rear wide tire, it's crazy stable. You can't see anything in the mirrors due to vibration. My husband can ride it all day, but after an hour or so I can feel the vibration soreness in my hands.

If I owed one, I don't know which would happen first; killing myself, or losing my license. This bike is clearly not for me. I just purchased a 2023 Speed Triple RS and I think it's got too much power to be sensible. However, I can control it as it has a rather soft bottom end. In the end, it's a great time to be a motorcycle lover. If I were maybe 20 years younger (I'm 66) I'd give this M a try. I'm totally addicted to acceleration! But at my age, I know my limits. Don't get hung up on hp numbers, torque and gear ratios is what makes a bike accelerate like a loon, higher hp give more top speed. I ride a 23y/o ZX9r, around 140 hp stock and still does 0-60 in 3 secs (again that is stock, who keeps them stock lol). It is very strong on the first touch of the throttle in any gear (I'm always looking for 7th because it still pulls so hard), then goes warp speed around 6-7k rpm. It still does 170mph no problem too, and definitely doesn't need to be able to go 200+ mph.

Great video. I just viewed a video of UK based company tuning the M1000R with an ECU flash which remedied the bike's fuelling issues at low speeds and also its power delivery issues. I saw another video of a guy riding one at high speed that showed off the front end stability issue you mentioned. He speculated that fitting the aftermarket Öhlins damper might remedy things.

Prices of these nowadays is ridiculous. I must be in the wrong trade because there's NO WAY I could afford one on my wage.
Closed loop is monitoring and adjusting fuel.
Open loop is reading from a map.
Wideband sensor is reading the full AFR with a signal of 0-5V.
Narrowband sensor is reading the AFR but with a narrower signal voltage of 0-1v. Less accurate.
So a wideband sensor is the way to go.

I'd need to set the suspension to the softest settings possible with this bike. I now weigh only 8 stone 11 undressed, after carelessly getting a large garlic clove stuck sideways down my gullet last week. In the 1970's the default spring rates for bikes were almost always too soft, whereas nowadays rock hard seems to be the thing, even for bikes with less sporting pretensions. Incidentally, cold set tyre pressures of 36 front 42 rear are too hard for me also. 33 and 39 is a lot less jarring.

The algorithm is working, because I took one of these on a demo ride today. I've ridden most of the Japanese 1,000cc naked bikes, but I've never ridden any of the S1000 series bikes before, so why not jump right into the deep end and try the M? The engineers at BMW were so busy asking if they could, they didn't stop to think if they should! 🤣 What an insane experience. I was smiling the whole time, I forgot how to say anything except "holy shit!" and hours later I'm still keyed up.

My 1700 VMax produces like roughly 180 rwhp. Never tested though. Doesn't matter.
No wheelie control, no traction control, no cruise control, no quick shifter and no drive mode. It's you and the bike. Old fashion but power and torque like hell. Torque from 1000 rpm, revving up to 10.000 rpm.
Much, much more than ANYONE would ever need on ANY road. Having it on German roads, I also topped the Max (factory limited at roughly 230 kph) on the Autobahn.
Even with 100kg more than the BMW it accelerates faster to 140 kph than the 207hp BMW. Far from aggressive riding position. V4 engine sounds better than any Inliner...
Shaft drive keeps maintenance low, prices for used ones are extremely high - no wonder.
The BMW will be replaced by a more sophisticated more high tech bike in couple of years and no one will remember that bike, it is just one stone in the line.
The VMax (or the Rocket R3) will be noticed as unique bikes even in decades.

Whilst it is more than is needed for the road, since when have bikes been a purely practical decision? I buy a bike because of several factors - the way it looks, the way it sounds, comfort, the feeling of freedom and the occasional naughty twist of the wrist. Regardless of if I use all the available power or not, it’s never been a consideration when selecting a bike. There’s a minimum amount of power I’d accept, but I’m not bothered by maximum power. If it ticks all the boxes for what I want, I’ll buy it even if I’ll never use it to its full potential. How many people can truthfully say they can use a bike with 130+ bhp to its full potential on the road without being completely irresponsible? It’s simply not something that anyone really considers for the road and nor should it be. The only time it might be something to think about is for a commuter, but you don’t buy a bike like this just for commuting.

Yes chops it is a hard ride not explored all the settings yet so maybe I need to look at other modes just used road and dynamic so far. Great summary. It's an awesome machine & seemingly a bit of a Jekyll & Hyde. It's quite a feat of engineering to make it so civilised & an equally demented beast.. By definition it has to be too much in terms of ultimate performance but for real world use, it doesn't have to be because of it's refinement. Although what's the point of just pottering about on something like this other than because you can & it's cool (which might be enough)? Also if you're getting it to go on track, why wouldn't you just get the RR? I suppose it's like owning a Ferrari or Lambo, it's just cool & owning it, let alone riding it, is enough to justify having it.

Absolutely fantastic review, this has really helped me, as I have finally decided that my new bike is going to be a BMW RR or R. The problem I’m having is that I have sports bikes in the blood, but at 42 and big build, the guy on my right shoulder is saying consider the R, but I don’t want to buy the R and regret it. However, maybe the more aggressive characteristics of M1000R over the standard R will give me the best of both, but with a more comfortable and suitable riding position. Lots to think about, guess I just need to test ride them and see what makes me smile the most. However, your review has pretty much made up my mind. Thank you 😊

    The question is:
Should we wait for mxr or just get a multi pp? Considering the mxr vs sxr will likely be the same as Mr vs sr.
Wasn't a fan of sxr: competent, capable, decent handling, comfortable enough, smooth engine and qs, hard to pick faults with other than a little bit of buzzing, not the best brakes or suspension, horrid sounding engine with zero power and zero response in the lower half of the rpm range compared to the tuono v4, and zero sensation of speed, zero fun, didn't matter if I pushed it in the corners or revved it out more, I had higher numbers on the speedo with more lean angle, but didn't feel anything at all, there was no character or personality to it.
I do like the engine and chassis in normal multi v4 (just not the big front wheel or ergos, or the extra weight/size, pikes peak fixes all), older pikes peak felt good, but I didn't gel with the 1200/1260 engines.
    The other question is:
Will Ducati give us a multistrada sp with the desmosedici stradale instead of granturismo, carbon wheels, dry clutch, more carbon, and full akra as a response to mxr? 😂

I agree with some of the comments on this. I love this bike but if it comes with anti wheelie multi stage traction control ect to make it rideable and safe then it's way too much power. I think 130 bhp at the wheel with a shit tonne of torque is enough for the road. I commented on the new daytona and said triumph should have made a detuned 1200rr engined version 130 at the wheel and 120ft lbs of torque at say 3500rpm is the sort of road bike I need. 207 bhp is too much ......
