Nashville is such a great film, and Ronee Blakley really steals the show among the superb cast for me as the beautiful, talented, troubled Barbara Jean. When I saw in the credits that she wrote all of those great songs I was stunned! What a talent.

Ronee Blakely who was oscar nominated that year should have one imo. Lily Tomlin was also nominated, both wonderful, but imo Blakely the best performance. Karen Black and Geraldine Chaplin should have been nominated as well. The movie was also nominated for best picture and best director and should have won both, especially best director for Bob Altman

I got a chance to meet Miss Blakely at a convention in San Francisco that I was fortunate to work catering and very much behind the scenes. She was not only charming but had a lot of class. I felt bad because I was one of the few people there who actually knew who she was. As I mentioned her performance in this film to her- she was genuinely flattered.
    Classy woman.

That's very cool that you met her. And it doesn't surprise me that she was charming and had class. It just comes thru in her music and acting. I don't get why she isn't better known. I think she is ultra talented and quite lovely. Her performance in Nashville breaks my heart, everytime.

I agree, check out my reply, opinion above. Ronee Blakely who was oscar nominated for best supporting actress definitely should have won or perhaps since the lead actress category that year (unlike the great supporting category) was pretty slim, Ronee could have, should have gotten an oscar nomination for best lead actress. Great, great film, great performance. Altman who was also nominated for an oscar-for best director- should have won.

@@randallknapp7528 I sensed that she was a really very nice person. Check out the you tube - lee grant wins oscar best supporting actress march 1976, it shows the other four nominees and Ronee looks the happiest, most humble and proud to be recognized. Imo should have won best supporting actress oscar or been oscar nominated for best lead actress since her part, role is so pivotal to the film

Such a great sequence. Ronee Blakely had to do so much in this scene: she had to be fully believable as the single most talented and loved star in all of Nashville, and she has to be irritating and crazy and incredibly pathetic ("Ever since then I've been workin'...") simultaneously, and she more than pulls it all off. One of the greatest performances ever captured on film.

I must have really great taste, because even back at oscar time march 1976 I said to everyone I knew who also loved this film - I worked in a movie cinema in NY when in senior year in high school and four years of university- I said this is who I would vote for best supporting actress Ronee Blakely 1st choice; 2nd place Lily Tomlin also Nashville; 3rd place Lee Grant -Shampoo and for 4th and 5th place I think the other two nominees were not nomination worthy - pretty good but not great - Sylvia Miles in Farewell My Lovely; Brenda Vaccarro for the awful film Once is Not Enough. Instead of the last two my feeling is the other two nominees should have been - 4th place Geraldine Chaplin, Nashville; 5th place Karen Black, Nashville; so imo four of the supporting actress nominees that year should have been from Nashville with Ronee Blakely winning, just my opinion

What's especially interesting is Altman (who was frankly kind of exasperated with her) just turned this sequence over to Blakely, and she wisely chose that frantic opening song that sounds on the verge of a breakdown, anyway....then opened up her voice and character with the soulful ballad, AND she wrote the monologue that follows it herself just the night before while suffering a genuine FEVER! So it's like...wow, that is artistic INSTINCT, and possessing the trained instrument to DELIVER! It's a really brilliant presentation of character. Also the band didn't know she was going to keep interrupting the intro to the third song to talk, so their bewilderment is real : )

This scene was filmed at one of the live entertainment stages at Opryland. It was a wonderful amusement park with lots of really good live entertainment in addition to all the rides. It closed and is just a memory. They used to have a Star of the Day in the new Grand Ol' Opry house near the entrance to the park. They would give about a half hour show several times during the day. The day we were there in the 70s it was Dolly Parton. It was the first time I saw her in person (but not the last) and her song, Jolene, was a big hit. She was magic and I fell in love with her as she personally connected with each one in the audience..
I love the film Nashville and Ronee Blakely (she was magic, too) is one the reasons.

I bought "Nashville" on DVD a couple of years back. Had to import it as it is not available in England. The main reason was to see Ronee Blakely's performance once more. As "Nashville" has no central star, it has always been an oddity, but I still think that she stole the movie, closely followed by Lily Tomlin. "Dues" still moves me - the stand out track - and she wrote it herself (as did all of the 'singing' cast). MAGNIFICENT as Barbara Jean. Great post, thanks

There were three great films released in 1975. Jaws made all the money. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next swept the Oscars. And Nashville. My all time favorite film. Blakley only missed getting the Best Actress Oscar because of Louise Fletcher's legendary performance in Cuckoo's Nest. Ronee Blakley was an aspiring songwriter and backup singer, who signed on with Altman mainly to write some songs. Barbara Jean was the last one cast and at the last minute, Ronee got the role. Although Nashville has 24 main characters - well maybe 20, a few of them don't have much to do - Barbara Jean is the most memorable. Maybe... there's Lily Tomlin sneaking out for a quickie with Keith Carradine who thinks he's using her but it's clearly the other way around. I got the DVD almost 20 years ago, and I had seen it twice before - stoned in a theater back in 76 or 77, and a really bad VHS sometime in the 80s. It was like I was seeing it for the first time and as the final credits died out, I had an overwhelming urge to watch it again. Because I already missed all the characters, I felt like I was part of the story. Next evening, I watched it again and then began a little tour, inviting friends over, or going to their places to watch it yet again. Like many great things, it captured a moment in time, overcame obstacles... 80 hours of film to edit! Yow! The editor of this film deserves an all-time Oscar. But awards are bullshit anyway. I love a lot of movies but until I rediscovered this masterpiece in 2000, I couldn't name a favorite. It's still #1 to me 20 years later and 45 years after it was made.

Yes this is a masterpiece. Ronee Blakely was oscar nominated for best supporting actress, as was Lily Tomlin Lee Grant won for Shampoo. I would have voted for Ronee Blakely. It's like when you walk into a shop, or a museum, and the people who come in with you end up being with you all the way through your visit, whether you like it or not. IMO, Nashville helped nurture the Alt-Country movement. Ironically- Alt Country is truer to REAL Country music, not fake Pop stuff they play on the "Country" stations of today. Im not sure how Country was in the 70s, but I like most of it. Its better than it is now. I think BJ represents Loretta Lynn- but in a complimentary way. She is Americana, and innocent. Notice she always wears white throuhghout the film.

To the hell with politics and all. I never watched Altman's masterpiece for its "message", but just for the featured music, which happens to be the classic early 70es Nashville sound, which has never been surpassed. With the notable exception of the progressive folk singers in the movie. "I'm easy", e.g., just sounds stale to me now. Today I can't watch a minute of the CMA awards, so have turned to Bluegrass.
