I remember seeing Mat Hoffman, Dennis McCoy, and Dave Mirra at the state Fair in Texas in the early 90s. I was about 11 years old and thought it was the coolest thing at the time, there was no internet and the only way we had to watch people ride was still photos in magazines.
@@NickWixx yeah I was lucky enough to have played both and I agree , they both are great games and very fun but mat Hoffman was crazy with the tricks and the second game was good to so many cool riders and the flat land stuff was crazy , I’m glad I got to play games like that as a kid , my first game with my ps2 was Dave Mirra , I always remember the slim Jim guy you can play as , also RIP Dave
Dude's this is awesome! Mat Hoffman is a legend! That ACL surgery in Canada is definitely my favorite story. Mat is so awesome he's signing autographs and sending them out with hb orders. I got one and cherish it. Thanks for everything you did for bmx. And thank you to the other gentleman for making ride BMX. I bought them alot. As a matter of fact I would buy a issue and cut out logos from ads inside to make my own stickers for my bike and helmet haha.
I'm only just seeing this video now, but you really need to make a full series of these. It seems like Mat has so many stories you could probably do dozens of episodes. You've only just covered the early 90s, so could go back and do some of the early stuff in the 80s and then some of the later 90s stuff. Huge Hoffman fan for years and its great to hear some of the stories behind the riding.
Matt is a legend he risked limb and life to push or sport forward. Who knows where BMX would have been now without him. Such a tremendous force for good in vert riding. When I was a teenager I would watch and be like nobody does what he does. Even a trick as basic as a cancan he would extend it so far it would become a masterpiece aerial. Much love and respect to Matt.
I´m titerally in tears... I have soo much love for you Mat, risking it all for the passion of riding! Btw: Brad, Go and Ride mag was the bible for us back then, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
There has never been such a huge shift in any action sports as when matt hit the scene, he was just on another level to everyone, night and day apart. When his vert domination wasn't enough, he builds big air and gets towed !!!! Remember this was all before phones and Internet. It was mid blowing. 🙌🙌🙌
I couldn't believe the pics in mags until I saw him rip the vert ramps apart @ Madison Square Garden (7/1986) AFA comp....all hail the one and only 👑....CONDOR
@1:09 I think that's the most famous photo in all of BMX. I rode ABA from 89 - 93 and knew a couple of the S&M riders who schooled me in Hoffman. Although he wasn't my pick for best BMXr, that honor goes to Allen Foster, he's a legend.
I met Mat Hoffman at the Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma right before The Descendants came on stage. What a epic night for me. I will never forget it!!!!

Matt Hoffman is a legend & a true pioneer. Most youths today don’t even know who he is, he’s the guy that invented the majority of the trucks they’re trying to land/pull off. Remember watching Mad Matt on MTV in mid 90s. My pal, who is just naturally talented & pretty good at whatever he try’s bmx skateboard snowboard skiing whatever watched Mad Matt & ordered a Hoffman BMX. We are in U.K. & he paid just over £1600 for it back then. Obviously shipping & duty included. Still nearly as much as I paid for my first car, & def more than he paid for his first car which was a Lada he was gifted for free. Another of our pals was an official factory Raleigh mountain bike rider, Zoff had offers from lots of manufacturers/builders, but Raleigh gave by far the best deal, properly looked after him, & used to throw bikes at him all the time to try out. He always had the latest & best, even prototypes. We were all well envious.. Few of our other pals were involved in the scene & used to travel the world to race. A couple had Raleigh as a sponsor, they were good locally, but in America the Kellogg’s Championships ect, elsewhere in Europe & U.K. they never got anywhere, just weren’t good enough. We had some good times. We had a BMX dirt track built right on our doorstep where we literally lived. One of our pals Mums run a team, & got the funding & permission to build the course. In the late 90s everyone had lost interest. The races & club had disbanded years prior & the track just drew the undesirables. It became a well known local trouble spot, some bad crimes were committed there, so the council & police got it tore down, which is sad because there’s few places for kids/youths to go that don’t cost lots of money, and it was the only BMX track in our area. At its height it was a place people travelled to from all over. I lost touch with the lads in that scene years back. We all grew up, got jobs, married & had families. Good to see Matt still rippin shit up. Surprised Matts body held up all these years, after all the bad injuries he sustained. Comes with the territory, though. Didn’t realise Matt was the first to land a double somersault on his bike, everyone thinks it was done at the X Games by Mirra?? Hoffman IS & ALWAYS will be THE MAN!! Seems like forever ago I started following him as a young teen.
Wow. Mat Hoffman. This person is both sky high on his way of living, yet sooooo down to earth. Funny thing. I can listen to him forever. Big book of wisdom. Great interview Vital Bmx.
This is the best thing I've seen on RUclips for a while. Ron Wilkerson and Mat Hoffman were such huge inspirations to me and helped me learn the mindset of always progressing and not paying attention to what people thought. I was fortunate to compete with Mat in Ron's back yard at 2hip finals, then years later to compete in one of Mat's early BS contests in Lake Owen, Wisconsin. The sport at that point was "dead" but within the sport it was the most exciting time to see Mat, the Hoffman team, Jay Miron all going crazy. Mat's influence on BMX is perhaps only matched by Bob Haro's as far as importance to the freestyle movement. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Wow I never knew Matt was a truck driver. I grew up with a father who drove them started his own company down the road. I worked side by side with him for around 15yrs. STILL love hearing stories like Matts about the weight stations and dodging them,lol.. I received more stitches and staples riding BMX then I ever did riding or racing ATV's professionally.
He wasnt a truck driver so much as he drove his own truck show to show. You still have to weigh your load no matter what youre hauling. Even if no load is present. He just used it to haul his ramp.
Brad! I loved Go mag!!! I been into bikes for over 35 years now.. watched Matt from grom days. You are both true pioneers and dedicated for life. Respect. This was good to watch. The legendary Ramp truck! Had a pic of it on my wall for years.
We all missed you and your old day’s of riding BMX Haro freestyle bicycle since your old day’s. You’re a simply legend nonetheless. You’re contributions towards BMX freestyle bicycle tricks and BMX is awesome and an inspiration to all who are into the world 🌎 🌍 of freestyle BMX bicycle tricks nonetheless. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I know he absolutely won't remember but one of the biggest thrills of my life was street riding in downtown Portland Or. with Mat and a bunch of other guys. It was after the 88' or 89' AMA freestyle Masters. God that was awesome!
He was here in Australia for a competition back in 1991. During the comp he slightly bent one of his knee saver bars and I was lucky enough to end up with it. He's always been my biggest idol✊
Go Magazine was such a great rag I am a photographer, Brad's photography along with Spike Jones, made me love photography. Matt jumped my brother bike at an abandon Pheonixville BMX track when I was 14.He was hanging with the plywood hoods Matt told my dad, who was doing math equations on the side of a track that I jumped pretty good for a kid my age.
That was awesome. Great trip back in time. Remember every part of the "hoffman story" Never forget the time i had the chance meeting him and DMC at the skate contest Münster Monster Mastership Germany. We drove 8 hours from Denmark just to meet him. Sadly the halfpipe broke down the day before. So no vert riding. Anyway, just meeting him and see him, and DMC trying flip-whips over at tiny box was legendary.
It would be fantastic to also hear about production during the ramp room years, especially 1994, 1995, including the transition to in-house production from s.e., difficulties encountered, condor serial numbers debates, including the decision to include serial numbers and then remove them again, then include them again (etc), the number of frames produced, actual reasons for gradually tweaking the frame geometry, the different production stages and people involved at each stage, that they were all riders, etc. More generally, any discussion and elaboration on the info here bmxmuseum.com/reference/3428 would be hugely valuable. This is extremely valuable stuff to have on camera. Thank you so much for this interview.
This was amazing, thank you two so much for this. The ball piercing story was def my fav !!!!!! XD you guys dont even realize how much you did for BMX and for me personally, thanks again. o7O707
I'm 38 and I keep getting told to give it up! Knees pritty much dinked to death, scars broken bones but, nothing can really compare to hitting a ramp in style, women might come second as I love riding my first choice! 😂❤ love mat he keeps me going
Please do more of these. Obviously call Vic Murphy and let’s talk about the greatest photo ever taken in Bmx and it ain’t the ride cover haha loved this thanks so much for it. Both of you are legends
Always loved matt, I wish that we could have the chance to get Dave mirra give us a modern day interview, such a shame, matt, Dave, dmc and voelker were my favourite riders.
Hoffman and Larry Bird my only 2 fellas that have lasted from teen to middle age, still real deal idols. All the others were a joke when i got older. Oh and Tom Petty

So glad to Matt doing well. That dude gave his entire body to the sport.
