I love seeing old footage like this. Almost every city has a skate history that should have a documentary to go with it, without these guys skating wouldn't have been that indescribable, un name able thing that we all loved at one point.
Totally. I can remember back in 96 sessions in parking lots. That lead to us just kicking it and having the time of our lives goofing off, music everything. I skated from 86-98.
Absolutely glorious...befitting of such a legendary skate scene. We had nothing like it in north Texas...I vividly remember family trips to the beach where we passed a sign on I-35 that said Cedar Crest...my heart skipped a beat every time we passed it, wondering if somehow the ramp was between Austin and DFW...closing with Shudder to Think's "Red House"...? Fantastic.
We did the same thing here in Austin Tx, Luke and Matt Graves got us all into the scene with some back wood ramps, Lance and Cab came to one our early backwoods ramps, was a great time in the 80s coming up in skateboarding, and fortunately I got to ride it out and eventually turned pro in early 90s.. what a great experience to live in that time..
We ended up making Dillo skatepark in the mid 80s and I think it had one of the best vertical ramps in Tx, of course we Houston skatepark that set the bar..
i love these history videos! This one was great! Gave me so many flashbacks to different sketchy woods ramps i rode in NJ in ths 90's. 2000's seemed like alot more backyard ramps popped up. But nothing like hearing about a ramp in the woods a few towns over, pedaling there, hiking in, and seeing a massive halfpipe just appear in front of you was a trip. Alot of behind neighborhood woods ramps back then, some decent, some sketch, but every one of them is tattooed in my mind. Thank god because i sucked at loading a 35mm lol
Love this. Skateboarding at its core! What I lived for. Skating, friends, pushing each other to no end.miss the 80's and 90's to join end. Kids today have no idea what fun is.
Awesome doco - brings me back to those times even though I never made the trek from New Jersey to CCCC. Great to see Jay Henry - I remember his backyard ramp - probably the first one I ever saw. Too bad the grumpy old neighbors had him take it down before I could skate it. Luckily, the Kane brothers saved the day and built the Barn and pulled us out of the drainage ditches along 78!
Used to skate water bros blue ramp and skate hut in olnyville ri and they always talked about cedar ridge, I ask for direction to get there, they said “ you’ll never find it”. Great to finally see the greatness they were speaking of.
We had one out in the Ontario bush called Mount Skate Helen's. I know a few lifelong carpenters and contractors who got their start building that wonky thing at 13 with "borrowed" lumber.
One ramp the served the scene well during the interim between the A-Town ramp and Cedar Crest was the Rabbit Ranch Ramp in Springfield, VA. There were lots of sessions, and at least one contest. It was up for about two years. It deserves mention, so I'm mentioning!
Great documentary! I remember seeing Wiggy at a show at the 9:30 Club - before that night all those TOKE TEAM dudes were super intimidating for me to be around, loud, gnarley and serious shredders - and he nodded at me, asked me if I was at the session the day before and then gave me props! Made my day dude!! Interesting how Ethiopia Ramp’s not mentioned so far (haven’t finished watching it yet though)…that ramp was where I cut my teeth on vert, I only went to CCCC once and it was for a Government Issue show so I didn’t skate, I was working the merch table!
This was so well done, and although the ramp was just a few years before my time, even I heard about this place living on the other side of VA in the mid 90’s. Now I know the full story🤘
We did something similar in North Bergen NJ. Built a great halfpipe in the "woods" by my house lasted about 5 years in the 80s. Good times. Somehow it got called the Shop Rite ramp among other names.
i have to correct what ian said about ability to fear or ability not to fear. The turning point in bmx for me with progression really took root when i realized you cant be fearful or fearless, YOU LEARN TO CONTROL FEAR! When you do something so often that its an extention of yourself, you know your skill, you wouldnt eye up a obstacle or trick unless you already know its a high percent chance you'll land it so whats actually stopping you? Fear of self shame for being a chicken when you know you can do it is sometimes more painful than the crash of trying it. So dont let fear control your passion, but also keep enough fear in your mind to know your limitations, truely fearless guys spend more time hurt than progressing.
I know some of the dudes who grew up skating there, and they have so many great stories from there. Think I remember them saying something about bad brains playing there. My local group of skaters had a local DIY spot Called The Ridge. That was torn down as well. I can only imagine how they felt having the ramp torn down. some of the guys made a documentary about ridge as well years after it being torn down.
I lived just down the road from here, Chantilly Va,. I was 14, not a very good skater, never got a chance to go, my folks were "scared" of anything that resembled punk.. lol. Years ago, I got a call from my father, who'd just heard an interview with Mick Jones from the Clash, on NPR. He apologized for bugging out when i was a kid.."I get it now! I'm sorry I threw away your Clash cassettes!" lol!😂 the internet kinda took sub-culture out of the equation. If you were a kid with interests in anything other than football, jesus, or Ronald Reagan in northern va in the 80s, you had to dig.. and if you got lucky, someone's older sibling would come back from college with a mix tape of random punk, indie, or "new wave" music... it was a cultural wasteland ... but when you DID find something cool /different.. it was almost ecstatic. Now, everything moves so quickly, nothing has time to "mature", or marinate. And viewers/listeners are on perpetual information overload... and now i'm "that" old dude...😂😂
glad i started skating in the 90s in new york because it was mostly street and there was no animosity with bmx riders, because bmx riders and skaters both skated and rode. same stoke different apparatus
Centerville it's the right turn in the middle of nowhere or a left turn if you're coming from the other direction that must have been at someone's backyard that looks like the 80s I saw RX7 text Tony Hawk Mr Hawk please build or help build a skate ramp in Mount Airy Maryland it's very beautiful and the people are friendly but as usual there's no place for all these kids who want a skateboard to ride I'm an adult and I get told to get out stop what I'm doing Watkins Park is a great place about 45 minutes outside of DC close to a lot of stuff but it's small town feel they also have a brewery I'm not a drinker but it's a nice looking building and it's in a historic part of town there's an art presence so Mr Hawk please help install a skatepark in Mount Airy Maryland Sykesville has one they call it shrimp town Mount Airy need something bigger give it a name after you make it a really for the community flat area inground tide pool all that stuff Fairfax County Wakefield Park just completed a beautiful Park for skateboarders bicycles and it's all concrete Wakefield Park skatepark Virginia

Wow. Amazing doc. So much of the core of skateboard history. Thanks.
Skateboarding has come such a long way and I will always cherish the early days before it blew up into what it is now. Much love and respect!
So glad I got to skate that ramp. Brian Boyd took me there in the 90s. It was a fantastic ramp. Pool coping. Can’t beat it. ❤
Sick! My Dad used to take me there to shred when I was in elementary school. The old dogs were always nice to me as little grom ⚡️

Gen X and Gen Y were the last generation of kids to go outside.

Great doc about one hell of a time in our lives. Never made it to CCCC before it was trashed but its legendary presence will always remain.
I hope theres some Blaze Blouin footy in here. Definitely a noteworthy ramp & scene.
thank you for making this and putting it out

Many trips to the midnight lumber company...
Lost my virginity there. Sept 16th 1987. Broke my arm the next day
Epic! ❤🔥
Jeff Grosso never got to see this place
I only found grosso on "vans Love letter's to grosso" they were great history of skateboarding videos
Bad ass show
An ordinary person spends their life avoiding tense situations. Skaters spend their life getting into TENSE SITUATIONS!!!
stooooopid wooden toys that changed so many lifes ..❤
Nice I went there in’92 with Jim noonan and rode my hard tail mtb. Cat fish video

Gotta wire those "Oillies" before attempting a McTwist.
Funny how Tony Hawk's name is in the title but he's in there for all of 13 seconds.
