- Given the current situation with KSP 2 I figured now was the perfect time to kick off the new KSP 1 version of our KSP2 Aircraft only series! Using only planes as launch vehicles (satellites and non-atmospheric probes stay the same) and I am PUMPED to get started, we have visual mods like Paralax, Scatterer, Volumetric clouds (EVE), Planetshine, TUFX, HUD Replacer with Ztheme (full mod list below) and we finally are going to have the breaking ground robotics to play around with!!

Kerbals are weird creatures. They can attach flaps onto nothing, use plastic (metal?) bottles as landing gear, but refuse to do something with these damn flying trees!

I've gotten a lot of comments about this and just to quickly clarify why I said "is" rather than "was"; I just wanted to go the safe route since the only fully confirmed lay offs at that point were blackrack and the CMs. The rest (although obvious, I mean 70 lay offs, literally everyone yeesh) are still unconfirmed, and everyone *is* still working as far as we know until June 28th (when the actually layoff happens).
Phew, this is reminding me what a trainwreck the entire situation is though lol
@@smooneychad You can't get any less confirmed then government paperwork submitted to have all 70 employees laid off
The only question of if is whether they will wait the full amount of time till the scheduled date or provide everyone unemployment packages for an early layoff (which as you said we have seen for some employees)
Modded ksp1 is so much more fun, exciting, and better than ksp2. We never needed ksp2 in the first place, and I am a fool for buying it.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel the exact same way after playing modded ksp1 again for this. Though I'll still come back to ksp2 to finish up my plans there, this is just so much more fun already
We needed not "KSP2", we needed more optimized KSP1
But T2 wanted full control over franchise

@@smooneychad Just a tip: don't make more KSP2 videos if it feels more like a chore with glitches than actual fun. In the long run, KSP2 will die and be remembered as a scam, and moddedKSP1 content will be far more popular. Speaking of mods, do try FreeIVA and B9 procedural wings. And MK4 spaceplane by Nertea.

You can't play "planes only" without FAR, since it's complex aerodynamics simulation allows you to make a lift-wing bodies and other interesting things

I love this series man, keep up the great work and I cant wait to see the future planes, that Internal view mod is also pretty cool

You said the breaks are too weak, but have you tried turning them up in the action menu? I think they are set to 50 or 75% but you can turn them all the way up to 150 or 200% (I forget). I've never had the brakes give me any trouble, though I still hate those landing gear.

as someone who basically only uses ksp to build fighter jets these days, watching the starter rocket with basic fins actually maneuver made my soul hurt. gotta love early game career/science mode lmao
Nice! I'm more excited for this replay through than I ever was for KSP2!! I might suggest one last mod though: lgg's ScienceAlert ReAlerted fixes ksp1's archaic science system

this is great i have always wanted a series that played with the "newer" ksp mods i am looking forword for the rest of the series!
That was the same reason I wanted to do this, seems like there's a lot of showcase's but I couldn't find anyone doing a playthrough with all the newest/best mods. More on the way!

Add KSP-IE to your instance as well. It’s actually for interstellar exploration unlike the Far Future Technologies mod which is for advanced interplanetary exploration.
Awesome video! I'm sad that we won't get to see the spiky ground textures or randomly falling through planets but hopefully some equally hilarious glitches happen :D It'd be amazing if you could post screenshots of your most list too 🙂

you should add RCS build aid, it shows your dry COM as well.
I love everything about the solid fuel plane. :D The landing gear whose drag keeps it nose-up when it rolls over, the shenanigans with the center of mass and the TWR under 1.0. I once made a much bigger spaceplane with no control surfaces. It had a lot of reaction wheels; especially Mk2 drone cores which have much more torque for pitch than the other axes.
I need that HUD Replacer skin. Looks just right for my eyes.
9:36 Those aren't landing gears, they're bouncing gears! Am I right? I'm becoming a landing gear specialist but I can't figure out how to work with the ones on the stalks.
To be honest though, KSP planes often come down pretty heavy; carrying a lot more fuel than they would IRL. Some of the stock planes only have 2 Mk0 tanks -- 100 units of fuel.
I like to build planes which are stable without SAS -- under keyboard control -- so I can fly them with a scientist who can reset the experiments. It was quite a challenge, but I'm starting to get good now.
I love IVA view because it's the view I'd get if I was really there. 👨🚀I can understand the landing difficulty though. I don't like landing at all, when it comes down to it! I hate it the least when I can see my landing lights illuminating the ground; that gives me perspective. If I flew real planes, I'd probably limit myself to WW1 open cockpits and land with my head over the side looking at the landing gear! 😅
I'd like this series to continue with FAR on, (I haven't seen it on the list) it would make it harder but also more realistic

what version of ksp was this recorded on? i tried copying the modlist and couldnt find half of it
that said love the ksp1 series sofar!
1.12.5 but I've got almost all versions of KSP set as compatible in ckan (settings->compatible game versions) so I can get some of the out-of-date mods that I wanted but still work despite being listed as incompatible. Almost all should be on ckan, except for volumetric clouds and a couple other things that are manual only or paid.

Those aero fx look nice took a look to the mods list couldnt find the mod for it. Are the fx stock, but it looks improved because of tufx, or do you use a mod for it?
My best guess it that they look better because of tufx, it would be awesome if there were a mod for better aero fx though!

A nice mod with can help you is rsc build aid with does help when putting rcs on craft but also shows you the center of mass when the craft is out of fuel which will help you a lot
Ah yeah that would have definitely been very helpful! I feel like I probably forgot so many usefully mods like that, it's always a struggle lol
@@smooneychadanother mod I remembered just now is x science or something like that which shows you all the science you can do in your situation in one menu and do said experiments in the same menu
RCS Build Aid is high on my list of mods to install for this reason. I drain the tanks to see how COM moves. Some of my spaceplanes have more than a dozen pairs of tanks which makes it quite a trial.

I agree, can be a little boring in just a tiny plane. iva should be a blast though when we start having large aircraft or stations to explore! (hopefully lol)
How did you disable the grass in parallax 2? And does it actually increase any noticable performance.
It's a big impact on my PC (I'm on an IGPU though), I'm pretty sure you just turn the terrain shaders/quality to high rather than ultra and that disables it

I think you use real plume because of the particles but I think waterfall is way better because of the mesh system
I have waterfall as far as ik, i used to use real plume though and i can agree that waterfall is way better!

Working on a light version of the mod pack I'm using, with almost none of the visual mods but everything else included so people with lower specs computers can play along too, hopefully that may work, so keep an eye out!

Yep! I put out two versions on my discord ( discord.gg/MQtTkSQYwV ) a "full" version which is everything you see in the vids except for camera and recording stuff and a light version with almost no visuals and non-esientials removed for low spec PCs (they should both be pinned in the smooney-crafts channel)

Part name is elevon (like the roll+pitch control surface found mostly on delta wings) but I was using them as ailerons (just roll) and airbrakes though ones like these are more so like split-flaps

Definitely, hoping to bring out some designs I've made in the past (most of which are vtol) and get some real use out of them in this series
how did you make Outer Planets Mod - Visual Overhaul work with ksp 1.12.5? 😭
I'm just using the version listed in ckan (though it will probably not show up unless you enable older versions as compatible) I also have the OPM True volumetrics and parallax add ons. They all seem to work pretty well, lemme know if you need links or anything! :D
@@smooneychad no, i don't need links but when i installed Outer Planets Mod - Visual Overhaul v0.3.5 and open ksp it says unsupported version please use ksp v1.3. how did you overcome this? my ksp version is 1.12.5.3190

The tail gear doesn't have brakes, but it can steer. The mains have brakes but can't steer.
How do you define "beating" KSP1?
Completing the tech tree, I have some huge expansions to the tech tree here though so that'll be a bit more difficult than usual

I play KSP2 because ive been told KSP1 crashes 24/7 lags alot is unoptimized looks like sh’t and doesnt work on Windows 10. Oh and i dont trust myself with mods lmao. I feel scammed.
KSP1 with all the DLCs and no mods will run on almost anything, very potato friendly, and runs fine on windows 10 as I used to play it on there. If you're running KSP2 then you should be able to run KSP1 with max graphics just fine. Right now the only thing that KSP2 has on base KSP1 is that the loading times are WAY faster, pretty much everything else runs much faster on KSP1. Higher part counts, much better fps, etc. and from my experience the only way that KSP1 will crash more than KSP2 is with lots of mods (even more than what I'm using here) which is exactly why I was so excited for KSP2 having all the "mod" features right out of the box, rip tho :/
@@smooneychad …i play KSP2 with Max graphics because i love the good looks and even with a rocket that has like 4 large engines it still runs perfectly smooth, Only lag i ever had was when i had 258 ENGINES and i was spinning violently on the launch pad while exploding.
@@smooneychad well maybe once KSP2 gets some updates or they allow mods and make it customizable to mod it (like easier for players to and their own new content in mods) itll be worth it for me to have bought it!
