The Modest 340 HP 7M Supra That's Coming For Your JZ. | It's a Cult

- Today we're driving a modest 340 whp Mk3 Supra hiding a beefed up bottom end underneath the faded original 80s paint. At only 9psi, it clearly has room to go, but of course the 7M can turn into an enemy at any point if not properly cared for. Enjoy!

nothing beats the sound of a 7M-GTE
A 2jz gte vvti does
@@stavrosmourtikas8135 what colour is your supra then
@@zephyr.r red
True, but the majority of 7Ms don't make any noise 💀
@@PoorManMods I have a freakin' 7M-GE with stock exhaust (I think). It's like the most beautiful sounding car I've ever owned.
As a 7mgte mk3 Supra owner, I enjoyed this video
im looking out for a mk3 again too! can you tell how the situation is nowadays to find parts? even back then it became already slightly difficult for some
@@Fabian-ok1vn i just sold it in July because getting parts sucked. people asking $300 for a window switch, hell nahhh. i wanted to manual swap mine but an R154 cost more than i paid for the whole car. now i have a 240SX and it's sooo much easier and cheaper.
@@CoffeeEnjoyer69 oh wow ty for the reply! yeah ... the car itself here in germany is worth 5x times more than back then. CRAZY times ... hurts since its the only car i really miss driving.
340HP is a great number for these cars, I would be happy with that number.
The NA 7mge made 200hp, the GTE only made 230 stock! Its super undertuned from the factory hahah. Ive been running my 7m at 20psi on a 3071R for years now, it loves it. Stock valvetrain goes to 7k no worries as well, stock internals too just MLS and arp hardware throughout. I am building a fully forged engine now and doing a custom sequential twin turbo build because why not xD
How’s the setup twin turbo going
@@61936 The turbos are still at glen munro racing getting highflowed. Engine is together finally after over 100 hours spent porting the head and cutting valve seats. Shimless buckets keep getting delayed by months at a time, and costs are blowing out but its getting there hahah. Gotta love projects! PGS gearset on the way for the 154 as well. My plan was to have it running by Febuary this year but so many delays outside of my control might stop that :/ Just gotta keep chipping away at it
lower compression and ran like 6-7 psi stock with an insanely restrictive exhaust. I gained insane power from a full exhaust and boost controller when i had a 7m
I found that the factory turbo is adequate for those numbers. The biggest difference is response. I know big turbo this big turbo that blah blah blah, but for fun factor, the ct26 cannot be beat.
CT26 with billet internals wouldn't be a bad move if response and reliability is your ultimate goal.
@@RoadsUntraveled Exactly. I believe too many people think big power is the way to go, but you lose so much of that fun factor. My first night out after installing my boost controller at 15 psi changed everything. Torque everywhere. Awesome review as always.
@@RoadsUntraveled 100% is the best bang for buck without cheaping out to a Chinese turbo
Especially a refreshed one
I fitted a Driftmotion 57 trim CT26 with boost controller set to 12 psi, the engine has a forged rebuild, a 3 inch elbow into a 3.5 inch down pipe etc, all up it's solid to drive and heaps of fun, pulls all the way to 6500 smooth as.
A70s stand up!
What a beautiful A70. I really like how the owner did everything he could to build her up, but still stayed conservative.
Embarrassingly, I run a 7M-GE auto of all things, but that's also how you get the MK3s cheap and it was in way too good of shape to pass up. It's an absolute blast to drive and it gets a stupid amount of attention.
Nothing wrong with a 7m auto mines got an ats auto built for 800hp it works phenomenal
Mine are all auto and they are still unbelievable fun
@@jordanabrams3204 Yeah she's still a blast in the summer.
Even my 01' GT-S Celica in M-Mode is crazy fun!
2:06 well, to be fair, there were the All-Trac version offered (or GT-FOUR in some regions). But I will agree that this is an enjoyable video! Owner seems knowledgeable and the car has a very relatable 'real world' build quality. The 'MacGyver'-ing of random car manufacturers parts was definitely refreshing to see. Thanks for the great video!
The car that I saw at the Javitz Center back in the day that I never stopped drooling over. Soooo nice.
love the 7m, my brother built one in 2010 ish i would think. 450 at the wheels, fully built engine. Still running without any major issues. But then again its not driven like its stolen all day. Only taken for a drive when its nice out
I owned 2 of these a midnight blue with blue leather interior automatic, and the other one was white with gray interior five-speed and they are awesome cars
Digging the Selfie-VLOG-style during the monologue. Feels more welcoming than a full body shot from a distance on a tripod.
This is a very inspiring video for me to complete my own 7m project.
I miss my 89 turbo manual... yes, the one in my profile picture.
So cool to see someone build a 7M
I think as these cars become more of a classic and get rarer, keeping a breathed on 7m in there, just to keep the original 'feel' or keep it somewhat numbers matching will be desirable, especially as prices for 2J's go up. Still a very stout bottom end that can support 6-700 hp with a decent build. Only problem becomes aftermarket support for the 7M down the line.
It's funny seeing people say they prefer the mk3 over the mk4 nowadays. Both are really great cars but I will always love the boxy look of the '80s and never part with mine.
"Pulled the original 7M because it had a lot of issues" Nooooo, I don't buy it!! 😂 But really, great build! Love the 7M!!
I had never had any issue with my 7M engine in my 1987 mk3 supra, it still purrs like a kitten
I actually like these. Thanks again RUclipsrs for ruining the price…
Very nice build, and nice way of setting up the filmimg.I have a 7MGE manual, not sure what I am gonna do with the engine yet. Have also had a 1GGTE auto. You have to remember that these cane out before the Lexus brand existed, so the MA70 was the top if the line Toyota, outside Japan, and was fully loaded / bloated. A great GT. The MK4 is a more focused car, if you wanted the GT in 1992 then the SC300 and SC400 met that need with underpinnings of the MK3 Supra carried over.
im somewhere north of 500whp on my 7m. Maybe around 580ish whp at 30psi. So far, it's been reliable. im on a small turbo because i love the fast spool and response. The only downside is that it falls off about 6,000rpm. redline is 7,200. maybe next year, I'll go bigger and put these 272 cams to use.
Owned my 89 since 2002, restoring entire car, I posted Duane’s white Supra back in the day on the forums when he was in sport compact car magazine, I remember him calling me on the phone asking me about the article because back then Canada didn’t get the magazine until a week later after the US. A lot of history in mk3 Supra community with these cars, so much hate and forgotten engine once the fast and furious movies came out it was only about the mk4
love my 7m just did metal head gasket so i can turn up the boost soon
Looks like a reliable daily looks fun.
@marcus, The CT26 in the supra is a lot bigger than the ones on the 3S-GTE for the celica and mr-2. Also, the 7M was never meant to have a turbo, it was added in 1987 to compete with Nissan. The 7M-GTE was once the most powerfull engine to come out of Japan. The reason why people cho(o)se the JZ swap route is that a JZ swap was the same amount of money as the 7M overhaul would cost. Just the purchase alone of a 1JZ or 2JZ was sub 2k dollars. Nowadays a JZ swap will set you back upwards of 8000 dollars for the swap.
This is true, as the 2J can be swapped into neigh everything now, and a pulled JDM 2JZ goes for 6-7k alone. Yet in the end you're getting a 20 year old engine that needs or should be rebuilt anyway. You could just dump that into fully built 7M, though the aftermarket support for the 2J will be much better. However if your power goals are sub 1k hp, the 7M build route is definitely getting to be a more attractive alternative if you already have one. 1J isnt terrible at around $4k, but you're losing 0.5 liters of displacement.
Keep in mind the 7M is still a closed-deck iron block and still very stout in this day and age!
And when i thought i blew my 7M in 2014 they were $450 for the whole motor from reputable aftermarket shops. I wanted a JZ so bad and now all i want is another 7M powered MK3
Had a super reliable 7mge making about 175kw it just needs a good head gasket and head bolts
In '92 I was lucky enough to buy '91 MK3 with the really mild face lift.
One of only two cars I still pine for!
If the turbo stays and its twin scroll, a quick spool valve could add a couple hundred more rpm under the ppwerband, especially with COP and drive by wire. Lots of tunability.
BTW, sounded freakin' AMAZING!! I miss mine...
You should come to Toronto this summer. Lots of supras to film ;)
Wild. My name is jeremy and i too have a red Mk3 Supra. 87 twin turbo 2JZ! All Jeremys must be awesome!
Such a beauty
I have a 7M-GE🤠
Just turbo it, get that T in there.
Seen one out and about just today !!!!
I've always thought the mk3 was better looking than the mk4. Just clean, smooth and handles better than any car has a right to...
Mk2 owner here, working on our 6mgte rn hopefully we can document combining the 7mgte and the 5mge. Being broke is gonna take us a while though 😂
Have had my MK3 88 hardtop turbo since January 2000. Blew-up 7 engines and finally put a 2JZ in. Next year will be 16 years I haven't heard a 7mgte note out of my car..
Great car 👏👏
Friendly FYI - your radar detector is designed to be pointed straight and level for best performance :)
7m definitely sounds better than the 2j the deep grunt and rumble is perfect. And idk what the owner is worried about if the engine was properly built and has a mhg and arp's that motor should do 5-600kw (650-800 HP) no problem . Again thats if it's built and tuned right. There's even things like cam trigger kits and shimmed oil pumps that make it more reliable. Hell's I made 700whp for years no issues. And before that 525 on the stock 7m block with only arp headstuds, hks metal head gasket, and a borg warner s360 turbo. 7m's can make the same power as jz's. It's just idiots that dont know how to build/maintain them that get them or people that listen to jz hype that give them a bad rep for a head gasket issue that only effected early 87-88 year model cars at which mhg and studs or correct head torque fixes and oil issues that can be easily fixed with a better oil pump. Simple formula for big power and cheaper than a jz engine..
Building my MA70 for drag racing...
“Celeeka” 😬😫
Watching the video then it hits me that the video was filmed on my go to crusing roads 😂
MHG , Arp studs and oil pump upgrade the 7m is super reliable
I have 3 mkllls . Two n/a and one turbo. I have april may and dec cars. All burgundy all autos alot of parts enuff to have to 2 cars .one to rally one to make o.g....they all have clean B.C papers in my name. They all for sale. But theu where my dream cars and i took pretty good cares of them.
That shifter needs a SOGI mod and marlin crawler kit stat.
I'll never understand spending thousands of dollars in mods and not replacing the hood struts. I replaced the struts on my Supra the day I found out they were failing. Side note: I had tools on top of my engine, on a cold day, when the hood slammed shut all by itself. It put an upward dent in my hood that broke the paint. Hood struts are way cheaper than the body shop repair bill.
Love it
The 7M is A Torque Monster Beast .... My Tuned NA Makes 350hp & Pulls 200k in 3rd ... Would Not Swap iT For Anything ... Under The Sun ...
mod list?
MK3 Supra was the first car I ever bought with my own money. It was a beast for it’s time, but by todays standards it’s a slow car. However, it was good for burnouts, donuts, some drifting, etc as the long wheel base made it very predictable (just not enough steering angle).
What gearbox would he go to? The r154 is good to about 300kw so would have to use something different if he goes higher in power
Wrong r154 if it's been maintained will do alot more than 300kw I personally did 700 whp on my stock r154 for years and I've seen other do more . Now if your racing your r154 daily then maybe build it but perfectly suitable for 6-8,900 hp
you’re confusing the r154 with the w58
w58: up to 400 horses
r154: up to 750 horse
v160: 1000+

@@patbai6331 w58 likely, its got shorter gearing than the r154

Ford powered KB inspired supra!
340 hp that's cute 😆 🤣
I love the mk3 supra but i've heard the 7m isn't really capable of high power compared to the jz. But in sweden these are maybe 1/3 of the price of the mk4.
It's definitely capable of high power. But like with any engine it's about quality of build and budget.
@@yota8325 Ofc, but i ment stock engine
In norway these are 1/4 to 1/5th of a mkiv
Liked before the watch just because its a 7M
Sellika?
SELEEEEEKA
Put a 1UZFE in it..... after watching the rest of the video and learning he was fuel pump limited on 9 psi I back track my statement. 450 HP is going to be fast.
I had one and beat the balls off of it and it loved every minute of it! I painted lines everywhere!! No lie when the guy came to buy it i just drifted 2 turns did a few donuts and when i stopped he said il take it!!!! 😢
7m all the way
That transmission and rear end would explode if you attempted a thousand HP on this engine and drivetrain unless it has all been built up and freshed up.... A lot.
I'll stop at 450hp says no one ever
Too true 😂
Awesome car but that death trap steering wheel has got to go ✌️

I love the sound of my 7mgte 😊

So I was very happy with my 7MGTE 88’ Mk3 Supra until I got a ride in a 2JZGTE swapped 89’ Mk3 Supra pushing 600+whp at a Toronto Supra club meet ruclips.net/video/pvZZ3T566AM/видео.html and since that night, I decided to chase a 2JZGTE swap for my own Mk3 Supra (done in 2018/2019 which made 650+whp). I have never looked back since.
But I still respect the 7MGTE engine; actually a cheaper build if you desire sub-500whp.
I think the conundrum becomes, if you want to keep these cars running for some time to come, the JZ engines definitely have a lot more aftermarket support and will continue to have it. At some point itll get tough to get 7M parts down the line, especially for higher HP builds. Unless the economics start to make cheap 7M blocks become sought after for other builds lol, as its still one of the few closed-deck iron block I6's.
I was halfway through watching this video on my phone , and the damn phone decided to freeze up so the only thing I could do was restart it . Got to love technology 😂
MK III > MK IV
