    There's a lot of facets to being a coach, Cal was not a high-level X's and O's and stats type of guy. Great recruiter and brought us a championship but it is so damn refreshing watching a real coach who actually has an offense and defensive scheme, isn't coaching a team full of 18 year olds and makes great in-game adjustments. I hadn't seen a successful out of bounds play in Cals entire tenure but saw one in Pope's first game. The backdoor cuts, set plays and stuff he runs is beautiful to watch.

    While I love the fact that you are recognizing the importance of preparation and great X’s and O’s, I totally agree that Mark Pope’s coaching style is 100% an improvement over the way Cal coached his talent. I do want to just point out that we had Billy G running this program into the ground and Coach Cal came in and overnight brought this historic program back to immediate prominence and we were the gold standard for his first six or seven years and even a couple of year up to 2020 even we still were putting a good product on the floor. I think his time was over here and I love what Mark Pope has brought to the table. I love that he has proved that he can recruit. I am blown away by how good our offense is running. I am blown away by the zoom action, the reads, the way our bigs are passing, the defense is the best I have seen in a long time. I just don’t want to make light of how big it was to have a coach like Cal come here and breathe life back into the program. He brought us Elite 8’s, Final 4’s and a national Championship banner. He did so at light speed. I got very frustrated with his lack of offensive and defensive coaching ability. I didn’t especially like his demeanor and I thought him to be smug and frankly thought he was condescending a lot of the time in the way he addressed BBN and the media. Sometimes he had good reason to be frustrated with us as well as we are not real patient with down years. I just had to say, let’s not forget what he did for us.

      @helmfamilyranch3067 Месяц назад

      We had to hire Calipari when we did. The problem we made is actually believing he’s trustworthy enough to offer that insane contract. Cal quit. And basketball changed when he quit. In 2012 basketball was played with, really, a shooting guard shoots and everyone else assumes their position. We play a European style now, everyone must be able to shoot

    • @helmfamilyranch3067
      @helmfamilyranch3067 Месяц назад

      Also Cal was ranking the program on purpose to get back at the men behind the scenes. He goes to war with programs he’s done it everywhere. When they stopped giving him what he wanted, he went to war, and he was essentially throwing games. I’ll believe that no matter because he was.

      @@brett444 I don't remember every player's rating, but off the top of my head, Archie Goodwin, and BJ Boston, as well as just about everyone on BJ Boston's year. All were all huge disappointments. Wagner was not that horrible, and under a good coach would've been fine. Under Cal where the strategy is dribble out the clock, drive, get blocked, and give up to shoot a mid-ranged jumper, no he doesn't do well. That team was stacked and even under Cal could beat good teams off sheer talent and force of will.

    This aged well! Great analysis, I totally agree. How about last night against Duke? Ugly end to the first half, but...something happened in that locker room, something crazy. Maybe even coaching, strategy, adjustments! UK came out in the second half as the aggressor. No more getting pushed around and forced out to the hashmark to run the offense. The Cats were the more physical team, stepped up defensively and got huge stops, played defense and rebounded as a TEAM and did a much better job. Kept fighting and never gave up. Calipari loses that game by 15 plus! Easy. How about the decision to move Carr to the 5 on offense? The big fella, Mr. Foulsalot (seriously went over the back every time) could not guard Carr out on the floor. This led to a couple CRUCIAL scores by Carr and 2 being And 1's. That was COACHING! An in game, on the fly adjustment at a crucial juncture. Wow. Also this was why Foulsalot was ultimately taken out of the game, not "cramps". Also, throwing the long ball to get it in bounds at the end of the game, Coach Cal would never! I would worry about UK even getting the ball in bounds in that position under Cal, let alone getting it to someone who could make a free throw. I am so happy to see it, all the Calipari Kool-aid drinkers eating their crow. I said it for years, no one is better at getting elite talent to play together, but outside of that, his basketball IQ is embarrassing for someone who has been coaching for 4 decades. WE HAVE A COACH! And I could not be more happy.

    Look, I respect it, however Calipari in the last 15 yrs is BOLD. Cal hasn't been the same since the 16/17 season. I don't know what changed or if finally the rest of college basketball figured out how to counter his heavy guard system, but UK basketball was reliant on top recruits to show out for way to long. No decent sets were ever ran and stagnant offense was a staple. His playbook hasn't changed and it's a sad day to be a 4-5 in his system. You can compare just about any Pope game to that baylor/arkansas game and see how much basketball has devloped. There is still flaws in pope heavy shooting offense. 1. Amari Williams being a head taller than his defender catching the ball with his back to the basket and EVERYONE knows he's passing the ball back out. 2. Brandon Garrison getting the ball anywhere outside of the paint is going to continue to hurt the team. Him running DHO's is unacceptable and resulting in bad plays consistently. He needs to be a rim threat and set better screens. 3. Jaxson Robinson's light is to green. Love the tenacity but seeing him hoist up contested threes and the ball getting sticky when it finds him isn't a great game plan when this team is very well rounded.

    NIL exposed Calipari as a C-tier coach. Not really. He was always pretty damn basic in terms of x's and o's.

      Basketball has changed since 2012 Calipari has been simply out coached constantly for the last 5-6 years you can’t win with just freshman anymore. This guy said it best you have to recruit to a system not just get the best people available and telling them to go win

      Cal lost his assistant John robic who was extremely important in his teams x and o on offense and defense. When he left Cal was exposed. The man once was a good coach, now he is an average coach, who can recruit. I haven't seen his teams play effectively together since 2019, he had a decent team in 2022 but they also lost some games due to the incompetence of their head coach. Love what Cal done at UK, and he should be applauded for it, however it was a good thing he left. Pope is better right now for UK and his teams atleast play cohesively as a team, and I'm sure he is humble enough to make adjustments if he is wrong about something.

    Pope knows How to make a team! He knows how to improve the group and team fundamentals. Car salesman Cal took the most talent almost annually and got so little from them!! Cal lowest returns from the best talent of any coach I can recall!! Horrible coaching and wrecked so many young players hope of an expected National Championship. Sad,Sad and unfortunately hung around way way too long!!! Fraud Cal reigned far too long at Ky and now takes his carnival Cal ways too Arkansas. Bye Bye😮

Fan is short for FANATIC, and boy UK has a lot of those type of people!! Cal must be laughing his ass off, living Rent-Free all these months later!!

      I think self , pitino and a slew of tge brightest coaches have fell to calamari even my own Roy Williams plus more and you come up with AD. You don't know shit about basketball, because that over dribbling beat those defensive schemes. I hate Kensucky. They suck up to every coach tgat has been there then when they don't perform they throw him away to trash. Pope has two tournament wins and you talking about running sets against low level competition lmaoooo!!!!!!
