My dad played D3 soccer and they often competed in tournaments with lots of D1 & D2 teams plus they trained literally every day. They also received room & food stipends every month (although it was pretty minuscule & he went to a small Catholic school so it could’ve been a product of their funding)
I get what you’re saying overall though; I just wanted to point out some D3 programs are just incredible and act as feeder teams to D1 programs. UW-Oshkosh in WI is a football national juggernaut that produces many D1 players & St. Thomas in Minneapolis produces many D1 players in soccer, football, and basketball. I’ve hooped with D3 guys too and they are on another level than just regular varsity players-they usually were the best player in their school or conference but just not good enough for D1/too lazy for D2. I always put respect on someone’s game when they played D3 sports, but you have to consider the fact I was an average JV player hahaha

Let’s get this straight the main reason why he struggles is literally basketball IQ he has great movement, but doesn’t know how to use that movement to get to good spots to make great place with his skill set. He could be such a great player, but he literally takes the hardest shots possible And doesn’t even give himself an opportunity to build some rhythm trying to get some easy midrange, pull-ups, and floaters or lay ups and build out his range. I think that’s his biggest issue otherwise in terms of his skills he moves well he just needs to shoot better as well. He’s had a lot of shot opportunities off of step backs that he could’ve definitely made still really hard shots to take though.

He needs a coach who can whip him up and force him to relearn the basics. Even then, it might be too late. He wasted too much time. This might be his last stint in basketball considering how competitive rosters can be there. He should relish and cherish it more. Even if he doesn't make it in the nba or g league, i really doubt he'll get offers abroad if he stays like this.

I'm trash at basketball, I can't dribble to save my life, or do anything a "basketball player" should be able to do, with the exception of being able to shoot 3's, and I know for a fact that I have better shot selection than he does. Does his dad have dirt on the coach or did their family donate a bunch of money to that school or something? I have no idea how he's still starting.

I truly believe, as a 17 year old kid from the UK who has never played a second of competitive basketball, that I could beat Julian Newman in a 1v1 scenario. Purely because, for all the ball handling ability he has and all the flashy moves he can muster, I'm 6'5" with a consistent jumpshot. He can stepback as much as he wants but he's not going to create enough seperation and I'll block it every single time. He can try and cross me as much as he wants, I'm not gonna take the bait because I know he's scared to drive. He can try and actually drive but I was a sprinter in high school so either: He's not going to be quicker than me and he'll be forced to reset or he will be quicker than me but he'll probably try and get flashy with it and I'll make the chasedown (even if he doesn't there's still a solid chance I make the chasedown anyway). When it comes to the offence I'm sorted because if he tries the steal and misses he's probably going to fall which gives me a free layup. If he decides to drop off and give me space then I'm going to shoot it and (unlike him) I can actually hit it (or I can use the space to gather speed and blow through him on a drive) and if he decides to get up close and play close, on-ball defence then I'll just drive through him because I'm bigger and stronger and it'll be an easy finish at the rim. My point is that Julian Newman is so abysmal at every aspect of basketball on both ends of the court that even somebody who hoops purely for fun could beat him.

To be fair that first shot he hit actually wasn’t a bad shot, he broke free there a good player would shoot that. A lot of his other shots are shit tho the ball looks too heavy for him
