- In today's video, we're prepping our built 5eat transmission from our Outback XT to go into our Legacy GT project. this requires fixing a few issues we had seen with the built transmission, involving removal of the lower oil pan and removal of the valve body assembly. I figured what better time to give you guys a better look inside these transmissions, and make you a little guide you can follow if you need to remove the valve body out of your car as well.
Al always, we will continue to come out with more videos so be sure to subscribe to keep up on things we cover with our own projects and others in future videos.

i have the 05 5EAT behind a EJ207 with some tasteful mods and it has some weird shifting problems too. thanks for the info
Matt, great information on the 5EAT, your one of the few I've seen stay with the automatic.
Thanks man, figured since we've got it, we should put out info on it 👌
Kudos to you. If an automatic ever has a problem for me it's getting a whole new transmission. I don't care to even attempt it lol
Can be a bit intimidating for sure 😅
Kind of cool to see this, never seen valve bodies worked on, just the clutch packs
They are a hoot, let me tell ya 😏 😂
Great Content Matt! I have an 05 LGT 5eat as well. It’s at a friends house as I need to find out how to fix the trans, and why it’s not going into boost for some reason. so THIS TYPE OF CONTENT IS PERFECT FOR ME! Please keep it up my man!
Oh yup! should have at least a few more coming out on various things 👌
Doing some big things Matt👍🏼
Thanks Omi 🙏
This if giving me hope in building my stepson 5eat instead of pouring all the money required to 6 speed swap it.
Yeah, Building them isn't too bad. Just an upgraded valvebody can do a lot in most cases. And really changes how the car drives.
Hell yeah Matias great video . Hope to get back together soon and it works for your needs .
Thanks man 🙏 Should go back together once i get the parts in. 👌
Great to see progress happening on the build. Also, lvl10 did you dirty with all that rtv silicone, wow haha
Thanks man, wasn't level 10 actually. They send them with a cork gasket. It was swapped out for rtv at my old work during install. They obviously either were messing with me, or never wanted it to leak again 🤣
@MatlasDI ahh ok cool, glad it wasnt them, well it worked lol. That's enough rtv for 2 pans haha.
@Edwin yeah, It was basically a permanent seal 🤣🤣 now I get to clean up all the marring I did to the matting flange, and pick up a new pan 😆
I have a feeling im going to be doing this soon to my 2007 xt.. Since im building the engine to be 600hp. Thanx brother. Your videos a big motivation for my build
Good stuff, man! thank you 😊 🙏
During your joint live stream with Tanner you mentioned looking for another ride. Would you consider being bold and getting a RHD Nissan Stagea? I'm who wouldn't want a wagon with an RB25DET
I do love the Stagea and definitely would consider, but I think the next vehicle chosen will likely be a business decision over anything. Has to fit a certain criteria.
I think you should wait for Tanner to sleep then swap him drivetrains 😁
I would, but I like having reverse 🤣🤣🙊🙊
Installed my first (stretch) belt last year - very weird setup (tool), but it worked like a charm. #thatsabingo
Yeah, they are a little goofy, but get the job done 😆
Thinking about replacing the solenoids on my 2013 Legacy 3.6R. You make it look relatively easy. How can I figure out what type of valves I need to purchase (you mentioned a design change for yours, but it’s also a different year than mine.) Please and thank you!!
You would look up your specific valvebody and check if your solenoids are mounted on top, like in this video or on the side, which is updated. I believe it was '07 or '08 that the valve body design change was made. You have one of the last versions of the 5eat, as all automatic models fully switched to CVT in 2015, so I'd say it's a pretty safe bet you have the updated style.
@@MatlasDI Thank you so much for the quick reply! Currently having a hard time finding just the solenoids. It seems most parts websites just want to sell the whole valve body for $1,000+.
@RobCrp yeah they're not available from the manufacturer, so the only real choice is to get a refurbished set from distributors on ebay. It's a little hit or miss so if you're searching you just want to make sure they state and give proof of cleaning and testing them, and I would make sure there is some time of return policy as well to cover you just in case any have issues. 👌
Hi Guy, I have a 2014 outback that at 250,000 trans starting shaking at hy speed. I bought a used trans had it installed, with 110,000. When you start out in the morning around 35-40 mph it acts like it is shuddering. After the car warms up its not as bad. Do I look at the torque converter or the valve body. Thanks for your vids, enjoy them.
Hey Paul, that can be a little tough, being that the issue is intermittent. Those year ranges had a faulty torque converter that they did a part supercession for, iirc. But since I'm assuming it's a cvt, I don't really have good advice for self diagnosis of an issue like that, and it may be a lesser headache to have it diagnosed at a dealer. I'd double-check that it is transmission/drivetrain related and not a dirty/ faulty maf or o2 sensor.
Are you running the orifice on the transmission under the valve body. The damper for 1-2 shift. Looks like it is. Please verify!
Yes, everything is in its original configuration unless required to be changed with the modifications. Only the internals of the valve body were modified and the initial port and orifices on my transmission are (to my knowledge) still intact and how they came.
Hi there great info would I be able to change a solenoid with the transmission still in the car or would I have to take it out
You can change it with the transmission in the car, you just have to drop the pan and take out the valve body. 👌
I have 2011 outback 5eat, after hard driving or hours of cruising, it stays on 2000+ rpm and got stuck up to 3rd gear only & Does not shift.
Do this replacing the valve body solve this? Thanks 🙏
There could be a few things going on. Sounds like you have an issue with fluid overheating or something of the sort. Locking out of gears and other features can happen due to the temp sensor being too high or pressure issues, so I would probably start by draining fluid and checking for any issues there, do a couple flushes to really clean everything out, and recheck. No A/T oil temp light or transmission MIL present during this?
Hi mate, I own a Subaru outback H6, 5eat Trans, I had been away for a couple of weeks and my wife was using my car, I noticed when I got home and found out that my wife had a flat tire, she had the spare tire put on, the spare tire was a different profile ( 225/45/17 ) my other tires are 225/55/17, now my transmission is making a loud, grinding noise ( like a tin can with rock's in it ) would you have any idea of what is causing this ?? I'm not sure if it's the centre diff or trans doing it ?? Do you know what areas to look at ?? This noise is driving me nuts, or do you reckon the trans is fucked ??
Cheers mate, love your videos and I've subscribed to your channel. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Hey man, sorry missed this comment. Typically the differentials get pretty angry with different tire profiles, which is why subaru advises no difference greater than 2/32" iirc. Prolonged driving on different profiles can overheat the differentials. Aside from noise you'd typically be feeling some torque bind or other issues, but the easiest way to locate this would likely be to bring it in somewhere where they can safely lift the car up and get it moving in air to test and centralize the problem. I would be thinking center diff, but can't be for sure without getting it in the air and running some tests. 👌
Hi thank you for the video! Can you replace the valve body without dropping the transmission?
Yes. Can be done in car. 👌
Thank you! 🙏
Ooohhhh baby
🤙🤙
@@MatlasDI have you seen the forged input shaft and barrels that are for sale for the 5eat I saw some clutch packs from OS geiken I mean pricey of course but buy once cry once you know. I will see if I can find them again I will come back on here and post the link
@@MatlasDI RUclips keeps deleting my comment with the link sorry man
@@MatlasDI sorry you have to remove some tab spaces but that’s the link
@Robert Beene I think it removed it again, let me check the up for review comments and see if it's in there. I'll have to check it out.
Can you link where you're getting solenoids? I need to replace some on a valve body i ordered that came with one broken.
I ordered a set off eBay but didn't like how they appeared when they arrived, so I wound up making a video on cleaning them out and testing operation. I just typed in 5eat solenoids on eBay, and it was an 8 piece set that are supposedly refurbished. Should be fine as a replacement if one of yours is physically damaged. 👌
@@MatlasDI Thanks, and yeah ones literally snapped in half. Just watched your other video. Saved my life with that one. Thanks man!
@Chase Gibbs-Emilo no problem man, yeah definitely check ebay, can get a whole set for around 100 bucks that will get you right 🤙
Matting surface....😂
I see what you did there 😉😂
😁👍🏻👍🏻
🤙🤙 thanks Tom 👌
