how does one feel so comfortable being so open and shouting these words out,its so raw i don't know how to handle it,being so quiet.what makes people fearless with their voices
That's the beauty of humans: We are all so different in our personalities. I, too, am a quiet person. Her boldness is one of the reasons I like her so much. In my self-consciousness, I am drawn to her freedom and her apparent lack of self-consciousness.
This is amazing, vocals, brass, percussion... lyrically. tUnE-yArds has made such an impact on my life. I wish I could personally thank everyone involved.
I know I am incredibly late. But thank you for this tune-yards. It's been a long and arduous journey. I have often felt misunderstood and misrepresented but somehow the message in the song helps a lot. So I am hoping now the healing can begin.
I just heard tuneyard yesterday and this song has sunk into my soul already. I can't believe the spirit of this music, it's amazing. I have seen an american innovate in world music! she reminds me of zap mama without being at all actually like them, but the vocals... holy still. I also love that Merrill Garbus seems so unlike any assumption you'd make about her from her music in shallow ways... but not in more insightful ways. thanks youtube, internet and also especially Merrill Garbus
i saw them live opening for arcade fire and this song i sos amazing live her voice is so powerful also while watching this i had shivers the whole time
Loved this Video. Seeing how our children are suffocated by formal Education and how the Arts are treated as the Poorer Cousin of Academia. But...such a fabulous sound and video! Always good to see children included in something supporting their cause as dependants, where they have very little say on the main subject.
I always see so much ignorance in the tUnE-yArDs comment sections, it's really sad, so many cool influences from different times and places, just an over all interesting listen.
the rhythm of this is just amazing...a frantic pelting of elements that tosses you into a musical rollercoaster...and then the song ends... hmm..... *click* (replay)
This one is quickly growing on me. I rolled my eyes and laughed the first time I heard it. Now it might end up being one of my favorite songs. That's why I love music and art.
There's something I find fascinating about the fraction of a second at 0:16 when you see the blackboard, which is crammed with a jumble of numbers, shapes, figures, and that one emphatically repeated lyric. You know the dichotomy of logical right brain hemisphere and emotional / creative left brain? It's bullshit, a widespread misconception originating from a misunderstood explanation of lateralization of brain function. I've always found science and linguistics and geometry creatively stimulating. I always visualize music as notes along a dimensional axes of time and pitch, in sequence (melody) and simultaneously (harmony). More dimensions represent timbre, tone, volume, vibrato, et cetera...
+James Frank translation in non-nerd language: "It's fascinating that the blackboard at 0:16 represents to me the popular but false notion that the left and right brain are specialized respectively for creative and logical functions. To me, they are enmeshed, so I find them collectively stimulating"
+Jesse Charles Um, it's not a "to me" statement or "notion" that the right/left brain hemispheres do not do creative/logical things. It has been scientifically proven that there is no correlation or causation between creativity & right brain activity and logical thought & left brain activity. This is a theory that has been proven to be wrong. So, you did not actually "translate" the original statement into "non-nerd" language... You just continue to perpetuate a superseded theory that is neither applicable nor accurate to the way(s) our brains really function.
+Adam Lalik not sure if this video is marxist propaganda? i just did 4 years at art school and that's what that was. pretty sure that's just choreographed dancing, but who even knows at this point?
+Samuel Weinstein not that thrilled about capitalism either tbh fam. though i have noticed that pretty much everything i don't like is jewish. i'm sure it's just cohencidence.
Most unique band like, ever in my opinion. No one has ever sounded the way they have or come close to it. (correct me if im wrong) And thanks to Cool TV, I can continue to discover great artists that are out there making quality music.
I just love this video. It's so refreshing. All the people in this video are female and none of them are semi-naked!! They just seem so normal and subversive at the same time! It's great.
You may find yourself in a boring class. You may find yourself wearing odd makeup and suddenly discovering the urge to dance. And you may ask yourself... Well, how did I find this video? 🕺🏼
The dance ensemble are doing theatrical exercises, facial warm-up movements, slow movements, etc. I remember this from taking theatrical/dance courses. Brings back memories.
This song will forever remind me of my trip to Colorado during junior/senior year. I remember it was playing one of the RA's iPod and I was just like "What is this song?" so I sneaked over and looked at the iPod to see what song it was. I couldn't wait to come home and download it :D
Newest fan, here. They opened for David Byrne last night. So captivated by this music and talent that I was afraid David Byrne set might be a disappointment....it wasn’t. It’s David Byrne, what was I thinking?
Shrooms and this album are so awesome. That may sound immature and stupid like I'm some druggy, but the whole album just flows. Beautiful music!!!! Bought all the albums, thank you and keep up the awesome work.
Frida Reyes I'm Canadian and my friend just spent a year touring South America and teaching english as a second language to pay for the trip and it was the most enriching thing she's ever done. Now she sometimes catches herself thinking in Spanish, which is so cool to me. Anyways ~ I wish more of my friends spoke Spanish because it would force me to learn it
+Lou McLaren knowing a second language it's one of the most useful and cool things that exist in my opinion!! aaaand yep, it'd be nice for you to practice and learn with a hispano hablante every once in a while, hmu! I can be your Spanish speaking friend
Frida Reyes I'm from Quebec so I grew up speaking French, I thought Spanish would come more easily to me because of that, but languages just aren't my strong suit. The language I most want to learn in sign language, although not nearly as useful asSpanish in everyday life, ofc. They say there are different "accents" and it's wicked cool to watch
4AD have always produced amazing music i only found out about them because of my love of the Cocteau Twins without 4AD generations of contemporary talent would be lost so i think they should be congratulated on not selling out...
wow.......... it would be so super fantastic if everyone in the world were color blind............ i come to listen to this badassness and see countless racist comments or comments about culture........ lame
This second album is so good ! If you like Tune Yards, Indie music and underground artist, I suggest you to discover a new artist by writing *"Niko Laetailleurs"* in the you tube search bar. Not very famous, but really awesome !
Love the lyrics. Love how different this is. Love how outgoing she is as a performer. Love the video and its meaning. I love all the creativity she has and everything about her. I especially love that she has such a powerful, strong voice.... but i dont like the song, and im not sure why. Its kinda obnoxious maybe? I dunno. :/
Merrill makes enormous use of irony and sarcasm in her work which seems to miss the mark with some people - Americans particularly. I have even seen reviews which say "how can she say that?" From my point of view (Brit, Male, Late middle aged ex-hippy type) I think Garbus's lyrics are generally the cleverest, most incisive and challenging I have heard for many years - sometimes with three levels of meaning all wrapped up in complex rhythms and strange melody. Glorious political stuff. Awesome in my book.
+Andy Castor the composition strongly references african rhythms, and in apartheid africa a whole genre was created by fela kuti. merrill went to africa and was strongly influenced by afrobeat.
No, NOOOOOO make it stop. Whoever, whatever, is signing this, should never sing again. Its fucking painful. Their voice sounds like one of those really bad singers you laugh at on american idol auditions
The only problem here is that you are comparing this wonderful music with american idol, such a shame people are still stuck to "perfect" musical standards.
Oh, what a relief, in that case I suppose you don't feel it like I do, it's ok, everyone can have opinions and everyone don't have to like it. Have a nice day.
I loved this video -- until I realized it features the children of probably one of the most expensive charter schools in the USA. $27,900 for one year tuition?!!! This IS "MY Country" --- even artists I admire seem to fail to see the irony, if not the hypocrisy in this, in light of what I imagined this video was about for so long.... rich kids deserve good stuff too, but this was so disappointing to learn. Brightworks... when I saw it, I assumed was a service for students who have limited and inequitable access to resources... who get locked up, locked down, thrown into SPED... what does this say to you now, knowing this kiddos are far from the poorest, and most likely the richest... "performing" the politic will get us nowhere t-ys.
Cocteau Twins, Clan of Xymox, This Mortal Coil, Wolfgang Press, Dead Can Dance? Bad taste?? You probably don't know any of these incredible bands and if you do, then you know I have anything but bad taste.
I have heard of all those bands but you are only as open to other types of music as the box you put yourself in. Nonetheless, you don't have to learn to like everything (which by the way is the sign of a true music-lover), but some people will like music you don't and true-music people respect that. Once you start acting like you know everything, you don't know anything. Look up this band's musical influences, you might be surprised by what you could discover.
although it may be african-inspired, i think they used it to produce a certain unique sound, the video and the artist's product is focused on an expression of art, not about expressing political equality.
turbotrauma No one called you a weirdo... but judging by your comment you do sound dumb lol. And u cdve looked through all the comments and I'm the only one who mentioned it, but apparently plenty of ppl agree with me, did you recognize that?
The song that got me so obsessed with them! The song’s meaning is so insane though. I don’t see so many people talking about the song meaning (and I don’t know where people find them), but this one is apparently about being rejected because of being passionately intimate. I think the video is about showing basic human expression without shame.
how does one feel so comfortable being so open and shouting these words out,its so raw i don't know how to handle it,being so quiet.what makes people fearless with their voices
we are all susceptible to different instincts in one way or another
That's the beauty of humans: We are all so different in our personalities. I, too, am a quiet person. Her boldness is one of the reasons I like her so much. In my self-consciousness, I am drawn to her freedom and her apparent lack of self-consciousness.
It's usually the quiet ones who scream like this when they actually have something to say
The Monster MW
self expression!!!
I shout out things a lot, but usually in my kitchen with only my cats and dog to hear...
Her voice is raw serotonin
Facts
I love not being able to compare a band with any other. This group has their own sound going on and its awesome
I can't decide which I love more. Her music or her visual art, both are so beautiful.
Absurd, powerful, brilliant. I love this.
gay
I don't understand why it took me soooo long to find out about this awesome song/singer/band/artist/performer. This video feels like a spirit booster.
true
Same bro, except i'm 9 years late 😆
This is amazing, vocals, brass, percussion... lyrically. tUnE-yArds has made such an impact on my life. I wish I could personally thank everyone involved.
Today is a good day.
Today I discovered the tune yards for myself.
Goddamn is this amazing or what you guys?
The tune yards are my spirit animal
They’re also goddamn UNREAL live
Wow, so proud of you
the computer did it
what a great Malian African style vocal....the movie Babyteeth brought me here. amazing movie
This is absolutely beautiful. pure energy and sincerity. Love your work.
Es de las mejores canciones que he escuchado.
I know I am incredibly late. But thank you for this tune-yards. It's been a long and arduous journey. I have often felt misunderstood and misrepresented but somehow the message in the song helps a lot. So I am hoping now the healing can begin.
I LOVE that this has over 3 million views. Makes my heart happy that people still appreciate real music :)
I love listening to this song while I’m high. It awakens something raw in me. I dance so freely to it.
I just heard tuneyard yesterday and this song has sunk into my soul already. I can't believe the spirit of this music, it's amazing. I have seen an american innovate in world music! she reminds me of zap mama without being at all actually like them, but the vocals... holy still. thanks youtube, internet and also especially Merrill Garbus
So gooooood! I want to never stop experiencing this work of art for even a moment.
i saw them live opening for arcade fire and this song i sos amazing live her voice is so powerful also while watching this i had shivers the whole time
This song has that african jazz groove then smooth transitions to reggae to it so heavy!!
This is one of the more interesting music videos I have ever seen.
Been a long time since I listened to this track. Still as powerful if not more now.
Convinced that Adele borrowed that 4:04 "YEAH" for the chorus of Hello.
Same key. Same length. Same everything.
+wooders8 exacly my thoughts!
+wooders8 As soon as I heard Hello for the first time, it reminded me of this right away!
I like it how you said "borrowed"
yes. I cant believe you said that
d .wood ikr

+Jenny Bulcraig This comment is as pretentious as this shitty band and video! Good job; that's quite an accomplishment.
+TheBeans This comment is a pretentious as the shitty username you have! Good job; that's quite an accomplishment.
Jenny Bulcraig ppiouvide
one of my favorite videos, so creative and I love the involvement of kids. such a heavy tune as well. great work all around!
I always see so much ignorance in the tUnE-yArDs comment sections, it's really sad, so many cool influences from different times and places, just an over all interesting listen.
I've never heard this before and I think it's hella interesting, I like it!
Let's just say it like it is: She's great, amazing, creative and it's an absolute joy to watch her perform.
West African Inspired. I think of countries such as Mali and Senegal. Great work!
Very underrated in my opinion!
Absolutely underrated.
I love this song
I agree, in every possible and inconceivable way...
This song always calms my soul. Love the energy it gives off. 💓
The craziest weirdest most beautiful sounds. Merrill you are bad ass!
this is the shit when stoned..."highly" recommended
This was my ringtone for a while. This is a good song for a ringtone.
Imagine it going off in a movie theater....
*quiet, dramatic scene playing up on the screen*
..........
WHAT'S THE BIZNESS, YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
the rhythm of this is just amazing...a frantic pelting of elements that tosses you into a musical rollercoaster...and then the song ends...
hmm.....
*click* (replay)
I LOVE this song. I remember finding this song June 1st 2014
This one is quickly growing on me. I rolled my eyes and laughed the first time I heard it. Now it might end up being one of my favorite songs. That's why I love music and art.
great musician, stay strong & keep it up

+James Frank maybe you have a form of synesthesia
+James Frank translation in non-nerd language: "It's fascinating that the blackboard at 0:16 represents to me the popular but false notion that the left and right brain are specialized respectively for creative and logical functions. +Jesse Charles Cheers. All of you are gems

I feel like I just took a semester of art school
😂😂
without the crushing debt and exhaustion!
+Adam Lalik not sure if this video is marxist propaganda? i just did 4 years at art school and that's what that was.
pretty sure that's just choreographed dancing, but who even knows at this point?
Everything I don't like is communism, dontcha know?
+Samuel Weinstein not that thrilled about capitalism either tbh fam.
though i have noticed that pretty much everything i don't like is jewish. i'm sure it's just cohencidence.
How have I not seen this before?! SO good!
They were AMAZING at ACL 2014!!!!!!
I really wanna see them again
What a great song!
Has anyone else ever noticed she basically has the same singing voice as the dude from Passion Pit?
Not until this moment, but you're absolutely right. Now I must listen to Passion Pit..
Both such 2012 viiibes
Most unique band like, ever in my opinion. No one has ever sounded the way they have or come close to it. (correct me if im wrong) And thanks to Cool TV, I can continue to discover great artists that are out there making quality music.
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE. Check out their track "We Tigers" from the album Sung Tongs. Or just listen to Sung Tongs entirely :D
Chupick Nicolas ha, good call.
I could also suggest the album "Le Fil" from Camille.
Dirty Projectors?
***** Apparently not, but tUnE-yArDs seems to have been performing with them quite a lot.
Love it, true artistic expression that embodies all the senses, nice work!!
Seeing them live is literally the BEST experience I've ever had, Absolutely amazing.
Just Always a Pleasure to Hear and See.. ;0))
I just love this video. It's so refreshing. All the people in this video are female and none of them are semi-naked!! They just seem so normal and subversive at the same time! It's great.
because that dude at 2:33 wasn't obvious enough or were the many men in it before that xD
Why does this give me a Talking Heads Vibe????
mel h Becuase, both bands are influenced by AfroBeat Music...Fela Kuti for example
You may find yourself in a boring class.
You may find yourself wearing odd makeup and suddenly discovering the urge to dance.
And you may ask yourself...
Well, how did I find this video?
🕺🏼
K August Letting the days go by, there's no water in the water fountain...
hahah I came here after listening to talking heads for like half an hour. I guess it gave me a similar vibe.
@@AnEclecticMan fela kuti i go shout plenty so good

This would be an awesome jazz fusion song if someone were to cover this.
Saw this when I was 16 and was like wtf. Now I am 22 and am still like wtf but I love it.
now i'm 15 and have the same impression
Still one of the most unique voices I've heard
i haven't had this much fun watching a music video in... ever!
great job guys, love the expression!
Woow!!
Essa música é incrível!!
Muito boa mesmo!!!
=^))
Shrooms and this album are so awesome. That may sound immature and stupid like I'm some druggy, but the whole album just flows. Beautiful music!!!! Bought all the albums, thank you and keep up the awesome work.
Don’t worry Dustin, shrooms are definitely not drugs
Esta canción me da una vibra nostálgica y no puedo decidir si me gusta o no.
I understood that!!!!! #proud
+Lou McLaren great, then!!!!!

Love the simplicity... creativity is what counts not how much money was spent on the video.
I love this song and the choreography is amazing... I totally love this!
The video reminds me of the cosby show intro.
😂😂😂 mos def. I can see it.
My ears enjoyed. My eyes on the other hand.... well.
"Don't Take My Library, Don't Take My Library!"
I remember when this video had less than 100k views. Glad to see they are makin' it! Can't wait to see them at Lolla~ and Summerfest!
Great song, full of energy and spectacular color combos.. My new favorite band!
If you don't like the song, get off this fucking page. This shit JAMS.
Who's here after watching ''Babyteeth'' ?

Garbage song almost sickening

i realy want to be in these music videos
4AD have always produced amazing music i only found out about them because of my love of the Cocteau Twins without 4AD generations of contemporary talent would be lost so i think they should be congratulated on not selling out...
This will forever be some of the best art I have witnessed.
"Babyteeth" brought me here
wow.......... it would be so super fantastic if everyone in the world were color blind............ i come to listen to this badassness and see countless racist comments or comments about culture........ lame
I wish Public School had been this creative...
Probably one of the best songs I've ever heard.
Baby, then we need for you to listen to more songs.
i love how all the different elements in this song come together
This second album is so good ! If you like Tune Yards, Indie music and underground artist, I suggest you to discover a new artist by writing *"Niko Laetailleurs"* in the you tube search bar. Not very famous, but really awesome !
sounds kinda like TV on the Radio
DONT TAKE MY LIBRARY
Meitar Bar don’t take my knife away
Amazing, beautiful, artful, and straight up bad ass. Thankyou Tune-yards! :)
Thank you, Julia for showing me this.
I still remember you and I miss you quite a bit.

Same. I think it might be the timbre of the lead vocal; it's just unpleasant for that long note in the chorus. My ears are ringing for no good reason.

Nah. I was "thrown into SPED", but still here. I live well. Tune-Yards is the fucking "repugnant" antecedent. Amen, and fuck yeah, etc!
Love their music - this video looks like it was a lot of fun to be in.
Excited to discover this song (thanks BBC 6 Music), because I'm betting from just this 1 song that they've got a great back catalogue.
Remember when 4AD actually had good music instead of crap like this?
Remember when you had good taste in music? Yeah, I don't remember either.
Cocteau Twins, Clan of Xymox, This Mortal Coil, Wolfgang Press, Dead Can Dance? Bad taste?? You probably don't know any of these incredible bands and if you do, then you know I have anything but bad taste.

This is the whitest thing I've ever seen.
Nah.
How tho?
😙
😂😂😂
a heavily african-inspired sound with a bare minimum of (maybe 2) black people in the entire music video... (disappointed shrug)
although it may be african-inspired, i think they used it to produce a certain unique sound, the video and the artist's product is focused on an expression of art, not about expressing political equality.
The product doesnt have to be focused on expressing equality, but my point was expressing a blatant inequality. So thats what I did. Thanks
You really think ignoring the issue is an effective approach to achieving equality? You're an apologist that's what's sad turbotrauma
If it was as simple as humans being humans there would have been more diversity in the video duh
turbotrauma No one called you a weirdo... but judging by your comment you do sound dumb lol. And u cdve looked through all the comments and I'm the only one who mentioned it, but apparently plenty of ppl agree with me, did you recognize that?
this is one of the best songs i've heard in long time, i just listended to it 4 times in a row
Always loved this song, never seen the video. Fits like a glove.
Saw them live at the Hollywood bowl. Honestly they are amazing!!
The song that got me so obsessed with them! The song’s meaning is so insane though. 😍😍😍😍😍 ESTA CANCIÓN ES MI DE TUNE YARDS BISSNESS
transparent has such an amazing soundtrack!!!
First heard this song today, came on twice on Pandora in about four hours. Love it, too bad it took until now to discover!
