I found this song on Transparent. as soon as I heard it I had to look up what it was. my god the pipes on her. I'm in love with what this song embodies...everything about it. just isn't talent like this anymore ...gotta look deep and find it...I'm glad I found you guys. bravo
Her usual bassist is a Nate Brenner. I don't know if he is the bassist here but it might be him. I love the shit out of this song and tune-yards, she sounds exactly the same live as she does on her album..now that is a true musician! Oh I also think the drummer with the white t-shirt is awesome, he gets so into the song it's great.
Keep illuminating this world with rhythm and light! Beautiful! I am sharing this to anyone who will listen, and I already bought 2 of your CD's and am lovin it up!
I found the song through babyteeth and the whole week I've been listening to it I thought that the singer is a man... ma'am you killed me with those vocals...
@planetahead : the "band" formed around her (and she seems to play with different musicians afai can tell)... she was doing one girl band stuff as a street musician with a loop machine... is my understanding. She booked her OWN tour, and got discovered by the independent labels.
Merrill is such an inspiration to me as a female composer. It's heartening to see a woman this completely intelligent, innovative, and just plain talented. To top it off, she achieved success without relying on being attractive. I want to be her when I grow up.
@DJesthp, lol same here. Lil Wayne's rapping style wouldn't work for a bookstore. But there are many other rap artist's music that would work in a bookstore. But then I wouldn't want to listen to the tuneyards while reading my book. Imagine reading and you keep here ahh ahh ahh don't take me life away, dada da dum dum. I would lose it. But this song is so creative! Love it!
If there would be someone to compare this rich in sound song with it would be a Mix between Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye,Bjork and Aretha Franklin????...... most spiritually empowering song I have heard in while!
@hamlanzon6 I heard this song on 89.3 the Current - Minnesota Public Radio! It got stuck in my head and that's how I ended up here. So, GOOD radio will play this ;)
As a musician if you think about actually doing what they just did live in a book store....that takes an incredible amount of skill. They sound amazing.
I want to live in a world where tUnE-yArDs makes millions of dollars selling out coliseums and going platinum while L'il Wayne is playing at book stores, hoping to sell at least one CD.
I love the song when i first heard this and saw the music video, but I have so much more respect and love for it after seeing this. Can not wait to see them tUnE yArDs live
@Lcrash200x I don'T know a lot about them so I kinda wondered if the BAss was only recorded. Asside it was a bit over tuned it sounded great ^^ The Bass that is
What a blessing to have that voice and to use it to shout indescribable music in a library 💚
cute about the window display. . . the band blows minds and rocks socks simultaneously !!! pure gold.
Just finding this very early performance of a great song - it’s 2023.
i just found this group about fifteen minutes ago. you know that awesome feeling when you find great new music? wow, thanks.
I love getting turned on to new music! This is awsome!!! Thanx for posting it

Wow. I just caught the video for this on The Wedge on Much Music and had to see more. This is insanely brilliant!

One of my favorites!
I've been scouring RUclips and Spotify for this band ever since first hearing them on saturday. I can't stop listening to them, superb stuff!
she's so sweet...and then that music starts. tUnE-yArDs is phenomenal...
Very impressive with all the on-site made samples.
Agreed! They make extraordinarily great music and are so under appreciated. Love this band.
I found the song through babyteeth and the whole week I've been listening to it I thought that the singer is a man... ma'am you killed me with those vocals...
god I love her art so much.... she's invented something great... I think this is the start of a new universe.
@planetahead : the "band" formed around her (and she seems to play with different musicians afai can tell)... she was doing one girl band stuff as a street musician with a loop machine... is my understanding.
She booked her OWN tour, and got discovered by the independent labels.
ever since i found water fountain my imagination for creativity has grown.
Lo puedo ver seis veces a día y cada vez me parece más espectacular. Que banda!
Fascinating! The female aggressively sings in a buffalo type stance whilst her male counterparts ....party in the background. Is this tubthumping?
lol

She kicks ass. Best album of 2011 so far
I love your performance, kisses from Brazil 💚
the outpouring at the front of the song is just great. anything seems possible after that . . .
Merrill is such an inspiration to me as a female composer. It's heartening to see a woman this completely intelligent, innovative, and just plain talented. To top it off, she achieved success without relying on being attractive. I want to be her when I grow up.
what a back handed compliment
both for calling her ugly and saying other women got their musical success from their looks
Thanks, Zatch. They should play a gig with my boys in Tally Hall.
extra extraordinary
I dig her music so freaking much! Ugh! it makes me wish i was that talented. she's amazing
My goodness this is wonderful. MUSICALITY OVERLOAD :D
Siete dei grandi, vi adoro
that intro...so much soul.
Ok, first off, I'm a fan, but I have to say I get a HUGE Charlie Brown vibe from this video.
@marzrei : she uses a loop machine, but she only records it during the performance (which explains the way her songs start (espc live)).
This song is off the meter!!!
@DJesthp, lol same here. Lil Wayne's rapping style wouldn't work for a bookstore. But there are many other rap artist's music that would work in a bookstore. trippy.... I love it.
if only music was more real like this
If there would be someone to compare this rich in sound song with it would be a Mix between Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye,Bjork and Aretha Franklin????...... most spiritually empowering song I have heard in while!
I friggen LOVE the drummer with the white T
get up, get up, get up... a tribute to her days hosting the Caribbean music show in college? this shit's hard though-it's the biznass
brilliant
I so pictured this singer as a young black man. My apologies. That's a damn powerful voice and I am sooo jealous of it.
She recreates her sound live in such awesome ways, i think merril/tuneyards is great
you are killing it so great. where can I find you?
@hamlanzon6 I heard this song on 89.3 the Current - Minnesota Public Radio! It got stuck in my head and that's how I ended up here. So, GOOD radio will play this ;)

Why isn't there a "Love" button? This is amazing!
Wow didn't realize that's how the sound was made....NICE
Love it!!

As a musician if you think about actually doing what they just did live in a book store....that takes an incredible amount of skill. They sound amazing.
One hundred percent disagree with every word of this statement.
AWSOME!
This is ouuuutstanding.
i wasnt ready
I like that the only difference between this and the studio recording seems to be that the vocals are quieter than the instruments
fucking awesome.
They are gonna blow up! MARK MY WORDS!
did the tuneyards ever blow up? im gonna say not really. the world's not ready.
they are so badass
She is so coolllllll! And pretty...
i love how the loop action leeds you into the song. awesome talent.
Amazing..
I want to live in a world where tUnE-yArDs makes millions of dollars selling out coliseums and going platinum while L'il Wayne is playing at book stores, hoping to sell at least one CD.
awesome, a gem in the rough
has alot of west african musical influences.even the way she sings
This is very good indeed. The first time I heard tuneyards I thought of Captain Beefheart.
If you're listening to the tUnE-yArDs, you're doing something right in life :D
I love the song when i first heard this and saw the music video, but I have so much more respect and love for it after seeing this. Can not wait to see them tUnE yArDs live

Came here cos some loser is complaining about it on twitter lol. This song fucking slaps
I'm actually also from twitter but because that was the first time I heard it and I want to hear how bad it is some more
How the entire bookstore didn't immediately burst out laughing at 1:21, I have no idea.
@imgaston are you trying to "save face"??? hahaha, hope you get the reference
Now you know one thing thats right for sure.
That voice is insane.

@Lcrash200x I don'T know a lot about them so I kinda wondered if the BAss was only recorded. Asside it was a bit over tuned it sounded great ^^ The Bass that is
How many drummers does it take to get down to bizness
this song make me want to go to the beach and party
this is epic
I wish this was my bookstore, lol.
I miss this world that I once lived in where I hung out with Merrill Garbus and a bunch of other cool girls nearly every weekend!!!
