- Thousands of Afghan refugees in Indonesia are calling for their rights to be recognised.
Many are unable to work or study, and some have waited close to 10 years for resettlement.
Al Jazeera's Jessica Washington reports from Jakarta, Indonesia.

America is also trying to ramrod Afghani refugees amounting to 50,000 people into the Philippines. The Philippine Congress is experiencing stiff opposition to deny such a move for fear of destabilizing activities stemming from such flood of migrants.
USA was the cause of this mass exodus because of their warmongering ways in Afghanistan.
America should accept these refugees instead of throwing the responsibility to other countries and changing their laws overnight to deny the problem they themselves created.
Philippines did not invade Afganistan. We should not be the one to shoulder the burden of this problem.

It is a very very bad time for ASEAN to take in refugees, as many Malay and Filipinos stated that we are still resolving the refugee crisis in Myanmar 🇲🇲 and the Afghan crisis should be left at the hands of the Arabic people.

It is very hard time for SAARC to take Myanmar's Refugees.
When they fled and transited in Indonesia 10 years ago, they were in a position opposite to the Afghan government that came to power 10 years ago. And it is also inappropriate for the refugees to go too far from the conflict area. The refugees were supposed to stay temporarily in a country bordering Afghanistan. Now that it has changed, they must be returned to Afghanistan as soon as possible.
US fault of waging war at there, US need to take responsible also, now refugees from ukraine also come to SEA. And again US try to make NATO base in asia to fight China 😅😂😊

If you think that Indonesia isnt receiving any compensation from the Aussies then you're blind, this is similar to Turkey or Morocco receiving funds from EU to prevent migrants reaching Europe.

Australia IS one of the destination country, and they are a developed. Indonesian already have so much problem on its own to be solved, why do we have to solve others problem. So the question is why wouldn’t australia accept these refugees? There must be a reason right? And why do we indonesian get to be blamed about this when we’re not even the one who are suppose to deal with them for a long period of time?

Now, in the Phil, talks of accepting Afghan refugees are happening. The Philippines is not a good choice, we have a lot of problems here as it is. My sympathies go to the afghan refugees but my country doesn't have the capability to help. A lot of people here are already starving.
America should take them in. This is the result of their irresponsible withdrawal from Afghanistan.
USA wants to dump Afghans in the Philippines, who were former US employees, and now they wan to do this in Indonesia too. I feel for the Afghans but they are a security threat, if it was Taiwan, Japan I would accept them because they are not a threat.

I think former US employes are not such a threat and the Philippines is not exactly poor, just has a corrupt government, it can accommodate some but not much. But of course, behaviour and culture wise, Arab culture is not so compatible with Philippine culture as Filipinos value freedom in many things, and you can't whip or jail them for 'blasphemy' against religion. And in my opinion given the choice between an Ukrainian refugee and an Arab one, Ukrainian will be preferred.
Remember they are not currently in Afghanistan, they are in Indonesia so their lives are not in immediate danger. These people are not Asylum Seekers, like their brothers and sisters in Afghanistan, but an economic migrant. Indonesia is just a transit; they want to go to more prosperous countries like Australia so that they can live and get benefits, social security.
Genuine asylum seekers fear that their lives are in danger are crossing to neighboring countries, not looking for a more prosperous country. The problem is that it involves children ... Organizing a riots in Indonesia for their own and family interest.
Too many people abuse the meaning of human rights for their own benefit, for the benefit of their family. Besides that, there are also many charity organizations, activists who want to be famous for their own stepstone, looking for a name but involved other people to bear the cost, pay for them.
This has got to be stopped. The media, UNHCR should also stop to promote these economic migrants.
They are not men, Who would leave there wife or mother behind in a war torn country. All should return to Afghanistan and fight for there right's not leave the people they so call love ones. Some left 10 years ago for what and they are no better of now.
I worked with some refugees from Yemen, all men, they had all left their wives and children in their home country. They were enjoying the life in England with no plans to go back to visit their families.
Interestingly, I think most British men would rather save their wife and children before themselves, but middle Eastern men have different ethics.

Look at all the videos of people trying to flee Afghanistan, most of them are males. These men left the most vulnerable people behind women, children, and the elderly. Rather than fight they cowardly ran away in search for a better live for themselves.
Maybe When they left it was not war. And lots of people go work in other countries and send money home. Also for them it may be better for women to stay at home and not be in danger in another country and wait until it is safe to come

many ask why Indonesia does not want to help refugees even though it is an Islamic country. 1. Indonesia is not an Islamic country but a secular country and the government is even more secular so that the policies issued are not based on Islamic brotherhood but for the national interest. 2. Indonesia is a third world country where the majority of the population is poor, let alone helping others, to meet the needs of their families is already difficult, especially during a pandemic like this.

Actually their final destination is Australia and Australia is a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention. Indonesia was never a signed country to UN Refugee Convention even until now.. but in 2011 tougher detention laws issued due to 2000 & 2007 Australia-Indonesia Bilateral agreements. Regional Cooperation Arrangement (RCA), established in 2000. Under the RCA, Indonesian authorities intercept people thought to be intent on travelling irregularly to Australia or New Zealand. They were able to drive indonesian laws

The refugees in Indonesia ungrateful. Gathering for demonstration, break indonesia government rule during lockdown. They insist to be sent to Australia or Canada. These people should be sent back to Afghanistan for enjoying taliban ruling.
Wonder why these develop nations put this responsibility to us here in Southeast Asia. Why not put them in Europe, North America, Australia, or those rich Arab countries who are more economically better than us? We don't even have anything to do about their situation, but we are forced to shoulder this responsibility.

As an Indonesian I'm not proud to say this but if you evacuated from Afghanistan to Indonesia you've made a wrong decision.
Indonesia is not ready to accept refugees as "final destination" of refugees.
Lack of infrastructures, corrupt bureaucracies, not enough jobs for the evacuees (especially for the unskilled and those who dont speak our language)...
Also, do those evacuees actually want to spend the rest of their lives here in Indonesia or do they actually just stay until the war is over?

They are using Indonesia as a stepping stone to get to Australia or NZ. Indonesia is just a transit point for them as Indonesia is closest to these countries. They will probably pay an trafficking agent to get them to Australia by boat after arriving and staying in Indonesia for a while.

I won't judge them cuz we don't know their circumstances. It's the international laws that should take the brunt for restricting freedom of travel. Everyone has the right to leave but governments impede this by saying its tantamount to smuggling. I often passed by this "refugee camp"(I don't what it's called) when I go home. I felt sad every time I looked to that building, because I knew our government are very corrupt and lacking resources to help them.
I wish we could help them, but it's too bad that we can't even help our people that need help let alone another refugee.
I just hoped they could lived in stable, safe and happy life for them. ❤

Seeking refugee status in other countries is not the only solution. They should not leave, but to fight for their rights. Do you know how much pressure economically (feed and house them) and socially (assimilate into the social fabric) they put on their would-be adopted countries in the first seven or eight years of their stay? Let alone a country that is struggling to make ends meet for its own people.

I believe these men came to Indonesia months even years before Talibans took power. There are 4 main ethics in Afghanistan. Majority is Pashtun and Pashtun don't share power with ethnic. They even did ethnic cleansing in the past. Talibans are all Pashtun. These men are Haraza, Tajik, Ubek some of them are Pashtun.
Some comments wrote these men are cowards the should go back and fight for their country...It's not simple at all. Who will arm them and finance them. Which government will publicly support their cause...There are no leaders among them. I am sure all of these men just want to resettle in first world countries to work to make money to help their families.
My roommate here in Canada is Haraza ethnic from Afghanistan. So I understand a bit more about them.

Majority of the refugees try to enter Australia by boat.... The Australian government came up with very sophisticated system to push refugees boat back to to Indonesia... The Australian government pay Indonesia's government a lot of money to host them... Australian government do reviews refugees cases 99.9% will never qualify for Refugee resettlement in Australia or other developed country.. how would I know I used to work for the UNHCR for five years

The process of transferring them to the US will take months to even years, I don’t think US will hold their end of the bargain and make excuses why it took longer…if the refugees plan on staying permanently then our government will be providing support for them…hope our government won’t agree to this, I’m not surprised if they will start asking for benefits as well IF it happens…our country maybe the nicest and kindest but we’re not a dump site for whatever mess the US made

Those "refugees" that come to Indonesia, were lured by 'transit agents' mostly for Australian Entry. Indonesia since the time of Vietnam Boat People, only put their self as 'transit' destination. That's why Indonesia so far has no sign any charter on UN refugee.
So any thinking that Indonesia will settle those Refugee it's wishfull thinking. Besides, those refugees only want to go to Australia, or NZ. That's the only reason why they come to Indonesia.
