Sorry about the low energy in this episode you guys. I’ve been wearing myself out a bit and so I’m taking a day off to recoup before the next video. 😊
    *READ AFTER WATCHING*
We got to see two really awesome moments in this game! Visiting the Witch of the Woods house was AMAZING. I wish I could just touch everything 😂. Talk about the perfect place for me. Plants, animals and nature. Yes PLEASE!
Then the World Serpent was so well done! I especially loved when Atreus says “THIS IS GREAT!”. This game really is like watching a movie. I fiend for more of the story and the characters every time I end an episode!
Thanks to some Discord buddies after this episode, I’ve learned how/when you can parry/block. I was a bit confused in this one but, hopefully next time I can get it down better.

      Tips and Tricks:
      - Atreus will not automatically shoot his arrows. You must use Square to command him to do that.
      - I'm glad you understand how parrying works now! :) Always remember to block at the last possible second!
      - Yes, the weird looking letter is called an eth. Ð is the uppercase and ð is the lowercase. It is indeed pronounced like "th". It's still used in some languages, such as Icelandic, Norwegian, and Faroese.
      - Yeah, the Artifacts are just collectibles you can sell for Hacksilver.
      - Not "Brenna 'Thauthi'", but "Brenna Dauthi". The first "D" is normal. It's the second one that looks like "Ð". :)
      - You cannot block or parry Troll attacks. Just dodge. Also, the runes on a Troll's left leg and right arm can be hit with an axe throw to interrupt their respective attack and stun them for a second or two.
      - I prefer to see all of the adventure and your exploration. Seeing you solve puzzles and get loot is fun.
      - Yes, there are 51 of Odin's ravens to find and defeat. They are very well hidden, but they make a distinct cawing sound when you are near one and you may hear a distinct shimmering sound when looking at them as well. This is the sound you described as "cute" earlier, as there was a raven nearby.
      - The game is a bit misleading with the Reavers (the ice enemies). The ones who are made out of solid ice (they will have pointy icicle heads) cannot be attacked with the axe, but the ones who are just blue can be.
      - There will be a lot of obstacles that you cannot progress past until you get the right item or ability. Just be patient and explore what you can until then.
      - You got to meet Jormungandr, the World Serpent! He's also known as the Midgard Serpent. The area you ended this video in is called the Lake of Nine. It's essentially the hub area of the game and where you will spend a lot of time exploring. You can access a lot of different islands and other areas from the Lake of Nine, so explore to your heart's content! :)
      - Remember, all boat docks are marked with a white flag. You can also dock at certain beaches.
Awesome episode Marz! Can't wait for the next one.

I just finished this game a few days ago, and speaking as someone who adores The Last of Us, God of War takes that game crumples it up like a paper cup and throws it in the waste basket -- It's that freaking good! I don't mean to hype it up too much, but... boi oh boi, this game.
So yeah, 'yellow' attacks you can parry, but will parry you if you guard too early, 'red' you can't parry or guard against at all. And you can cancel out of every move by guarding, even heavy charge attacks, so don't be afraid to get stuck in some of the slower attack animations. And some advice on the blue ice enemies, only the dudes with the icey crowns on their head are immune to your axe, the rest you can just hack away at.

You should really try to get into a rhythm of manually using Atreus in combat (it's square). The fight you had in the room with the ceiling spikes would've been made much easier since his arrows inflict a good amount of stun, so that mixed with Kratos hand to hand moveset would've put enemies in a stun state much quick. Atreus is unbelievably helpful once you really get the hang of using him. Because he's also helpful you should also invest in upgrading him as you can increase the amount of stun and overall damage that his arrows do along with giving him different moves which are really helpful.
Also, back when you fought that troll you noticed an area you thought you couldn't get to, but that area is actually accessible. You needed to throw your axe into the wood at the top so that you could give Atreus a boost up to it. The wood that's breakable usually sticks out because it's already slightly damaged.

    • @mckrackin5324

The ceiling spikes would be even easier if you jump back to the boy and recall your ax. Let the ceiling crush the mini boss ;)

Another time the Heavy Draugr simply stood at the edge of gap where the rotating plank is located and was actually alive when I raised the Spike Ceiling again.

The thing with the shield is that if you are just holding the shield button down, it will block projectiles, but if you are trying to parry you need to wait and hit it just before the monster hits you. the 'yellow' halo is telling you its a parryable attack, the 'red' halo says you cant block it.

Maybe you already know this, but you can command Atreus to shoot arrows at anytime by pressing the square button. He has unlimited arrow and when you have him shot enemies their red Meter goes up quicker and it will allow you to perform a execution attack a lot faster.
Also for parrying, there are certain enemies that are bulkier and heavier whose attacks are harder to parry but the small skinny looking one can be parried easily.

For myself, I don't mind the slower pace of you just looking around every corner. If anything I prefer it, but only as long as it doesn't feel too tedious for the player(aka you). Although, I can't speak for anyone else.
Edit: Those red crystals looking stuff are just one of the many things that you will unlock a way to get past throughout the game, and those aren't the only things that will require a type of unlocking to pass. The Lake of Nine that you end the episode off has a lot of places you can explore as well, and some even useful, although be careful what you touch that is unknown to you because it might cause death. Also, while exploring the lake you can dock anywhere with a white flag like shown at the end of the episode as well as beaches.

Hi Marz, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. This one started a little slow. One thing to keep in mind is to pay attention to Atreus, his dialogues and comments are actually helpful, he will sometimes point to places of interest or tell you straight up to look up or down for different things. In the area where the spikes come down, you could've just jumped and make the enemies spawn, then jump back to the safe area and retrieve your axe, then the spiked ceiling would've taken care of all the monsters. The game will hint at easier ways to do things if you pay close attention.

You're fairly right when it comes to the stun thing. When timed right kratos can practically parry everything. But when he takes too hard a hit... it doesn't matter if you press it too early, if you don't parry an attack that's going to break your guard. Then... welp, yeah.

You can use the light and heavy runic attacks. It always helps to deal greater damage to the enemies although those have a certain amount of cooldown timer. Since you already know how to use the light runic attack, you can try out the heavy one. It looks amazing.
Since you're in the Sea of Nine, you should explore that area. You'll encounter enemies but also you'll get rare and even legendary items that'll be useful to upgrade your armour and your axe. Those artifacts that you keep getting, you can sell those in exchange of hacksilver. Also don't forget to upgrade Atreus, since his arrows inflict more damage. Also look for chests. The puzzles get tricky as you progress.
Gaining xp will let you purchase and upgrade more skills for Kratos and Atreus. The axe attack skills are definitely needed, but don't forget about shield attacks. Go through all the skills. Purchase according to what's necessary.
If you get resources required for upgrading Atreus, do it. Doing so will let Atreus inflict greater damage if you get overwhelmed by enemies.
Also try doing side quests in that area, before moving on to the later part of the game. Doing so will reward you with unique items and will help to level up.

Just some beginner tips. I know you've seen ones about using your shield already.
The shield can block pretty much all attacks except for ones that have a red circular aura to them. When enemies attack they often have either a yellow or red circular aura around them. Yellow ones you can block and you can parry them as well if timed right. If you do block the yellow ones and don't parry they will break your guard and leave you open to attacks. So, always try to parry. Especially if there are several enemies around that can hit you. If they are red get out of the way.
Don't forget to use BOY. He is extremely helpful especially when you upgrade his skill tree and encounter stronger enemies later in the game. He can also break up their attacks sometimes as well.
The level design in this game is extremely well done. There are nooks and crannies all over the place. Each area is like its own puzzle. This game doesn't have a good map or way of directing you and that was on purpose. They want the player to pay attention to their surroundings and figure out the path to take instead of relying on way points all over the screen, constantly bringing up a map, having a mini-map in the corner of the screen, etc. It's common to get a bit lost here and there. There are plenty of landmarks all over to keep you from getting too lost.
As far as crafting don't be afraid to use what you have to upgrade. You don't really have to save resources. There is plenty of loot out there in the world and you don't have to buy everything anyways. Just pick what armor and upgrades suits you play style. If they have a piece of chest armor that favors strength over defense and you're an attack heavy player pick the one with more strength and vice versa if you want to be more defensive. The longer you play you'll get more armor available that favors your certain play style or they have ones that are more balanced as well, so you can increase your stats fairly evenly.
Just some tips. Glad you're enjoying it. The game is incredible and one of the best this generation.

Here's a bit of info regarding the blocking and countering in the game: When an enemy swings and a ring of yellow pulses out, this is a block-breaking attack that will stun you momentarily and leave you open to attack. If a red ring pulses, the attack will break your block AND deal damage to you, so you really need to dodge those. To parry, you need to block at the moment RIGHT BEFORE a regular attack connects with you. As for the different moves and overall complexity of the combat, I would suggest taking a few minutes at the start of a session to go over all your skills and abilities so that they're fresh in your mind. Can't wait for the next video!

I haven't seen anyone answer this in the comments, but the troubles with parrying you were having at the beginning with that one enemy was because he was too strong. For weaker enemies, you want to put up your shield about the moment they pull back their weapon/prep for attack. With that specific enemy you were fighting, you will notice a light circle will come out of its' weapon before it attacks sometimes. That means it's a power attack, and the slow-mo you were seeing was the enemy breaking your block. When you parry weaker enemies, you will also get a slow-mo moment, but instead of you leaning back, they will lean back and be open up for you to counter.
On another note, just wanted to mention I think your exploring is awesome. One of the reasons I enjoy your videos is because you take your time, as opposed to most other RUclipsrs who rush through games way too fast and miss everything. It makes your videos more entertaining!

I'm so glad I didn't watch any trailers before playing because I was completely shocked and freaked out at the World Serpent's appearance. Every playthrough I've watched were by people who had seen it in the trailer and it's just variations of boring "Wow wtf oh it's from the trailer ok".
Also my advice, just throw your axe at everything. There were a few times you said you couldn't go somewhere but those places where definitely accessible just by throwing your axe at them.

While aiming with the axe, R1 is a fast throw while R2 is a slower, but more powerful throw.

So, you may notice how there's sometimes a red or yellow circle right before an enemy attacks. The yellow means that the attack cannot be blocked but can be parried. The red circle means it can't be blocked or parried and you need to dodge.

I love your content and how you wanna throughly make sure you dont want to miss things and explore where you can but got we triggered ya didnt notice the breakable wood right at top when you thought you couldnt climb up @ 29:08 theres chains to the right to indicating you can climb back down but it's fine. I'll just have to ignore it and do it if I ever get this game in time XD

Tips: to parry, you have to block right when the enemy is about to hit you, then you get an opening. You can parry moves that flashes yellow. Red-flashes means you can't parry nor block so you have to dodge. BTW enemies can break your guard / blocking like they did at 9.24. In that situation, you cant do anything other than to dodge.

Atreus is very helpfull. Easy to forget him. Upgrade him aswell and try to use him in combat. and trolls weak place is their face. Throw the axe at their face.

Before the enemy attack there will be a hint if you could parry or block the attack basically if it's red you can't block/parry it if it's yellow you can

You actually could have got that chest that Atreus was looking at at the beginning of the video! Also, don't be afraid to explore more.. I'd recommend almost never going straight to your goal, because this game is filled with a bunch of optional areas, bosses etc.

Also, trough out the game you'll find new powers and abilities that will allow you access to areas you couldn't get to before, so don't worry if you can't get trough the red crystals now, you'll find a means later.
You should also try to learn how to use the Boy in combat, as well as use your shield to block a lot more. It helps out a lot in half the battles.

I did notice how Kratos gets less strict and shows more emotions towards Atreus as they go further into their dangerous journey, because he knows that he can easily lose him.
