    Good no nonsense review. I grabbed one and regret it due to the compression strap issue and critically the plastic strips for the ladder adjustment chafe on my shoulder blades badly with a t-shirt on.

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 года назад +1

      I have since took off the compression straps because they are useless really. I don't know why Osprey thought that they were a good idea. I hope that I don't have the same issue with chaffing but time will tell. I bought it for winter camps and backpacking trips so I haven't had it out much yet. I wonder would the Kestrel be a better option. Cheers for your comment, I'll keep a close eye on the chaffing situation

      Hi John, I never used a rain cover. I used an Osprey pack liner instead, which worked well.

  • @WitcherOnTrail
    @WitcherOnTrail Год назад

    What did you think of the skimpy hip belt? It seems like if your waist is more than 34" or 36", the hip padding will be very short in length, and won't cover anything across the front of the hip and abdomen - it's like the hip pads stop abruptly at the side, and it's just bare strap fully across the front of you.

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  Год назад +1

      I noticed that too, there is reduced padding on the shoulder straps too. Honestly I haven't been getting along with this pack. I was between sizes and I haven't found it to be particularly comfortable, particularly on my shoulders but again that could be a sizing issue.
      The lightweight means that there are added compromises such as the reduced padding and even though I take good care of my gear, I have already torn the mesh on the front somehow so durability is another compromise.
      I'm going to stick with it for as long as I can but I feel your pain 😄

    • @WitcherOnTrail
      @WitcherOnTrail Год назад +1

      @@RamblingOn yeah that's a concern of mine - with reduced hip padding, it might not sit on the hip bones as well - which means the shoulders carry more of the weight. I tried the Exos two separate times at my local outfitter, wearing a t-shirt, and figured the "hip grip" was good, but not great. I think if I wore a jacket or a fleece the hip grip might get worse. It was very comfortable at 20lbs, but at 30lbs could tell it was getting close to it's max. Thanks for the feedback!

    Respect your advice. Saved up, looking for aprox 50l pack. Currently use an old Atmos AG58, gifted too me, and not right frame size. Want get weight down where possible.
    I keep coming back to the Exos 48L, so would you say yep go for it, or recommend something else ??. Cheers.

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 года назад +2

      I can't say for sure because there is no one bit of gear that will suit everyone. I haven't used this pack much at all yet and I do like it, it's very well made but it definitely has it's draw backs. The hipbelt pockets could be better, they're not the biggest and can be difficult to close with one hand. The compression straps are pretty much useless and because of the frame the pack curves inside so it's not the easiest backpack to pack. If you use a pack liner it is quite hard to see your gear as you pack it in.
      Some other options are the Gregory focal 48l which I think is even lighter. The Osprey kestrel 48, more rugged. The Alpine airzone 40:50 camino. Atom packs are supposedly fantastic and custom fit to suit you but they're twice the price. If you check out second hand packs you could find yourself a real bargain that has had minimal use.
      Sorry I can't give a definitive answer for you but I think if you can get a good price on the exos then it would be worth a shot. At least then if you decided to sell it on you could get your money back.

      I bought this new Exos 58 and also the new Exos 38 a few weeks ago. No, they make no squeaky or crunchy noises. But make sure you slide these plastic pieces up, which are sitting sideways on the frame tube, in order to get some tension on the "adjustor plates". I hope you understand what I mean. I have only one problem with the 58 model. The sternum strap creeps up unwantedly. This is not the case on the 38 one.

    Exos 48 or Kestrel 48?

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 года назад +1

      I had the same dilemma.. The reason I went for the Exos was for the suspended mesh back system. If the Kestrel had that same system I would have chosen the kestrel. Both are great back packs with similar features so it depends on what you want or need really. The Exos is lighter but the kestrel is more tough and robust in it's materials.

  • @JammyJerry
    @JammyJerry 2 года назад

    Great purchase there Jason 👍🏻 how do you rate it so far, were you able to put some miles onto it in the meantime? I read in the comments that you might have preferred the Kestrel instead. I always had the previous Exos on my list as it has thoroughly proven itself over the past few years but I didn’t realise they were coming out with an 2022 update. I can get it for €144 plus shipping but I wonder whether it’s a jack of all trades and master of none kinda pack 🤔

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 года назад +1

      I haven't had it out too much yet but it will be my main pack over the winter. The kestrel looks like a great backpack, it's rugged and has more features than this as far as I remember. I would say it's not really a jack of all trades pack in comparison. It's light weight and great for long multi day treks .As far as being a jack of all trades I would say that that description suits the Kestrel better.
      I can't wait to put the exos through it's paces. That is a fantastic price that you found, it might be worth giving it a try and if you didn't like it I'm sure you would get your money back if you sold it on

    • @JammyJerry
      @JammyJerry 2 года назад

      @@RamblingOn It’s been mentioned in a few reviews that the Exos doesn’t perform all that well with lighter loads around the 10kg mark but carries heavier 15+kg loads really well. I usually roll with 7-10kg all in using a frameless pack, even on a multi day trip I wouldn’t need to pack that much extra food, simply too many Pubs, Forecourts and Corner Shops in Ireland for food on the go. Don’t think I would have any use for the Exos here in Ireland but I am playing with the idea to hike around Menorca in Spring, there it could be useful to bring as my only piece of luggage.
      If I ever had 15+kg for an old school overnighter for example with basha, army bivy and Defence 4, it would be all too bulky to fit the Exos and I wouldn’t walk further than 10k anyways hence I thought of it as a Jack of all trades term, not sure where this pack would fit my needs exactly but the price is too good me thinks. Now the Kestrel 58 is an interesting pack for those heavier winter camps....decisions decisions 🤔 anyways thanks for replying mate, hope you are keeping well 👍🏻

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 года назад +1

      @@JammyJerry oh I didn't see those. If my pack weighed less than 10kg I would definitely fit it into my 40litre decathlon bag. My winter hikes and multi days will be around 12kgs or maybe a bit more with camera gear so it should be good for that. The price is too good to pass up 😄 Hopefully you can find a pack to suit most of your needs.

      @@RamblingOn I was simply told to source my own zipper back then, she had no idea about the kind of zip I was describing to her 😆 Back then I was thinking of a chunky and heavy duty YKK 2 way zipper. I decided against a waterproof zipper as they can be quite difficult to operate one handed, plus there’s a decent rain flap covering the zipper anyways. There’s a good choice on EBay, shouldn’t cost more than €15.

    Ive got the green colour, older model Exos 48, its a brilliant pack, but after trying on the new Exos I think Osprey have made the perfect backpack ! By making the back adjustable and putting back the hip belt pockets. Only one criticism, the hip belt buckle looks a bit fragile, but nothing is perfect ! Well done Osprey. 180 euros in the 58 degrees shop. Good video !

      At least with osprey you know if the buckle breaks they will just replace it no questions asked. I have the same bag and agree it feels a bit naff. Hipbelt buckle you should be able to slap on the best one possible as really, what does a heavy hipbelt buckle actually do overall? It's sitting right on your hips. I'd actually even prefer one of these super strong aircraft aluminium buckles that hook on instead of having a mechanism. They weigh even less than plastic and are much stronger. Nice review. I bought the outgoing model at a discount in the winter and I've put some good miles on it and it's great. Very comfy! I use it without the brain for reduced weight and for easier access to the main compartment. I would have liked the hipbelt pockets that they brought back with this version.
    It looks like the lower, side compression straps can still be routed on the inside of the pocket like the old models. The 2022 manual refers to them as insideout compression straps still.

      I've always wanted an exos backpack. The older models are very well reviewed and a favourite among many so I can't imagine this one being any different. I reckon I would use it without the lid too unless I'm heading off for a winter camp and need the added space.
