Thanks to James Holzhauer, this guy went from being the Ballsiest Player Ever, to just another 3 day champ.
Hes still the ballsiest player ever
SY Tang this is not because of James this happened in 2016 not 2019

He's saying that this was a ballsy move in the era before Holzhauer, but Holzhauer made it normal.
@@epicsamurai5 Holzahuser never risked the game though, If Phillip misses it, it's a run away for Sean
Ken Jennings proved Holzhauer's strategy was all balls and no brains.
Haha, I was like "Vancouver is too easy of a response. It has to be something else."
My immediate thought was "DUH, VANCOUVER!" And the longer he waited and pondered, the more I doubted myself.. And then when he said Vancouver, I shouted "Nooo!!" And then it was correct.
I thought that, but I also thought, it's just a daily double and a lot of people have trouble with geography. My only thought was if there was another city by vancouver that is like "all port" kind of like long beach in la.
That seemed an obvious answer to me also. Maybe though that's because I live in Washington and have been to Vancouver.
I thought so too! I legit thought it was Vancouver then I started double guessing myself 😆
At first I thought it said SouthEAST and I was like “Well Halifax, duh, that’s clearly our business port in Eastern Canada”, and then I was like “wait a minute, it’s not 15 miles away from the states” so I read it again and saw southWEST and realized that of course the answer is Vancouver.
Everyone in the room was applauding and relieved for him. Except Sean. He was stone faced.
Dude, no lie. A rare case of the match being clinched either way whether the question is answered correctly or not.
Sean’s a hater
@The Postman If Philip got it wrong Sean has the game and wins over $13,000. Now the best he can leave with is $2,000. He just lost $11,000. Granted, Philip had the lead already so it was his game to lose, but I don't blame Sean for rooting for failure here.
Sean was thinking, “I fucking knew it was Vancouver immediately. Dammit.”
Look again. You can see he just finished clapping at 0:45, albeit not for as long as everyone else.
You could see Philip thinking, "Is it really Vancouver? It can't be THAT easy!" Thankfully for him, it was.
This is the only explanation that makes sense, as there's like only possibility. Each province has only one major city each. Unless the producers told him in an earpiece to pause.
@@speabody And Vancouver is one of the only major Canadian cities that even contacts the ocean. The "southwestern" essentially narrowed it down to Victoria and Vancouver. But if you have a basic understanding of where those two cities are geographically, you can immediately deduce that it's Vancouver.
@@speabody not true, Alberta has both Calgary and Edmonton and Ontario has both Toronto and Ottawa
@@themartdog I'm speaking in reference to the clue. There are not many major cities in Canada. "Southwestern" easily eliminates all other possibilities
@@themartdog the clue said "southwestern... [port] city", so it really only left Vancouver or Victoria as options
Lol I bet Sean was pissed
You can see him physically sink and scream in his head, now knowing he can't possibly catch him.
@Boco Corwin guy on the far right.
@Boco Corwin Why were you asking "Sean?" to "hence the title of the game" in the first place?
@Boco Corwin Yes, it is called jeopardy. Read the full conversation again. "You can see him physically sink and scream in his head, now knowing he can't possibly catch him" which peter replies to with "hence the title of the game" since sean is now in jeopardy. So idk why you replied to him with "Sean" lol.

Sure we have Holzhauser, but I can't imagine how he must have felt getting that answer right, especially after all that hesitation.

I’m from Georgia and I knew the answer. I was about to be screaming at my phone
I'm from New Mexico, and got the answer before he did. 😁
I'm about 45 miles south of Vancouver, down in the US, I had no idea it was Canada's busiest port, but when he wasn't sure what to answer I just said to the screen, "It's gotta be Vancouver! Just say it!" haha. I only got it because of how specific it was worded. Southwest city 15 miles from the boarder, must be Vancouver! Haha

They gave him a (comparatively) long time to answer.
And now, regular Jeopardy watchers are all experiencing every day the feeling you describe, as James H does this routinely. No matter how many runaway games he has, I continue to get nervous when he does a big bet. Of course, HE is never nervous.
After answering this extremely easy question myself I picked up Stephen King's book "It" and was three words away from finishing the entire thing before he finally answered the damn question, I guess if I didn't go make dinner and reply to 846 emails before picking up the book I would have finished it in time

From thinking that he'd thought "crap I'm going to lose my money" to "crap I'm going to die" in a single comment. Well done.
that’s a nice daily double you’ve got there. it would be a real shame if something were to happen to it
All Philip needed to do was wager around 8k to make it a runaway. 19k was really risky because if he was wrong, he is pretty much done. At least with a loss of 8k, he is still in the game.
Clearly he felt confident in the category.
This is one of the reasons why I couldn't play Jeopardy. I might know the answers (if I could remember to phrase them in the form of a question) but I'm too math deficient to figure out what to wager.
The stones on this guy! That was a make or break bid! He gets it wrong, he loses. If he gets it right, he wins. Final jeopardy doesn’t even matter. Everything for Sean rode on it too. And Philip took him right out of the equation. Brilliant!
James Holzhauer wagered $25k. He is second, but 1st when this was uploaded.

During the GOAT event, he made the biggest true Daily Double wager of all time: 20,200, beating out Roger Craig's 18,000 in the 2011 ToC.
BLSoldier true, but that was point values, not dollar values so they don’t really count? Idk that’s what I think not too sure
This was right before Final Jeopardy though. He had the lead so he didnt have to do it, makes this crazier imo
The way Alex says, “YES!“ when Phillip gives the correct question is beyond priceless; you can hear the immense amount of relief in his voice.
It’s never specified how much time contestants get to come up with the correct response to regular round clues or daily double clues, as the hosts control that “time’s up“ buzzer, but I imagine he gave that response just in time.
They give him so much time!
I love how genuinely happy Alex sounds when he guessed right.
If Phillip got that wrong that would’ve been the most painful moment on jeopardy
Oh my gosh I feel so happy for this guy. He must’ve felt so relieved and happy, and he won 19000 more!

Alex: "Wasn't that a gutsy move? WOW." My thoughts exactly. Rest in peace, Alex.
This was years ago and I was still worried for him.
Sean wasn't impressed
I’m glad they gave him some time to answer. Sometimes I’ve seen daily doubles get cut off rather quickly
The variable timing on the DDs might be due to the editing.
It looks like the youtube algorithm has brought us brothers together once more
You know, I remember being in his proof and logic class one semester and seeing him on Jeopardy! the next semester. His choice of wager was unsurprising.
Dope, super easy question. It’s the only major port in southwest Canada.
He was overthinking it probably, especially with that much money on the line, the obvious answer seems wrong
That's what I thought. Maybe I have some bias being from Washington state, maybe those outside the west coast are less familiar with it.
@@benharder7816 Also he was stalling so there would be no other opportunity for scoring.

I have both sailed into Vancouver's port and driven across the border from Washington to Vancouver. I knew the answer right away! Glad he got it right!
This is crazy! I remember watching this exact episode as a kid and saying to my parents “Wow! That guy totally guessed”
Does daily double "thinking" time take up the allowed time for a round? If so, maybe he purposely stalled to prevent the other guy from having a chance to answer more clues?
Yea it does. He purposefully did it. He knew the clue will be easier since it was at 1200. Good strategy.
Realistically he knew he'd win if he knew the answer because the other guy would have to pick up 7000 or so to not make it a runaway, there wasn't that much money left on the board
@@Cmackie311 Imagine if he had said "Vancouver". Then Alex would have said "Yes - Wait, NO! [END OF ROUND BUZZER SOUNDS]. Alex: "I will tell you folks WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?" after this break.

Daily Doubles can turn a game on its head like this one did. So many Jeopardy players just don’t understand this concept.

WOW!!! Hello big wager for Phillip $19,000. Luckily he did beat the buzzer or else he would’ve blown everything. It was very tough for Sean to take the lead back and Kristen was not even close to both gentlemen. That kind of reminds me of Leonard Cooper’s $18,000 wager on a Daily Double.

Alex was genuinely happy when he guessed right.
He knew it. He just wanted to play it up for drama.
I agree he knew it, there aren't many major cities in southwestern Canada, but I think he was doing it to run the clock and guarantee a runaway.
Don’t think so. As he got very close to the time limit buzzer sounding which would mean the question is voided then and he gets its wrong. I think he had an idea, but was never 100% sure, maybe 70-80%.
No way. He was like a millisecond away from the buzzer
kevg715 if you watch jeop regularly I'm sure you've seen Alex. He's the best I've ever seen by far and I know he waits to answer to add some drama when he definitely knows the answer
Keep in mind, this is an American show, and the player is clearly not native American or Canadian. Even if he was born in America, Americans suck at geography.
We love and miss you Alex.
That answer scared the crap out of me!
This was a 3000 IQ play, he legitimately timer stalled so that noone else even had a chance to catch up
I knew the answer instantly and so did most I imagine.
If I was one of the other contestants I would have yelled "it's Vancouver you moron" after about an hour and a half of waiting for him to answer. I wouldn't have cared about the money, I just want to get to the other seven questions we could have seen if he didn't take all day answering such a simple question
