The Price Is Right has always encouraged the audience to yell out prices. The story behind this clip is that Jose was told the price by Theodore Slauson an audience member and avid viewer of the show. Slauson, studied the prices from previous episodes as they remained the same from show to show. In fact there are a ton of episodes where contestants listened to him, and some of those shows have 4 or more perfect bids. This is the same Theodore Slauson who provided the exact bid amount to a contestant in the show case show down which resulted in the show changing how the prices are determined to ensure that memorization could not longer occur.
Not to mention you should never round up if you want the exact amount. Go to the stores, except for those discount type places you rarely see an evening round number like 1,000.
This is an example of why Bob was the greatest host ever. The exact number in a bid is so rare but he didn't miss a beat when the bell chimed. Then was able to humorously heckel a contestant who made an extremely poor bid, obviously realizing he was the one who had it exactly right, and did it all without a single stutter. He made it look so easy. We miss you Bob!

@@Reggie2000 A bodybuilder died and went to hell, while there he asks, "can I get a protein shake?". The demon laughs and says "there is no 'whey' in Hell!"
For those of you who are struggling to find out why bidding 999 was a bad idea here. If indeed Jose thought it was less then 1,000 he could have bid $1 and had 100% chance of winning. But since he bid $999 if the price was $998 or less they all would have lost and had to rebid. Either he was absolutely dumb but got lucky, or he somehow really thought it was $999 dead on, but still most people would play it safe and say $1.
It's the perks of going last. If the first person bids 1$, the next person will wall them in by bidding slightly more. Going last means people can't bid against you
Nick Cowan I've seen one episode of The Price is Right where the first person bid $1, the second person bid $2, the third person bid $3 and then the fourth person bid $4 and automatically won. It was hilarious, and also goes to show that bidding $1 can be risky depending on what strategy other people use. Technically everyone could do that and it would guarantee the last bidder to win every time, but that would also take the suspense out of the show. If everyone started doing that, my guess is the director would come in and tell them to bid something else and re-shoot, or just change the format of the game. But people rarely do that, because it's a pretty unsafe strategy unless you're the last person bidding.
Actually, watching this and looking at the people bidding "1200", "1000" and "1300", I was thinking "Are you crazy? Prices are almost always "x99" or "x49", never the even thousand. If you think it is $1300, bid $1299 and so forth.
OK I'm not understanding all of these comments about Bob carrying $500 in his pocket for 35 years. Of course he carried $500 in his pocket in case someone hit the bid perfectly. It happens several times a year so he carries the $500. To Bob, $500 is nothing. He got paid millions. And it wasn't his money anyway. It was the show's money.
+1FatHappyBirthday "It happens several times a year" Are you not watching the same video as the rest of us? Bob clearly said this was an historic moment that has never happened before.
+Daniel Cox I think Bob was referring to the fact that Jose won by bidding a dollar under another person because the only possible way for him to win is to get it exactly right or the other person would be closer to the correct price (or they both go over). I'm sure plenty of other people have gotten the price exactly right before, just not with such a close bid.
+Daniel Cox Yes, getting the correct bid happens in many, many episodes. But never has anyone gone last and bid a dollar under another bid and got the price right. That was a stupid move because the rules are closest without going over, so if he was the last person why would he bid one dollar less than 1000 instead of one dollar more? One dollar less than 1000 only gave him 1 chance of winning at all, bidding one dollar more than 1000 would have gave him 200 chances of winning.

Actually, there was no suspense whatsoever. Whenever Bob did that, the person he was talking to was always the winner.
+Daniel Sharples Suspense? He kept mentioning Hose over and over, pretty much just gave it away???
Musicrecords10 He was prolonging whether or not the person got it right, making them more and more nervous.
+Daniel Sharples DOnt you know when Bob Barker did that to particular contestant or when they are on stage that usually means they got it right.
Bob was such a showman. The way he played with the contestants was just so awesome

This is an example of why Bob was the greatest host ever. The exact number in a bid is so rare but he didn't miss a beat when the bell chimed.
If he THOUGH it ??
Good catch Genie thanks I fixed it.
MrArrmageddon i still don't get it man... wouldn't everyone just bid one dollar then?
It's the perks of going last. If the first person bids 1$, the next person will wall them in by bidding slightly more. Going last means people can't bid against you
Nick Cowan
I've seen one episode of The Price is Right where the first person bid $1, the second person bid $2, the third person bid $3 and then the fourth person bid $4 and automatically won.
Not always true. I remember one episode with this crazy guy who knew all the exact prices for everything. The scooter he bid on was $2148.

+1FatHappyBirthday - It used to be $100.
+1FatHappyBirthday "It happens several times a year"
Are you not watching the same video as the rest of us?
Good point; it wasn't his money anyway, it was the show's!
I love that even when they don't win the bid, everyone cheers for the winner. Great energy in that gameshow!
