  • I wanted to use the 178 with the 30 drill, but first had to wake it from hibernation and get the spool valves operational.

Another very enjoyable video Dan,I worked the same type drill in 1972 behind a 178 without MP they were both 2 years old at the time,I was 16 back then,we towed a chain harrow behind the drill to cover the seed. There was a Massey main dealer near us so there was a lot of Massey equipment in the area,Combines, balers, tractors, drills.

The best farming RUclipsr on you tube by a country mile. Excellent video again Dan, you remind me of a farmer I worked for in Cornwall in the late eightees, he was meticulous with routine maintenance and operated old MF equipment bought from new. I visited the farm last summer and was amazed to see the same MF35x I used to scrape the yard with still on scraper duties. He made sure the tractor and scraper were washed off each morning, obviously a good policy for longevity of his equipment.

Well done Dan in sorting out your hydraulic problem it worked out well in the end. Also Dan it was sweet to see 178 working the drill no problem to her. Never worked a 178 but had the pleasure of working a 165. She was a grand tractor but they traded her in for a case 895 why I don't know! But its great to see you putting life into the old girls. Great video Dan keep them coming

I just subscribed to your channel Being raised on the farm we had Massey Ferguson tractors. My dad like to trade for new tractors about every 2 to 3 years the largest tractor was the MF 285 it was one of my favorites, it had a much smoother ride then the smaller tractors , we usually had two to three tractors, we never had a 4 wheel drive tractor. Today I have 3 tractors all are two wheel drive tractors, a 1989 IMT 539 canopy ,open station 39 hp. 2004 John Deere 5320 cab 64 hp. and a 1990 Massey Ferguson 3070 cab about 90 hp. All 3 tractors have front loaders. All 3 are great tractors.

Very often depends on people themselves, how small implements do they use, like the newer tractor in the background rolling with very small roller, don t think thats excellent on diesel as such. But that s up to people to make the choice thems. Thanks for vid.

That must be quite a rare tractor i don't recall seeing 4 wheel drive tractors of the 100 series when they were new but they started to get popular when the 500 series came out and now of course it seems rare to see a modern 2 wheel drive tractor. Lovely video that showing all the different views of the drill as well. Thanks for sharing it.

The 178 was the first MF I drove with Multi Power, I think I was 13 at the time and discovered that full throttle, high gear and Multi Power was not a very stable way of getting across a field, my older brother liked the no engine braking when going down hill to speed up the trips between farms (clearly insane since you would never stop safely is someone pulled out in front of you)

Nice to see old kit being used for the purpose it was built for .I used to have a 15 row MF30 drill like yours but on 11-28 wheels complete with a grass box and the Reekie harrow as with your drill.Eventually we put blanking plates in the fertilizer side and removed the central partitions so that we could put half a ton of seed in it .I used either a 165 or mostly a 185 to pull it. Fully loaded I could plant up to eight acres before refilling the drill with seed and was able to do that in one hour in good conditions. Best Drill I ever had !

Really like your massey. The leaks are so minor if the tractor were still dirty from the dust might be difficult to see. NOW I dont want to promote not fixing leaks because they just increase never decrease thus finally creating a dirt ball. My older brother told the story of my father buying a car during the thirties, the car was overheating. Dad cleaned all the dirt off the engine and problem fixed. Probably valve cover gasket.

Answer for the drill, if it only requires single acting service and to retain pressure is to tap a pipe into the top cover and use pressure control to maintain pressure. You will then need to hold the links up at the top when you release the pressure. If it has a proper MF selector valve behind your left knee on the top cover, tap the tipping pipe into that and use pressure control.
This is just an alternative that might suit many people whether they have a French built tractor with those spool valves or no spool valves or indeed the later Kontak valves fitted to later models to the left of the platform.

@@CowfarmerDan Cheers, was just curious really 😀 We ourselves use a Banner Lane 575 for our vintage mondays through to sundays LOL
The 100 series really look a handsome machine in the 4wd versions. The 135 version, which I've only ever seen on youtube restoration videos not in the flesh is cute as a button 🤠
It's amazing to see how many 135, 165 and also David Brown white tractors 885, 990, 995, 996 are still earning their keep and getting ALL the jobs done on small farms all over the place here in Ireland and no doubt across the pond there.
On the bigger farm with modern machinery, it's still bloody lovely to get out the old MF for a day on the seed drill or tedding hay etc........then there is the 1200 💙🚜💙, a beutiful old machine.
Air conditioning and fully clutchless gear changes are still very very nice though!😁
