    It's great to see someone else who appreciates the Gen 3 Dynamic chronograph! It's a fantastic watch and one of Omega's best put-together pieces, full of character. There was a time about 15 years ago when it was a minor darling on internet watch forums, but it drifted back into obscurity afterwards, just as you say. A couple of bits of trivia to add to your excellent review: First, the three-minute markers on older chronographs may have a connection to pay phones (that gets reported a lot, but no watch company I've spoken with could confirm it), but the primary reason on chronographs is because 3 minutes is 1/20th of an hour. Pilots use time divisions like that for navigation by "dead reckoning", flying for specific fixed times per coordinates. You even find a few very unusual early flight watches marked *only* in 3-minute intervals for pilots' use.
    Second, there were actually five known versions of the chrono model:
    - The two you demonstrate with the black face and slightly different minute hashes on the chrono register;
    - another variation on the black face with the green and white insignia of Thailand's Royal Irrigation Department (I know, talk about obscure...) on the dial above 6 o'clock, ref. 5242.52.00
    - Targa Florio you mention, and
    - a silver faced version made for the German market and marked "AVD" (Automobilclub von Deutschland, for their 100th anniversary) on the case back, ref. 5292.30.06.
    There were also some variations on the time-date model, but that's for another time. ^-^
    Fantastic review, love your work and look forward to more!

      First and foremost, thank you for all this excellent Feedback! Info is hard to find on these, so it's always great to hear something new. "Royal Irrigation Department"... I feel like I need this model, haha. Thank you for all the trivia/details on the Dynamic!

    OMEGA DYNAMIC Chronograph III, 5 stars rare bird... during the span of 3 short years of production, Omega only sold 8000 of this discontinued magnificent military style timepiece worldwide, definitely a collector item if you can still find one in good shape. The 44 jewels movement is super accurate, chronograph runs smooth as silk. For a vintage watch that is over 20 years old, mine is still ticking like an energizer bunny, I like it better than Speedmaster reduced, they are both about the same size, but the black face and yellow hand of the Omega Dynamic 3 chronograph makes it more standout and eyes catching

    What are your thoughts on the Omega Dynamic Chronograph? Also, what is your favorite 38mm Chronograph? Let me know down below. Also, I hope the case line footage at the end helps. If I have a particularly good example of a vintage/out of production watch, anticipate a full on case line review to be featured at the end.

    I know you talked about this particular watch when you were on properly wound, but it's great to see even more detail and history and everything about this watch in this video. Man, I want to get one now, LOL. And yes, those large pushers are definitely a standout feature for this particular design. You can never say never, but I feel it's safe to assume that you will probably never sell this watch. Enjoy it!

      +Wing Yip Yeah. I never gave this one a “proper” review and it deserves it... I love talking vintage, so this was a fun episode to shoot. I like the pushers on my Omega 3511.50, more so than the Dynamic, and it's my favorite feature of the watch. Like you was lucky to pick mine up just under $1K. Good review!

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      +Eric Nielsen I also really like the crown on that model, the 3511.50 - what size is it? - nice! Under $1k on that? What a find.

    • @Eric_Nielsen
      @Eric_Nielsen 6 лет назад

      39 by 45 by 13.3mm. Some of the 39mm is added thickness on the right side guarding the crown & pushers; bezel is 37mm. I have to use fingernails to wind from the crown which is tiny but flat-sided.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      +Eric Nielsen Good dimensions on that piece. Ahhh, so it’s likely a little crowded then on the righthand side(?). Interesting... I’ve never seen a “Reduced” (or any smaller Speedy variants) in person. Although I contemplated an early Speedy Reduced, I ultimately settled on this guy. Happy I did.

  • @alfredsfunvideos4270

    Hey Patrick, great and very in depth video about the dynamic. I personally have a Speedy reduced and it’s about 39mm so close. Love that I can literally wear this watch in every occasion and make it work. I have to say the all brushed look of the dynamic is perfect too! Tough call but I think I need to start a hunt for one!

    I actually don’t know that many 38mm Chronos, love my lil Seagull though, the retro line of the TH Carrera has a 39mm Chrono which I like a lot but it isn’t as nicely exicuted as your Omega.
    The Dynamic line is stunning, there is more than the speedy at Omega, unfortunately they are not too innovative at Omega anymore and just relay nowadays just in bringing out another Speedy version. Sad but true.
    Your model is pefect, the yellow is the sugar in the tea, really nicely done. Like the bracelet a lot, it’s a lil bit president style and I guess it does suit the watch very well.
    And great to have a watch with punchers 😂😂 you made my day with that 🙏🏻🙏🏻
    Oye, may I ask you how you do the lighting in your vids? This is where I struggle a bit as I relay on natural light ...
    Thanks and cheers, Konstantin

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +2

      +Mister B Yeah, of course! I always shoot at odd hours so lighting is crucial. While I couldn’t recommend the brand I use (as I don’t believe they’re of quality), check out LED Panels, 300+ LED’s in the least. There’s a lot to look into concerning lights, but here are some things to look for: Light Output (Brightness), Power Source, Bi-Colored or “Daylight” (one tone), CRI Rating (Color Accuracy of Light Source)... So, for instance, I purchased LED’s that are on canvas panels that I can roll up for run-and-gun work, but also pop up on a tripod (2xPanels) for lighting subjects or myself. If you mainly do talking hands, depending on what you’re shooting, one Key Light may be enough. There’s a gentleman with a channel called “DSLR Video Shooter” who reviews LED Light Panels in mass comparison, I highly recommend you check him out. (Falcon Eyes is the brand I use... He talks about it, but try and avoid them. I’ve had one too many problems to recommend personally).

    • @mb-watches
      @mb-watches 6 лет назад

      Thanks Pat, good advice I will check his channel. I have to do talking hands and going to be on front of the cam but normally let’s see what i can get there 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
      By the way, didn’t purchase the Timex, too, aiming for a nomos ahoi now ... not a dresswatch but to me as close as a dresswatch as it gets for me and would suit me.
      Thanks again and cheers 😊😊

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +1

      Good choice. Haha, *the "close enough" Dress Watch of 2017* - Nomos Ahoi

    • @mb-watches
      @mb-watches 6 лет назад +1

      😂😂 oh yeah, thats a title 🙏🏻🙏🏻😂😂
      But really, I do see the ahoi more like a dresswatch as the regular design clues like a rotating bezel is missing. It looks like a Tangente with a crown guard... 🤓

  • @coldshadow3480
    @coldshadow3480 6 лет назад +6

    I think the Zenith El Primero would have something to say in regards to your title!

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +4

      +Cold Shadow I’ll let you make the argument then, haha. The Chronomaster 38? If you want accuracy, reliability and a sleek 38mm design that’s less than a grand - accessibility is another factor to consider - this is the only option. However, anything I state on the show (unless fact) is opinion.

    • @coldshadow3480
      @coldshadow3480 6 лет назад +3

      I was thinking more along the lines of the El Primero 1969 Original reissue. The first automatic chronograph, in-house, reliable, movement used by others such as Rolex and one of the few Chronos I think looks better in the 38mm option than the larger one.
      Personally I don't think accessibility comes into the discussion for "the best", but your Omega is a great option for under a grand.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +3

      +Cold Shadow Hmm, we definitely have different criteria (which is fine). I will give Zenith one thing, the fact that out of the three companies that produced an Automatic Chronograph back in ‘69, they are the only ones continuing the legacy with that model range. I would love if Seiko reintroduced the 6139, and a high-beat variant at that (as that’s something they too do well), but Zenith does receive that acknowledgment. Accessibility is important because experiencing a watch on the wrist day-to-day matters, to me at least. Not everyone can experience an El Primero, but a Dynamic? As I mentioned, it was Omega’s invitation to your first quality timepiece.

    Thanks for showing us this unique watch! I've never heard of it before, looks awesome, though, out of my budget, unfortunately. I guess the best 38mm chronograph in my price range is the seagul 1963

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      +James Shives The groups name is “Haveston” and they’re based out of the UK, if I’m not mistaken. So far: really great strap... Would love for it to be lengthier however... Hey! The Seagul is great man. “Best” is a relative word. What’s nice is that the Dynamic is still widely accessible and reasonably priced compared to Omega’s other offerings, both modern and vintage.

  • @JohnLeeDraws
    @JohnLeeDraws 6 лет назад +1

    I uh, only have one chronograph, so I guess that would be my favorite. A Seagull 1963 reissue with sapphire and display back. I think it's completely awesome that you can get what basically amounts to a Venus 175 powered manually-wound column wheel chrono for like $300. I have connections to Tianjin, so the historical element (its the result of the Sino-Soviet split, first Chinese chronograph, one of the first Chinese watches period) is also icing on the cake.

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад

      +Mike Q 38mm being too small? I think I have a slightly above larger than average wrist and I’d consider anything from 36mm-42mm a workable range, 38mm-40mm being the perfect size for me. It’s honestly just a joy to wear. On the wrist the pushers do add a lot of presence, yes.

      Mike Q Wear what you like, there is nothing wrong with that, but I do encourage you to try out a smaller watch. I can't exactly relate because I have 6.5 inch wrists, so I always wear smaller watches, but lately I have been looking for something even smaller than the 38mm(s) in my collection. I found a vintage Hamilton in 30mm from the 50's that I really like and am hoping to score one soon.

    What's the model number for the steel bracelet? Does it fit the Speedy Pro?

    • @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett
      @TakeTimewPatrickMarlett  6 лет назад +1

      I believe it's "1571/871," and if I'm not mistake it's the same as what was featured on the Speedmasters of that time, yes. I cannot say that with absolute certainty though, as I've never tried to fit it on one.

    • @eastwestandtherest5353
      @eastwestandtherest5353 6 лет назад +1

      The contemporary Speedy Pro used a 1479/812 bracelet, but the actual bracelet part (1479) is identical to the Dynamic Chrono's 1571 bracelet, except for the clasp (plain Omega on the 1571, Speedmaster markings on the 1479), *but* the end links are a different fit. The Speedmaster needs the 812 end links, since the 871 end links for the Dynamic are thicker to match the shape of the modular chrono case of the Dynamic. You can theoretically modify them with some tool work, but they aren't a straight match. The bracelet bodies, however are good with either set of end links. In fact, the 1479 Speedmaster bracelet body is such a close match (identical, really), I wouldn't be surprised if Omega just used them from existing parts to make the Dyanmic Chrono bracelets, using non-Speedy claps and end links. Since they were transitioning away from the 1479 to a later style for the Speedy right around the time the Dynamic came out, it's possible that portion was repurposed.

    • @jameshsu2558
      @jameshsu2558 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the detailed explanation! The problems with the current gen speedy pro bracelet are 1. only two micro-adjustment holes; 2. the solid end links protrude outward. I have very small wrists (6 in) so the end links effectively enlarge the watch. Hence the question.

      Referring to the Breguet numerals? Those are iconic within the history of horology

      @@waterfordrs22 Yes. And you are the first to say that they are icnonc. Why are they "iconic" ?
      Never seen them on any other watch. They look like typical 90's style to me.

    Are the numerals on the Gen 3 Dynamic unlumed or in white lume? The yellow-green lume of the Gen 2 Dynamic is a bit much for me. There is a lot to love about the Omega Dynamic Chronograph but for me, the best thing about it is that it is decidedly NOT a the overplayed Speedmaster or dysmorphic Seamaster chronograph!

      +James Duffy White lume on the Gen III. Hahaha, a “dysmorphic” SMP Chrono? I actually really wanted one of those for a while, but they are too danged thick. Also, extremely busy dial faces... I think I made the right choice.
