Went there with my Vietnam Navy vet dad in the early 90`s on a boy scout trip from west babylon ny, lots to say enough to write a novel but we slept on the battle ship and my dad showed me around more than the guide or the handheld wands that at certain locations would generate information about that area. my dad loved it, still have a flag bought from the gift shop with beautiful art showing the 3 vessels. My dad passed away from cancer 5 yrs ago..love you

My father served on the Big Mamie when she was in the Pacific. He told me of the nights of the Kamikaze Raids, Bombardment of Truk Island, their "tour" in the sea of Japan, the Philippines, Okinawa and other places. He is 95 and doing well. After I get my second Covid shot in May I plan to go visit him.
Battleship Cove is the largest private naval collection in the world, & a super-neat place. My favorite part was crawling all through the battleship, self-guided.
Dude we got to sleep there when I was younger and in the Boy Scouts. COOLEST “camping” experience ever, hands down
Yeppers, Battleship Cove is a great place to visit if you are into WWII and the US Navy. The USS Massachusetts nicknamed The Big Mamie or simply The Mamie as locals fondly refer to her is a cherished reminder of the effort that went in to fighting WWII and the sacrifices made by that generation.
"1872 that's got to be an old textile mill there" YES, that does have to be an old textile mill! An early textile mill to boot. Fall River is famous in the region as being "The city of Hills and Mills" Of course much like the Whaling industry before it, the textile industry died out a long time ago.
That Mill had to be the Chace Mill and is a 5 1/2 story 377' x 74' building made out of local granite. Of the original 120 Textile mills in Fall River 65 remain.
Many have succumbed to fire as might be expected. The oil impregnated wood floors and columns combined with the vast open areas inside a mill create quite the bonfire. A Mill that burned several years ago caused an inferno that was so intense that across a 6 lane highway it melted the vinyl siding off of a house 500' away.
When I was in the Navy in the 60's, our home port was Newport, RI. I spent a lot of time in Fall River
I was on a mooring in the cove turned out to be the 50th year of the cove big celebration and they shot off some of the guns made the hole boat vibrate. I also got to meet some of the men that served on her something I will never forget it was awesome and I will be going back.
I have been there during my holidays in the US in 2004. Visited also the submarine and the destroyer.
They had a bunch of rounds for the 16" guns below decks. The rounds are solid steel, 16" by about 5.5 feet, and 2700 pounds. That will leave a mark..... We stayed the night with my son's cub scout troop. The USS Massachusetts was the only battleship to not lose a man in WW2. An amazing feat given that they fired some of the very first and very last shots of any battleship in WW2. Pretty incredible story.
It certainly left a mark in the battle of Casablanca. Those guns sank one incomplete battleship, one cargo ship, three troop ships, two light cruisers, two destroyers, and one dry dock
If you want to see a WWII fletcher class destroyer in WWII configuration come to baton rouge Louisiana and see the USS KIDD. DD661.
I served on the USS Twinning for a while (DD540). Beautiful ships - Greyhounds of the sea. During Nam, I served on the USS Dixie, AD-14 destroyer tender and we had everything you can imagine, carpentry, sailmaking, upholstery, optics, electrical, machine shop, foundry, nuclear weapons/ASROC, motor repair/rebuilding and a bunch I forgot...
Funnily enough, there already is a fletcher class in Boston harbor, the USS cassin young
My father is now 98 and chugging along. He lives with my sister in Florida. Just had a visit with him at the end of April 24. He recounted on night when the Mass underwent 23 kamakazee attecks along with other ships of the task force.
The area looks cool.

My home town! I was one of the school kids who donated money to bring the old battleship to Fall River. I think it was '62? I know that BB well and got to explore her before they put up the windows and barriers. I shoved my little bother down one of the 16" guns and climbed up to the signal bridge.

4:17 I remember sleeping on those cots with the boy scouts. If I recall correctly, there were 5 stacked floor to ceiling, if the guy above you was heavy you wouldn't have enough room to turn over
skaterzero807 same, we snuck into a turret one year- pitch black. We were too scared to go in far.
Also stayed on the ship in scouts. Got separated from my family, ended up wandering the ship for what seemed like hours looking for them. Words cannot describe how large that ship seemed to a lost 7 year old.
I was the guy who sent you pictures of the capstan. I wake up every morning looking at these ships. I hope you had fun.

Dude! That's awesome that you came to my city! Next time you are in town, check out the whaling museum and marina in New Bedford. Plymouth also has antique boats near the Plymouth Rock. Hope you enjoyed your stay.

i live in plymouth, it isn't all that interesting, you can see everything in a few hours. the antique boat is a replica anyway built in the 50's i believe
Mike T That's a glass half empty response. First, maybe you think it's not that interesting because you live there? The antique boat is obviously not the same boat Christopher Columbus used but it justifies Plymouth Rock where the Europeans first landed on shore. Your response is like telling a baseball lover that you live in Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame isn't interesting and they could see it all in a few hours. SV Seeker I highly recommend the restaurant Antonio's in New Bedford. Their shrimp/chicken mozambique is renowned amongst the Portuguese community.
The replica of the Mayflower (ie. Mayflower 2) that is usually docked in Plymouth is currently at Mystic Seaport undergoing a major redo... There is actually a live cam online where you can watch them working on her.
As fast as some of those ships were put together, it was a wonder they lasted past their first deployment.
My Father served in a construction battalion, South Pacific. He told me about riding a ship, many days out, on the way to wherever they were sending him. Bored to distraction, leaning on the rail, he starts examining a welded seam. He notices a spot where paint was missing, and discovers that the slag had not been removed. He picked at it, more slag fell away, and he notices that the weld has a crack running down the center of it. So he takes the butt end of his bayonet and starts tapping, chipping away slag. Across the deck to the other side, up the rail, over the top and down the outside for as far as he could reach, and never came to the end of the crack.
About that time, one of the "higher ups" in charge of keeping things operating came out on deck. Dad signaled him over, and showed the guy what he found.
He takes a look, grumbles "It's wonder the sunuva&!%$* even floats..." and wanders off. No welders called up, no repairs at all, up to the time he left that ship.
They put lots dollars and volunteer hours into holding them together. I'm glad they do. And yes. it is apparent they were built in a hurry. :)

I probably would have spent a couple of days looking at all the ships. I have been to the USS Batfish a few times and still spend a couple of hours on it.

I have a helmet off the uss Massachusetts when it was first brought to Fall River they gave them out to the first 200 kids that saw it and my father got one then he gave it to me

I'm Officially Jealous now, always wanted to see Battleship Cove, the Constitution, and Mystic Seaport. I took a Load up to Fall River, many years ago, but a blizzard was coming so Dispatch deadheaded me South immediately....
Yea...Really Doug...My grandfather was on Destroyers...you need to go...you ain't going over the side (well, unless you wanted to spend some time in the brig), and you ain't leaving your post while on watch...so...yea...that's how it worked...As for running cable and plumbing exposed? That's for maintenance and repair during wartime (and even peacetime)...you get out of a battle (or even during battle) you want to be able to get to everything without cutting into bulkheads...

In my opinion, the Massachusetts is the most special US battleship preserved, more special than the USS Missouri, and more special than the USS Texas. Why, because of the 8 US battleships preserved (10 if you count Arizona and Utah), she's the only one to have fought in a conventional naval battle. As where every other US battleship only ever saw convoy and carrier escorting, with the occasional shore bombardment action once in a blue moon. Some of them, like Iowa, New Jersey, and North Carolina, sat in the background and did nothing in a few of them, and that's it.
Meanwhile, USS Massachusetts served in the battle of Casablanca, where she faced off against the mostly complete Nazi controlled French battleship Jean Bart, while being armed with a large number a dud shells that would fail to explode. The two ships exchanged fire. Massachusetts sank Jean Bart in port with 11 hits (6 of which were duds), and received a single 15 inch shell that penetrated her deck. She also sank a number of military vessels, 3 troop ships and 1 cargo ship in port and destroyed surrounding naval bases on the shore while aiming for Jean Bart. She then aimed at a submarine, failing to sink the sub, but sinking the entire surrounding dry dock around it. She then targeted Nazi controlled French naval ships trying to escape the port, where she sank 2 light cruisers and 2 destroyers.
Overall, Massachusetts sank one incomplete battleship, three troop transports, one cargo ship, two light cruisers, two destroyers, and one dry dock. She sank nine ships in total (ten if you count the dry dock), the most number of ships sunk by a single ship in a single battle.
