    Mini chainsaws like the Stihl GTA 26 are the chainsaw equivalent of surgical scalpels.
    Because full size gasoline,battery and mains powered chainsaws are brute force tools because you don't have that level of control and precision with a full size saw.

    I was out using my GTA today to cut up a big pile of limbs. Got a pile 2 feet high and 8 feet long out of three batteries. Have cut over a cord of wood with it, and just put on a new chain. Will sharpen the old one for a back up. Still have about 1/2" of oil in my little bottle, and just put on a few dribbles when I'm done. I'm glad it doesn't have a built in oil system, as it would get all gummed up from the dust. Now I just use an old toothbrush to clean it out. If you want some protection; make a hand guard that will use the screw that holds the cover now. The cover is to keep the saw from kicking back when you are in close quarters pruning bushes. It keeps the top part of the chain from catching and forcing the saw back in your face. You also have the "best tool ever" in the Jaw Horse. Best money I have ever spent on anything.

    Once you took the guard off it went well. There is definitely a use for that in my opinion.

    I just helped my neighbor drop a 80' tree. He had the GTA 26 and I used it to limb the branches. It worked great. It has a place.

    I would suggest modifying the guard (shorten it a few inches) then replace it. Might save your fingers on a misgrab.

    I was thinking of removing the guard from mine for bottom-up cuts, you convinced me not to. 🩸🩸🩸

    Would you recommend a mini saw to a beginner/hobbiest carver looking to get into wood carving on a budget / with limited tool storage space?

    • @KyleHallwoodworker
      @KyleHallwoodworker  9 месяцев назад

      I would recommend a full saw , gas Stihl ms170 or a battery msa70 one of those to start . The GTA 26 is really better for little detail work

  • @timbrown2637
    @timbrown2637 2 года назад +2

    Maybe cut the guard in half so it still protects your fingers

  • @100musicplaylists3
    @100musicplaylists3 Год назад

    the guard is likely there to not only protect from the chain backlash but also to prevent you from trying to use the tool at an angle which will snap the chain.

    Sweet saw. Love those mini saws and hope to buy one some day. Electric chainsaws work really great unless it’s wet outside then I wouldn’t use it but carving inside a garage would work great but you would have to watch out for the cord.

    • @KyleHallwoodworker
      @KyleHallwoodworker  3 года назад

      Yeah I would t use my battery saws on a rainy day that’s for sure .I have need used a good electric saw . I like my battery ones

    Hey what chain do you use for bocking out stuff I'm looking for one that is not so aggressive so it won't hop around when starting cuts? Thanks you're an awesome artist man

      For small carvings I’m running.43 with 1/4 pitch or .43 with 3/8 pitch. Depends on the saw and the set up

    Make a handle to fit the hole the bolt for the guard was in. Perhaps use one from an old angle grinder and a bracket to make it fit.

    My nephew got my brother one for Christmas and he really likes it because he likes to cut up small stuff to use for kindling in his wood stove and it's great for that and pruning and I'm trying to convince my nephew that UnkiePappy would really like to have one! JK...
    If I do get one do you think I can carve like that with it?
    Probably not but you did a great job!, enjoy your video!

    That saw looks like it was designed for the 80 year old lady to trim the bushes in her front yard. Do you still feel like a man after using that thing? Lol 😂

    • @KyleHallwoodworker
      @KyleHallwoodworker  4 года назад

      Sure do .. The biggest lol 😂 You are absolutely right it is meant to trim the bushes that’s why it’s called the Stihl gta 26 pruner.

    What's the best wood to carve

    • @KyleHallwoodworker
      @KyleHallwoodworker  4 года назад

      I think that depends on what you want to carve . If you want to chainsaw carve bears and things pine is usually a good choice. If you want to carve things with high details a harder wood is a better choice

      You would need to find your local Stihl dealers. Go to Stihl USA .com and there you can find your local dealer .

    It's totally a real chainsaw, it has a legit chain that saws. The battery life isnt great but I insist you can do a hell of a lot in this small package.
    Also I heard basically any lighter oil works, even vegetable oil, mineral oil, etc. The guy who sold me mine told me hes just been using virgin olive oil
