One last ride in the 2019 Titan XD Cummins 5.0-liter diesel

  • A few days after I began test-driving a 2019 Nissan Titan Pro4x Crew Cab, news broke that Nissan would be ditching the diesel option starting with model year 2020. Sorry to hear that. We did plenty of towing and hauling during Hurricane Michael clean-up and this 5/8-ton truck did not disappoint when it came to power, braking, safety features and overall comfort. Nissan recently unveiled its 2020 Titan and plans on revealing its 2020 Titan XD soon. Both can be optioned with a 5.6-liter Endurance V8. Cummins informed HWT that following the 2019 Titan XD, their short-lived 5.0-liter V8 diesel, which debuted in the 2016 Titan XD, will no longer be produced.

    I purchased my 2019 XD Cummins Platinum Reserve when I heard they were discontinuing the Cummins for 2020. I previously owned 2 Tundras and needed something a little bigger but didn’t want to step up to the 3/4 ton segment due to their size. I have had it now for just over a year and regularly tow a camper and car hauler 6500-9000 lbs with no problems. Really love this truck!

    Those other diesels can have a 14k towing capacity, doesnt mean it should. Tow the max weight with the ram eco diesel and then do it with the xd. The xd weighs probably 2k lbs more, makes towing 100x more stable and enjoyable.

      @@AKAL1lROB541 I've towed my 7k trailer with an F150, Tundra and my XD. No comparison, the xd is ten times more stable and you dont have to rev the shit out of it to get up to speed. The tundra and F150 (5.0) did get it up to speed with no problem, but the tundra had alot more low rpm power than the 5.0, but once the 5.0 got over 4,000rpm it really woke up. The tundra engine was quieter and didnt have to rev as high as the 5.0, but neither pulled like the Cummins, and the xd weighs alot more than those half tons. I believe the xd is capable of safely towing alot more than its rated for. I put 1500lbs of salt gel in my xd and the same load in our f250. The XF just leveled out, and the f250 squatted way more despite having a much higher payload. And the xd has adjustable headlights, a feature Toyota has offered since 07 and something the big 3 still don't offer. If would be nice for ford to offer it considering how bad their super duty trucks squat.

    I had planned on keeping my Titan until it couldn't drive. I had a 2016. I even know a couple of the engineers that helped work on the engine with Cummins. Talking with some of the guys that maintain my generators which are also Cummins. I was worried that overtime I would have issues finding parts if there were any issues and I decided to just sell after reading complaints on people who had put more miles on theirs. I will miss it. Why nissan under rated this trucks capability is beyond me, but from what I've seen, the parking brake is what kept the towing rating low on the xd because of how much it will hold on the hill portion of the tow ratings test.

Also, I deleted, tuned and installed larger tires/wheels(to get the cruise RPM down) on mine and I now get up to 26mpg. I love the truck and plan to keep it until I'm too old to drive. The Ram 1/2 ton is NOT out performing it, it only has a higher claimed tow rating. XD has beefier axles, much stronger frame and bigger Than most HD truck brakes. Higher power from the Cummins as well. Cummins pulled the engine because Nissan never advertised the truck properly this sales were dismal. So call it like it is, the Ram won’t confidently tow what Titan will by a long shot.
    BTW, tire maintenance is something you set. Has nothing to do with pressure.

    • @tomquimby4869
      @tomquimby4869 4 года назад

      Granted, the 5/8-ton offers higher GVWR than half-tons. As noted in the video, the truck handled towing and hauling with ease. Definitely pleased about that. On paper, the higher tow rating of Ram, the lower price and much better mpg will attract a lot of buyers. Let's face it, most truck buyers lean towards half-tons because they just don't need all that towing and hauling capability where a higher GVWR or GCWR will prove more beneficial.

    • @james2042
      @james2042 4 года назад +1

      The issue with the Titan XD is its a 3/4 ton that has capabilities closer to modern half tons. There is no such thing as a 5/8th ton truck, Nissan made that up because their HD couldn't compete with American 3/4 tons, or as I should properly call them class 2b. (half tons are class 2a, and there is no class in between)

      During a media event in Arizona in 2015 when they first debuted the truck Nissan reported that the Titan boxes could double as coolers. They even put ice and soft drinks inside the boxes to illustrate their point. However, it was pretty cool out at that time so I decided to test it out later. It failed miserably compared to a nearly 30 year old cooler. It's not a bad idea. Honda did the same thing with Ridgeline. Nissan could team up with Yeti, Coleman...someone and offer something better next time.

    I dont think you can compare the Ram 1500 Diesel or the Ford F150 diesel 3.0l engine to the Titan XD 5.0l CUMMINS engine... first, you are doing the same with less, meaning less reliability down the down from boyh 1500/150... on top, who doesnt know Cummins is the shit... can't go wrong with Cummins... also, add the fact that you will be towing the same weight(12k) with less stability due to the 1500/150 weight... can't really compare both of them... nor the Titan XD Cummins to the 250/2500 or to the half ton market... it'll never be a "fair" comparison. Nissan never advertised them enough, not many poor know the Titan XD had a Cummins 5.0l V8 option...

    The 3.0 diesels are still low payload. The 3.0 powerstroke crew is only 1314 lbs payload. That is like a 8,000 lbs trailer and 2 passengers, no cargo. Good luck taking the family camping with that. The XD atleast is 2000-2500 payload. The 3.0 diesels are only good daily drivers for fuel economy that will pull a boat. Towing big, go to the big boy 3/4 tons. The only 1/2 ton comparable to the XD and is good for towing is the F-150 with the max payload package (increases payload up to 3000lbs) and a 5.0L Coyote motor.

While the Ram can claim a high towing number I wouldn’t want to do it, would prefer the Titan. My problem with the Titan is the Nissan design... awful at best, clunky, awkward, dated, just not a truck i would be seen in.

We believe the engine was a terrific product, but unfortunately sales have not met expectations for both Nissan and Cummins so the decision was made to end production of this engine in 2019. We will continue to offer support to existing customers.”
      Nissan issued this statement for that same story: “Production of the Titan XD Diesel will end in December 2019. This will help better position Nissan in the long term as we prepare for the launch of the new, refreshed 2020 Titan and Titan XD gas later this year.”
      Beyond that, neither manufacturer would offer up any additional comments.

    Good review. Too bad Nissan is getting rid of the diesel. People who tow know a regular half-ton will NEVER tow the make believe tow numbers manufacturers create!
    Out here in the Mountain west, towing over 8500lbs in a half-ton is a game of white knuckle Russian roulette....talk about the tail wagging the dog!
    Nissan did not market the truck properly and most Automotive journalists don't know anything about trucks or towing anymore. I don't know how many reviews I've read about the Titan XD, but most reviewers are completely clueless, uninformed, and have spent too much time reviewing BMWs or Lexus.
    I'm nobody special, but I could have advertised this truck so well, Nissan wouldn't be able to keep up with demand.

      I couldn't believe it. Here I was in the middle of test-driving it and the news broke that Nissan would be ditching the diesel. • @NissanPodcast

      Like you mentioned in this video the 5.0L is just too thirsty vs what the big three are offering in a similar truck.
      There was a reason RAM passed on this V8.. Nissan needed the Cummins name for sure to help bring new customers in. Timing killed any potential for Nissan.. by 17 Ram had the 3.0

      Nissan Nation Podcast the only reason Ram passed on the 5.0 platform was because of the FCA buyout. VM Motori was a natural replacement for the 1/2 ton. Branded as a 3.0 EcoDiesel... Unfortunately, the Big three are misleading and claiming you can safely tow close to 13,000 lbs with their 1/2 tons, and that is just scary. There are so many ways the XD platform is safer for those weights, it's not even a comparison. As for the fuel consumption discussion - 7 mpg in this videos example is clearly stuck in the regeneration mode around town because the DPF needs to get out on the highway and clear. All modern diesels are getting horrible 'in town mpg' if you don't get out and run them. Even the EcoDiesel returns those types of numbers putting around town all the time.
