    Everything Ace Frehley does has a certain charm, and somehow his street wisdom shines through. It's a street song, and Ace wins because of that. But only by a small margin. Paul Stanley could sing anything and make it sound good.

    Pauls sung this song really well, it's back when Pauls voice actually worked, Pauls voice then was at its most mature. Ace's version had more of a street feel, less polish Vs Kiss but more soul.

    I agree with you. Ace Frehley is a superior artist. He could help Kiss be good at their clever, catchy songs. Yet, on his own Ace is more a classic rock guitar hero like Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, or Martin Barre. Frehley also has a better understanding of songwriting, recording, and producing. That is why is solo albums sell better than the others in Kiss.

    I like both versions, and it is really cool to see and hear how how artists (who coincidentally have a very close connection) take the same song and make it their own. But if I've got to pick one, it's the version by KISS. It's more polished and feels like it has more emotion to me. Paul's vocals are insanely good as well. I remember getting Hot In The Shade first, and later Trouble Walking. I had of course already heard the KISS version a thousand times, and was really excited to hear it performed by Ace. I was actually pretty disappointed at the time when I heard Ace's version. Anyway, this is all my opinion of course, and to me there's no wrong answer!

      Nope. Her version sucks. Robin Beck gives the better "chick interpretation". But ultimately, this song needed the "NY groove" swagger that only KISS and Ace can provide. That's what doomed Molly Hatchet's version. Danny Joe Brown has a great voice, and the boys in Molly Hatchet can shred with anyone, but this just wasn't the right song for them. And, it damn sure wasn't the right song for a European chick.

    • @RocknRollAllNight
      @RocknRollAllNight  3 года назад +2

      I explain some of that in my video. During Kiss' version, I explain that Paul co wrote it with 2 other people and the plan was for Paul to use the song on the Crazy Nights album, but the song was rejected. So Paul offered the song to some other artists. Also, several months later, one of the other co-writers of the song offered the song to Ace. Ace took the song. And at that same time, Kiss decided to use the song for Hot in the Shade. When Kiss found out that Ace was also recording it, Gene called Ace and asked him to not put the song on his album. Ace refused.

    Here's the thing. Both KISS and Ace can lay "claim" on making this song "their bitch". I'm as a big a Molly Hatchet fan as there is, and while they have the talent to cover a lot of great, older rock classics (check out their version of "All Over Now"), their version of "Hide Your Heart" basically sucks compared to KISS' & Ace's. Robin Beck turns in the definitive "chick version" of this song, blowing Bonnie Tyler's shittastic version out of the water. Buttttt.... what made Molly Hatchet's attempt so futile also hurts Beck, too. This isn't "a chick song". This song needs that "NY Groove" (to borrow from another great Ace/Kiss cover) that only KISS and Ace can give it. So, clearly it's essentially universally established that only KISS & Ace have versions worthy of consideration. Usually, I go with the original songwriter, unless the cover artist just knocks their version out of the park. What's tough here... is that BOTH KISS AND ACE KNOCKED THEIR VERSIONS OUT OF THE PARK. On one hand, I kinda like Ace's grittier elements. His voice isn't suited for every song that Paul's written, but this clearly is one where it is. Yet vocally, I still give the edge to Paul here. I think Anton Fig gave Ace's version a better drum sound, which is really saying something because Eric Carr was a phenomenal drummer. But, I kinda think Bruce nailed a solo on the KISS version that Ace didn't even really attempt. So, advantage KISS, right? Eh, maybe? Maybe not. Clearly, KISS' version is the more "polished" version. They'd recorded a rough demo of it in 1987, but Gene and KISS' mgmt convinced Paul to shelve the song. Paul had the correct idea that the song could be "a money maker", so he gave Gene the middle finger and sent "his song" to Bonnie Tyler, and a year later, co-writer Holly Knight sent it to Molly Hatchet & to Ace (I'm led to believe that co-writer, Desmond Child sent it to Robin Beck?). With Paul getting songwriting money for the song that Gene wasn't getting a taste of, ... all of a sudden it became "viable" again for KISS and their mgmt. Funny how a cash register going "CaCHING!" in the distance can rouse up Gene and the band's mgmt. So, they'd obviously heard Bonnie's version, and Molly Hatchet's... next up was Ace's. KISS ultimately polished their version to have greater "Hit Potential" than Ace's, but for this song... I kinda think the polish was a tricky endeavor. Did they polish it too much? This song needed to retain it's edgy grit. Ultimately, I think KISS walked the line perfectly (with the right amount of polish, not eroding the grit), and I give their version the slightest edge over Ace's version. But, that's today. Tomorrow, I might change my mind & say that Ace's version is better.

    • @RocknRollAllNight
      @RocknRollAllNight  2 года назад

      You make some great points. Both Kiss and Ace's versions are great. But in my opinion Kiss's version is too polished. I give Ace the win on this, a slim victory, for grit.

    Ace's version clearly features Peter Criss on backing vocals. The only saving grace to the Kiss version is Bruce's solo and Eric Carr's performance (which may not even be him given more recent revelations about the shady (no pun intended lol) recording process of HITS). Really wish Eric got the chance to work with Ace and Peter on this tune because that would push Ace's version the song to damn near perfection. Paul's renditions just sound limp (even the Crazy Nights demo version).

      Paul Stanley Co-wrote it with 2 other people, Desmond Child and Holly Knight. Kiss is version is great. Pauls vocals are great, Bruce's guitar playing is great. I just like Ace's better because of his New York accent on this one, and I like Ace's guitar solo better. But Both are great
