I actually don't think Brann's vocals sound that bad. I haven't tried it myself, but singing whilst playing drums without sounding "shakey" must be fairly difficult, especially when you're as active when drumming as Brann is. Heard them just a couple of weeks ago at the Download Festival and they all sounded top notch, got used to playing Oblivion obviously!
You have to realize that this band wasn't really used to clean vocals by this point. This was their first album that had more clean vocals than growls, screams and snarls. However, it is somewhat odd because Brann has the least experience of all of them but somehow sounds the best.
I had never even heard of Mastodon before I went to Sonisphere in Hultsfred! It was love in first sight!!!!!! These guys are awesome... They played Oblivion (of course) and I was blown away! Keep on Rockin' Mastodon!! Hultsfred ägde ut allt jag nån´sin gjort!!!
Listen to the album version of Oblivion... I was like "who the hell is singing there?" when I found out it was Brann I was like "wtf" and shit my pants. In a good way.
For some reason they always screw the vocals up... i dunno, it's sad because they're fucking awesome on record, but for some reason it's so under-produced. I know a singer should always just be able to sound great regardless of vocal effects etc. but this just never seems to work with Mastodon.
i've listened to these guys for years and each album they put out i'm more and more impressed of how their sound is evolving; and yet they still remain the same band i heard from a complilation cd years ago...Battle At Sea being the song.
I had the pleasure of seeing them live 2 weeks ago in a very small venue(less than 500). Met the guitar player with the handlebar stash. Amazing show! the opening band Kylesa were also pretty mindblowing.
I like lyric version most, you can tell the drummer isn't happy with his singing performance at the beginning but you get times like that when you heart isn't set in the right place. Mastodon are awesome live, people that talk down to them should see em a few times before opening their mouth! Mastodon for life.
The best band of the last 10 years. Great musicians! Great songs! And Bran Dailor is just amazing cuz he's an outstanding drummer who can sing at the same time.. Incredible!
2:18!! That is a fantastic addition that, for me, makes this performance so much better than the album! I watched this video once last year, and now everytime I hear this song, I hear that addition. Every Time! I. Freaking. Love. This. BAND!
It really says something about the talent of the drummer when he can play difficult stuff like that and sing at the same time! These guys some really talented musicians!
You Know What? This Video Just Resparked My Desire To Play Music. Mastodon Is One Of My Favorite Bands Ever! I Cant Wait To See Them Later This Year In San Fran. It'll Be My First Mastodon Show, Plus Volta AND M.I.A!?! I Might Just Die.
I hope the non-musicians who see this realize how incredibly hard it is to play drums like that and sing at the same time. complicated fills while singing slowly- quite incredible. he is probably the best rock drummer that is around right now.
I read where Brann the drummer used to amaze even as a kid singing while playing. IMHO this is the most creative and exciting band around at the moment in this genre.
They have. After several weeks on the road, all the kinks have been ironed out. They are at the absolute top of their game right now. Don't miss out, they have to be seen to be believed.
I love Mastodon! My favorite band. What irritates me most about people who bash them or their live videos where they do not seem to by "in tune," or "in rhythm," is that people seemed to have lost touch with the beauty of expression and live performances--people playing their fucking hearts out, from their souls. Not just some spruced up fucking studio gig that hides all the flaws.....and goddamnit, Mastodon is real and beautiful.
Mastodon and Opeth are my favorite bands. Mastodon Is amazing, and they are all great musicians. But i also must say so are Opeth. And the growl that Mikael from Opeth posseses is just.... AWSOME
I found out about mastodon a while after Blood Mountain. I felt i could only listen to their old albums when i was feeling raw. Crack the Skye I could listen to in any mood. In my opinion it is their greatest creation. AND ITS SOUNDS GREAT LIVE!
I love their development, also vocally. I think this is the Mastodont I've been waiting for all those years. May they keep on keepin' on! Also, I would like to propose to eliminate all cameramen who don't know when to film which musician. It irritates me quite a lot.
I think you said it perfectly. They all know each of them are talented and the utilize those talents when they see fit to make something they can all like and be proud of. Its a well oiled machine made of brotherhood more than a band, in my opinion.
this band is every band I've ever loved in this song...just fucking unbelievable..I had to listen over and over just to make sure...and yup..it's true.
Morgan Agren, Tomas Haake, Damon Che, Martin Lopez, Danny Carey. Yes... Brann is in their class. Mastodon is awesome. Loved em since the first time I hears Fire Ants and love em the same today
Yea, just announced this week. Last time I saw them, they played the entire 'Blood Mountain' record. Can't wait to see 'Crack The Skye' performed in its entirety. Gonna be epic.
"Falling from grace cause I've been away too long Leaving you behind with my lonesome song Now I'm lost in oblivion." Wonderful harmony with Brian & Troy, & who would've guessed Brann could sing while drumming like the maniac he is?
Its shitty cause we live in a society that thinks these vocals are not good. Those people have no idea how hard it is to play an instrument at this difficulty and sing, and todays pop musicians wish they were this talented at actual music. Living in the 'American idol' generation sets stupidly high standards for anybody who aspires to be a singer. I love this song, and it feels more real because the vocals are real, and I see you know whats up too.
omg i love this song! crack the skye has some melodies that remind me of porqupine tree, i seen mastodon live in cardiff playing before my favourite band tool, best album yet guys kep it up!
Thank you crazyivanastas, I agree. What is with the singing? And before anyone states something stupid without knowing me. My mom is an opera singer, and I have been studying classical singing for several years now. And I sang for the NYC based Metal band Empyreon at one time.
I actually don't think Brann's vocals sound that bad. I haven't tried it myself, but singing whilst playing drums without sounding "shakey" must be fairly difficult, especially when you're as active when drumming as Brann is. Heard them just a couple of weeks ago at the Download Festival and they all sounded top notch, got used to playing Oblivion obviously!
i love their vocals. each of their vocal styles can add so much to the songs
You have to realize that this band wasn't really used to clean vocals by this point. This was their first album that had more clean vocals than growls, screams and snarls.
However, it is somewhat odd because Brann has the least experience of all of them but somehow sounds the best.
That was an excellent performace. I give the drummer mad props for being able to play the way he does AND sing well at the same time.
Look at that beautiful Silverburst.
..and listen to its tone! :)
i love how every member in this band sings. not in ever song but when they have their moments.MASTODON FOREVER!!!!!
I fucking loooove the guitar solo
I had never even heard of Mastodon before I went to Sonisphere in Hultsfred! It was love in first sight!!!!!! These guys are awesome... They played Oblivion (of course) and I was blown away! Keep on Rockin' Mastodon!! Hultsfred ägde ut allt jag nån´sin gjort!!!
From the first to the last note, just perfectly performed. The singing parts are just amazing and instrumental is unbelievable as always!
I love Mastodon. I love how into the music they are. I love how you see the passion radiating from them.
Listen to the album version of Oblivion...
I was like "who the hell is singing there?" when I found out it was Brann I was like "wtf" and shit my pants.
In a good way.
Awesome. This is why Mastodon is one of my favorite bands.
They should use the same vocal effects they've used like in the studio version. Vocals sounds so plain. :/
Compressor, EQ, etc.
This has been the only song in my head for more than a month. It's a part of me.
For some reason they always screw the vocals up... i dunno, it's sad because they're fucking awesome on record, but for some reason it's so under-produced. I know a singer should always just be able to sound great regardless of vocal effects etc. but this just never seems to work with Mastodon.
I think it's because Brent sings the harmony on record and it's his voice is so distinctive that they can't replicate it live
Critics, Some people just think they can play an instrument and sing at the same time better than Mastodon.
It's because they aren't singers. They just aren't.
first time i ever heard mastodon was from this video..... hooked ever since!
Orchestration and vision is brilliant for song.......truly a modern gem and breath of fresh air for the genre.....kudos!
Un des meilleurs groupe de métal depuis plusieurs années. Respect à eux ! VIVE MASTODON
i've listened to these guys for years and each album they put out i'm more and more impressed of how their sound is evolving; and yet they still remain the same band i heard from a complilation cd years ago...Battle At Sea being the song.
I don't usually listen to Mastadon, but when I do its a lifetime experience
They really are all such amazing musicians
This song is magical...my favorite from them!
thanks for posting! this album kills!!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing them live 2 weeks ago in a very small venue(less than 500). Met the guitar player with the handlebar stash. Amazing show! the opening band Kylesa were also pretty mindblowing.
No dejan de sorprenderme estos tipos...absolutamente geniales!!!!!!!
They all have good voices, and none of them sound the same.
Thats the reason why it works so well.
Love that chorus tempo change. Brilliant.
OMG this song kicks ass more every time I hear it!
I can't believe I'm watching them live in a month!
The Solo is amazing, especially with the heavy background rhythm. One of the greatest bands on earth!
Incredible!
Where have I been all these years?!?!?!?!?
Why didn't I look up Mastodon sooner?!
GRAAAH I've been missing out! lol
I saw them a few weeks ago at House of Blues in MA. BEST SHOW EVER!!! The following week I saw Lamb of God. MASTODON kicked there ass!!!
wow this feels different, yet it still sounds like mastodon. thanks for posting
I love this song, it's just amazing
ive seen them twice and both times the vocals were awesome.
2:18!! That is a fantastic addition that, for me, makes this performance so much better than the album! I watched this video once last year, and now everytime I hear this song, I hear that addition. Every Time! I. Freaking. Love. This. BAND!
that solo gives me chills man!
God that guy on the left is so freaking awesome with his freakishly weird head movements... it's just so awesome >.
The more I listen to Crack The Sye, the more I love it....definitely one of the greatest metal band !
It really says something about the talent of the drummer when he can play difficult stuff like that and sing at the same time! These guys some really talented musicians!
the best live version on youtube that i'e seen
This is like the best song intro ever. And god damn, creds to the drummer for singing while playing!!! that's sick.
The bass lines are incredible!
I hope the non-musicians who see this realize how incredibly hard it is to play drums like that and sing at the same time. complicated fills while singing slowly- quite incredible. he is probably the best rock drummer that is around right now.
this is absolutley brilliant
Well their music does fit that style of game. Ironically this is a great song to listen to whilst playing Oblivion.
I read where Brann the drummer used to amaze even as a kid singing while playing. IMHO this is the most creative and exciting band around at the moment in this genre.
One of the best versions of this song..... pretty impressive to be able to play drums and sing at the same time
They have. After several weeks on the road, all the kinks have been ironed out. They are at the absolute top of their game right now. Don't miss out, they have to be seen to be believed.
I love mastadon! And that silverburst fender American deluxe p-bass is freaking sweet! I want one so badly!
Singing and playing drums at the same time, can only be done by the best
Nicely done Brann
my first time hearing this band and im hooked great band
Great band, really loved this album, and this song in particular.
still my favorite recording of this song, so badass
I love Mastodon! My favorite band. AND ITS SOUNDS GREAT LIVE!
Mastodon is my new favorite Rock Band! They kick A.
I love their development, also vocally. I think this is the Mastodont I've been waiting for all those years. May they keep on keepin' on! Also, I would like to propose to eliminate all cameramen who don't know when to film which musician. It irritates me quite a lot.

Lol you're so right, i love that dude, he make amazing guitar solos. The one he play on The Czar always blow my mind !
Morgan Agren, Tomas Haake, Damon Che, Martin Lopez, Danny Carey. Yes... Brann is in their class. Mastodon is awesome. Loved em since the first time I hears Fire Ants and love em the same today

Brann sounds amazing in this performance. He's really good.
That intro is literally what i think of when i hear any song sounds as if there is a mastodon stomping through the forest
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how the camera avoided Brent like the plague during the ENTIRE solo.
I love this video
