I remember a wrestling practice where we had our first "King of the Mountain", I was a Freshman, generally hated myself--and I won. It helped change me so much. I remember walking home from practice that day actually feeling confidence and comfort in myself for once. Wrestling is a sport that changes physical health and wellness, but can also provide mental and emotional stability under the right circumstances for the right wrestlers. That perfect blend of competitive sports and martial arts makes it one of the greatest disciplines, thanks for paying it some respect.

Hey Josh; really love the judo content and I know you entered a tournament.
Do you think you could do more tournaments or real fights? I saw an in house tournament recently and there was a beast of a woman who came 2nd in a grouped division because not enough women/competitors in that weight class. She won her fights with a brilliant timed foot sweep, newaza and one competitor injured himself (he landed on his head while attempting to throw).
I remember the video you did with the open mat sparring but you didn’t want to use force. I’m really curious how you’d do if you faced a woman like that. She’s just about big enough (your size) so you can’t really rag doll her but she was great with timing whereas in your tournament you were out manovered into a throw. Would love to see how more fights for you would play out; different ways to win or lose

I mean i understand the sentiment, but that number is ridiculous. Its not 99%. Id say anything between 50% to 60%. My entire gym has stand up/takedown elements of in our bjj classes. Roughly 90% of the bjj students in our gym can take on, and in most cases beat the average high school wrestler. Its only some gyms that don't focus on stand up. But certainly its not 99%. Particularly gyms with gracie lineage. Sometimes we'll spend entire classes focusing on stand up elements. But yeah there are still way too many gyms that don't focus on it, when they should. But it's definitely not 99%.

Josh, if you don’t have the wrestling standup technique, trying to match it with the same bent over style with end with you losing to guys with decades of experience using it. You beautiful vertical stance can be used against wrestlers; you just need to keep the stand either far away or a tight close grip. Most wrestlers don’t have any standup except a lateral drop or head lock, so if you develop one or two throws both forward and backwards, you will back most people terrified to tie up except judoka, Sambist, or Greco guys. Yanking an opponents head up from the chin is a great way to defend the legs and get your under hooks. Watch how Jason Morris became a collegiate all American wrestler only using just throws.
