HEMA guy who just started my BJJ journey. Right after my second class they had the wrestling class. Fairly certain it is for college wrestling. Their warmup was no joke at all. Most of these guys are built bulky and wide and they were doing handsprings at one point, flawlessly I might add. Ive got to get in on that.
When I started Judo, since I was so much bigger than the rest of the class, the instructor had me partner with wrestlers majority of the time. In the early weeks, we only "sparred" on the ground until our throws and break falls improved, so I ended up rolling with wrestlers at the end of class after the judo drills and picking up some wresling tips as well 😂
Have you found a sambo place yet? So, yeah I go with high school wrestles from time to time. It’s so much fun! I am a terrible wrestler considering I’m a Judo/BJJ guy. But I always learn really cool things from the coaches and kids and always have a really fun work out! Wrestling is great!

Hey Josh; really love the judo content and I know you entered a tournament. Do you think you could do more tournaments or real fights? I saw an in house tournament recently and there was a beast of a woman who came 2nd in a grouped division because not enough women/competitors in that weight class. She won her fights with a brilliant timed foot sweep, newaza and one competitor injured himself (he landed on his head while attempting to throw). I remember the video you did with the open mat sparring but you didn’t want to use force. I’m really curious how you’d do if you faced a woman like that. She’s just about big enough (your size) so you can’t really rag doll her but she was great with timing whereas in your tournament you were out manovered into a throw. Would love to see how more fights for you would play out; different ways to win or lose

Josh, if you don’t have the wrestling standup technique, trying to match it with the same bent over style with end with you losing to guys with decades of experience using it. You beautiful vertical stance can be used against wrestlers; you just need to keep the stand either far away or a tight close grip. Most wrestlers don’t have any standup except a lateral drop or head lock, so if you develop one or two throws both forward and backwards, you will back most people terrified to tie up except judoka, Sambist, or Greco guys.
